Ugandan Adventure In February, 2017, I was privileged to attend the Jinja International Youth Conference in Uganda, where I had the opportunity to discuss philosophy and politics with my peers. Debates with the Ugandans were lively and revealed the startling differences between our cultures. The Ugandans I spoke to were surprised to hear that many Britons are embarrassed by their colonial past. “You have done much good for us”, explained one, “..do not feel ashamed.” Few supported President Museveni’s 30-year premiership in Uganda. Most accused him of corruption and vote-rigging. For example, the Ugandan government has recently launched an initiative to get young people to help out at neighbouring polling stations. In a country

without postal ballots this policy prevents young people from voting. After the conference I was able to visit Lake Victoria. Whilst travelling I was struck by the terrible poverty of many Ugandans. News from the Parishes A complete list of church services, including those at Barford, Wasperton

and Sherbourne, is displayed on the notice board in your church.

Dear Friends,

It seems amazing that I’m already writing a letter for April! The year seems to be rushing by. April is a lovely month, partly due to the spring weather and the new growth of plants and trees, but also because it usually, as this year, contains the wonderful festival of Easter. This year it is Sunday, 16 April. It is a great day in itself, but even more special if you have been marking the six weeks of Lent in a significant way and can celebrate Easter by enjoying something you have voluntarily given up since Ash Wednesday.

For me, though, Easter has always been made more special by marking the other big events that led up to it in what Christians call Holy Week. They are: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. Each of them has its own special character and mood, reflecting the rapidly shifting moods of the actual events. They begin with the celebratory entry of Jesus into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), which we shall mark with processions in

Charlecote Spring Fundraising Supper - with Bridge Come along and play friendly Chicago Bridge, with a delicious home-cooked supper provided, on the evening of Friday, 28 April at Little Hill Farm. Pairs or foursomes welcome. For further details and to book contact Char Hutsby on 01789 840261, e-mail: [email protected] Proceeds to St Leonard’s Church, Charlecote. SL

Barford and Hampton Lucy, starting at Memorial Hall and the Village Hall respectively, just before 9.30am. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper and the disciples going to Gethsemane. We shall mark that at both Wasperton and Hampton Lucy Churches at 7.30pm. On Good Friday, we’ll remember the dark events of that day in a dramatic and interactive way at Hampton Lucy’s Hot Cross Bun Service, and in a more reflective manner at services in the afternoon and evening. (See the Church Services page for details.)

If you make the ‘journey’ by getting to at least one service on each of the first three days, my experience is that it really makes Easter Day more special. Why not give it a try?

In addition, the older children from Barford School will be presenting the whole story dramatically in Barford Church on Tuesday and Wednesday, 4 and 5 April, just after 9 am. Last year they were fantastic. Everyone will be welcome.

Coventry Cathedral Chapel of Unity The contract to repair The Chapel of Unity should be completed by January, 2018. The whole chapel will be enclosed with scaffolding which will then be gradually removed in phases. The old electrical wiring in the organ blower has now been replaced and a new fuse board installed. Loxley Church Concert - April The first concert in our 2017 series will be at St Nicholas’ Church, Loxley, on Sunday, 23 April, 3.00pm to 4.00pm. It will feature two brilliant young violinists, Elys Healey and Sara Chapman, from King’s School, Warwick, plus the very welcome return of soprano Octavia Lewis who so entranced the audience with her wonderful singing last year. They will be accompanied on piano by Matthew Smallwood and Helen Gillespie with a programme of beautiful music - perfect for your entertainment and enjoyment on a Sunday afternoon. Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of the Loxley Church Fabric Fund. DW

Carers4Carers Carers4Carers will be meeting on Friday, 28 April, from 10.30 to 12 noon in Kineton Village Hall, for coffee, chat and the chance to question Debbie Anderson about legal matters. We can look after your loved one in our Companionship Group while you attend the meeting but please request this in advance. For more details, including help with transport, phone Gillian on 01926 640203/07947 893504. GG-S

The NADFAS Church Record The NADFAS Church Record, prepared by the Royal Leamington Spa DFAS group for St Leonard’s, Charlecote, was presented on Sunday, 12 February. A NADFAS kneeler, worked by one of the recorders, was also given to the church. After the service, everyone was treated to a glass of Cava and tasty cheesy nibbles, provided by the ladies from the congregation. SL

Wellesbourne & District Lions Club I can’t believe we’re approaching Easter already and, on behalf of all of the Lions, I would like to wish everyone a “Happy Easter”. We are once again raffling our giant Easter Eggs in local shops, pubs, restaurants and businesses. I’m sure you are likely to come across one, and if you do then please have a go. Even if you don’t win, remember that all the money raised will be donated to good local causes. A quick reminder that on 1 April, we will be holding our Senior Citizens Concert and Afternoon Tea at Kineton High School. All senior citizens in our area are invited to come along to this completely free event - including transport to and from home. Doors will be open from 12.30pm with entertainment, free prize bingo and a raffle. To book a place, please contact Lion Paul Gibson on 01789 841730. On 1 March, 45 ‘seniors’ were treated to a trip to the pantomime Beauty and the Beast at Stratford Arts House. I think it was enjoyed by all - “Oh no it wasn’t - oh yes it was”! Many thanks to the volunteer drivers, pictured here. This year’s raft race will be held on Sunday, 23 July. In 2016, for the first time in many years, three mechanical-class rafts entered the race, aiming to beat the four times class winner Simply the Best. They were unsuccessful so we’re inviting engineers to design and build a mechanically-powered raft to challenge the supremacy of Simply the Best. Paddle wheels or propellers are fine, chain-drives and bicycle parts often work well, but no engines or outboard motors! And don’t forget - the craft must be able to negotiate two large weirs. If you are up for the challenge, contact Lion Charles Williams on 07590 387204 for more information. AS

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI At the March meeting, Robert Lister gave a truly wonderful talk on the Life of an Actor and we were all sorry when it came to an end! Robert has understudied for many famous actors, and the works of Shakespeare

are especially dear to him. He has also performed in many radio programs such as the Archers. Next month is Hampton Lucy WI’s Birthday Party - which will be an open meeting when husbands, partners and friends will be very welcome. The speaker will be P. Cornwell with a talk entitled Mind your motoring manners, 1928 style. A buffet harking back to that era will be served. The meeting will be in Hampton Lucy Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. The WI section of the Hampton Lucy website has now been updated and features photographs of the past year’s events. MJW

Charlecote Park Easter weekend can be the busiest of the whole year and we’re doing everything we can to help things to run smoothly. The Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt will run from Thursday 13 to Tuesday 18 April, (for 6 days this year), but if you’re not visiting with children you’ll find it quieter outside those dates. There will be nature trails around the parkland throughout the Easter holiday fortnight and you can pick up an information leaflet on the way in. The longer opening hours will be from 10.00am to 6.00pm so you will be able to arrive early or after 3.00pm and still have plenty of time to do everything. If you’re able to walk or cycle to Charlecote that would help to reduce frustration when the car park is full, as it can be when we are very busy - you will enjoy your day more, our hard-working staff and volunteers will be better able to cope, and it will deter people from parking on the grass verges. A new opportunity - we’re welcoming well-behaved dogs on short leads, (not extendable ones), into parts of the parkland for the first time. There will be plenty of bins along the walk for well-behaved owners to clean up after their pets, and maps of the route will be available on the way in. There will be no access for dogs beyond the gatehouse for the present so dogs won’t be allowed into the house, formal gardens or Orangery. Lots more information on our website. MG

Lions’ Classic Challenge We are getting closer to our Classic Gathering on 4 June.

Don’t forget - if you have a classic vehicle which you would like to show off, get in touch via the Lions’ website or go to the Wellesbourne Lions Facebook page. To whet

your appetite, here is the second photograph and question. What is this truck - make, model and year and how many miles do you think it has covered? Collect your answers and bring them along to the Classic Gathering at the Wellesbourne Sports Field on 4 June for the chance of a free entry in Wellesbourne Lions’ Grand Centennial Raffle. We have many exciting prizes to tempt you in this, including dinner for two at a local hotel. The third and final quiz question will be featured in next month’s Grapevine AS

Scar Bank Bench Replaced For those who have missed the bench on Scar Bank after the stiff scramble up from the permissive path by the river, it has now been replaced by the Parish Council. Relax and enjoy the view once again! AJW

Curious about Bees? There will be an introductory course on bees and beekeeping organised by Shipston Beekeepers during the weekend of 22/23 April. Led by a qualified Master Beekeeper, you will gain an insight into the world of the honey bee with hands-on experience and instruction in the role of the beekeeper and keeping your own beehive. The course will explain the workings of a honey bee colony, the beekeeping year, essential equipment, harvesting your honey and wax, and how to get started with your own colony and hive. Protection suits will be provided. The course will take place in the Village Hall, Brailes, OX15 5AS, between 9:30am and 4.00pm on both days. The cost is £50 per person, couples £80, and includes a light lunch and refreshments. Visit the website www.sbka.org.uk/training/ for further details, and to register contact Margery

Ofsted Inspection - Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School and Nursery On Wednesday, 1 February 2017, an HMI Inspector made a short-inspection visit to the school. ‘This school continues to be good’….‘Good-quality teaching ensures that pupils in all classes make good progress from their respective starting points. Teachers and adults cater well for the needs of pupils with different abilities, including those who are the most and least able. Pupils enjoy and benefit from the wide range of activities offered, including learning to play musical instruments, participating in sports clubs, and carrying out individual roles and responsibilities. As a result, pupils develop their wider talents and become mature and well-rounded learners. Parents and pupils have very positive views of the school. Parent comments include, ‘A fantastic school where children are well cared for and taught excellent life-skills.’ Pupil comments include, ‘Everyone in school is really friendly.’ Pupils behave well and have positive attitudes to learning.’ The full report is available on the school website: www.hamptonlucyschool.org.uk SA

Charlecote Mill's Craft Experience Weekend Do you have an interest in traditional building crafts and skills and would like to try your hand at them? Well here's your chance! On Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 May, Karl the Miller and members of the William Morris Craft Fellowship Trust are hosting a fascinating weekend at Charlecote Mill to provide that opportunity. Try ‘wattle and daub’ mud walling, timber framing, stained glass work, and more. The activities will all take place in the unique atmosphere of Warwickshire’s last commercially operating traditional watermill - right here on your doorstep! The cost is just £60 for the weekend, or £40 per day including tuition and materials, with lunch and refreshments provided. For more information go to charlecotemill.co.uk or visit Charlecote Mill’s Facebook pages. All the proceeds will go to The William Morris Fellowship, an organisation which promotes and sponsors traditional crafts and skills. (Highly recommended by visitors to the event last year – Ed.) KG

The Clearing is coming to Compton Verney Something futuristic is taking shape in the historic grounds of Compton Verney. British artists Alex Hartley and Tom James have created The Clearing - a glimpse of post-apocalyptic existence with a hand-built geodesic dome to house the project. Introduced in 1960s America, these hi-tech, low-cost structures are simple to build using local materials and hand-tools. Twenty volunteers from across the country have helped with the building, including architects and park rangers, graphic designers and yurt builders. The finished dome has been occupied by volunteer caretakers since 18 March. They are totally off-grid with just a bed, a stove to cook on and an outdoor toilet, chopping wood, keeping chickens, repairing the dome, and keeping the vision alive. The dome will be

used to host a series of workshops, demonstrating skills that may be needed when sea levels rise, fossil fuels run out, the global economy shrinks and civilisation declines. From basics like building fires and digging toilets, through to making mead, constructing wind turbines and re-starting democracy - participants will learn about survival in a world afflicted by climate change. Is it a nightmare or an opportunity? Come along and see. The Clearing runs from March to December, 2017. Visit www.the-clearing.info (Wonder if they still have their mobiles?...Ed) TJ , AJW
