What I can tell you is of the relationships that were formed 35 years ago and the friendships that remain today. I have quoted time and again Past President Chuck who accurately states that there is nothing quite like “the energy in the room” when we all come together at a Niles Rotary meeting or fellowship event. (Personal note...if you have never stood back at a Niles rotary event and looked at the expression on any Rotarian’s face during that event, do so as you can see them Blooming in the experience of being with fellow Rotarians and absorbing that energy in the room). FROM PRESIDENT DIRK - Mentoring our “membership” As I prepared to speak at the mentoring meeting in September, I reflected on what we are working to accomplish with that program. Obviously, we desire to improve retention of the new member or protégée, and integrate them into the club, moving them from red badge to blue quickly. We also want to support the protégée in the initial years of membership helping them find their passion in Rotary. To accomplish this we have a support system that is administered via our Membership Development Committee. This said .... one could say that we are working to make our new members Bloom in their Niles Rotary experience! Would you not agree that one of the hallmarks of any Rotary experience is getting to know the club’s members? The relationships formed over time last a lifetime. I can’t help but to think back on my Rotary experience with another club in the 1980s. I am hard pressed to tell you the details of any one of the projects we did back then, although there were many. FROM PRESIDENT DIRK (continued) With this being the case, why in the world should we as a club want to change the way we do Rotary? Well....in this time of Covid and at the suggestion of Rotary International President Holger Knaack, we need to focus on the opportunities of being flexible with regard to membership so that we can grow. To do so, we must “mentor our membership .... categories”. Just as we focus on moving the new member from red badge to blue, we as a club have to focus on moving the way we do Rotary from what it has been to what it needs to be to include a new generation of future Rotarians. To accomplish this, I am proposing two new membership categories:

• Niles Rotary Remote Membership (NRRM) • Niles Rotary eMembership (NREM)

As we move through the process of vetting the various requirements for both these new membership categories, please know that neither of these memberships is intended to detract from the benefits of our Traditional Niles Rotary Membership (TNRM) as both include components that incorporate some of the fellowship opportunities that create the “energy in the room” that we as Niles Rotarians value. What these memberships are meant to accomplish is to open opportunities for potential members to make Mankind their Business .... Blooming in Rotary’s motto of Service above Self. For if we as Niles Rotarians truly believe that our mission in the Rotary experience is about service, then why would we not consider creating new ways for people to serve? Both President Elect Audrey and I are passionate about growing our club in new ways and have been working closely on a multi-year vision that achieves these goals. Our challenge as a club over the next few years is to grow our club with the vision of service yet provide face to face opportunities to develop those Niles Rotary relationships that add so much to richness to the Rotary experience. Keep on Blooming in Niles Rotary, President Dirk

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS On July 28 Niles Rotary did Feed the Hungry! It’s a very different menu and process – on Tuesdays, 2 meals of sandwiches are bagged with lots of other food, and handed out in the Centerville Dining Room with appropriate spacing, etc. Rose Evernden-Andrade has sent out a list of Tuesdays when just a couple of Niles Rotarians are needed to help. Our next Feed the Hungry for Niles Rotary involving a number of our volunteers is on October 27 (for our Oct. 29 – 5th Thursday commitment).

Michelle Burgess, a member of the Niles Fremont Inner Wheel Club, has a seat representing Inner Wheel at the United Nations. Michelle is the daughter of Patricia Picard, and is the granddaughter of Eleanor Chesterman [see note below about Eleanor] (Eleanor’s late husband, Charlie Chesterman, was a long time member of Fremont Rotary). Following is an article on Inner Wheel and the UN from their international newsletter. Important role in the United Nations Inner Wheel works to change and improve the situation of women in many ways, all over the world. Our members actively participate in local women’s projects, which often have an international connection. Many countries also have joint national/international projects. But Inner Wheel also plays an important role at the highest international level - the United Nations. Our voice is heard in several UN agencies. As an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) we are a consultative member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the UNICEF Children’s Fund. We have six Inner Wheel members representing us at meetings at the UN offices in New York, Vienna, and Geneva. Consultative status means that we have no voting rights at the meetings. On the other hand, we can make our voices heard through various statements from the NGO committees. The representatives follow and assist the work sessions of the commissions regarding important themes as: Human Rights, Rights of the Child, conditions of Woman, the Family, the Elderly and Drugs. Within Inner Wheel our UN representatives report to the Vice President who in turn reports to the IIW Board. It is not without pride that one can ascertain how important our IW members are doing at the highest international level. We are a female network that really matters. Worldwide. Remembering Eleanor Chesterman who passed away on September 24. She had been a past president of the Niles Fremont Inner Wheel club and the District Chair of Inner Wheel. She is pictured below with her daughter Patricia Picard. Patricia herself is the chairman of the Inner Wheel USA Foundation

SOME NOTES ON NILES ROTARY MEETINGS VIA ZOOM

These notes are taken from an article that President Bruce did for the April Pinion:

1. Our weekly club meetings are being held via Zoom. If you have not yet used Zoom, you can install Zoom at: https://zoom.us/download

2. The link to the meeting is the same every week, so you can save one message with the link information. President Dirk re-sends the link each week.

3. Attendance at the virtual meetings is voluntary. You do not have to attend and will not be penalized if you

don't. But knowing Niles Rotarians, President Dirk is sure you will want to attend. This crowd is too much fun to avoid!

4. Depending on how long the stay at home environment lasts, Zoom also will enable us to continue having committee meetings, and we’ll even use it for social interactions like Fellowship Friday. Other suggestions are welcome.

5. With our diverse membership, we have many members who, due to their own age or medical condition, or that of family members, need to be extra vigilant about outside interactions and exposures. We also have members for whom the risk associated with Essential Functions is less of a concern. Our We Care Chair, Margo Hood, will assemble a list of Niles Rotarians willing to volunteer to help out those members who need assistance, which will be published and made available to the entire membership, all of whom can feel free to contact anyone on the list to ask for assistance. The list will identify where each of the volunteers lives, so that anyone in need can contact someone in their vicinity. Requests will be held in strict confidence. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ON THE VOLUNTEER LIST, PLEASE CONTACT MARGO AND LET HER KNOW!!!

From President Bruce in March 2020: I am aware that many of you keep in contact and offer assistance on your own. These measures are not intended to interfere with that, so keep on doing what you're doing. And, if you have any ideas of your own that you think might help the club maintain continuity and collegiality, by all means let me or any other member of our board, or any of our service chairs, know. Together, we're going to weather this storm and come out even stronger than ever!
