A L ARGE AnD DivERsE CommuniTY We shape each school year in collaboration with our learners and we encourage active participation from our learners. This, in order to teach you how to set goals and make decisions in collaboration with your fellow learners and teachers. Ranum Efterskole College is an opportunity for a fantastic community, academic and personal selfconfidence, as well as the courage to meet new challenges in the world!

A YEAR WiTh A viEW We have a strong international focus, and we believe that interacting with other cultures will ultimately strengthen your personal development. Efterskole is a concept not easily translated - thus we have incorporated the word ‘collge’. Our learners learn to become world citizens, and we invite guests into our community - just as we visit other schools and partners around the world.

It is impossible to describe a stay at an efterskole in words - it must be experienced! On the following pages maybe you will find some inspiration for your own great adventure - and maybe you will find the courage to experience it. See you...Kind regards,

“My year at the efterskole, was witout a doubt the best year ever.” Noah Paludan, learner 13-14 “RE gave me a new perspective on society and friendships. It was life changing!” Jeppe Schwartz Sørensen, learner 13-14

focus on your levelRanum Efterskole College is an academic international residential school with the mission of improving learners’ academic skills and improving learners’ ability to manage themselves in a global society. This is the reasoning behind our structure of 4 x 4 different academic levels within our range of subjects, so each learner will find academic subject levels that match their individual skills and competencies, and experience a learning experience directed at their needs. We believe this approach to learning creates the best foundation for personal development. The social intercourse between learners and teachers day and night – all week, provides for a unique learning environment, not experienced elsewhere.

Enlightenment for life ...It is always the mission to improve academic skills of a learner enrolled in Ranum Efterskole College – regardless of background. The strongest foundation for solid academic improvements is created when new knowledge makes sense. Thus, you will find that the academic learning is integrated with co- and extracurricular subject activities as well as travels abroad. The geography and social conditions of each destination are integral elements in each subject related – just as Danish, language and citizenship are integral elements in co- and extracurricular subjects and travel destinations. Thus, academic knowledge is augmented with a practical dimension and becomes an experience of general enlightenment for life!

Solidarity & CommunityThe subject knowledge at Ranum Efterskole College depends on- and is the direct result of solid teacher-learner collaboration. Learners and teachers spend time together on very different conditions from the

conventional government school: During lessons, tutoring, spare time, co- and extracurricular activities and club activities. With it, emerges a mutual obligation that both teachers and learners come to benefit from. Particularly during travelling, a special bond emerges between learners as well as between learners and teachers – it creates a unique community feeling, which becomes the framework of safety and trust lasting all the way through to the final examinations. We call it ‘the guiding social interaction’ and it is proven to be successful!

DiversityThe range of the school is im-portant to the diversity here, because we are able to offer a wide range of academic cours-es, subjects, co- and extracurric-ular at different levels. This cre-ates the perfect opportunity for learners to create a personalised learning experience that matches their exact needs, interests and skills. All subjects are taught concurrent during the week, which means that it is possible to change level according to personal de-velopments independent of other subjects or the course programme in general. The concurrent structure allows for teachers to co-operate and create coherence between courses, subjects and the different academic levels in the subjects – higher consistency! We have learners and teachers from all over the country and from all parts of the world – which means that Ra-num Efterskole College is a social community of diversi-ty. This diversity is also what enables us to offer learn-ing in 5 different languages and a wide range of subjects.

LearningAll subjects at Ranum Efterskole College are offered at different academic levels and we strive to create coherence between the school and the world outside.

”We take as starting point the academic competencies of each learner and offer them a framework for their personal interests, so that they in return experience that it is awesome to learn and that they want to learn more.” Olav Storm, principal

Global learning

We combine the efterskole and collegeWe combine the very best from the efterskole with the strongest and most widespread international educational programme for 14-16 year-olds.Cambridge IGCSE and Advanced Level are taught at more than 10.000 international schools and colleges around the world.

Why international qualifications? We expect that the future will demand solid language skills and intercultural competencies. We are already experiencing that English has become the primary language on most higher educations and in many large corporations - in Denmark and globally. It is essential to have strong linguistic competencies and be able to collaborate with others different from you.

CAmBRiDGE inTERnATionAL ExAminATionCambridge International Examination is a

non-for-profit division of Cambridge University.Ranum Efterskole College has been an independent International Cambridge School for the past 5 years, and we have collaborated closely with Cambridge International Examinations in relation to IGCSE and AS / A Levels.

GREAT ExAminATion REsuLTs Learners at Ranum Efterskole College have always performed well at the international examinations and our average is well above the global average in relation to grades. It is our experience that learners have no problem completing both their Danish- and their IGCSE examinations. 45 learners completed the international programme in school year 2013/14. This school year we have 109 learners enrolled in the international programme, of which 27 learners are non-residential citizens in Denmark. The programme addresses learners who are considering studying abroad or taking an international education in Denmark, as well as learners who are considering a Danish upper secondary education.

“The international course combines all the great things and the social aspect of efterskole-life and the study trips, you try something completely new, and it will give you unique opportunities for the future. Nanna Sidenius Gram, learner 13-14

8

“I have memories and friends for life. RE in my heart.” Christian Skovgård, learner 12-13

Page 9: The new Ranum Efterskole College Magazine 2014

IGCSE and AS/A levelIGCSE learners will get an international qualification and a examination certificate, which they can use in Denmark and around the world. IGCSE is ”International General Certificate of Secondary Education” aimed at learners 14-16 years old. AS Level is Advanced Subsidiary Level and the first year of an A Level (Advanced Level).

future?A school year with international learning at Ranum Efterskole College is an obvious opportunity to continue learning at either IB or abroad – for instance at one of Ranum Efterskole Colleges many international partner schools. You can also choose to continue at a Danish upper secondary education – the choice is yours! You can spend 1, 2 or even 3 years at Ranum Efterskole College.

international TeachersAll academic subjects in the international programme are taught in English, and all teachers are native speaking in their respective subjects. It is not required that learners speak English all day – only when it makes sense to do so!All teachers have extended experience in teaching IGCSEs and international learners. The teachers have a professional background from teacher training academies or university, supplemented with education and training from Cambridge CIE in their respective subjects.

inTERnATionAL LiTERATuRE AnD mATERiALsAll teaching materials used are written for international learners; learners who are non-native English speaking. This is a great advantage, as the

foundation for learning is to be found in this common denominator – being an international learner! ExAminATions AnD TEsTsIGCSE 9th grade learners will complete both IGCSE examination as well as the Danish FP9 examinations. We will teach you and prepare you for all your examinations – thus admittance to any upper secondary education is possible.

IGCSE 10th grade is assessment free according to Danish rule of Law. IGCSE 10th grade learners will though, take their IGCSE examination and FP10 Danish examination. We recommend that learners also complete their examinations in Math and English, but there are no official requirements. We must emphasise that special requirements may apply for learners, who do not complete FP10 Danish, English and Math, when applying for upper secondary education.

Sofie Storm Voss, 15 years old, Flensborg sAiLinG- CRoATiA: I chose sailing for my first trimester. It was such an awesome subject - being able to form a crew of learners and sail on the Limfjorden was really cool. In many ways, it was like we learned to sail on our own. On one hand we learned to sail on the other hand we formed an irresistible community with much fun. And then the best part - our journey to Croatia, where we sailed in all kinds of weather and just enjoyed ourselves.

nEPAL – TREkkinG: For my second trimester I chose the culture subject Nepal. During classes we were prepared for our journey to Nepal by guest

teachers from Nepal, who had come to stay at the school. This journey is probably one of the greatest experiences in my life. We were all so tired, but found friends for life. I had so much fun, but I was also pushed physically and emotionally.

WinTERsPoRT – iTALY:For my third trimester I chose skiing. Skiing was a huge experience, because I had never tried skiing before - but I learned very quickly. Before we travelled to Italy, we did a lot of physical activities and learned a great deal about safety. Our travel was very cosy and we had so much fun.

Jacob Bekhøj Jensen, 16 years old, Hurup Thy DivinG - EGYPT: I have been diving twice in Egypt, and I am a certified Padi Advanced Diver. I have also been in California on a high school exchange programme.

WATER PERfoRmAnCE - TYRkEY: Later I was in Turkey with Water Performance, and on a Europe tour in Eastern Europe, and I finished my trimester during my second year with street performance in Barcelona.

sTREET PERfoRmAnCE - BARCELonA: I was skating and looking at street art as a part of my journey with street performance to Barcelona. During classes we also tried parkour, we spent most of our time outside and we built our own longboards - we had a lot of fun.We travelled to Barcelona with the design- and circus learners, which was really cool. We experienced the street and city culture of Barcelona and got to hang out with some of the locals.

Co-curricular Co-CuRRICuLAR ARE AREAS oF InTEREST... Learners and teachers co-create unique learning processes, driven by commitment and the desire to learn together. Our co-curricular are integrated into our academic classes and courses, and theory and practice are united during our travels.

Ones interests changes according to learning new things and meeting new friends. Thus, we do not have the same co-curricular all year. Learners and teachers suggest new subjects 3 times during the year, and then we take it to a vote. This process is a strong motivator for learners - and teachers both!

unPARALLELED suPPLY of Co-CuRRiCuL ARAll learners will have the opportunity to choose freely among all co- and extracurricular. Each trimester has a selection of 16-20 different co- and extracurricular to choose from - with this diverse range, there is something of interest for everyone!

PRofiLEs AnD CuLTuREThe purpose of the co-curricular is to practice a skill , use it and create a profile. The 2. trimester focusses on culture with the purpose of forming cross-cultural friendships.

naturesport & imagination:Co-curricular are divided into two main profiles: Naturesport and Imagination, which combined comprises of physical and creative activities.

nATuREsPoRT...means sport with meaning - that you use sport activities to practice skills, you would use when diving, sailing or the like. During our travels, our skills will be put to the test.

imAGinATion ...is about creating creative experiences and productions, which inspire and motivates others to be participatory - this , for instance, by playing a concert in music or creating new furniture of old ones as in visual design.

3 co-curricular and travelsAt Ranum Efterskole College, the school year is divided into trimesters, and you can therefore choose a new co-curricular 3 times. After Each trimester acquired skills will be tried through our travels.

Co-curricular are an incentive for commitment and limitless learning

TRIMESTER 3: FEB. - Jun.

The third trimester focusses on personal development and enlightenment, by combining content and purposes from first and second trimesters - for example:The dance team travels to New York to be in a high school as well as to experience the dance culture in New York. By this trimester, the learners are experienced in forming new co-curricular and do so with a passion.

TRIMESTER 2: oCT. - FEB.

In the second trimester, we focus on culture and world citizenship. All subjects will take its point of departure in a country’s or a continent’s culture e.g. Europe, USA, South Korea, Nepal, China and son on. In each of these co-curricular, all learners are well prepared for their travels. During our travels we meet young locals, live with them and form friendships for life.

TRIMESTER 1: AuG. - oCT.

The purpose of the first trimester, which is chosen by the learner before the school year starts, is to prepare for the first travels. You will learn to set personal goals as well as common goals for the group to achieve. For example, we train for a Padi Open Water diving certificate in order to pass the certicate on our travels to the Mediterranean at the end of the trimester.

“This journey is probably one of the greatest experiences in my life. We were all so tired, but found friends for life. I had so much fun, but I was also pushed physically and emotionally” Sofie Storm Voss, learner 13-14

”We danced in the desert and met a culture very different from ours” Rebekka Juel Larsen, learner 13-14 ”It was really exciting to co-create the co-curricular ‘circus’.” Thomas Grahdin Jensen, learner 13-14

Culture

nepal Friendship schoolYou will never forget the children from the friendship school, to whom we have prepared a project for. We stay with local families, we raft, we hike in the jungle and we visit Kathmandu.

nepal himalaya The absolutely most challenging adventure- and culture trek demands both physical and emotial preparations. We hike in 4500m. height and we finish our expedition with a culture visit to Kathmandu.

marokko PerformanceWe used dancing, gymnastics and tricking to do a African/Danish performance show before departure. The show was a doorway to meet Maroccan young people, and we experienced culture and nature up front - among other, during our hike in the Sahara.

nepal TrekkingTrekking in Nepal on the edge of Himalaya demands thorough preparation in nature, religion and societal conditions of Nepal. We live with locals, raft, hike in the jungle and visit Kathmandu.

ChinaWe co-operate with a school near Beijing. We live with local families and experience their everyday life. There are many areas of interest in China, such as, Kung Fu, the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.

nicaraguaWe work with different aspects of sustainability and the earth’s ressources. Via the non-profit organisation ‘Forests of the World’, we visit a school and a farmer in the jungle. It is a very demanding journey!

usA - miamiMiami and Florida are, to many, just sun, sand and chilling. but we also learn about American culture and society. We visit a high school, companies and a court. We also try out the American way of life by sightseeing and doing sport.

south koreaSouth Korea is full of political tensions and we prepare ourselves on history and culture. We visit local schools and experience the relationship between the North and the South.

PeruA group of learners took the initiative to study and travel to Peru. They managed to put a group together and planned an amazing trip to, among other, Machu Picchu and the lake of Titikaka. We also visited an orphanage in Cuzco.

Wintersport - italySkiing and culture are challenging, when we bring Malaysian guest learners out into the snow. We train hard before departure, and we learn about techniques and gear. Our last travel took us to Passo Tonale, Italy.

JapanJapanese culture is best experienced when interacting with young Japanese people. We visit schools and companies in Tokyo. We learn of Japanese culture and language before we travel to Japan.

Europe TourOn this trip it is the responsibility of the learners to present a country and a town. They plan meetings with other learners, who share their interests. We have previously driven both in North- and South Europe.

Learners and teachers co-create new co-curricular 3 times a year. The process of voting is an essential part in the pedagogical mission of the school. The faraway destinations involve self-payment, and everyone must prioritise during the school year. There will always be travels without self-payment, as well as an opportunity to apply for additional funding. See last pages in the paper.

”We were allowed to sail on our own” Sofie Storm Voss, learner 13-14 ”The many travels is one of Ranum’s most amazing features.” Rebekka Juel Larsen, learner 13-14

Efterskole lifeA year at an efterskole is a social year. Friendships for life are founded and words such as ‘community’, ‘tolerance’ and ‘openmindedness’ are conceptualised.

fabulicious efterskole lifeNikoline and Anna live together in one of the 2 bedroom residential rooms in Ranum Hus. The girls are learners from year 14/15 and has managed in a couple of weeks to create a bond and a unity that will influence them for the rest of their lives. Their room is filled with friends and the atmosphere is “faboulicius” (Fabulous + delicious).

RoomiEs AnD fRiEnDs”It is very strange to think , that we probably would not talk with each other, if we did not go to the same efterskole. Had we met at a different place, we may have been too different from each other to experience what we have in common. It will be very hard for us, when we cannot be together every day anymore.” “We talk, laugh and have a good time, and we have become each other’s confidentials”. The two girls share the cleaning of the room and the shared bathroom. “It works well, as long as there is music playing.”

”The room was definitely the thing that worried me the most, before I started at Ranum. But I loved my room. The four of us were great roomies. We talked about everything. We knew each other inside out, actually I think they sometimes knew me better than I knew myself. We had so much fun together, and we could do everything together. When living so close together for an entire year, you have to make compromises and be able to talk about any issues.” Sofie Thybo, learner 13-14

World kitchenAt Ranum Efterskole College, we combine our focus on healthy diets and lifestyle with our interest in the world - which can be seen in our unique world kitchen. With former restaurateur and world champ in desserts, Lars Jeppesen, as head-chef, there is no doubt that learners are guaranteed a taste experience never tried before - and which they will remember long after.

fooD foR YouR sEnsEs ”Here at Ranum Efterskole College, we cook by using our senses. It is our ears, eyes, tastebuds and our heart, that will lead the way to the great taste - and our learners love it! Once they realise how real food is cooked and should taste, they become so absorbed by the world of cooking ,” says Lars Jeppesen.

He underlines, that the food and the dishes never comes without a little extra spice in terms of stories and facts about the ingredients and the origins of the dishes.

GAsTRonomiCAL JouRnEYs”We find inspiration from the many travels the learners have taken or they prepare for, in order to

widen their knowledge of food, quality and flavours in the culture they soon will visit. If we have a thai-theme, we may sit on the floor, in order to create an authentic atmosphere around the meal. We revive the unity and create a time with no stress and room for everyone - vegetarians, learners on a specialised diet and allergics” says Lars Jeppesen.

hEALThY LifEsTYLE, DiETs AnD fRuiTEvery day we have wholemeal bread and salad bar at every meal, and despite a bit of scepticism from the learners in the beginning, the mood has started to turn on the matter. “The most important thing is the flavour. If you make healthy, but bland food, there is no doubt that the learners will find their way to the nearest burgerbar. That is why my most important task is to cook food, that the learners will enjoy,” says Lars Jeppesen. As an example of his philosophy, he mentions that the school offers fruit all day for the taking. Before, the school would hand out 2-3 pieces of fruit at certain times of the day, but ‘forcing’ learners to eat furit at certain times resulted in a lot of waste - instead cooling boxes were put up and it is now possible for learners to take fruit at any time - which have resulted in more fruit being eaten…

Extracurricular & ClubsA wide range of activities and club activities are offered every evening. Clubs begin at 7.30pm after dinner and homework. There are so many options to choose from, that making a choice might be difficult. But the programme changes during the year, and learners are encouraged to suggest new activities. REC-EVEnTS.. .are events for all learners at the school. It can be concerts, Halloween, Prom or the like. During the school year, we also have several theme-weeks, focussing on drama, music or performance and so on.

THE MuSIC RooMS.. .are to some like a second home, and music is played every day. The piano becomes the centre for singing sessions, whilst the stage become the centre for concerts with famous bands and musicians.

‘MuLTIkuLTuRHuSET’. . .is a large hall and two smaller halls, which can be used for climbing, basket, handball and soccer. During the summer period, we use the out-door facilities.

RønBJERG.. .is our maritime home ground. We have 7 boats in the harbour here, a wakeboard training ground and a swimming pool. It is also here in Rønbjerg, that the horse stables are, for those who bring their horses.

“We built our own skating ramps and longboards in the schoolyard, and the big ramp in the skating hall was more than enough of a challenge!”Jacob Bekhøj Jensen, learner 13-14

166 years of school historyIn 1848, Ranum was a village with 14 farms, 15 houses and a village pond. The citizens of Ranum were peaceful, devouted and sober people, and this was most likely a contributing factor, when the town was authorised to have a teachers’ college.

founDED in ThE iDEAs of GRunDTviG AnD koLD The first provost of the college, Ludvig Christian Müller, was a great personality. He came from Copenhagen, where he had led the fairy tale writer H.C. Andersen to take his General Certificate of Secondary Education, where he had taught theologian and writer Søren Kirkegaard, and where he had socially interacted with Grundtvig and Kold. Thus, Ranum Teachers’ College was from the beginning strongly influenced by the learning philosophies, ideas and principles of Grundtvig and Kold.

5000 TEAChERs The teacher training in Ranum continued from 1848 to 1987, and during those 139 years approximately 5000 teachers passed their teacher training exams - making Ranum Teachers’ College the largest teachers’ college in the country for many years. With the large number of learners coming to the college and the town, business boomed and for a period, the town had almost 70 shops. Many learners made a permanent move to Ranum and many of the local youths became teachers or married a teacher. The college had a strong influence in the area.

FRoM TEACHERS’ CoLLEGE To InDEPEnDEnT REsiDEnTiAL sChooL After the teacher training was closed down in Ranum in 1987, the college continued with pedagogue training and HF (Higher Preparatory Examination Course). Ranum Efterskole, an independent residential school, was established in 2004 in two of the former dormitories. The former college was purchased by Ranum Efterskole in 2009 and converted into a modern efterskole.

10 -YEAR AnnivERsARY Ranum Efterskole celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2014 and

expanded its activities to include the acquisition of the former folk high

school Ranum Hus (Ranum House). This means that the eastern part of Ranum town, over the past 10 years, has become a campus area for learners aged 14-18 with excellent residential-, learning- and sports facilities.

The school has during the same period increased its seats from

86 to 425 and the number of employees from 15 to 81.

RAnum EfTERskoLE CoLLEGE An increased international focus and relations to other schools and learners around the world, reuslted in Ranum Efterskole changing its name in 2014 to Ranum Efterskole College. The old educational buildings of Ranum is now, once more, full of life and the proud educational traditions of the town are today spread out into the whole world.

CampusRanum Efterskole College celebrates its 10-year anniversary and continues the proud educational traditions of Ranum

The Teachers’ College was originally placed in Ranum because the distance from

here to each of the three major towns of Thisted, Aalborg and Viborg was

60 km.

On the occasion of the 10-year anniversary, a stone was

lowered into the ground in the middle of the school to pay

tribute to the name of Ranum - which means, the place in

the middle.

Three houses and a large community in the middleWith 405 learners enrolled, Ranum Efterskole College is now one of the largest general efterskoles in Denmark. The learners will stay at the campus, which in many ways is a small town in its self. The school is comprised of 3 main houses: Kærhuset, Seminariehuset and Ranum Hus. In total Ranum Efterskole College has more than 18.200m2 available to its disposition - so there is plenty of room for everyone!

L ARGE AnD smALL CommuniTiEs Approximately 40 contact groups reside in each of the 3 main houses. Each contact group consists of

9-10 learners, and each group is appointed a personal contact teacher. These groups eat, clean and cook together. Each contact group has a ‘friendship group’ in one of the other houses in order to encourage friendships all over the school.

CuLTuRE in CommonRanum Efterskole College arranges various school-events such as live-concerts, ‘The Stage is Yours’ and ‘cosy evenings’. The learners are mixed in their residencies across 9th and 10th grade, and the co- and extracurricular. This strengthens the diversity of the school and provides a framework with room for all.

Guided tours begin from the granite staircase in front of the main building.

kærhuset Kærhuset is designed with 2-3 beds in the residential rooms and 4-6 beds in the small studios. There are common rooms, fitness room and a dining room. The Imagination loft in Kærhuset is also used as a dance studio, and its large space is ideal for sleepovers and concerts in the weekends.

Ranum hus

Ranum Hus is designed with 2-3 beds in the residential rooms. The rooms are clustered around their own tv- and common rooms, and there are no stairs here.

Between Ranum Hus and the main building is Ranum ‘Multikulturhus’ - an activity center with 3 sports halls, climbing wall and a gym, as well as playing fields.

seminariehuset

Seminariehuset is designed with 30 studios. Our Three of Life is to be found in the schoolyard, close to which we have built a 100m2 large stage - perfect for parties. Inside the Seminariehuset, one will also find ‘Svederen’ - a large activity room with , among other things, a boulder climbing wall, parkour training ramps and gym. It is also in this building that many of our creative rooms, such as music, design, drama and media, are to be found.
