2 The special ‘Where Did I Come From?’ family night program for students in Years 3- 5 will take place in Week 5 at 6pm sharp on Wednesday night, 4th November in the school library. The program will be at a cost of $25 per family and is only open to parents and students of Years 3, 4 and 5. The 60 minute program is specifically designed to encourage interaction between parents and their child/ren and is lots of fun. It deals with the physical differences between boys and girls, and how babies are conceived and delivered. I highly recommend it to all. An information flier and payment option notification were sent out mid Term 3. Families were asked to make payments prior to the program in order to ensure we have sufficient numbers for it to be viable. To date, we have 29 wonderful families who have paid to attend. On the night, there will be a fabulous range of books dealing with changes to our bodies, where we come from and what it’s like to be a teenager, available for sale. They also offer a range of parenting books linked to what to expect as your child hits the teenage years . It is still not too late to book a spot for your family if it had slipped your mind. Please see the office staff for an application form. This year we will be making some changes to our annual Presentation Day services. As a staff, we have decided to streamline the number and type of awards we hand out on the day. More information regarding the structure of the celebrations will be outlined as soon as details are confirmed. One definite change that we wanted to notify parents and carers about was that we will be presenting Attendance Awards and Take Home Reading Awards at our final assemblies of the year rather than as part of Presentation Day ceremonies. Therefore, the following dates should go into your family diary. Both special assemblies will be held in Week 9 in the school hall. 3-6 on Tuesday 1st December at 11:55am ~ K-2 on Thursday 3rd December at 2pm. One final thing to mention… yes those dreaded head lice are back. Our office has taken numerous calls from parents over the past week, notifying us that their child has contracted head lice. Three separate classes have had notes sent home and I am sure that there are many other families who have just gone ahead and treated their child’s hair without letting us know. Therefore, I ask parents to take 5 minutes this week to do a quick examination of your child’s hair, in order to keep the spread of head lice throughout WBPS to a minimum. Ms McFarlane returns to work on Friday 6th November. We look forward to seeing her and her stilettos around the place again. Warm regards, Janine Patrick Relieving Principal

Assistant Principal Report Modern schools are always very busy places with such a large variety of programs and activities occurring on a daily basis. This time of year is even more hectic, with so much to do and time running out before the end of the year. Teachers and students are busily attending to assessment tests, leading into the writing of end of year reports. Transition programs are under way for our 2016 Kinder students, and for our Year 6 students leaving for High School. At the same time, teachers are involved in organising for the transition of students into next year’s classes and this is can be a lengthy and sometimes very complex process where a lot of thought goes into having a positive outcome for all students. Along the way we have some important excursions for our Year 5 and Year 6 students to Canberra over 4 days, and our Year 3 and Year 4 students heading into Newcastle to experience the Memorial Walk. Then at the end of the year we will participate in our Presentation Day ceremonies and Year 6 will have their Farewell, not to mention Party Day for everyone. These are all important occasions for all of our students, and some memories that they will carry with them for many years. Presentation Day will run in a similar fashion to previous years with the K-2 presentation starting at 9.30am, followed by Year 3-5 classes at about 10.15am. Parents are invited to stay for a picnic lunch with the students, before the major Presentation for Year 6, when all other students will also attend. This will commence at 12.00pm. All students will receive certificates on this day, but in a change from previous years, only the main awards for each class will be handed out at the Presentation day ceremonies.

4 Library News Borrowing It’s wonderful that we have so many keen borrowers at Warners Bay. This means there are many students well on the way to becoming great readers. In order to borrow, students must have some sort of library bag to take their books home and return them to school. They must also return any overdue books. Thank you so much to all the wonderful parents who ensure this happens. MS Readathon The MS Readathon people have asked me to remind you sponsorship payment must be made by October 31. They also are reminding anyone who is making a bank deposit into their account that you must also send a payment form so they know where to allocate the money. Happy reading! Ros Beard World Teachers Day and Gonski Week This week is National Gonski Week (commencing on October 26) and includes World Teachers Day on Friday October 30. This week celebrates the additional funding schools have already been receiving across Australia and hopefully beyond 2017. We look forward to a bright future where all schools in Australia have the resources they need to provide the best possible education for our children. At Warners Bay Public School, we have enjoyed receiving increased assistance for our students to improve their academic skills. For more information, feel free to visit the website igiveagonski.com.au To celebrate World Teachers Day, Warners Bay Public School staff will be taking on a student representative team in a fun game of Touch Football. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will watch what is becoming known as ‘The Most Anticipated Game of the Day’. Have a great week! Andrew Overdijk Presentation Day – Gold Awards Students that have received 10 Achievement Awards are encouraged to hand them in to the office so that their Gold Awards can be prepared for Presentation Day. Whooping cough There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies. Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at night.

• Children with these symptoms should see a doctor. • If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in your school-aged child, please let the school know and keep your

child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies. • Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades with time. Check that

all your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young children, such as school staff and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who are new parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about appropriate immunisation. Your local public health unit can provide advice about whooping cough on 1300 066 055 or visit the NSW Health website for information for childcare and schools about whooping cough.

5 Kindergarten News Kinder Orientation: All of the children had a wonderful time last Wednesday visiting the Year 5 classrooms whilst the Kindergarten teachers were busy with our 2016 Kindergarten children and their buddies. We have two more Orientation visits this Wednesday, 28th October and next week Wednesday, 4th November. We will not be running literacy groups on these days. Car Park Safety: Just a reminder the carparks at school are for staff parking and not a drop off zone. Recently we’ve had some children being dropped off in the Jones Avenue Car Park and then they walk through the carpark. There is a safe walkway from the pedestrian gate. Please pass message this on to any aunties, uncles, grandparents or family friends who are dropping off or collecting your child. We also have a small number of children running through the carpark in Augusta Street. It is a carpark and walking and stopping and checking for moving cars are the correct procedures. Homework Bags: Please send the bags into school on a Thursday and ensure all the whiteboard marker has been cleaned off the pages. It is best that the children complete each page and clean off the marker straight away. Hand sanitiser and spray and wipe work on more stubborn pages. Warmer Weather: All of the children must have a hat to wear at school each and every day. If they have no hat they must stay in the shade under the COLA. We have lots of bugs and creepy crawlies out and about with the warmer weather. Head lice are on the move, please check your child’s hair and if necessary treat accordingly. There have been a large number of mosquito and ant bites. A quick spray of mosquito repellent in the morning or the bands to wear at school may reduce the mozzie bites. The children need to be careful where they put their food containers and clothing to avoid the ants. KH are up on stage running our K-2 Assembly this Thursday, 29th October. It will be KB’s turn next time on Thursday, 12th November. We hope you had a wonderful break and are now back into the daily challenge of school routines. NRL Clinic Last week all the children were lucky enough to participate in a free coaching clinic organised by the NRL. A fabulous fun time was had by all. We practiced our ball and movement skills. Homework Bags These went home last Friday and of course will return on Thursday. If your bag is missing anything then please let us know so we can rectify the problem. We do check the bags each week but it is very easy to miss a sheet. Star of the Week To ensure all the children get a second turn at being a "STAR", we will choose two stars each week this term. Don't forget to take photos of your child and the class mascot. We know this can be quite a "surprise" at times, so please send the poster in for display, as soon as possible. This way we can see what they have been up to over the weekend and display them in our classrooms. Stage One News Hello and welcome to Weeks 4 and 5! The term is already going so quickly. A few reminders: Hats and Drink Bottles: The weather has certainly got warmer so it is so important that the children have their hat with them every day to protect their skin. If they do not they will have to remain under covered shelters to play. It is also important that the children have adequate water, and are reminded to get a drink at break times and have a drink bottle with them each day to use in class. Christmas Craft: All the fun of Christmas Craft will start in Week 6. A note detailing dates and times will be sent home shortly.

6 Transition Program: As we are getting closer to the end of the school year, we are beginning to prepare the children for the move to a higher grade. For example on Orientation Day, Year Two had a guided tour of the primary playground and joined the senior children to have lunch. In the coming weeks, Ms Hamilton will be coming into Stage One classrooms and talking with the children about getting ready for next year. Information concerning the transition program will be sent home at a later date. What’s happening in 2SJ? In 2SJ we are enjoying writing our power sentences each week. In class we have been learning about the life cycle of frogs, so our power writing sentence was based on a picture of a tadpole attached below. The children were asked to extend upon the basic sentence, “The tadpole swam.” Here are some of our efforts: When the sun sparkled off the water, the young, little tadpole swam quickly like a swordfish swimming away from a massive great white shark. By Liam Wilson When the sun was shining down, the black, small tadpole swam quickly like a fire truck going to an emergency. By Madeline Stonehouse In the middle of the day, the small, legendary tadpole swam fast like a shark trying to catch its prey. By Tallis Jones On a cloudy day, the cute, baby tadpole swam slowly like a turtle. By Lahni Gallagher At midday, the beautiful, amazing tadpole swam swiftly like a fish swimming away from a shark. By Niamh Mulhall

Stage Two News Like all classes we have been very busy completing assessment tests in preparation for end of year reports.

• English focus – writing narratives. Class reader – Paul Jennings stories and the methods he uses in his writing, and why he has become such a successful author

• Maths – 8 times tables leading into 9 times in Week 5. Looking at factors and multiples and reviving the four operations including the multiplication process.

• PE/HPE - catching, throwing, striking - diamond cricket. • HSIE – National Parks • CAPA – Weaving; perspective in drawing; song for the year 6 farewell.

We enjoyed showing off some artwork and reciting Monday Blues at the last Primary Assembly. The students did remarkably well to learn their poem in such a short time (with a few students learning more than one poem). We are also looking forward to our excursion into Newcastle for the Memorial Walk on Wednesday 18th November – please get your permission notes in ASAP. Cheers, Mark Toohey

7 Stage Three News Yr6 Assembly: The next assembly will be held on Tuesday 27th October at 12noon in the school hall. 3/4J will be running the assembly; there will also be a gymnastics performance at the assembly, we hope to see you there. Notes – Canberra excursion notes were sent home with your child last week. Please ensure you complete and return the medical information page, permission slip and also the swimming permission note. Please keep the itinerary sheets as a reference. Please encourage your child to organise their belongings for the excursion so they can further develop their organisational skills. If you have any questions please ask your child to ask their teacher for clarification. Interrelate Program – Yr6 – This Tuesday will be the last day of the Interrelate Program. The students have been involved in these extremely beneficial information sessions over the past four Tuesdays. Please discuss the content with your child and look through the booklet and encourage them to ask questions to seek clarification. The workbooks should be kept for future reference. Daily Fitness – Daily fitness activities now include a ‘Wednesday Walk’. There has been an overall positive response to the daily fitness addition, which already includes the exciting, energetic dance routines. We want to encourage all students to continue to pace themselves and understand that fitness requires development over a period of time and with continued focus in this area we believe that students will benefit from this program. Buddy Program Yr5 – Congratulations to the wonderful Yr5 students that helped with the ‘Kinder-Train’ orientation activities for next year’s kindergarten students. We heard many positive comments from the little ones and their parents. The program runs for the next 3 consecutive Wednesdays. Keep up the great work Yr5. What’s happening in 5/6B? In HSIE this term we are studying Australian Politics in preparation for the upcoming excursion to Canberra. The boys and girls have been learning about the roles of Local, State and Federal Governments. Discussions have included the establishment of rules and laws. It would be fantastic if you could continue these discussions with your child. They have also been looking at the unique design features of Parliament House. The children have also been sketching this wonderfully unique building. I am looking forward to visiting Canberra with our students and having a close look at the design features.
