Listed below are frequently asked questions about the Black History Month ‘at your school’ performance. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, email the Museum of London’s secondary schools team via [email protected].

Can you tell me more about the performance?

The performance celebrates the achievements of Black African and Caribbean Londoners through time. Three actors take on several different roles and the performance is supported by a PowerPoint presentation and accompanying music.

Which space should I book at school?

The performance is intended to be performed to whole year groups. You will need to book out your school hall.

What technical elements are there to the show?

The performers will bring a PowerPoint presentation. This needs to be displayed behind the actors whilst they are performing. The performers will supply their own sound system, but this will need to be plugged in close to where the slides for the PowerPoint can be changed.

How long does the performance last?

The performance is 50 minutes long. We suggest allocating an hour for each performance. This means there will be time for questions at the end, and time for your students to enter and leave the hall.

How many performances can there be in one day?

The actors are prepared to perform three times in one day, to three different year groups. We prioritise bookings from schools that can cater for more than 350 students in one day.

How many actors are part of the performance?

Three actors and one facilitator will need to arrive at your school at least an hour before the first performance is due to begin. They will need access to the school hall to set up prior to the first performance. They will require a parking space in your school car park so they can bring all their technical equipment.

How many teachers need to be in the hall during the performance?

Teachers are responsible for the students’ behaviour during the whole performance. We suggest there is one teacher in the hall for every 30 students.

Are there any interactive elements to the performance?

Students are encouraged to interact with the performance through responding positively to its messages of individual achievement and cultural celebration ie clapping/cheering. Around halfway through, three to five students will be invited to the stage to showcase their talent. This section of the performance is to encourage the students to reflect on their own individual achievements. If the show starts more than 15 minutes late, this section may be skipped.

Which individuals are highlighted throughout the performance?

Below is a small selection of the people celebrated throughout the performance:

Olaudah Equiano: a freed enslaved African and abolitionist. He wrote a book about his life as an enslaved African

Claudia Jones: started the Notting Hill Carnival in 1959

Billy Waters: a popular musician who lived in London 200 years ago

Pauline Black: former lead singer of the band The Selector and a well-known actress

Blair Peach: a London school teacher who campaigned for racial equality

William Wilberforce: an MP who made speeches against the slave trade in the 19th century

Granville Sharp: a major campaigner against slavery who founded the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: a famous composer of classical choral works

Jazzy B: founded Soul II Soul in the 1980s. A famous DJ and producer

Ignatius Sancho: a freed enslaved African and abolitionist. A well-known writer and composer, he frequently wrote condemning slavery

Robert Wedderburn: a radical abolitionist. His father owned his mother as a slave and he spent time in prison because he spoke out about slavery

Ms Dynamite: Mercury prize and MOBO award-winning rapper, singer and songwriter

Mary Seacole: a Jamaican nurse in the 1850s. She was not allowed to work for the army because of the colour of her skin. She decided to work anyway and saved many men’s lives in the Crimean War

Buchi Emecheta: a famous Nigerian writer who lived in London

Joseph Johnson: a black entertainer who was in London over 200 years ago. He made money as a street performer by carrying a model ship on his head

Doreen Lawrence: her son Stephen was killed by racists in 1993. She proved that the police system was unfair and campaigned for the law to be changed

Michael Mansfield: a leading barrister who fights for miscarriages of justice. He represented the Lawrence family in the 1998 enquiry

Why does the performance not highlight the achievements of Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King?

The performance is focused on the lives of Black African and Caribbean Londoners. We categorise Londoners as people who were born or lived in London for a significant amount of time. This means that some of the most famous people who campaigned for black rights are not covered within the performance.

I loved the performance but have some feedback. Who can I tell?

Feedback forms are handed to the teachers at the start of each performance. We would be delighted to read any feedback you have. If you do not receive a form, you can email feedback to [email protected]

I booked the Black History Month performance last year. Can I book again?

There is a high demand for our Black History Month performance and we only have a limited number of performances each year. We ask that you do not book the performance every year; instead we suggest you have a two to three year break in between booking the performances.
