Bak, Université de Lorraine A A s we wind down the year and look to welcome in 2016, IDEA will be entering into an important transi- tion year. By March and then by June, it will have to submit to the Université de Lorraine its bilan of the past five years and its projet for the next five. These past years have been very fruitful in terms of scholarship and scien- tific activities, and IDEA members should be proud about how far the center has come since it was first founded ten years ago. Each year, IDEA hosts or spon- sors about two or three international con- ferences, and on average its members publish between three and four mono- graphs or edited collections. Conference papers and published articles are regu- larly in the double digits. IDEA has also been an active partner within the Pôle TELL, regularly apply- ing for publication sub- ventions, research pro- ject grants and confer- ence support funds. This past year, IDEA increased its annual budget by 50 percent with funds originat- ing from the Université de Lorraine, from the Lorraine Région and from other uni- versities. This extra funding allowed sev- eral members to travel more this past year to deliver papers or conduct research. Some of those funds went to organizing IDEA’s Seminar Series these past few months, as well as a conference host by the Maison Française in Oxford. This past November, Laura Davidel, a second- year PhD student, was selected among the school’s PhD students to accompa- ny the directrice to China to participate in a bilateral research project on “Aging.” Heading into 2016 will require IDEA and its members to begin defining its future five-year contract. In early March, the director must send to the Université de Lorraine its reseach summary of the past five years, and by June the future director will need to send a detailed report of IDEA’s future projects. The bilan will include executive summaries in French and in English, as well as SWOT analyses of IDEA’s research accomplishments, risks and opportunities. Individual assesse- ment reports will no longer be required of members this time, but members will need to inform the director of their personal bilans so that a collective pic- ture of IDEA’s achievements can be made known to the HCERES. As my tenure as director approaches its end, IDEA will need to elect its new director (as well as an directeur adjoint and Conseil), who will guide the research center through its next quinquennial contract beginning in January 2018. AA s we wind down the year and lookto welcome in 2016, IDEA will beentering into an important transi-

tion year. By March and then by June, itwill have to submit to the Université deLorraine its bilan of the past five yearsand its projet for the next five.

These past years have been veryfruitful in terms of scholarship and scien-tific activities, andIDEA membersshould be proudabout how far thecenter has comesince it was firstfounded ten yearsago. Each year,IDEA hosts or spon-sors about two or three international con-ferences, and on average its memberspublish between three and four mono-graphs or edited collections. Conferencepapers and published articles are regu-larly in the double digits.

IDEA has also been an activepartner within the PôleTELL, regularly apply-ing for publication sub-ventions, research pro-ject grants and confer-ence support funds.This past year, IDEAincreased its annualbudget by 50 percent with funds originat-ing from the Université de Lorraine, fromthe Lorraine Région and from other uni-versities. WW orking in partnership with various research cen-ters—Oxford Centre for Life-Writing (WolfsonCollege, Oxford University, UK), Medill School of

Journalism (Northwestern University, USA), ReSIC(Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium), and theExperimental Media Lab (Academy of Fine Arts Saar,Germany)—the research group I.D.E.A. (“Théories et pra-tiques de l’interdisciplinarité dans les études anglophones”)is announcing a call for papers for the conference “LiteraryJournalism and Latin American Wars.” The conference willbe held at Wolfson College, Oxford University, from 13–14June 2016. The keynote speaker will be Argentinean jour-nalist and scholar Roberto Herrscher Rovira (Universitat deBarcelona), whose books Los viajes del Penélope (2007)and Periodismo narrativo (2012) show the importance liter-ary journalism has in the practice and history of LatinAmerican letters.

When Gabriel García Márquez died in April 2014,the world of letters lost one its most talented novelists andinfluential journalists of the 20th century. “Gabo,” who wasequally known for his “magicalrealism” as for his support ofthe Castro regime in Cuba,witnessed and recorded thepolitical and social unrest thatis frequently associated withthe development of SouthAmerica. Like Márquez, manyLatin American authors resort-ed to literary journalism tocapture their countries’ civilwars, revolutions or pogroms.Jorge Ibargüengoitia wroteabout the Mexican Revol-ution of 1910 in Los Relámpagos de Agosto (1964) andlater about the Mexican War of Independence in Los pasosde López (1981). In Operación Masacre, Rodolfo JorgeWalsh described the events following the RevoluciónLibertadora in Argentina in 1955. Biografía de un cimarrónby the Cuban author Miguel Barnet tells of the story of aCuban ex-slave of African descent that fought during theCuban War of Independence (1895–98). The book, pub-lished seven years after the Cuban Revolution ended in1966, is considered a watershed in the development ofLatin American literary journalism.

CC ontemporary Textual Aestheticsontemporary Textual Aesthetics exam-ines various contemporary authorial enterpris-es and editorial initiatives which invite us to

carefully consider ways in which texts are being fash-ioned. Authors and editors give birth to original types oftexts and books: innovative, unconventional or experi-mental novels, collaborative illustrated books, collec-tive artist’s books, hybrid or multimodal artefacts, andperformative, multimedia book-objects. The essays inthis volume explore a variety of texts as well as theirfrontiers and thresholds, and propose redefinitions ofthe book beyond the boundaries of the traditional codexformat and its inherent material ink-and-paper limitsand constraints. They offer a variety of examples ofcontemporary textual practices, and ground-breaking,thought-provoking book projects from many culturalperspectives and artistic backgrounds: France,Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Great Britain andthe United States of America.

Working outward from the path traced byHubert Nyssen in Du texte au livre, les avatars du sens,the essays collected in this volume examine theprocess by which texts are embodied in forms that givethem the appearance of completion and finality. Thepassage from fluid, provisional textual states to theapparent solidity of the published book is explored inthe light of recent developments in textual scholarship.By engaging with archival records, with questions spe-cific to periodical and serial publications and author-publisher interactions, the contributors to this volumecall into question certain widely held assumptionsabout the processes through which texts becomebooks. They present the relation between text and bookas ultimately less straightforward than the one pro-posed by Nyssen. Instead, they seek to transcend thelinear progress from text to book, establishing moredynamic connections between the multiple materialstates in which a given work or document has exitedover the course of its history. §

IDEA will begin its newfive-year contract as of January2018. As such, it is currentlypreparing its bilan and projetdossiers for the HCERES,which will be visiting the centersometime in December 2016 orJanuary 2017 to evaluate it.

Members are hard atwork preparing the bilan of theirrecent projects, as well asorganizing their projects for thenext quinquennial contract.

IDEA also sends itscongratulations to MonicaLatham, who successfullydefened her HDR this pastNovember in Montpellier.Bravo, Monica.

In other news, IDEA’swebsite continues to draw anaverage of 60 hits per day, withmany days reaching as high as120 hits, mostly for its confer-ence sites or individual mem-bers’ pages. Since its inaugura-tion five years ago, around130,000 internauts from 143different countries have visitedthe website, with the most hitscoming from France, the USand the UK.

Finally, IDEA celebrat-ed its 10th birthday this pastSeptember. Céline Sabironmarked the occasion by pre-senting members with a “birth-day” cake during IDEA’s lastAssemblée Générale in earlyOctober. §§

Even though literary journalismon all three continents had traditionsthat predate the 1960s, it is safe tosay that the genre came of age at thistime, and Latin America’s interactionswith Europe and the United Statesplayed an important role in the mak-ing of its own brand of literary journal-ism, by whatever name it wascalled—periodismo narrativo, jornalis-mo literário or periodismo literario.The journalistic influences fromEurope and the United States raisean incalculable number of questionsregarding the essence of LatinAmerican literary journalism to whichthis conference hopes to provideanswers. Potential questions on thetransformation of the genre in LatinAmerica could include:

• What effect did foreign literaryjournalists have on the local formwhen they began writing about LatinAmerica? Did Latin literary journalistsadopt more of an American or aEuropean sensibility when writingabout their countries’ social and polit-ical issues.

• When Germans came to Brazil inthe 19th century, some of them decid-ed to write in German. Did it changethe nature of literary journalism in thiscountry and, if so, how?

• What effect did moving to theUnited States have on writers whowere born in Latin America, such asAlma Guillermoprieto, who writes forthe American and the British pressand covered the El Mozote mas-sacre?

• When Cuba began rejecting Euro-American culture in the post-revolu-tion 60s, did its authors shun the influ-ence they had received abroad or didthey simply sublimate it?

The diversity of viewpointswill allow us to understand how liter-ary journalism has found its place inLatin America and contributed to thebuilding of a sense of nationalism,between democracy and authoritari-anism, between unity and fragmenta-tion. English will be the conference’sprincipal language, but papers canalso be presented in Spanish,Portuguese and French. §§

Latin American literary journalismis thus rarely separated from LatinAmerican politics throughout the 19th and20th centuries. Dictatorships—the mostnotorious being perhaps Chile’sPinochet—civil wars and colonial wars allinspired the work of literary journalistswho wrote knowing that reprisals wouldinevitably follow the publication of theirwork. The poet Heberto Padilla wasimprisoned in 1971, and Rodolfo Walshwas assassinated by an Argentinean mili-tia in 1977. Faced with such realities,Latin American authors had to be decep-tive to get their stories published andread. Potential questions on the history ofthe genre in Latin America that could beaddressed include:

• Is Latin American literary journalismessentially a militant journalism?

• How did Latin American literary jour-nalists avoid censorship?

• What differences can be noticedbetween works written during dictator-ships or in colonial times and those pro-duced later?

• Latin American authors were forcedto invent specific genres (crónica, crônica,testimonio) that used literary techniqueswhich allowed them to criticize authoritar-ian governments without putting their livesin danger. How subjective could theauthors be when writing their stories?What impact did their stories have on thenation and its people?

• How much distance did literary jour-nalists—Latin American or otherwise—putbetween themselves and the object oftheir writing?

• Does an authorial voice during timesof repression or a preponderant politicalagenda within a text limit its universalityand keep it from even being considered aclassic?

Latin American literary journalismwas unavoidably influenced by an import-ed/exported European reportage tradition,as well as by America’s “New Journalism”of the 1960s and 70s. While Tom Wolfe,Hunter S. Thompson and Joan Didionwere exploring the consequences coun-terculture had on an imploding America(with Didion later turning to Latin Americain Salvador), Latin American authors werestill largely trying to find a voice to expressthe struggles experienced by their peo-

LL e colloque « Micro-/Macro- : quels enjeux en linguis-tique anglaise ? » a eu lieu les 9–10 octobre 2015 àl’Université de Lorraine, sur le site de Metz. L’objectif

du colloque était de susciter un dialogue entre des spécial-istes de l’analyse micro-linguistique avec des spécialistesd’une analyse plus contextualisée et plus large, une macro-linguistique. Le colloque a réuni des chercheurs en linguis-tique de divers horizons (France, Allemagne, Autriche etGrande-Bretagne).

Le colloque a débuté par une présentation com-mune réalisée par trois des organisatrices du colloque :« Corpus didactique scientifique : quels enjeux à l’interfacemicro-macro ? ». Héloïse Lechevallier-Parent a renducompte de la nécessité d’articuler des niveaux d’analysedisparates par l’examen du fonctionnement du pronom de2ème personne you. Isabelle Gaudy-Campbell a abordé ladimension informationnelle du propos, en analysant les con-structions pseudo-clivées et de leur rôle focalisant, remet-tant ainsi en cause une approche strictement micro-syntax-ique du phénomène. Vasilica Le Floch a étudié la manièredont la cohésion discursive (en tant que macro-structura-tion) détermine les unités de la structure sémantique, prag-matique et argumentative. Les participants ont présenté desapproches d’analyse variées, tout en mettant en relation lesdeux niveaux d’analyse, micro- et macro-, à l’intérieur de laphrase, ainsi qu’aux frontières de celle-ci, au niveau de lastructuration du discours. Le conférencier invité, GuntherKaltenböck (Université de Vienne), a proposé une approche

originale des différents niveaux d’analyse linguistique, endistinguant deux grammaires : Sentence Grammar–Thetical Grammar.

La table ronde fut l’occasion de mettre en perspec-tive les différentes approches des phénomènes langagiersexposées pendant le colloque, de questionner les niveauxde grammaticalisation, ainsi que de s’interroger à nou-veau, de façon plus générale, sur les relations entre fonc-tion grammaticale, position et sémantisme des marqueurs.

Les communications présentées lors du colloque« Micro-/macro- : quels enjeux en linguistique anglaise ? »seront publiées dans Modèles Linguistiques (tomeXXXVII, vol. 74) en 2016. Le colloque a été organisé parIDEA (projet oralité : A. Dahak, I. Gaudy-Campbell, H.Lechevallier-Parent, V. Le Floch), avec le soutien deATILF (Analyse et Traitement Informatique de la LangueFrançaise). §§

LL ors de la réunion des doctorants du 9 novembre2015, Anita Jorge,doctorante en deux-

ième année, a présenté l’a-vancée de ses travaux dethèse : « ‘The Sounds of aCountry at War’ : la créationd’une identité sonore britan-nique et son appropriationau cinéma et dans les docu-mentaires radiophoniquespendant la Seconde Guerremondiale ».

Anita a tout d’abordexpliqué que les sons de la guerre faisaient partie inté-grante de la vie de la nation, tel un « occupant invisi-ble », et qu’ils apparaissaient comme un élément naturelancré dans le paysage sonore national.

A travers la présence de ces sons de la guerreest apparue une nouvelle culture de l’ « auralité »,retranscrite au cinéma, à la radio. En effet la radioreprésentait « une réunion auditive » pour lesBritanniques dont l’univers sonore était en permanenceenvahi par les ondes radiophoniques. Quant au cinéma,il a servi de prisme à travers lequel pouvaient êtrevéhiculés les sons de la guerre.

Toute cette interrelation entre le paysagesonore et les individus a amené les Britanniques à serassembler face à l’adversité. Ces sonorités, utilisées àdes fins patriotiques, voire propagandistes, ont permisde renforcer le lien social etl’attachement à la nation.

L’exposé d’AnitaJorge s’est terminé par desquestions posées par lesauditeurs et des points deréflexions proposés parJohn Bak pour aider lesdoctorants dans leurs pro-jets professionnels (par.ex., les différences entreun Ph.D. et une thèse, ouun Assistant Professor,un Reader ou un SeniorLecturer et un Maître deConférence ou un Profes-seur). §

AA s part of the “Literary Journalism and War” project(ReportAGES), two Spanish scholars came toNancy on 24 November 2015 to talk about literary

journalism with respect to the Spanish Civil War. Dr. Xavier Pla, from the University of Girona

(Catalonia), talked about the life and work of Josep Pla(1897–1981), whom he considers to be the most emblem-atic figure of Spanish literary journalism of the 20th cen-tury. Although Spain remained neutral during WW I, itsjournalists covered the conflict around Europe and devel-opped literary journalism in an effort to modernize theapproach to their occupation. Josep Pla reported fromParis, Moscow or Berlin in the 1920s, and he had alreadymade a reputation for himself before the Civil War throughthe publication of his travel accounts in Coses Vistes(Things Seen) in 1925. He was very attached to theregional particularities of Catalonia and wrote most of hisworks in Catalan, opting for Spanish only during Franco’sban on regional languages. Pla had to flee to France forthe duration of the Civil War because of his closeness tothe conservative Catalanist party and only returned in1939. He collaborated for a time with Francoist newspa-pers—a support for which he was violently criticised andeven boycotted after thedeath of Franco—but hedistanced himself from poli-tics after 1940. Travelsabroad were restricted soPla turned to celebratinglocalness. His Viaje enAutobús (1942) and Viaje aPie (1949) (Travels by busand Travels on foot) thusrecorded his observation ofthe Mediterranean land-scapes and traditionalways of life of Spain in gen-eral and Catalonia in partic-ular, including the miserybrought about by Franco’sdictatorship. Writing onlynonfiction based on what he was seeing, Josep Pla gavea journalistic basis to his work, and some included auto-

biographical elementsin their narrative style.

Dr. MargaritaNavarro Pérez, fromthe Catholic Univer-sity of Murcia, thenpresented the firstobservations drawnfrom her project onfirst-hand eyewitnessaccounts and second-hand oral recollec-tions of the SpanishCivil War. Focusing onanecdotes told or passedon by both Nationalists andRepublicans, she proposed to show how the elements thatare stressed, omitted or transformed contributed to thecreation of collective memories on the people and envi-ronment of the Spanish Civil War.

She illustrated her argument with an exampledrawn from a 2013 Spanish documentary, Las Maestrasde la República (The Schoolmistresses of the Republic) toshow how the testimonies she collected conflicted with thevision of education presented in the program. In anattempt to justify the Civil War, people interviewed fromboth sides called each other “brutes” and perceived them-selves as fighting for the right cause. A common criticismabout Franco’s regime following the conflict was that it wasunfair. A testimony thus mentioned people put in prisonsimply for being wealthy or from a noble family; in another,a former Republican complained about the priviledged sta-tus granted to Francoists wounded in comparison with theRepublicans. Using the example of churches—some keptalmost intact and other robbed of their valuables and seton fire—and a line from Guillermo Del Toro's 2006 filmPan’s Labyrinth, Margarita Navarro Pérez showed thatboth sides would unashamedly posed as avengers andaccused each other of stealing, destroying and killing if thiscould serve their own interest. Both talks were complementary to some extent,with Xavier Pla focusing on the Civil War personal and pro-fessional experience of one famous individual, andMargarita Navarro Pérez drawing attention to the variedevents in the everyday lives of ordinary people. Bothspeakers managed to bring a human dimension to thedehumanized and dehumanizing context of wars throughthe importance of recording—orally or in writing, informal-ly or through literary journalism—events and perceptionsof events for later generations to remember. §§

The conference programwas very rich with well-establishedart historians like Prof. JonathanConlin (Southampton University,author of Tales of Two Cities: Paris-London and the Birth of the ModernCity, 2013, among others) andrenowned plenary speakers, suchas Diana Cooper-Richet andMichel Rapoport, both fromVersailles–St Quentin University(authors of L’Entente cordiale Centans de relations culturelles franco-britanniques (1904-2004), eds.Diana Cooper-Richet and MichelRapoport, Paris, Créaphis, 2006,and Nos meilleurs ennemis. The conference dealt withthe question of the cultural transferbetween London and Paris duringthe second half of the 19th centu-ry. The two capital cities—whichare privileged lenses throughwhich to assess the progression ofthe modern metropolis—haveoften been the focus of studies,from cultural history to great liter-ary changes, most of which havebeen examined from a global per-spective. And yet, it is only recent-ly that the two cities have beensurveyed comparatively: the aimof the conference was thus to con-centrate exclusively on the culturalexchanges between the two capi-tals and to consider what thatcross-Channel circulation, thatback-and-forth flux has brought to

one or/and the other, from a historical,aesthetic, artistic, and literary perspec-tives as well as from the context oftranslation practices. There is a bookproject on the conference topic.
