A change is happening day by day on the streets of Germany, Europe and the world, with widespread increases in the number of passengers using public transportation.This is increasing demand for a large-format bus in urban areas and the CapaCity L is the perfect candidate. It expertly navigates busy city transit lines during rush hour. It is also perfectly suited to specialised BRT systems on a separate route. Some of the reasons for its high performance are its impressive passenger capacity as well as its speedy passenger flow and a surprisingly small turning circle.

The vehicle’s steering, drive and dimensions also match the intelligent overall design based on high-volume production technology that has been tried and tested thousands of times. Its design and layout also leaves plenty of room for various customer wishes and requirements. The CapaCity L is therefore the perfect combination of unbeatable capacity and incredible flexibility in terms of deployment and route planning. Whether it’s a new shopping centre, residential district or industrial area, the CapaCity L can connect them all quickly and cost effectively. This large bus contributes significantly towards reducing inner-city traffic density.

Cities grow. So do our buses.

An impressive 21 meters from windscreen to tail lamp, the CapaCity L sets a European record. No other articulated public transport bus is more spacious. But there is a good reason for these impressive vehicle dimensions. They provide urgently-required passenger space. This large capacity bus can dynamically transport up to 191 passengers*. The new giant is continuing along the path successfully pioneered by its predecessor.

For years, the tried and tested Mercedes-Benz Euro V CapaCity has been the first choice for particularly high passenger capacity. Around 350 models of Europe’s most successful high-capacity bus are already deployed in around a dozen cities. At the request of transit operators, the bus has now grown again. In addition to its extended length, the CapaCity L impresses with its dynamic handling, safety components and manoeuvrability.

Maximised capacity. Minimised costs.

The CapaCity L is an economic miracle right from the first drive, but the full extent of its efficiency really comes into play when viewed over its full life cycle. A decisive factor is the new vehicle’s pedigree: the CapaCity L is based on the tried and tested Citaro platform, which means maximum ease of maintenance and repair as well as low procure ment and upkeep costs. Drivers and workshop employees do not have to get used to a new vehicle.

Despite its significant length, the CapaCity L is way ahead of its competitors with just one joint. The resulting low maintenance costs and excellent reliability also contribute to minimised life-cycle costs. With its low-consumption engine, economy is another core value of the CapaCity L: the unique and recently-developed anti-buckling ATC (Articulation Turntable Controller) system provides optimum steering performance and ensures quick and demand-based regulation of hydraulic joint damping. If the bus’s driving status becomes dynamic – on icy roads, for example – ATC stabilises the articulated bus as effectively as possible. In this way, the unique for its kind anti-buckling system simulates the effects of an ESP® (Electronic Stability Program). The CapaCity L achieves a new level of safety for articulated buses.

First class as standard.

For passengers, a journey in the CapaCity L is a pleasure. Its interior has a friendly and open design and large wrap-around windows and an illuminated entrance area make the interior invitingly bright. The impressive standing height of 2.3 meters also creates a pleasant feeling of space. High-performance additional heating and side-wall heaters quickly and effectively adjust the interior temperature. Hinged windows, air ducts, electrical roof hatches and roof-mounted fans ensure effective air exchange. Optionally, a carefully-devised air conditioning system ensures the correct temperature in the large bus.

Curved and clearly-proportioned handrails provide safety and guide passengers through the bus. The flexibility of the hand rail system allows you to configure the vehicle interior according to your wishes and requirements. The same applies to the different available seat types and seating arrangements with their wide selection of colours, patterns and materials. Low entries and four doors provide excellent passenger flow and facilitate boarding and exiting – as if passengers would ever want to exit this bus!

A new but familiar driving experience. Drivers of the CapaCity L will find it familiar and easy to drive from the moment they get behind the wheel. The spacious and ergonomic cockpit is the same as the perfectly-designed driver’s cabin they will know from the rest of the Citaro range. In the CapaCity L, the driver is also seated on a raised platform at the same level as the passengers. This provides excellent all-round vision. The colourful and  easy-to-read central display provides important driving information at a glance.

The new multi-functional steering wheel makes it possible to control functions quickly and easily. It also has a pause function and – in combination with the instrument panel – can be adjusted in tilt and depth according to individual requirements. Practical stowage areas ensure a tidy driver’s station. Rear cameras ensure additional safety, making it easy for the driver to manoeuvre and reverse. The independent wheel suspension ensures another level of comfort while front impact protection provides the driver with another layer of passive safety.

High performance on the road – low maintenance in the workshop.

Brand new but tried and tested. That’s the new CapaCity L. To meet the wishes and requirements of transit operators, we placed great value on maximum ease of maintenance and repair when developing this new giant. Its use of the tried and tested Citaro modular system means that it bene-fits from many of the advantages of such a successful pedigree. Use of such a fully-developed design keeps repair and maintenance costs to a bare minimum and any work carried out is immediately effective. After all, maintenance-relevant components can be found in exactly the same place as on the Citaro G and are easy to access.

This facilitates workshop maintenance and repair as well as spare parts acquisition, and it reduces downtimes and costs. To ensure powerful and highly-efficient traction even in difficult topography, the CapaCity L uses tried and tested and perfectly coordinated drive components. The Mercedes-Benz BlueEfficiency Power engine OM470, an in-line six cylinder with a displacement of 10.7 l meets the Euro VI exhaust emissions stage and is available as a 265 kW (360 bhp) engine with 1700 Nm torque and as a 290 kW (394 bhp) engine with 1900 Nm torque. The engine and the adjusted automatic gears and all accessories are optimi-sed for fuel economy.
