Occasional collections of fish from Tawzanian rivers drai.ning into the Indi-an. Oce,an, have been made since about the middle o f the nine teenth .century. From them, a val'icty t)f species have b een idcr1-t-i.ficd rand described . During the course of a period of service with the Pishuries Division o f the Tanzan ian Ministry of Agricuilturc, and i·n particular from an c.x.poo ition in 1965 with Dr. E . TRBWAVAS from tho British Natuml History Museum, rthc authot· has been ab1le to add to distribution rec.ords and to make fm·ther colle-c tions frrom thi s region or Africa. From these, and other avairlable material in the Btitish Museum, an annotated chec k-li-st of non-cichhd fishes has been drawn up, o.1nd is prcsenrted in the fulilrowing acwunt. For the interest and irnfo.Prnalion of future ini\Jiestigators, it is ptrcfuced by a Hs t o f the eastward fd owing rirvcrs of Tanzanja, and a s umma ry of the pdndpal reolrlec tors and litera ture. It is rOOnclucleu wirth some 7.00geographkail consid erations.
