With this issue we welcome the release of two new top models with higher performance: the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS.

“GTS” stands for Gran Turismo Sport and has promised outstanding Porsche performance ever since the legendary 904 Carrera GTS dating back to 1963.

With the new two-seaters, Porsche is renewing its commitment to genuine sports cars for both the race track and every day use with Australian deliveries commencing in August 2014.

With 65% of all Porsche sales now in the SUV segment, it’s no wonder Porsche is enjoyed by many families. So with the arrival of the Porsche Macan on the 14th June rapidly approaching, we have included an interesting article focusing on Porsche families and their stories.

We have included two service specials in this issue: a menu priced Factory Service including a free Porsche car wash kit and complimentary Porsche Roadside Assist, and a Porsche Rejuvenation Package to help restore your Porsche to showroom condition.

Our Porsche Sales Consultant, Stewart Budd, shares his craze for all things motorsport in his staff profile, we visit Le Mans and the Porsche 919 Hybrid with Mark Webber and we follow Shadforth Financial Group as they partner with PCW to provide their clients with an exclusive Driving the Range experience to the Hunter Valley.

I hope you enjoy this issue of W Magazine and look forward to seeing you again at Porsche Centre Willoughby.

Regards,

Rolling start.

Porsche Active Suspension Management or PASM for short is an electric damping control system. It offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.

During performance or heavy off road use, there is an increased tendency for the body of the vehicle to sway that is often referred to as ‘body roll’. PASM prevents this from happening, thereby improving stability and occupant comfort. PASM has three setup modes: ‘Comfort’, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ that are adjusted with the press of a button on the centre console.

Whichever one you select, the system uses a series of sensors to monitor the movement of the body. It also gathers data on lateral acceleration, steering angle, brake pressure and engine torque and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode.

PASM remains active at all times. It automatically adapts to the prevailing driving conditions, enabling greater car control and improving comfort and safety.

Just the idea of Porsche arouses sensations like feeling the wind against your skin and emotions that make you want to seek out every curve in the road. Until recently thoughts like these could hardly be improved upon, but now, thanks to three letters, they can be intensified!

The two fastest and most powerful mid-engine sports models from Porsche are ready and raring to go; with up rated engines and adaptive PASM chassis, the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS set new benchmarks for sportiness in their segment.

The name says it all: at Porsche “GTS” stands for Gran Turismo Sport and has promised outstanding Porsche performance ever since the legendary road going 904 Carrera GTS of 1963. In the 1980s and 1990s the 924 GTS and 928 GTS cultivated

this principle. It was reborn in 2007 with the Cayenne GTS and was subsequently implemented in the 911 and Panamera series. With the new two-seaters, Porsche is renewing its commitment to genuine sports cars for both the racetrack and everyday use.

It all begins with the newly defined GTS front end with its enduring contouring and largely dimensioned air intakes. An insatiable desire for acceleration is evident at first glance.

The effect is strengthened by the GTS specific smoked daytime running lights and position lights built on LED Technology. Bi-Xenon headlights, including the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) are fitted as standard and the black inner trims lend further prominence to the vertical arrangement of the headlights; an unmistakable reference to the motorsport

era of the 60s and 70s.

20” Carrera S wheels with a dynamic 10-spoke design can be painted in a black finish on request or optioned 20” Turbo wheels with rim-well painted in titanium and centre spokes in polished aluminium can add a special touch to this already sporty model.

The Boxster GTS with 6 Speed manual and Sport Chrono Package as standard accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds with a top speed of 281 km/h. The Cayman GTS reaches a top speed of 285 km/h with a 0-100 km/h speed of 4.9 seconds.

The sporty performance of both cars is only beaten with the optional 7-Speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) making the Boxster’s 0-100 km/h time jump to 4.7 seconds and the Cayman’s at 4.6 seconds.

R E A RThe restyled rear apron, LED tail lights with smoked lenses and the model designation in black make the new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS models appear even wider and sportier. The unadulterated Porsche sound blasts out from the black tailpipes of the standard Sport Chrono Package pounding the eardums.

Carmine Red is offered for the first time on the GTS model and helps to accentuate the new highlights.

The new top models are the first mid-engine two-seaters from Porsche to be certified according to the Euro 6 standard and with this measuring method they achieve an overall fuel consumption of 8.2 L/100 km with PDK and 9.0 L/100 km with manual transmission.

The Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS combine top driving dynamics with undiminished ride comfort and exclusive features. The Sport Chrono package not only offers a digital & analogue stopwatch for recording lap times but also offers a firmer setup for the engine, chassis and gearbox. The Sport Plus button gives the option of a harder damper setting and more direct steering response. In short, it delivers a pure driving feel and combined with PASM as a standard feature, enables the driver to switch between progressive sportiness and long-distance comfort at the press of a button.

P O W E RThe new GTS models have Fine-tuned 3.4 litre flax 6 cylinder engines respectively with an additional 15 hp (11 kW). Giving the Boxster GTS 330 hp (243 kW), and the Cayman GTS 340 hp (250 kW). Torque has also increased by 10 Nm in each model (370 Nm for the Boxster GTS and 380 Nm for the Cayman GTS). Both models have Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) as well as VarioCam Plus.

I N S I D E P A C K A G EBlack leather is supplemented by accents in Carmine Red or Rhodium Silver. GTS logos embroidered on the headrests are in the contrasting colour along with the dial face of the rev counter, selected decorative seams, PORSCHE floor mat logo and additional accents on the edges of the seatbelts.Carbon inserts are used for the dashboard, doors and centre console.

After more than a decade, Porsche is returning to the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2014; and to the toughest race of all: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Our strategy? The same one that we employ when developing every Porsche – start from scratch, scrutinize every last detail and leave the past behind.

Matthias Müller, Chairman of Porsche AG: “Crucial in the development of the Le Mans prototype were the newly created and revolutionary racing rules for this class as they relate to energy efficiency. In 2014, it will not be the fastest car that wins the World Endurance Championship series and the 24 hours of Le Mans, rather it will be the car that goes the furthest with a defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that carmakers must overcome. The 919 Hybrid is our fastest mobile research laboratory and the most complex race car that Porsche has ever built.”

The exceptional efficiency of the Porsche 919 Hybrid is the result of a carefully balanced overall concept. The sum of all of its individual components forms an effective unit: from the combustion engine to the energy recovery systems, chassis and running gear, aerodynamics and

driver ergonomics. The combustion engine is a compact V four-cylinder petrol engine that also serves as a loadbearing member in the chassis. It is a frontrunner of the future-oriented downsizing philosophy; features two litres of engine displacement, direct fuel injection and monoturbocharging the engine that turns at speeds up to 9000 rpm. The compact engine outputs around 500 hp.

In addition, the Le Mans prototype has two energy recovery systems. Fundamentally new here is a system that recovers thermal energy from exhaust gases via an electric generator driven by the exhaust gas stream. The second hybrid system has the functionality familiar from the 918 Spyder. Here, a generator on the front axle utilises braking phases to convert kinetic energy into electric energy. Lithium-ion batteries serve as the energy

“We are trail-blazing at the moment and it’s early days.”

storage medium. When the driver needs this energy, an electric motor drives the front axle. This makes the 919 Hybrid temporarily an all-wheel drive vehicle.

A new Porsche team of over 200 employees was formed to develop and implement the Le Mans prototypes at the development centre in Weissach. Friedrich Enzinger, Head of LMP1: “Within two and one half years we built the infrastructure, assembled our team and put this highly complex race car on wheels. We have the greatest respect for the lead our competitors have in racing experience. Our objective in the first year is simple: to finish races and be competitive.”

Romain Dumas (France), Neel Jani (Switzerland) and Marc Lieb (Germany) will share driving duties in the Porsche 919 Hybrid with starting number 14. Car number 20 will be driven by Timo Bernhard (Germany), Brendon Hartley (New Zealand) and Mark Webber (Australia).

“The aim is to combine the most efficient combustion engine possible withthe maximum recovery potential and the most effective hybrid system.”

Driving the recently unveiled 919 Hybrid, Mark returns to Le Mans this year to lead Porsche’s new World Endurance Championship campaign.“I have had a long, long career… I have had incidents along the way and that’s part of the game, to get back off the canvas and go again.Le Mans was actually the making of me because it made my career, making me start again back into single-seaters. So those shunts actually played a role in me achieving a lot more things.”Webber says he has no regrets

leaving F1 for WEC and is ready for the new challenge posed by the 2.0-litre V4 petrol-electric hybrid all-wheel-drive 919.“The car is quick, it’s enjoyable to drive with that level of down force and technology.” Webber said. “Its performance is pretty impressive. We are on such a learning curve with it at the moment even driving technique, all those types of things. The driver is in the loop in terms of how we use the technology, how we get the recovery off the car in terms of all the battery technology, how we use the hybrid in certain parts of the lap.”

Jamie’s first experience of our ’76 classic 911 Targa was cramped in the back helping to navigate in classic rallies; although we soon realised that navigation was not her strong point as she fell asleep counting road signs.

She made it quite clear that if she was going to follow our footsteps with classic rallying that she was only interested in being a driver. As soon as she got her Learner plates, she was determined to start learning in a manual, even though she has an automatic car waiting for her when she gets her Provisional plates. She’s not interested in that car at all.

She wants to be driving our classic Porsche. With this in mind, we booked her into a driver training day at Marulan where she learned about road safety, driving etiquette and how to handle the lines of the track, car positioning and braking points. This really boosted her confidence and she couldn’t wait to start driving to school; although it probably wasn’t the smartest move on our part, as needless to say, she now has a lot of interest from boys.

No matter how hard it is driven, over what surfaces or how many love taps the normal wear and tear of life on the road delivers, your Porsche deserves more attention than the standard vehicle.

Sadly, no matter how much care you take time will inevitably take its toll and after a few years, your Porsche begins to look slightly less magnificent than when it was first on the showroom floor. Unavoidable? Not at all. In fact, with the right attention and expert care, your Porsche can be restored to ‘showroom condition’ with a minimum of fuss and cost.

Porsche Rejuvenation Packages put your Porsche through the full treatment - both inside and out with Permagard paint protection - a treatment developed by the aviation industry and used by Qantas, Virgin and major international airlines to maintain aircraft appearance and reduce maintenance.

What is the rejuvenation process?Extensive cleaning of the surface to remove all contaminants before it is assessed by a technician to ensure all micro-scratches, swirls and marks are filled in.Paintwork can now be re-sealed and restored to showroom condition. Yearly application will maintain your Porsche in its original condition.

How does it work? The coating creates a unique plasticised barrier. Unlike wax or polish it molecularly bonds to paintwork leaving a glass-like finish, which prevents oxidising and fading while protecting paint from common contaminants such as bird lime, tree sap, UV rays and acid rain.

STEWART BUDD

PORSCHE SALES CONSULTANT

around NSW, attending most of the V8 touring car races including the Bathurst 1000. He really sparked my interest in motorsport.

On my 16th birthday I got my Learners Licence, and on my 17th my Provisional Licence and so on; I was very eager to drive!

I had my first car, a white VL commodore planned out well before I even had a licence. I eventually got that white VL – and loved every moment!

I then moved on to Japanese cars. I had a pair of Toyota AE86 Levin Sprinters and got heavily involved in track day events; including circuit racing and drifting.

Whilst I was driving a low powered 4 cylinder AE86 my friends were driving high powered Nissans (Silvia’s/Skylines) and it wasn’t long before I caught the turbo bug and followed suit. I bought a Nissan 180sx and began enjoying more than double the power of my AE86s.

There may have been a few slight licensing point issues along the way, which led me to buy a very sensible French hatchback.

ow long have you been with PCW and why do you like working for the Porsche brand?

I began washing cars at Land Rover in Artarmon at a young age and from there ended up in sales for Land Rover in Alexandria. I stayed with the Land Rover brand for 5 years before making the shift to Porsche.

I started at Porsche Centre Willoughby nearly 2 years ago and in that time have been lucky enough to welcome the new 981 series Boxster/Cayman, 991 Series 911 and am eagerly awaiting the new Porsche Macan.

I like working for Porsche because I have a strong passion for cars and motorsport. I am only just dipping my toe into this remarkable German brand but every day at Porsche Centre Willoughby I’m becoming better acquainted. Maybe one day I’ll even add a Porsche to my own ownership list.

What is your motoring background?Every child blames their parents for their flaws and I’m no exception. My father started brain washing me at a very young age by taking me

A Renault Sport Clio 197 R27 that I quickly set about modifying into a not so sensible French hatchback for track day events. It was soon, low, loud and bumpy and I ended up keeping the Clio for 3 years doing over 80,000kms, numerous track days, a driving tour of Tasmania following the Targa route and every winding road in NSW.

As good as the Renault was I have always loved V8 Holdens; so I have now ended up with a 500hp V8 Holden SS ute and I love it; even when I do end up spending my pay checks on fuel!

When did you first become interested in Porsche?I have always been into the road going racecar 911s like 964/993 RS’s and loved the 997 GT3s but I didn’t really become interested in the brand as a whole until I drove my first 987 Cayman S: a trade-in whilst working at Land Rover. I couldn’t believe the amount of grip the mid engine coupe had!!

It was then a long wait before I got to drive another Porsche but I was already hooked.

I had just started at Porsche Centre Willoughby when Sean Lygo (General Manager) sent me to Mt Cotton, QLD to the Porsche Sport Driving School for training. There I drove every model and was blown away by them all. The 981 Boxster and 991 Carrera S (both current models) especially impressed me as they had only just been released when I completed my training.

The absolute highlight of the day was when V8 supercar/Porsche Carrera Cup driver Steven Richards explained how to drive on a wet skid pan while holding the car sideways (drifting), something I was very familiar with. When it was my turn Steven was only in the passenger seat for 2 corners before saying.. “I see you have done this before. Just let me out so I can explain it to the others.”

What can we typically find you doing on your weekends off?Weekends will always start by going out for breakfast as it is my favourite meal. Then usually something involving one of 3 things: cars, friends or family… and usually in that order.

“Every child blames their parents for their flaws and I’m

no exception. My father started brain washing me at a very young

Unlike the early days when Porsche offered a single 356, the current Porsche model range is very comprehensive. With 5 models and a 6th on the way, the combined range gives you a choice of over 40 variations.

Driving the Range is a bi-annual event where the lucky participants drive a range of Porsches from PCW up to the Hunter Valley and back to experience the different models and help choose one that is right for them.

Shadforth Financial Group teamed up with PCW to provide one of our exclusive Driving the Range experiences for fourteen of their existing and potential clients.

The day began at 8.00am with light refreshments being served at PCW. After settling the paperwork, a brief lesson on all things Porsche and a run-down of the day given by our Dealer Coordinator Ben Drew; the drivers couldn’t wait to jump into their first Porsche. Provided on loan from Porsche Cars Australia, these included a Black Panamera Turbo, a Black Cayman, a Platinum Silver 911 Carrera S, a White Panamera S, an Agate Grey Boxster S, a White Cayenne S Diesel and a Rhodium Silver Cayman S.

Turning right out of PCW and heading north along Willoughby Road, we took a sharp left, cut through the back streets to meet up at Artarmon, then continued onto the Lane Cove Tunnel/M2. Following the M2 west we continued out towards Windsor, finally making our way onto our favourite stretch of bitumen – The Putty Road.

After approximately 60kms of city and country driving, we pulled over for our first pit stop. It was plain to see the excitement of the participants as they mingled, exchanging words of praise, appreciation and even surprise at what they had just driven; and we’d only just begun our trip!

Changing drivers, we continued through the winding stretches of the Putty Road and before we even had a chance to let the Porsches loose we arrived at our next pit stop. We could see their grins growing wider as the participants became accustomed to how the Porsches maneuvered, sticking to the road like glue.

This time after swapping cars and drivers, we headed off towards our final

pit stop before lunch: Howes Valley Creek. By Now we were in full swing on the Putty

Road; twisting and turning with the sound of 7 Porsches in sports mode piercing the quiet countryside.

After our 3rd pit stop and driver change we turned right onto Milbrodale Road towards Broke/Cessnock. A few quick lefts and rights brought us to our lunch destination: Roberts Circa 1876 – The Hunter Valley’s premier gastronomic experience.

“My focus at Roberts Circa 1876 is to close the gap between what the earth provides and what I create with

that bounty. You can see the paddock that your food came from just beyond your plate at Roberts” – Executive Chef George Francisco.

After a mouth-watering lunch, we changed cars and drivers again to begin our journey back to PCW, but the fun wasn’t over just yet! Driving through Cessnock we made our way south towards Wollombi. Turning left onto Great North Road, we twisted and turned our way through pit stop No.5 at Laguna and No.6 at Kulnura.

Confidence levels were at an all-time high and as the turns in the road got sharper, the excitement on the drivers’ faces was easy to see. From the models on offer the most popular were the Cayman and Cayman S with the most surprising being the Panamera S and Turbo; no one could quite believe a car so big could handle and corner with the grace and agility of a 911.

Unfortunately due to some timing issues we were unable to continue down the Old Pacific Highway but instead had to head home with haste along the Pacific Motorway/M1. The highway driving proved very different from the winding, twisty roads of the Hunter Valley and showed our guests another dimension to the Porsches they had just been driving.

We arrived back at PCW just as the sun was setting over Sydney. Handing back the keys of the Porsches, there was a hint of sadness that the day was at an end and the reality of rush-hour traffic and everyday life set back in. We only hope that now everyone has settled back into their routines, they still smile when they remember their excitement with Porsche on our Driving the Range experience.
