PERSPECTIVES

Boost national prestige,integrity through literature

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negativeviews

* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Myanmar literature has flourishedthroughout successive periods. Men and womenof letters preserve a fine tradition of bringingdignity to own race and religious faith throughliterary works based on both mundane andsupramundane affairs, and making sustainedefforts to improve the mother tongue.

The government gives effectiveencouragement to Myanmar literary world byholding awarding ceremonies annually to honourliterati for their outstanding works.Organizations in many fields and well-wishersadd awards of all genres with the aim of helpingbring about literary works on building the nation.

Tun Foundation held its fourth AwardingCeremony (2009) at the Myanmar BanksAssociation in Yangon the other day. The genresincluded biography, health, archaic treaty(English) and reference (English), apart fromlife-long achievement award.

Indeed, literature serves as a driving forcebehind the bid to link the sectors of building thenation with one another. Literati are to help thepeople stay in touch with latest developmentsand expand their horizons; enhance thenationalistic spirit and national outlook of thepeople; and introduce classical works ofMyanmar and international affairs by creatingworks on information and knowledge.

Today, certain powerful countries useinformation technology as a tool to gaindomination over developing countries. Theyresort to all possible ways and means to makethe peoples of the Third World think highly ofWestern culture and lifestyles. Accordingly, thepeople have to overcome such attacks with ownliterary work and culture.

Literati and men of letters are, therefore, under a duty to write beneficial works ofliterature constantly, help preserve the nationalcharacter, and safeguard the national prestigeand integrity through the might of literature.

Patients often unaware of radiation risks Pair first to cross Antarctica unassistedNEW YORK, 25 Jan—Americans are

receiving more medical radiation thanever before, experts say, but while itsaves countless lives, serious, even fa-tal mistakes can happen.

With radiation therapy being deliveredby technologically complex machines, risks from software flaws, faulty pro-gramming, inadequate safety proceduresor poor training can lead to cripplingmistakes, The New York Times reportedon Sunday. The average lifetime radia-tion dose is seven times what it was in1980, but patients often are unaware ofrisks, the Times said in an analysis basedon a review of public and private recordsand interviews with physicians, research-ers, government regulators and others.

Hospitals often place too much trustin the new computer systems and soft-

ware, said Dr Howard I. Amols, chief ofclinical physics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

Since there is no single agency over-seeing medical radiation, regulators andresearchers can only guess how oftenradiotherapy accidents occur. Accidentsare under-reported, records show, andsome states do not require they be re-ported at all.

In June, the Times found, a Philadel-phia hospital gave the wrong radiationdose to more than 90 patients with pros-tate cancer — then did not report it.

“My suspicion is that maybe half ofthe accidents we don’t know about,” saidDr Fred A Mettler Jr, who has investi-gated radiation accidents around theworld.
