Amazon once had an auction site called Amazon Auction, which went
head-to-head with eBay. Auction shut down eventually, but it helped
Amazon launch its own online marketplace for third party vendors
called Amazon Marketplace, which is now a big part of its overall
business.
Amazon’s first smartphone, the Fire Phone, hasn’t been discontinued, but it’s been a pretty big flop so far. Amazon wrote off $170 million worth of unsold Fire Phones, and its hardware division has been cutting
jobs.

“In our seed business, it’s all about getting better and faster visibility into what’s going on in the fields during planting and harvest within breeding research and supply chain organizations. Using AWS IoT, we can get seed data to analysts in just a few minutes instead of a few days.”

Overview
New Zealand-based Figured provides financial-
management software for farmers, farm
accountants, farm advisors, and rural bankers.
Solution
Farmers use Figured software to complete critical
tasks such as managing livestock and crops,
creating budgets, and planning and forecasting
performance. The business relies on an IT
infrastructure to deliver information in real time,
and ensure farmers and other farm stakeholders
can access its system when they need to.
Impact
Figured is now achieving all the benefits the team
hoped for when moving to AWS. The flexibility
provided using AWS has enabled Figured to
undertake 1,690 releases over the last year to
improve its software.
“By taking advantage of the scalability of AWS compute and storage, we upload about three times as much data from the U.S. corn belt as a satellite service does of the whole world, and we still get this data to farmers’ the next morning.”
