Through these informal chats relationships are built be-tween generations and un-derstandings are shared. I value these weekly sessions and appreciate Sue’s com-mitment to Nowendoc Public.

Thank you, Sue!

Please, put the 23rd Septem-ber into your diaries. We would love to see you at our end of term assembly. We promise to entertain you.

Keep smiling!

Goodness! As I went to add ‘the week’ to this newsletter I had to double check. How can it be week 7 already?

Tomorrow is Spring. I am so looking forward to seeing the splendor of Nowendoc in Spring. If the days are any-thing like Sunday was we will be moving our classroom outside. Thanks to the con-venience of laptops and our small school which enables each child to have their own laptop.

We now have another Smart-board. This has been in-stalled in the BER building. The children and I have been hopping between buildings so that we can experience the best of both worlds. This new board has many new features to excite us, includ-

ing the multi-touch function. It also has a 3D projector. The DET will notify me when the ‘magic’ part is available and then the 3D functionality will work. This will open up a new avenue for learning...and fun. Imagine learning about the human body ...in 3D, or visit-ing the Eiffel Tower...in 3D.? And of course, Movie Nights, for our community.

Teaching and learning in the 21st century is a world of wonder and stimulation!

Whilst new innovations keep bombarding us and keeping Tracey and I on our toes ( yes, I know, we both quite like the challenge of pirou-ettes) timeless innovations are still valued.. The work Mrs Sue Lyon does with Mi-kayla and Lis is one of these.

Students enjoyed an after-noon of making princess hats in art last week. They cut, painted, collaged and glit-tered until the girls had com-pleted some very elegant hats fit for a princess. Stu-dents have also enjoyed playing “Throlf” in PE, which

is a combination of throwing underarm into a selection of holes (hence the “olf’ for golf). On their second round students found their accuracy improved remarkably! Prac-tise makes perfect.

Bubble Fun

Whilst Mikayla and Lis were off at their UNE Science Day, Hayley. Emily and Parker had their own science day . It was a day filled with problem solving, sensory exploration and fun.

Play is one of the most powerful avenues for helping young children engage with the curricu-lum and for teachers to address curriculum outcomes in an authentic context . So whilst these pages may look like ‘just play’ , they actually show how much fun quality learning can be.

Don’t you wish you were a kid again!

Science in the Bush On Friday, 19th of August, it was the National Science Week. Lissie and I caught the bus to Mrs Lock’s house so we could travel to the UNE, (University of New England).

We arrived in Armidale at 9:20. We couldn’t find a parking spot at first, but eventually we found one. We walked with the guide up to the hall; we found a seat and listened to which group we would be put in.

First we pretended to be pharmacists and we made hand sanitiser. We used a special alcohol, water and some more ingredients.

Then we went to the chemistry lab. Lissie and I made slime, cold packs, hot packs and so much more. We watched a Liquid Nitrogen rocket take off.

Finally we saw a chemistry magic show. It had explosions, bangs and ice-cream in it.

After we had left we stopped at Uralla and had a drink at the Galloping Gourmet. We also went to the Uralla Sweet Place and bought plenty of lollies.

I had a great time and I hope I get the opportunity to go again. I also think I might be a pharma-cist when I grow up.

Last week it was National Science Week and UNE (University of New England) wanted to invite kids to the university to realise how much fun science can be.

On the 19th of August Mikayla and I caught the bus to Mrs Lock’s house, to go on a trip to Armi-dale, to the University of New England, for Science in the Bush.

During the first activity we made hand sanitiser out of just 4 ingredients. The next activity was the chemistry lab. We got to make slime, cold packs, hot packs and we got to use liquid nitro-gen and dry ice. Then we had lunch and a bit of play time.

After lunch we went to the chemistry magic show which was really interesting. I was lucky enough to try some liquid nitrogen ice-cream! We made volcanoes, we exploded balloons filled with hydrogen and they made loud bangs.

Mrs Lock, Mikayla and I had to leave early so we could make it home, but on the way back we stopped in Uralla, to go to the Sweet Place and The Galloping Gourmet Cafe.

Then we continued on the long, slow trip home.

All up I think it was a fun day and it influenced me to want to become a pharmacist when I grow up.

Thank You Mrs Bourke, for organising the day & Mrs Lock, for driving us there and putting up with our

chatter!

Awards

Having one student of the week is proving too difficult as each of our students displays Responsible, Respectful & Safe Behaviour every week. However, as I believe that public recognition of achievements is a very important part of school life I am trialling a new approach.

Community Library Snippets We have been donated a number of craft magazines that will be available for you to take home and keep. New DVDs: "Make a Quilt" with Pam Holland, "Harley Davidson Milwaukee Marvel" and the story of "John Wesley". Pick of the books: Sandra Brown "Rainwater" set in 1934 in the middle of drought and economic depres-sion. There are great themes of courage, racism, resilience, poverty, all wrapped up in a powerfully moving novel. A great read. Nora Roberts, "Chasing Fire" is an international bestseller about fire fighters, weaving romance and serial-killer crime...a genuinely gripping story. Shirley Shackleton,"The Circle of Silence" - a personal testimony before, during and after Balibo.
