Vol.XXXII Issue No. 31 January 26 - February 1, 2015 TO SHED LIGHT on the issues faced by the university, Officer-in-Charge Dr. Peter T. Dayot explained the current situation of NORSU assuring the students, teachers- instructors, faculty members and parents that everything is under control. “Normal lang dapat ta , although we are in an abnormal situation, we have to continue the day-to-day activities.” Thus was the concluding statement Dayot addressed to everyone concerned. Lastimosa, not making it on the top five. Earlier days before the pageant, I am really expecting that MJ

could poise and pave way to the Miss Universe crown. Seeing her photos on the net are proofs that she is really a strong candidate with an undeniable physical beauty. In fact, there are lots of predictions from beauty experts saying that MJ could be on top because of her potential and confidence which are evident. Other seemed to have verdict and logic that this time could be a glorious year for Philippines since Filipina beauties have been in a four-year unbroken streak at the top five of the pageant.

This year pageant’s result may be displeasure to many Filipinos around the world, but having MJ as the Philippines’ runner is a great pride for the country. Do you want to know why? Well, being one of her followers on Facebook, I could read several articles featuring MJ’s personality. The first thing I’ve noted from her is the patience and perseverance she has in herself. As far as I could remember, MJ has patiently joined the Binibining Pilipinas three times where in after those three years of waiting, 2014 was her turn to have the coveted crown. Another thing about MJ is being a friendly buddy of everybody. During her competition last year, she did not only gain the unwavering supports of her fans but as well as the majority of Pinay ex- beauty queens.

More so, one thing that I like her the most was the response she delivered to one of her interviews about the negative comments from the people. She said and I quote “I look at it on a positive way that maybe there’s a point why they are saying that. So, I evaluate myself as well. If they say something that I need to improve on, I focus on that and try to be the best that I could be.” This statement really conveyed my senses, making me amazed how MJ humbly takes into consideration the comments she received from other people. Most of us oftentimes really have the difficulty to accept criticisms, but MJ proved that it could happen in a simple way.

Perhaps, the show this year may not be for the Philippines, but as Filipinos, let’s be happy and proud to have beauties that appears inside and out.

The truth, life back then was difficult. So difficult that you would want to delve on possibilities of living more easily yet the resources of doing so are scarce and are hard to find. Back then, you have to exert more than the average effort for you to finish something.

If doing your assignments today is a hassle, how will you prosper and handle things in the past? If studying your lessons today bore you, how will you pass all your subjects in the past if your study buddy is a candle light? If cleaning something today is done through the help of electronics, how will you bear the exhaustion if you were to live in the past?

Try to think of your mother doing these things in the past. Do you think they liked it? Do you think it was easy for them? Do you think they desired those things to happen for them? Now that you are in the advanced world, in what position will you consider yourself into? You think. You move! Literally.

And for the parents who do not want their children to suffer the things in the past, you could be dwelling in the wrong perception. Because by doing so, you are barring yourselves from the correct values a child must claim. By bearing on that principle, you might be teaching your child to become lazy individuals, whether you like it or not. And this will reflect on whatever they do, especially on school works. Good thing if your son or daughter was born innately to be responsible or kind or hardworking. Or they are not abusing your gentle being. But these things will never be acclaimed if you are not teaching them the right things to do. You’re teaching you child the wrong way.

I think it would be better if they themselves will realize the hardships of yesterday. I think it would be nice if you will let them experience the things that you had felt in the past. The essence of exerting lots of effort done manually to finish a job. The value of appreciating one thing because you did it with your own sweat and blood. The virtue of appreciating the time lapsed just to do one thing after another. We can do this in our own little ways. All we have to do is move!

Anyways, please let me do the honor to thank my World Literature teacher for giving me the idea for this column.

“I don’t want my child to suffer the same situations that I just had before.”

I could always remember the lines from lots of parents nowadays. Of course! Who would want their child to experience the hardships of yesterdays?

But it could be of a little problem.Well, technology is an easy grip. Access to this ever

dynamic thing is a grace from the manmade environment. Just one touch and presto, a work is done. You can even finish a thing just by sitting—or pressing something to do it for you. Aba! It’s like the real world representation of Hogwarts—only we’re pressing buttons on controls, not swaying wands or chanting spells.

Now, allow me to let you on a ride for our journey back to history where no technological advancement was made, or to the time where civilization was still a virgin (if that’s the correct term to be used) and a pulp that still has to bloom. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in your remote area with nothing on hand.

What did you see? I bet you see nothing. Because it’s either you did not dare to imagine the ill fate, you were filled with fear upon thinking of the past, or you were just lazy doing so.

let them lead the way?

Boom! Boom! Paw!

Are you the type of person who likes to stalk beautiful faces over social networking sites like Facebook? If you’re the one, then count yourself to the world of stalkers-slash-followers. Frankly speaking, I am not totally obsessive to that thing. But I admit, I can be the one for some time. Well, I can say that those pretty looks I see on screen just make me inspired and perhaps give me another reason to appreciate the beauty of life. They also remind me to live my life beautifully. Too much for that, let’s go to the point I really wanted to tackle.

Last Monday, January 26, the whole universe was in great excitement on who will be the next ambassadress of beauty. While everyone are hooked-up by the television, cheering and watching the appealing faces and figures aired over the screen, I was busy editing those news articles submitted late. Honestly, I really tried my best to finish the stuff quickly just to witness, even at least the last part of the prestigious pageant, but I was a bit disappointed for not making it. One more thing that made me saddened harder was the fate of our country’s representative Mary Jean

It’s not about winning

“I shall return!” Certainly, this degree of aptitude must be of the same tone

as with our own University president Don Vicente C. Real, but issues just seem to hinder him from his goal of coming back.

Obviously as it seems, NORSU Board of Regents (BOR) members, except for a few, might have drawn to a common consensus in penalizing Real for his wrong deeds and of course, their contention must be backed up with underlying legalities.

Recently on January 21, 2015, night before Real’s first 90-day suspension order would expire, another 90-day suspension has been served against him through BOR Resolution No. 29, series of 2015.

Thus was issued after the BOR has found out the existence of a prima facie case for Grave Misconduct and Gross Insubordination based on the Preliminary Investigation Report submitted by the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG).

The administrative complaint points out evident findings regarding some alleged illegal transactions executed in the time of Real. To mention, as grounds for the issuance of the additional 90-day suspension, the school under Real’s supervision, pursued with the public bidding of the “Major Repair of HM Building”, the execution of the Contract of Agreement dated September 30, 2013, with VESA Engineering and Construction, signed by Real, and authorizing the release of funds to VESA without prior approval of the NORSU BOR and in violation of Section 51 (2), Chapter 12, Book I of Executive Order No. 292, otherwise known as the “Administrative Code of 1987”.

However, these still have to undergo a more deliberate scrutiny. In fact, the BOR approved for the release of a total of P500, 000 as an initial budget to cover honoraria, traveling expenses, meals, accommodation and all other incidental and actual expenses for the investigation.

Wow! A handful amount is allocated for the investigation, while students, on the other hand, bend their trunks picking up rubbishes along the hallways, sweeping the terrains like janitors. But if that budget will aid the immediate resolution of the university issues, then why not?

Anyway, right now, the biggest question is just floating in the war-beaten atmosphere of our humble university. Will our university president be able to gain back his office and clean the stains on his name?

As the campus media is concerned, we should keep abreast to the latest issues directly affecting us for in one way or another, we are greatly affected. Instead of focusing on strengthening the quality education, our university leaders seem to be chained by the infuriating anomalies with the deafening BOOM! BOOM! PAW!

Dear TN,

January 26 - February 1, 2015

I am a first year student and a state scholar. I am having problems with upholding my grades and that I am hoping that I will not lose my scholarship, I am already over that “study hard and get good grades” thing, because sometimes it’s not that simple. my teacher gives exams that are out-of-context of her past lessons. how can I handle this situation? –mischa

Hi Mischa,It’s a true context that life gives unexpected surprises that may or may not be on your desired proportion. Since you’re

practicing helpful ways to pursue your career, then there’s nothing for you to worry about. We suggest that you must not confuse yourself with the lessons you have. Just focus your attention on understanding clearly how those matters grow complicated. Always think that the given questions were not out of line and not that hard. If your teacher gives exams that are far from the lectured points, then you have to tell her that something is not right. Bear in your intellectual mind that if you tried to work with your weaknesses, then you could be able to succeed in life. So keep up a good start! –TN

“Sinulog! Siyagit ug kusog, Pit Señor, Pit Señor! Kita magsaulog!”

The shouts, the cries, the dances and the prayers of the people for the miraculous holy Child echoed through the streets of Cebu City for this remarkable event.

Who has never been earshot by the famous Sinulog Festival of Cebu City which made the streets harmonically drenched with prosperous reverberations? The people’s cries and sacrifices for the Holy Child of Cebu, locally known as Sugbu, who has been testified to have a miraculous endeavors for the ill and the needy.

at the age of antiquityEvery dance interpretation lays behind a

mysterious history of the past that made everything to be in a vivid picture. The history of the Sinulog Festival was as historical as the heroic events of the valiant personages of the ancient times.

It was on April 15, 1521, when Magellan arrived and planted a cross on the shores of Cebu and started the Christianity in our nation. He presented the image of Santo Ni as a baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, the loving wife of Rajah Humabon, which she was later named as Queen Juana. Then, there was the baptismal right of more than 800 inhabitants of the island.

It is said that Queen Juana danced while carrying the image which was then the motivation to the whole nation to be called the first Sinulog.

And if you’re curious about how the dances of Sinulog first originated, well, here’s an insight.

It started from a miracle of Rajah Humabon’s adviser, Baladhay. He was in great sickness, contained in a room where an image of the Holy Child was enthroned. A few days passed and the Cebuanos noticed Baladhay shouting and was found dancing with extreme alertness. He was then dancing with the movements of the river. Until today, these movements greatly influenced what Sto. Nino’s devotees do in dancing Sinulog.

When I enter the age of delicate maturity, decision-making definitely was not a good friend of my plateful mental power. All the deeds I made were as ungratifying as what most icons in opera did in the last chapter of real life situations. Perhaps, it’s partly unmolded!

I’ve met this someone of honorable title in life with disrespectful and superior attribute. Values and good ethics was not glued in the designation, instead, it’s the superiority of one’s power. If you got those circlet of triumph, then you’re considered authoritative yet harmless. No matter what your actions would be, you’ll always be in line even if you had stepped beyond the limitations of criticizing.

Who am I to oppose? And so, I just blamed myself for the made mistake.

“Unsa man ning akong kinabuhi! Puro na lang failures, kasakit ug kaguol sa akong mga buhat!” I told the futile side of mine. But behind the ruthless intellects of man, I’ve permanently narrated a piercing and earsplitting response to that person.

“Ay! Ganun? Hilas pud siya kaayo mura pud ug perfect ug flawless iyang mga thoughts sa kinabuhi! After all, tawo ra man na siya! Naay weakness ug flaws. Maypag iyang gi refill iyang attitude nga dili makaon ug iro. Manlibak! Sagdi ra karma na lang ako.”

I stopped that senseless and imprudent scripted sentences and focused my attention to accept that everyone has been perfectly injected with jealousy throughout someone’s journey that if a person lighted his way to success, someone would breeze a malevolent character to stop it from shining and flaring.

Why can’t I be like other people whom discovered themselves with ease and far from blood-curdling judgments of the society? Might be, they are molding me to be a better one? Don’t think so! Guess it’s another wicked persona dragging to reach the summit of virtual fulfillment up until nothing is left!

I’ve continued asking myself on how those people carry their lives without worries of one’s feeling yet there’s no response—only frames of negative atmospheres which pop out dramatic presentations.

Yes I tried to stop the precious tears from falling! Truly I did! But I end up crying in the game. But don’t leave pity in my situation. Allot it to those who offers envy and resentment!

“Bitaw kabalo kos akong kapasidad lakip usa ka estudyante, pero dapat pud dagway kong tagaan ug respect ug worth though were not on the same level! Ang ako ra ang korona sa pagrespeto kay puro ra ta tawo nga mapanaw ang naapan lang is naa tay lain-laing title sa kinabuhi. Ayaw pud lamang ug pasulabi ‘coz you can’t just judge someone because of its single performance. Hulat-hulat lang inday! Process man na siya! Kaw ba!”

My emotions are now mixed and seem like my dignity has no right to defend its worth. I may commit errors in life, but a disrespectful man doesn’t own the right and privilege to destroy my aim to pursue what I wished for. Believing that it’s nature to be dumb sometimes. Thus, I must be careful this time and continue to move away from entertaining those unhelpful judgments of society.

Gorabells simply wished that somehow people could realize the importance of respect toward its associates and fellows.

a very prodigious Sinulog Grand Parade that’s filled with beautifully decorated props of the devoted enthusiastic dancers. Before the culminating event, a Fluvial Parade is to take place which sails from Mandaue City until Cebu City. Carried by boats are decked stands with hundreds of flowers and candles that illuminate the shores of the island.

Indeed, Roman Catholics are very passionate to Sto. Niño. You would never even be bothered to ask why in the world these people travel miles just to celebrate one of the Philippine Christian’s special upshots of the year! Well, here it is.

Ancient times until now, Sto. Niño has been conveyed to have been healing people over the years. So as Catholics as most of us are, we always resort to a healing session than spending millions in hospital just to be cured. You just have to be faithful and nothing harmful will happen.

The divergent Human as we are, we could never assume that there

are no contradictions on every spiritual activities by different religious sectors.

If you’re going to ask other religious areas except for those who worship Jesus Christ through sanctifying the image of Sto. Niño, they would criticize the whole idea. They would ask why Roman Catholics praise saints and their images when instead it is against the commandments given by God.

Actually, Sto. Niño was popularly considered as the official patron of Cebu, but the Church in the

Philippines suppressed the notion and clarified that it is not the representation of a saint that intercedes to God

but rather of God himself (specifically, Jesus Christ). So to sum it up, Santo Nino is the young Jesus Christ.

Misinterpretations and confusions are very obvious between different flanks on who really Sto. Niño is. The thing is, it depends on how you deduce things. But as mortals, being faithful is all that matters to call yourself a true Christian.

so, if that’s how your faith works, then be it! offer yourself to god and never doubt on something that would just bounce you off with a vague idea on your faith to whom you would really acclaim. Be still and stand firm in your faith!

ThRee FaCUlTy memBeRs of the College of Nursing, dentistry, Pharmacy and allied health sciences (CNdPahs) presented research proposals in a seminar conducted by the department of science and Technology (dosT) held in Cebu on January 20.

Representing Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) to the seminar were Analiza Bais, Girlie Odonel and Susan Lim Uy. In collaboration with other state universities and colleges from Region 7, NORSU presented two research proposals.

The first proposal entitled “Assessment of Disaster Risk Management among Hospitals in Negros Oriental” was presented with the faculty from St. Paul University Dumaguete and Cebu Institute of Medicine.

IN hIs aIm to strengthen the Christian spirit and to inspire the people with god’s word, Pope Francis visited the Philippines, January 15 -19.

President Benigno Aquino III and Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle led the warm welcome for the pope together with thousands of Filipinos waiting to see him.

Pope Francis first delivered homilies that were first held in Malacañang, where it was attended by government officials and other delegates. In his speech, he encouraged the government officials “to reject every form of corruption which diverts resources from the poor.”

The pope then delivered another message at the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica wherein bishops, priests and other religious others from around the country attended together

To make sTUdeNTs aware of the current science developments, the department of science and Technology (dosT) held science film festival particularly in the related courses of engineering, biology, chemistry, geology, computer science and information technology on January 21.

The Science Film Festival (SFF) is a celebration of science communication and enjoys a unique position in Southeast Asia, North Africa and Middle East. The SSF seeks to promote science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through the medium of film and television content as it presents films that explain scientific issues, accessibility and entertainingly, to broad audience.

In the field of engineering, “Robot Revolution: Will Machines Surpass Humans, The Sum of Its Parts” was presented to the students which talked about how robots evolve and help humans to work in different aspects. In addition, the humanoid robot invented by Japan engineers known as Asimo was also featured.

In the fields of biology, chemistry and geology, “Graphene: Sketches of our Future, Post Petroleum Age, The Lithium Revolution” was the topic presented in the film that showcased about the energy revolution.

some NoRsUNIaNs shaRed their sentiments on the reduced fare ordinance which resulted to a strike of most dumaguete drivers on January 21.

According to a senior Bachelor of Science in Business Administration student, Renato Quimno, he wasn’t able to come early for school because of the uninformed strike.

“No proper information dissemination jud and sobra siya [strike] nakaguba sa akong adlaw kay galakaw rajud tawn me,” he said.

Furthermore, Quimno opined on the approved reduced fair saying that the local government must consider the effects it brings to both consumers and tricycle drivers.

“Nagbuhat unta sila [local government] ug balaod in a win-win situation wherein the welfare of such ordinance implementation will not just be for consumers but for the drivers as well,” he said.

To both sophomore Associate in Secretarial Science students Regie Mae Flores and Catherine Quisel, the strike made their day worst.

“Kapoy kaayo og lakaw nya haggard jud mi from NORSU all the way sa among site sa pag-OJT,” they said.

Moreover, Mary Grace Erolon and Iris Yangco, both senior Office System Management

(OSM) students felt the disadvantage at the same time the advantage of the strike encountered.

“Naka-hassle siya sa amo for the reason nga wala man lang mi nila gi-inform ahead,” Erolon said.

“But if we look on the brighter side, nawala pud ang traffic because of it [strike],” Yangco said.

For Pierce Unabia, an Industrial Technology student whom felt satisfied due to the traffic-free situation said, “Hayahay kaayo i-drive, especially to us nga ga-motor.”

For a tricycle driver, Rene Penlope, he said, “Nag-strike mi tungod sa fare nga from P9.00 nga nahimong P6.50”.

Also another pedicab driver, Arnel Matta suggested the local government must balance the fare. “Dili pud maba ang plite unta og dili pud taas-taas,” he said.

He continued, “Kinahanglan pod muhatag ang gobyerno og konsiderasyon namo. Kay gasolina ra biya ang nibarato, dili ang tanang palaliton. Naa pa ju’y mga gastos para paayo if maguba.

with inviled individuals. He said, “Only by becoming poor ourselves, by stripping away our complacency, will we be able to identify with the least of our brothers and sisters.”

Pope Francis gave another message at Mall of Asia Arena emphasizing, “Families will always have their trials, but may you never add to them! Instead, be living examples of love, forgiveness and care.”

Moreover, Pope Francis flew to Tacloban the following day where he received the hospitable welcome of the Taclobanons who suffered so much during the most horrible storm Yolanda that struck their place and killed thousands of people in Novermber 2013.

“When I saw from Rome that catastrophe, I had to be here. And on those very days I decided to come here. I am here to be with you–a little bit late, but I’m here,” Pope Francis said during

and Computer Science courses tackled about “Supercomputers, Taming the Quantum World, The Joy of Logic, Catalyst: 3D Virus” explaining how to solve global energy problems.

Science research assistant Sean Adrian Guardiano said the event was first time to be conducted in NORSU. “I am happy in such short notice, okay ra pud sa mga students kay nag-concentrate ra pud sila”, Guardiano added.

The said activity was conducted by DOST in cooperation with Science Education Institute to some secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the province which include the Negros Oriental High School, Dumaguete City Science High School, Silliman University and NORSU.

Co-sponsoring the event was Goethe-Institut, a German company.

A fourth year Information Technology student, Richel Mae Dennison, said, “It (science film festival) is very refreshing and very educational too. It helps students think outside the box.”

After the film showing, a senior student taking up BS Electrical Engineering Loreto Gaso Jr. realized that he still needs to know more about electronics.

“I am an enthusiast in electronics, after seeing the DOST film, I realized that I still knew less and I’m inspired to bring the best out of me even we have limited resources,” Gaso Jr. added. – By Irish mae s. Cuaresma

the holy mass celebration at Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport.

Furthermore, the pope attended the Youth gathering at the University of Sto. Tomas and heard four messages from the youth sector. What attracted him most was the speech of Glyzelle Palomar, a street child in Manila who suffered physical abuse, abandoned by parents and now under the care of Tulay ng Kabataan charity. The child asked, “Bakit po ba kailangan naming maghirap? Kahit hindi po kasalanan ng mga bata.” The pope just embraced Palomar.

Pope Francis celebrated a Eucharistic mass at Quirino Grandstand; and before leaving the country, he encouraged Filipinos to be prayerful.

Norsunians opinedMichelle Mae Paabroquez, a

freshman Associate Secretarial Science

student, “Tsada kaayo sa feeling kay after pila ka years, nakavisit ang pope diri sa Philippines and he really gave time to the Filipinos especially the poor, children, and handicapped.”

Meanwhile, Claudine Glariana, a junior Education student said, “It’s really a privilege that our country

was visited by Pope Francis. What I admired most was his words of wisdom that are coming from God. We, as Filipinos proved that despite all problems we encountered still, our faith is still stronger than the storm.” (With reports from ABS-CBN and Rappler.com) – By Niña marie T. Pino

accordance with BOR approval and that he is most obedient about it, Dayot noted.

He also discussed during the in te rv iew tha t un t i l the Annua l Procurement Plan (APP) of the year 2015 is approved, and after the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) is constituted, then NORSU will have the normal flow of activities and services, such as the janitorial and security services inside the university.

DAYOT CLARIFIES... from page 1 of Bais City, a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Team was sent to assure the safety of NORSU authorities.

The suspended president’s wife, Letty Real, told the media not to record the scene in contention that the act was treating them like criminals. “It’s not the right time to serve a suspension order or any letter…it’s just not right to bother the family on this time of the evening,” she said.

Dr. Real’s daughter, Venus Real, in her family’s behalf, said Dr. Real was not in the house and asked Abellon to come back without

a SWAT Team and media men recording the scene, however, due to the urgency to serve the suspension, Abellon pursued reading the suspension order in front of Real’s wife and some other family members.

After the incident happened, the team deserted the residence and drove back to the police station where Abellon wrote a narrative report for a police blotter to be submitted to the BOR.

In an interview, Abellon said, “The suspension order is considered good as served.”
