SHALE NEWSMarcellus shale boom means more than drilling jobsBy Timothy Puko, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEWSunday, February 26, 2012

The gas rush is poin4ng Rusty Margaria toward what he hopes will be a career.

Margaria, 27, of West Middletown started working with Western Land Services Inc. in Cecil in October 2010 as anentry-level 4tle searcher and earned a promo4on to team leader less than a year later. He has seen that kind of life-changing opportunity happen for others in Washington County, where he has lived most of his life, he said.

"By the 4me I was growing up, (Avella) was the pre5y ragged le%overs of a coal town," said Margaria, who droppedout of college at 19 with a newborn at home and worked in retail for more than four years, o%en balancing two jobs."It's definitely been a big difference, just seeing these local people struggle for so many years, and now, having that fi-nancial backing, they don't have to struggle."

Largely because of energy sector growth, including drilling for gas in Marcellus shale, life is changing for people inWashington County. Its job growth ranked in the top five na4onally when federal sta4s4cs trackers compared the firstand second quarters of 2011 to the year prior.

Butler County, bolstered by Wes4nghouse Electric Co.'s move from Monroeville, ranked near the top na4onally in joband wage growth, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The drilling industry has helped people across Pennsylvania, said Kurt Rankin, an economist with PNC Financial Serv-ices Group, Downtown.

"It's like found money," Rankin said. "It does have a secondary spillover effect in that the jobs that are created thereare rela4vely high-paying jobs. That brings an en4rely new income base to those coun4es."

From 2000 to 2007, the state recorded 17,000 to 20,000 workers in mining and logging, Department of Labor recordsshow. That has jumped by more than 50 percent, largely since May 2009. More than 33,000 Pennsylvanians workedin that sector as of November.

About 1,000 of those jobs are in Washington County, where average annual salaries in the sector climbed from about$60,000 through most of the decade to $82,400 in 2010, the most recent sta4s4cs available. The county also addedjobs in professional and business services, construc4on, leisure and hospitality, trade and transporta4on, and finance;industry- and state-funded economic studies link some of that job growth to the drilling industry.

Butler County surpassed several coun4es in drilling permits, largely because gas there can contain propane and otherhydrocarbons, which can increase its price.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC planned this month to start adding about 20 wells in Butler and Lawrence coun4es.

Rex Energy Corp. intends to ramp up produc4on, and one of its joint ventures, Keystone Midstream Services LLC, plansto open a processing plant in Jackson in spring. The company will need 120 construc4on workers for the site and 30 tobuild a pipeline, said Michael Brinkmeyer, Keystone's general manager. It has four other projects pending.

"That makes me very excited," Hunter said. "I see Western Pennsylvania and Butler County as being a hot spot for thewhole country."

The drilling boom came at the right 4me, during an economic downtown, said Emil Veal, vice president at StephensonEquipment Inc. in Washington County.

"It has taken over our business -- a lot more than the construc4on we're used to doing," Veal said. "We would have beenin serious trouble if not for that."

Frank Puskarich thought his restaurant, Hog father's Old Fashioned BBQ, would make $15,000 to $16,000 a week. In-stead, it is doing double that -- nearly $2 million in annual sales, he said. He opened a second restaurant and plans toopen a third this summer to cater to workers at well sites. On the busiest days, he has 800 to 1,000 meals to prepareby noon.

"I'm blessed. I say it every day," said Puskarich, 57, of Peters. "This is like Grand Central Sta4on for people in the gasbusiness at lunch 4me."

Not everyone is benefi4ng.

Barbara Sobolewski passes at least three well sites as she drives from her Mt. Pleasant home to the McDonald Phar-macy she owns, but the drilling boom hasn't brought her customers, and she doesn't know anyone who has bene-fited, she said.

That might be because many early recruits came from other states. Adam Stoffella sees a few new customers at his Mc-Donald barbershop, but doesn't expect any big change in business because most gas well workers are from out-of-state, he said.

"It's all eventually going to come to an end," he said. "You either have property and you're making money, or you don'tand you're jealous. It's like winning the lo5ery."

PRODUCT INNOVATION, EMPLOYMENTNew 3DSO™ Plunger Arrival Sensor from PCS

Frederick, CO, February 1, 2012 - Production Control Services Inc. (PCS) recently in-

troduced its new 3DSO™ Plunger Arrival Sensor for plunger lift wells. Mounted on

the surface lubricator, the 3DSO detects the plunger’s arrival and activates the con-

troller to the appropriate mode for gas sales or shut-in. The arrival sensor’s proprietary

technology represents significant improvements in plunger ar-

rival sensing.

Driven by an embedded microprocessor, the 3DSO continually

self-calibrates to filter out environmental noise. It uses advanced

3-D technology—like that used in military and navigation appli-

cations—to detect the plunger’s arrival. By sensing the plunger

in three coils in three axes (X, Y and Z), the sensor is able to more

accurately detect plunger arrival.

The combination of the microprocessor and 3-D technology en-

ables the 3DSO to detect arrival of the plunger traveling at any

speed, even if the plunger is stopped in front of the sensor. This

is a major advancement from past technology.

Says Andrew Boldt, Vice President, “By accurately sensing the

plunger’s arrival every time, the 3DSO allows for optimal plunger

lift operations. Because it continually self-calibrates, it offers vir-

tually maintenance-free operation, eliminating operator inter-

vention and production downtime.”

PCS does extensive quality control on each sensor. The sensors go through a 25-point,

3-axes electronic test, as well as a functionality test. All the test data is stored elec-

tronically within the unit, making it easily retrievable.

PCS also designed the 3DSO to ensure long term durability in the field. It features a

rugged aluminum housing that won’t flex when installed and potted electrical com-

ponents to protect against harsh weather conditions.

The PCS 3DSO Plunger Arrival Sensor is patent pending. To learn more or download

a product data sheet, visit www.pcslift.com.

About Production Control ServicesSince 1985, Production Con-

trol Services Inc. (PCS) has focused solely on production opti-

mization. Its products and services include the PCS Plunger Lift,

mization experts in more than 30 locations in the major oil and

gas plays throughout the U.S. and Alberta, Canada. For more in-
