Concert at Hampton Lucy Church - The African Children’s Choir

Live in concert at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Hampton Lucy, 7.00 pm on Friday, 30 November. The African Children’s Choir stole the hearts of the nation during their uplifting performance of their number one recording of ‘Sing’

at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations with Gary Barlow. Now the latest choir is bringing a new concert experience

back to the UK! If you have ever seen The African Children’s Choir you will want to come again. If not, make sure you don’t miss it this time. This is not a church fundraiser but an evening raising money for educating children from Africa in

order to prepare them to take on important roles as adults back in their own countries. Tickets are £7 for adults; £4 for

children and £20 for a family. Call 01789 842008 or 01789 842251. Rev’d DJ

Commemoration of the Departed

On Sunday, 4 November, at services in both Barford and Hampton Lucy, there will be the opportunity to remember our loved ones who have died. These will be occasions where we can remember them before God and give thanks for them.

We always read a list of names of those whom people wish to have specially remembered. If you want us to remember a

particular person in that way, please e-mail Revd David Jessett [email protected] or write to The Rectory, Church Lane, Barford, CV35 8ES. Please PRINT names and say at which service you would like the names read out.

The services will be held at St Peter’s, Barford at 3.30 pm and St Peter ad Vincula, Hampton Lucy at 6.00 pm. Rev’d DJ

Dear Friends,

This month of course we mark 100 years since the official ending of World War 1. It will be observed in many

different ways and that is important because, with the passing

of time, we really need to make sure we don’t forget how dreadful war is.

When I was first ordained in the 1980s, it seems to me that

there was less emphasis on Remembrance Sunday. By then

it was sixty years since WW1 and going on for forty since WW2. Perhaps we had begun to forget. But after the

Falklands conflict, the Gulf Wars and our involvement in

Afghanistan, I have had a real sense of Remembrance Sunday becoming a very important national occasion again,

recalling not just those who died in the two great wars of

the 20th century but also the tragic loss of more young

people in smaller but more recent conflicts.

So, if we are to avoid war in the future we need to remember

the past and to do all we can to build and maintain peace.

Some of Jesus’ most striking sayings concern peace and

violence. Along with …love your neighbour as you love yourself .. he also said on at least one occasion …love your

enemy!

At another time he said … You have heard that it was said

to the people long ago, “You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.” But I tell you

that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be

subject to judgment...” Now these are strong sayings but perhaps they need to be if they are to motivate us to try to

prevent the conditions arising when conflict may break out.

Once it does, it can be very hard …to turn the other

cheek… to quote Jesus once more.

So, genuinely trying to see situations from the other

person’s point of view, working hard at managing our

anger when it arises, and not immediately responding to a

slap with a harder slap are all very important strategies to reduce conflict at an interpersonal level. We then need to

hope and pray that leaders and governments can do the

same on the global stage. David Jessett

November Concert At Loxley The final concert in the 2018 series will be at St. Nicholas' Church, Loxley on Sunday, 4 November at 3.00pm, and will

be given by Romany Pie, a folk group from Kenilworth who will be performing an anthology of songs, poems and readings to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. John, Dave and Matthew have been together

as a folk group for many decades and are joined by reader Chris Carpenter from Kenilworth's Talisman

Theatre. Featuring poems and letters from the trenches as well as more modern pieces, the anthology also offers folk

songs reflecting on all aspects of life on the front line. The show is suitable for all ages and will last for 50 minutes. Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. We do hope that you will be able

to join us on this very special occasion. DW

Wellesbourne & District Lions Club On Friday, 14 September, Wellesbourne Lions hosted one of our famous, or should I say infamous, Lion

Racing evenings at Barford Memorial Hall. A good crowd enjoyed a fun evening which included a hearty

lasagne supper, washed down by one or two drinks from the licensed bar. The evening was held in memory of long-serving Lion David Field, with proceeds from the evening shared by Parkinson’s UK and going towards the

restoration of the Barford Youth and Community building. I am delighted to announce that just over £1,000 was raised.

A huge ‘thank you’ to all sponsors, lion owners and punters, lasagne makers and everyone who helped to make the evening such a success. We are now gearing up for this year’s Santa floats. We will be out and about in the district from

Wednesday, 5 December until Wednesday, 19 December. I’m not yet able to give full details of where we will be on

each evening but an itinerary will be published in next month’s Grapevine. We will be announcing details on our new

website www.wellesbourne-lions.org.uk. Details will also be available on Facebook www.facebook.com/wdlionsclub/ or Google Wellesbourne and District Lions Club. Twitter: Wellesbourne Lions or @wdlclub AS

Hampton Lucy’s Annual Skittles Night

The Hampton Lucy Village Hall Committee are once again delighted to host the traditional Village Skittles Night on Saturday, 24 November, starting at 7.00pm. The customary fish and chips will be served at about 8.00pm and will need

to be ordered at least 3 days before the event, so do book your place and your supper by then! The evening is always

well supported but the room’s capacity is about 50 so it will be first come, first served. There will be a bar, and prizes for the winning children and adults. Admission is £5 per person, £12 per family and fish and chips will be £8, or just

regular chips £2.50 and small chips £2. We are raising funds for new LED lighting in the hall, costing £2500, so there

will be a larger than usual raffle and offers of sponsorship will be welcomed. If you’re considering raising charitable funds by some wacky challenge do think about donating to the village hall - a listed building in a conservation area,

owned by a charity and serving the community. Every little helps! Thank you in anticipation for your support and we

look forward to seeing you on the 24 November. ELH

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI Jane Barnes, who runs a dairy farm with her husband and their son, gave a talk at the October meeting

entitled Tales from a Dairy Farmer's Wife. It became clear that being a dairy farmer is very much a way of

life and no two days are the same. It was an amusing and an entertaining account of her day-to-day life and caused much hilarity. Jane, her husband Mark and their son Harry rear and milk Ayrshire cattle on their family-run

farm in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, supplying Long Clawson Dairy with milk to make their renowned Stilton

cheese. At the Warwickshire Federation WI Centenary Show at Napton, one of the prizes went to our own Jill Wilson for an exquisitely embroidered appliqué cushion which was on display at the meeting. Well done, Jill! Hampton Lucy

and Charlecote WI have enjoyed an interesting and enjoyable year and 2019, our Centenary Year will be even better

with a special programme of events. Now is a good time for anyone who may be interested in joining the Hampton

Lucy and Charlecote WI to come along to one of our meetings as a visitor - you will be sure of a warm welcome. Our next meeting, the Annual General Meeting, will be held in Hampton Lucy Village Hall on 7 November at 7.30pm. PT

The Boy From the Boro’ Charlecote Village Hall Committee will present a performance of The Boy From the Boro’ by

Three in One Productions on Saturday, 17 November. Marking the centenary of the WW1

Armistice and using extracts from war diaries, soldiers’ letters and the recorded stories of men who fought in the great war, ‘The Boy From the Boro’ portrays the personal, sometimes

harrowing story of Arthur Horobin, a young Nuneaton lad - one of so many drawn into the

world-wide conflict. Doors open at 7.00pm and tickets are £12 each including a 2-course hot supper and glass of wine! For further details and to buy tickets please contact Katriona Collins,

Requiem Concert - Commemorating the end of WW1 On Saturday, 24 November at 7.30pm in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, the Stratford-upon-Avon Choral

Society presents a Requiem Concert to mark the ending of the Great War of 1914-1918. Gabriel Fauré’s setting of the

Latin Requiem is melodic and uplifting and was composed in 1887. John Rutter’s Requiem, completed in 1985 includes psalms Out Of The Deep (Psalm 130) and The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23) sung in English and features solos for

cello, soprano and oboe. Both of these sacred choral works are lovely to sing and to listen to. The soloists and choir will

be accompanied by the Regency Sinfonia. Stratford Choral Society’s Music Director, Stephen Dodsworth, now in his 28th year, is the choir’s longest serving conductor. In 2016 the Choral Society celebrated 180 years since it was first formed

and shares the accolade, with the Huddersfield Choral Society, of being one of the oldest choral societies in the country.

Tickets are £15 (adults) or £8 (students) and are available at Holy Trinity Bookstall, via

[email protected] by phone on 01608682049, or at the door on the night. Up to two children under 16

free of charge if accompanied by an adult. For further information, phone Elizabeth Hunter on 01789 840329. EH

Charlecote Quiet Garden

Do you find peace and consolation when out in nature? Are you interested in mediation and mindfulness? Are you always intending to take time out to rest and to think but never seem to get around to it? Then you might be interested in

joining one of our upcoming quiet days:

Thursday, 8 November, and Saturday, 10 November, 10.00am to 4.00pm: Remembering – to live in the moment. In this season of remembrance, this quiet day will offer an opportunity to reflect upon the memories that shape our lives

and open up space to live in the moment.

Tuesday, 20 November, 3.00pm to 9.00pm: Seeing - in the dark. At this time of year when darkness dominates our days, join us for a quiet evening with a difference. As the sun sets we

will go outside and experience the arrival of darkness, using our senses to help us ponder the dark periods of our faith

journeys, and the promise of dawn. Wrap up warm. Bring a torch. Expect a hearty dinner and plenty of hot chocolate!

Wednesday, 5 December: Preparing – for encounter. Advent is all about preparation, but can we ever truly prepare ourselves for encounter with God? Escape the pre-

Christmas madness and find out for yourself through simplicity, silence and scripture. Suggested donation: £20, includes

lunch and refreshments Wanted: Volunteer Gardeners. If you like tending a garden, not your own, and have a few hours to spare to tame a

wild garden then please get in touch. We are always looking for willing volunteers!

Loxley School Harvest Service

On Tuesday, 9 October at 9.30am, Loxley Primary School had a fantastic time celebrating Harvest during a sunny service in St Nicholas’church led by Rev’d David Jessett,

who welcomed everybody on arrival. The children shared

prayers they had written and themed work they had completed in class. Parents and families were invited to

join in with the singing of harvest hymns. Head Teacher

Emma Barrick and members of school staff were very proud of how sensibly the children walked down through

the village, how well they behaved in the church and how

beautifully they sang - they were a credit to the school. In

addition, the children and parents generously donated various items to Stratford-upon-Avon Foodbank, and

received a visit from one of their volunteers who thanked

them and shared information about what the food is for and

where it goes. LR
