From President Angus

It is with some trepidation that I sit down to write my first President's Column for the Pinion. When I think of all the presidents who have come before me, I am, I have to confess, a little intimidated. And most immediately, I am realizing what high heels I have to fill after Past President Lisa's year at the podium. Thank you

PP Lisa for a wonderful year leading Niles Rotary. Your focus on membership growth grew our club by 14 new members and your commitment to the Rotary Foundation ensured that we exceeded our goal in Foundation giving. But, most of all, your warmth and charm each week expressed the enthusiasm you have for Rotary and the love you have for all the members of Niles. I would also like to thank the outgoing board members for their service to the club. John Dutra, you held down the club service duties with aplomb. Terri Landon, you kept us busy with community service projects far and wide. And Past President Steve, you made sure that our social calendars were full of engagements. To the incoming board members -- Paul Andrus and Sandy Stabile -- thank you for stepping up and taking leadership of community service and club service, respectively. Past President Lisa, you are a natural for Social Chair, so we are expecting a eventful 12 months of socializing. And at the back table, I would like to thank Steven Springer for serving ably as Sergeant-at-arms for the last year. Dana Jones and Steven have been Co-Sergeants for the past six months, and now Dana will assume those duties herself. Thank you, Dana, for taking up the reins in that role. (continued on page 2)

From President Angus (continued) When I look back at my year as president-elect, I am first of all astonished at how fast the 12 months passed and second of all thrilled by all that I have learned about the Rotary organization. My journey to Seoul, Korea for the Rotary International Convention was undoubtedly the highlight of my president-elect year. Being in the same vast room with 25,000 other Rotarians from all over the world was truly awe-inspiring. And hearing about the global impact of Rotary made me proud to be an ever-so-small part of the organization. With then-President Lisa, I met a Rotarian from Kathmandu who offered to host us if we ever visited his home town. Simon Cho (who, it turns out, is descended from Korean royalty) set us up for a Korean banquet and a tour of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. He even talked our Korean tour guide into singing a traditional Korean love song. Daren Young answered that by leading us in a rendition of Smile for the baffled and disbelieving Rotarians on our tour bus. It was a trip never to be forgotten. In the year ahead, I hope to lead us all in a year of Rotary exploration, opening all our eyes to what Rotary accomplishes around the world and in our own region. It is a great honor to be your president this year. My door and inbox are always open; if you have any requests for the year, please feel free to get in touch. Yours in Rotary, President Angus

DEMOTION OF PRESIDENT LISA June 25, 2016 at the home of Daren & Sandra Young

Las Vegas bling was the party theme, with decorations and theme provided by Splurge (Ric Serianni). Excellent food, entertainment, and fellowship was enjoyed by the 100 or so guests at the party. Special guest Elvis entertained, as did a special representative of Rotary International who provided the Lisa “roast” for the evening.

DEMOTION OF PRESIDENT LISA (continued) * So, the demotion was wonderful, but where was President-Elect Angus, to whom would be passed along the President’s pin, congratulations, etc.?? In the photo above, there is a “flat Angus,” who “stood in” for the ceremony, which was made by Almos Adorjan. Dirk Lorenz has provided some photos and suggestions as the whereabouts of Angus that evening, and others used the opportunity to dress up flat Angus.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY Feed the Hungry – June 30 – Centerville Free Dining Room

Lots of Niles Rotarians showed up on June 30 for our Feed the Hungry turn at the Centerville Free Dining Room; the group included several new members, plus Rotarians from other clubs who regularly help out (Carol Smith from the Bakersfield Twilight Club stood in at the serving counter, in an excellent fashion, for Rose Evernden-Andrade who was off to Camp RYLA, and Nancie Allen from Newark Rotary served salad, as she usually does). Chuck Canada chaired the service event for Rose – Thank You Chuck for job well done! Others not pictured include Steve Cho, and Steve Barnett who counts people at the door. Niles Rotary has been providing the meal at the Centerville Dining Room, whenever there is a 5th Thursday of the month, since 1988 when the program began – 28 years ago!!

NILES ROTARY HISTORY Niles Rotary is in the process of gathering and inventorying our historical information, especially the information for the past 28+ years, for the third 25 year history of the club. Ameena Saeed has begun the project to write up the club history since 1987, and is beginning to interview the post-1987 presidents. In the process of looking at and gathering our information, we have seen old Pinions and other historical documents, which is great fun and quite enlightening. Among other items of interest was the observation that there were some 20+ committees of various kinds in the 1960’s and 1970’s. From time to time, there may be historical tidbits from these documents. From the July 1991 Pinion - The beginning of our We Care program in 1991-1992: “At our June 13 meeting, 5170 District Governor Nominee Stan Allen gave an excellent presentation on the “We Care” program – a program which takes much of what we do in Rotary and gives it a new focus. The basis of the program is that Rotarians need and want to be treated well, whether in their own club or as they visit other clubs. Stan described the best and worst situations of how visiting Rotarians can be treated – do we greet and talk with visiting Rotarians, or ignore them? How do we treat new members – do we include them on committees or assignments right away, or ignore them? What about members who have missed several meetings or are ill? Do we know right away they are in the hospital and visit or send

cards to them? The “We Care” program is a way for a club to act as a caring club for its members and visitors. Fortunately, the Niles Rotary Club can recognize this program from a position of strength, in that we already do well in many aspects of the program. Ken Rankin will be our 1991-1992 “We Care” chairman, and is organizing the committees to work with the program.” Also of interest, from the January 1992 Pinion – about the Rotocare Clinic: “The Fremont Sunrise Club is leading the work involved to establish and continue a free health clinic for the homeless in the Fremont area. The Rotocare Clinic model was begun by the Campbell rotary Club and is well established now in Santa Clara County. Rotocare has been so successful and is so desperately needed that a similar project is beginning here. Dave Hillstrom of the Fremont Sunrise Club is the committee chairman, and Dick Warren is now on the steering committee. The Health Clinic begins January 18. While the clinic will exist on volunteer help, funds are still needed for supplies, etc. Fundraising includes the sale of a cookbook for $10 – Sandi P. has a supply of the cookbooks. Our help will be needed from time to time to help with the clinic.”
