A Message from our President, Dale Tuttle...

Happy New Year and hope everyone had a great holiday season. I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their support that has been given to me during my year as president. I am very proud of some of the accomplishments we were able to reach. At the beginning of 2018 your Executive Board set the goals for the year below. Below each of these goals are some of the results we were able to reach. Thank you to everyone that helped us accomplish what we set out to do in 2018.

To reach out and reconnect with past CNYSNLA Presidents and members to get their input

and help, to help retain and build membership, and expand our current Executive Board.

Not only were we able to reconnect with a number of past presidents, but also there were a

number of past board members, members and non-members who were supportive of the

activities we were involved in.

To engage with our neighboring Regions (V, VI, & VIII) to work closer to promote all of our

Educational and Social events for this upcoming year. As noted below on our last goal

where we had record attendance at both the Clambake, and Holiday Luncheon, where some

of this attendance included a number of our industry friends from our three neighboring

regions. We also did promote the Education Days for these three Regions. This is a goal we

definitely want to build on in 2019.

To continue to look for any additional Educational Opportunities for the PLANTCNY

members. During 2018 we were able to promote a number of educational opportunities to

our members through e-blasts and will continue to do so in 2019. If anyone has an

educational event you would like us to promote please contact me.

To reach out to our local Horticultural Colleges to promote and build on internships, career

opportunities for the students. Although we were able to make some headway, this is one

area on which we still have work to do. We started the year by promoting job fairs at SUNY

Morrisville, ESF, & Cobleskill, and Cornell University. We had planned to do a dinner

meeting at Morrisville but were unable to fit this into the schedule for the year. We need to

continue to forge these relationships and promote our scholarship opportunities to the

students of all of these colleges so that we are able to award our two scholarships annually.

To continue to have involvement with Community volunteer projects similar to those that

we have been involved with over the past two decades. This was an area that I am very

proud of what we were able to accomplish this past year; unfortunately our involvement

was in response to three past tragedies. First we were able to assist the family of one of our

late past members, Josh Martineau, owner of Sharp Blades Landscaping who prior to his

passing had a project he began at his church in Cicero. Working with the family, and a

group of church volunteers and a number of our members and industry professionals, we

were able to complete the last phase of this project. Secondly after the passing of past

member Ted Florczyk, owner of Ted's Landscaping, who had supported our annual Toys for

Tots campaign anonymously for the past 20+ years. After his passing, working with his

family and the United States Marines, we renamed our campaign to “Toys for Ted”

(Additional information listed below). Thirdly, PLANTCNY was also involved in some of the

Brian Skinner Honoring and memorial tree plantings that were done at the New York State

Fairgrounds, and the Town of Dewitt Town Hall; we will also be planting a Weeping White

Pine in the Court of Honor at the New York State Fair that will be dedicated during the 2019

Fair, more information to follow. Thank you to everyone who helped with these community

events to make them such a success.

To continue to look to add social functions for our members to get together with outside of

the workplace. Some or all of these functions will be used as membership building events

similar to what used to be done at Rusty’s "Get to Know Us" parties. Thank you to Dave

Iannuzzi, our Promotions Chairperson, who arranged Brunch Get Togethers at Tug Hill

Vineyards, Pitch Nights at Spaghetti Warehouse, A night out to see “Just Joe“ play, Syracuse

Crunch Games, and going above and beyond in promoting our two social events / meetings:

our Clambake, and Holiday Luncheon both had record attendance. This is an area we would

like to continue and build on. Anyone with ideas please contact either Dave or me.

In addition to the above goals for 2018, some other accomplishments we made in 2018

were:

Voted on and approved the DBA name change for our association from (CNYSNLA Central

New York State Nursery & Landscape Association) to PLANTCNY (Professional Nursery and

Landscape Trades Association) This is something that has been discussed for the past few

Page 3: The Nursery Scoop · 2015. The name SiteOne was inspired by our role as the green industry professional’s No. 1 destination for the materials, supplies, tools and expertise—providing

years and now gives us the same PLANT acronym that Regions V, VI, & VIII are currently

using.

Added the monthly feature to the SCOOP newsletter of “My Favorite Plant”, and “What’s

Bugging You” having members submit articles. We will continue this in 2019 except for this

January edition. Anyone interested in submitting for either of these, please contact me.

Our most recent PLANTCNY meeting was our annual Holiday Luncheon on December 13th where over 100 were in attendance. It was great to see some members and past members that we have not seen for a while; some traveled from as far away as Buffalo/Rochester. A special thanks to Dave Iannuzzi for another job well done with putting this day and entertainment program together. PLANTCNY continued its 25 year long standing relationship with Toys for Tots. This year the campaign was changed to “Toys for Ted” in memory of long time

member and industry friend Ted Florczyk. We had Ted's sister Teresa Waite and niece Doreen Benedict along with Staff Sergeant Christopher Phillip & Staff Sergeant Jeff Bloissebaez from the United States Marines on hand where we presented a proclamation to Ted’s family changing the name of our campaign from this year forward. We started this campaign at our Clambake in July where the proceeds from the 50/50 went into a “Toys for Ted” fund, as well as requesting donations at our Golf Outing. Part of this year's campaign was the addition of setting up drop-off locations where we had a total of 18 both member and supporter firms being involved. In addition to this we had a record collection from attendees at the luncheon. At the lunch we presented the Marines with a check for $1,000.00 and filled a box van with toys. Thank You to everyone who supported this campaign. More on the lunch listed below. And here is a link to the pictures posted on the PLANTCNY website: https://www.plantcny.com/2018-holiday-party.html

Congratulations to the following people that were recognized at the Luncheon:

Beth Fry – 2018 PLANTCNY Member of the Year Shelly Straub - 2018 PLANTCNY Presidents Award Amy & Chris Coulter from Sky High Turf Farms- 2018 PLANTCNY Phoenix Award Dannielle Carr - 2018 PLANTCNY Special Recognition Award Linda Bennett – 2018 PLANT CNY Special Recognition

Dave Iannuzzi – 2018 PLANTCNY Special Recognition

Unfortunately, we did not have any Scholarship applications submitted for the Peter Gasparini Scholarship, so no scholarship was awarded.

Please join us at our January Monthly meeting on Thursday January 10th, hosted at and by Site One Landscape Supply. Details listed below in the Member Spotlight. Your Education Day Committee has just finalized all the speakers for this year's February 13th Education Day and Trade Show held at the Welch Allyn Lodge in Skaneateles. If you have not registered as either an attendee or vendor, please do so to confirm your place for the day. Registration Forms are attached for your convenience. This is PLANTCNY’s primary revenue generating function that allows us to do the things we do. Please support us by being there. In closing we realized the goals were aggressive but were attainable. Although we made good headway on a number of them, there is still a lot of work to be done. That being said, I have agreed to stay on one more year as president to help us try to attain the goals as well as continue to build the association. But in order to attain these goals we really need more help on not only the Executive Board, but also with our committees. The following paragraph is one that I have included in a number of months of the Scoop and unfortunately, we are no further ahead, and actually took some steps back with Dannielle Carr moving out of our Region. We desperately need to be able to add members to our Executive Board. We are operating with Three Board Members where we should have six. So please get involved, and if you don’t feel you are ready for the Executive Board, we need help on some of our committees that include the Education Day and Trade Show or any other committees.

Thank you,

Dale

CNLP Report, shared with us by Dannielle Carr

Happy New Year!

Turning over new leaves? Be sure your CNLP certification is up to date. Do you need recertification/

education credits? It’s the perfect time to sign up for the Region 4 Trade Show & Education Day on

Wednesday, February 13th. See details elsewhere in the Scoop.

Recertification:

Time to confirm the status of your CNLP 3-year certification period. Not sure of your certification

status? Contact your region 4 rep. If you’re expiring, don’t delay any further; get your re-

certification application and fee into NYSNLA. Registrations expired on December 31. The NYSNLA

CNLP committee offers a generous grace period.

New CNLP applicants:

Applications are due. Review sessions start in a couple of weeks, (see below). Look for application

forms on the NYSNLA website.

https://nysnla.com/images/Education/CNLP/CNLP_New_Candidate_Application_fillable.pdf

Exam applications and registration fees must be returned to NYSNLA and it takes a bit of time to

process – see the mailing address on the form or contact them by email or telephone.

Region 4 - 2019 CNLP exam and review schedule (see below)

Please note, the review schedule below is subject to change depending on the needs of our

group. An updated schedule will be provided directly to registered CNLP candidates and posted in

the Scoop. It’s best to contact your Region rep. to confirm you’ll attend review sessions, and so

everyone is prepared in advance of review sessions with a manual.

Region 4 CNLP committee of “one”

The Region 4 CNLP “committee” needs help! Folks are encouraged to host and lead review

sessions and help with proctoring the exam. It’s fun, really. And you might learn something new or

refresh on something old. Help is needed for the Student CNLP program at Morrisville State College

– currently we don’t have anyone committed to coordinate and lead student reviews. Time spent

volunteering to help with the CNLP program qualifies as recert credits with a few limitations.

Questions? Contact your Region 4 CNLP rep - Dannielle Carr, email: [email protected], 315-471-

0688, extension 640.

Holiday Party Wrap-Up, shared with us by Dave Iannuzzi...

It’s the end of the year and our December luncheon is now behind us. But I did want to

say that this one was special. A great turnout, over 100 people showed up with toys for

our “Toys for Ted” drive, honoring Ted Florczyk. I just want to say thanks to the many

that were there. Some drove a while to be there and that makes it special. It was nice to

talk to people I haven’t seen in a while, not in a hurry to get to their jobsite. Some I

haven’t seen since last year and watched me pick on “me” this year. “Getting Old as a

Landscaper” was my topic and the usual suspects were safe this year. Yes, Beth got her

birthday cake and awards were given to Beth Fry, Dannielle Carr, Shelly Straub and

Chris Coulter. But the main event was Ted Florczyk… the toys given in his name at drop

boxes at our members' locations did not disappoint. A tree was planted in his name at his

church on Teall Ave. The tree was donated by Northern Nurseries – a 3” Japanese Tree

Lilac (thanks, Matt). The money was collected at the clambake 50-50 raffle and was

donated to Toys for Ted, awesome job by just a few.

I hope in the future that our events, like the clambake, luncheon or road trips, that those

who have not done one, try it once and see if it’s for you. We have opened these events to

anyone in the industry, not just members. I have been attending these group meetings

since 1989. I have met many members over the decades and I can say I feel like I belong to

a family – not a group. Many members are some of my good friends and we have a great

bunch of people that are fun to talk to and be around. For those who do not show up to

meetings and events I say do a couple and see what I’m talking about. Maybe some good

friends are waiting for you. Take some time this summer to attend our meetings and you’ll

feel like a part of the family of Region 4. Hope to see you soon. Thank you.

And more event news from Dave I...

Dave has made arrangements for our upcoming Pitch Tournaments, as follows:

Tuesday, January 29th

like to get feedback on what interest there is for any of our members purchasing any of

these items. When we get the feedback we will forward to John who then will finalize pricing

and minimums. Please also note that John has this logo artwork all set for any members

wishing to add this to your company clothing. Please contact Dale Tuttle with your
