THE NORTHERNAIRES PERFORMANCE HISTORYThe Northernaires Drum & Bugle Corps was formed in 1953 under the name andsponsorship of the D.A.R. Boys Club of Menominee, Michigan. The All-Boy corps, ages 13 to 18, first started out performing at parades in 1954 and first appeared onthe field in competition in 1956. After a naming contest in 1957, the name waschanged to The Northernaires. After 1959, the age requirement was 13 to 21.

From 1956 through 1968 the corps has appeared in 135 contests, winning 51 ofthose and gaining 2nd place in 51. Of the remaining contests, the corps has placed in3rd or less.

The Northernaires have won (7) Upper Michigan American LegionChampionships, (3) Michigan American Legion State Championships, (4)Michigan VFW State Championships, and (4) Wisconsin AMVETS StateChampionships. There was also a run of six straight years without a loss in everyMichigan contest appearance. The corps also had a winning Jr Color Guard whichwas won (1) Upper Michigan American Legion Championship, (4) MichiganAmerican Legion State Championships, and (4) Michigan VFW StateChampionships. The Northernaires are the only corps to hold both the MichiganState Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps and Jr. Color Guard titles! The Northernaires alsoappeared in four (4) Green Bay Packers NFL football game halftime shows.

The Northernaires also had a feeder corps called The Northernlites which wasstarted in 1962 and was active until 1972 and then later revived in 1983 through1985. The Northernlites provided drum corps experience to those aged 9 -12 toperform at local parades and at the local “Drums In The North” field show.

In 1970, The Northernaires allowed girls into the corps and the following yearplaced 8th in the 1971 American Legion National Championship in Houston,Texas. The corps also appeared in the first 1972 DCI World Championship inWhitewater, Wisconsin taking 32nd place and also appeared in the 1973 DCI WorldChampionship finishing 44th.

In 1974, The Northernaires did not field a corps. In 1975 an attempt was made toput together an “All Male” senior corps but it did not materialize. The corps did field acompetitive summer guard. In 1976 the corps was renamed The Shoreliners All-Girl Drum & Bugle Corps after a merger with The Patriots Drill Team fromMarinette, WI. The new corps performed mainly in parades. In 1977, TheShoreliners allowed boys back in and appeared on the field in exhibition for the local“Drums In The North” contest held in Marinette, Wisconsin. The Shoreliners alsoappeared in many judged parades and exhibitions and appeared at the 1977Michigan American Legion Championship in Lansing, Michigan. Also in 1977,The Shoreliners sponsored a competitive winter color guard which appeared inmany WGI and Midwest Color Guard shows throughout the Midwest.

In 1978 the corps changed its name back to The Northernaires and performedmainly in parades. In 1980, a small group of Northernaires alumni performed as acolor guard in local parades. The junior corps saw a rebound in 1982 with a largecorps again and competed in many regional parades. In 1983 The Northernairesperformed at many judged parades and also appeared in an exhibition in a contest

held in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The corps fielded about 60 members. The 1983corps also sponsored a competitive winter color guard in the WGI and MidwestColor Guard circuits.

In 1984, The Northernaires merged with The Royal Knights Drum & Bugle Corpsfrom Manitowoc, Wisconsin to get back on the field in competition and appeared inseveral DCM and DCI contests throughout the Midwest. The corps gained several2nd and 3rd places or less in 15 contests and placed 18th place in the 1984 DrumCorps Midwest Championship held in DeKalb, Illinois.

In 1985, The Northernaires joined the Drum Corps Midwest (DCM) circuit anddeveloped a field show to attempt to go back on the field as The Northernaires. Butdue to inconsistent practice attendances, the corps was unable to do so and opted toperform in parades only.

After the 1985 season, the corps organized as an alumni group and performed anexhibition for the 1986 & 1987 “Drums In The North” contests in Menominee,Michigan. The Northernaires went inactive again from 1988 to 1992 and laterreappeared in winter color guard competitions in the WGI and Michigan ColorGuard circuits from 1993 to 2001.

In 1992 several Northernaires alumni decided to get a group together and march inthe Menominee, Michigan, Waterfront Festival parade. Since then the group hasadded performing a standstill in the festival area after the parade and also invitedseveral local senior and alumni corps like the Ishpeming Blue Notes, OntonagonMountaineers, and Bessemer’s Marty’s Goldenaires to join them since 1999.

In 1999 The Northernaires organized a senior corps with the intent of joining DCA &DCM to become a competitive field corps again. After one year of marching parades, the senior corps concept fell through although the alumni corps has maintainedsuccess.

In 2009 The Northernaires became a founding member of the Small Drum CorpsAssociation (SDCA) which was created to provide small drum corps a venue toperform a show indoors in arenas or basketball courts. The Arena Corps show canalso be done on football fields between the 30 yard lines and mid-field. The corpshosted the first ever SDCA show with the return of the “Drums In The North”contest in Menominee, Michigan. The SDCA show is unique in that it uses anAudience Choice Award given to the top two performers selected by the audiencethrough cell phone text messaging (another drum corps first). The shows are alsojudged but for comments only. The corps performed a full field show at its homeshow and in other contests in Fond du Lac, WI and McHenry, IL. The corps wonfirst place in the show at Fond du Lac and placed second at McHenry.

The Northernaires continue to sponsor an alumni corps and perform at the annualWaterfront Festival parade and concert in Menominee, Michigan. The annualfestival is looked forward by many as a reunion to be with many friends and relativesand to be able to perform again in front of thousands.

The Northernaires is under the umbrella of The Northernaires Music andMarching Groups, Inc, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, and has beencontinuously operating since 1953 and will be celebrating its 58th year in 2011. Thecorps stays financially alive through private donations and had once operated abingo from 1973 until 2001.

The historical performances and scores were compiled from several drum corpspublications, internet and newspaper articles. Some performance appearances arebased from interviews with alumni and from my personal experiences. The list is onlypartial and is a living document which will be updated occasionally.

I hope you enjoy reading and may this bring back great memories!
