The month of August has come and gone. We ended July strong with our community service project set up by Director Terri Landon with a group of hard working Niles Rotarians helping to set up banners for the Annual Fremont Festival of the Arts who then joined another lively group at the home of Audrey and Mike Kearns for a Fire Pit Friday to do what Niles Rotary does so well….fellowship!

A few of us headed down south with Dirk Lorenz to Mission Springs Camp RYLA and broke him into his role as Youth Service Director. What an amazing experience to see the energy and enthusiasm of these young future leaders. The 6 students that our club sponsored were beaming when they greeted us and thanked us for the life changing experience. They came to the camp not sure of what to expect and were going home, ready to share what they learned and lead their Interact clubs in fundraising for community and international projects. I went home excited and wishing that we could sponsor as many young people as possible next year for this unique experience of Camp RYLA. We had an exceptional program presented by Lynnea Shuck sharing her passion for the Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge, where at age 13 she created the Junior Refuge Ranger Program and for the past 5 years has shared her love for the wetlands and its inhabitants with young and old alike. Although Lynnea will be going off to college, she promised she would arrange to take us on a tour during one of her visits home. Joshua Burroughs, a member of the San Jose Rotary Club and a Director for the Wheelchair Foundation shared stories, photos and a video of his several trips giving the gift of mobility to people around the globe through Rotary. At our board meeting the board put out the number 50 for how many wheelchairs we would like the club to commit to the District Governor’s project of sending a container of wheelchairs (230 WC) to a predetermined city in Mexico. On Track With President Lisa (continued) International Director Audrey Kearns stepped up to take charge of this project. Our club assembly was full of goals and ideas to prepare us for another great Rotary year. PP Steve has a year full of social activities for our members to put on their calendars and enjoy. President-Elect Angus is already planning to get the Reverse Raffle committee together to plan an another successful evening in 2016 so that we can raise more money to gift grants to some of the many deserving non-profit groups in our local community. Angus will also be planning a Korean BBQ dinner to get the ball rolling in planning a trip to Seoul Korea for the 2016 RI Convention. International Director Audrey has been on board to finish up the work that Past Int’l Director Manuel started in Guatemala and Kenya; she is also looking at other possible projects in India and China, plus any other projects that club members might be interested in doing….just bring them to her to investigate. Along with our own club international projects, Audrey and Almos have been hard at work with other Area 3 members to plan the World Community Service Committee (WCSC) event (Be a Gift to the World) on October 4. Please see Audrey to purchase tickets if you haven’t already done so. Niles Rotarians love getting their hands dirty, so Community Service Director Terri has more work for us to do at Blacow Elementary school on September 19th, and we will help the Candlelighters set up the Ghost House at the Fremont Hub on September 26. Vocation Director Adam will continue to strengthen our ties with the Chamber of Commerce and is planning our annual mixer. He is also working on creating a mentoring program to work with Rotaract and our fellow Rotarians that would like to participate. Youth Service Director Dirk gave an enthusiastic account of his first time to Camp RYLA encouraging all Rotarians to go at least once if they have never been. Dirk will work hard to close the gap between our club and our Interactors and Rotaractors. Unfortunately we ran out of time for the rest of our program, so stay tuned for Part II of our Club Assembly featuring Club Admin Director John Dutra, Membership Chair Rick Hood, Foundation Chair Ray Pedersen, and Program Chair Scott Chambers. Our last meeting of the month was a visit by our District Governor Susan Valenta. DG Valenta spoke of her role as District Governor and proudly reported on the many accomplishments of our club. It was wonderful to see so many of our club members who have given and or pledged to give a Double Sustainer this year and receive a DS pin from from our Governor. If you were not able to make it to the meeting and would like to make a pledge for a DS and receive a DS pin, it’s not too late, just see Foundation Chair Ray Pedersen. We were also able to report to DG Valenta that In the 2 weeks since announcing the Wheelchair drive, Niles Rotarians have already committed 44 wheelchairs! Great work Audrey and thank you fellow Niles Rotarians for doing what you do best….stepping up. With 2 months under my belt at the podium, I still get very nervous running a meeting and have an occasional hot flash (thank you Ray for the fan to get me through those moments!) but when I look out at all of the smiling faces in the audience, it is very encouraging and I can’t help but be proud and honored to lead our club! Until next month…. President Lisa

The Friendliest Rotarian, aka Chief Craig Steckler, the team members of Lisa’s Java Jivers, as well as those that sponsored a new member during PP Steve’s hugely successful “Building Our Rotary” membership drive were treated to an evening great food, wine and fellowship. If you were not included in the above guest list, rumor is you will have another chance to participate in this type of soire next year….stay tuned for more details in the coming month!”

This is the longest the country has ever gone without a case of polio, and it’s a critical step on the path toward a polio-free Africa. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa in one year —three-quarters of all cases in the world. August 11 will mark an even greater milestone: one year since the last case of polio in Africa. For Africa to be certified polio-free by the World Health Organization, it must go two more years without a case of polio. To do this, all children in Nigeria must continue to receive the polio vaccine, including those in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.

ROTARY GLOBAL REWARDS Breaking news - just in time for President Lisa’s year, which may feature specials, discounts, and more … Here is a special program from Rotary International: Rotary’s new member benefits program gives Rotary members access to discounts on a variety of products and services selected with their interests in mind.

DISCOUNTS & SPECIAL OFFERS When Rotary Global Rewards launches in July, the program will include discounts on car rentals, hotels, dining, and entertainment. More products and services from companies around the world will be added throughout the year. Check back often to see what’s new in Rotary Global Rewards. HOW IT WORKS Anyone can view the offers and discounts on Rotary Global Rewards. But only Rotary club members who are signed in to their My Rotary accounts can redeem them. You can access and redeem rewards from your computer, smartphone, or tablet. Create a My Rotary account now so you’re ready to take advantage of the new member benefits program when it’s available. If you need help creating an account, see the How to Create a My Rotary Account quick guide (PDF) on the RI website.
