PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

PINCH ME, AM I JUST DREAMING?It is such an honor to preside over this

tremendously successful region. We have so many successes that it seems like a dream come true.

May opened up with the Stick n Paddle DE event. Being the track rat I am, I couldn’t resist, went there and cleaned out the cobwebs in the tailpipe of my Boxster S. It was great to get back on the track and feel those g-forces. It was also so fun to see longtime friends I’ve developed over the years in the club. Those friendships and comradery are so important. At “Beer 30,” On-Site Tires held its annual barbeque, grilling sausages of numerous meats and varieties. Thank you On-Site Tires! https://on-sitetires.com/

Our monthly social was sponsored by John Whetzell, owner of Black Mountain Motorworks. https://www.blackmountainmotorworks.com/ If you haven’t been there before, you need to go by and say hello. This exotic car storage, sales and detailing facility was a longtime dream of John’s. It came to fruition last year. If you want to see some really high-end exotics, are in the market for one, or want a first-class detailing of your car, please see John – and tell him thank you for being one of our sponsors.

Due to our success of our autocross program, we added an autocross in May – called the “Pushin’ Petals” Autocross, chaired by Gail Chase. The title of the event got a little controversial where some believed the title contained a misspelling rather than a humorous play on words. However, that little controversy made the title just that much more fun. Pushin’ Petals was quite successful. We thank Gail and her team for putting on such a tremendous event and look forward to “Pushin’ Petals” next year.

We had yet another sold out tour. Holly Jackson again hit it out of the park with the Foothills Tour traversing our beautiful foothill roads ending in Idaho Springs. The tours are becoming among our most popular events.

At the New Member Social last March, I was approached by RMR member Scott Pedram. He explained to me that he was also an Audi club member and had been appointed to the Audi Board. He is now President of Audi Club North America - Rocky Mountain. Scott is in the process of building the Audi Club into a top-rate, successful program. Scott was so impressed with what we have done at RMR, that he asked me whether we would mentor him. It is a tremendous compliment to be asked to be a mentor. I readily accepted (as did the rest of the Board).

In the PCA National Bylaws, there are several stated objectives that regions should accomplish. One of the objectives is: “The establishment of such mutually cooperative relationships with other car clubs as may be desirable.” It makes a lot of sense to create a strategic relationship with the Audi Club. Porsche and Audi are under common ownership (Volkswagen). One of our sponsor dealers sells both Porsche and Audi under the same roof (Prestige). Many of our members own an Audi as well as a Porsche. We see a lot of potential of cross marketing. So, we are moving forward developing this strategic relationship with the Audi Club. You will see in the coming months more reference to Audi events in HighGear and otherwise. Audi will be doing the same. Scott has already been a tremendous help to our programs volunteering for events and sharing methods of their own events. We are looking forward to a long, mutually beneficial relationship with the Audi

Club. Take a look at the Audi Club’s website when you get a chance. https://audiclubna.org/rocky-mountain/

… And here’s the topper for the month: Pirelli Tires is a strong sponsor of PCA’s HPDE program. Every year, Pirelli gives an award to the top DE program nationally. This year, it is RMR! We have been recognized as the top PCA HPDE program nationally. John Krecek, PCA National DE Chair, explained that the reasons for the award include - the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved, our focus on safety, a long list of best practices that we continue to share with other regions, our contributions to the National DE program, and our efforts to continue to “raise the bar.”

There are many people who contributed to our winning this award. The Board will be recognizing all these volunteers in the near future. Without taking away from the contributions of these many people, I want to especially thank the leadership of our HPDE program, without which this award would not have been possible. Our visionary Dan Carlson, Lead Chief Driving Instructor, along with his team of CDIs Doug Bartlett, Joe Bank, Tommy Dean, Vicki Earnshaw, Hap Henderson, Scott Henderson, Brian Leary, Cecil Morris, Dave Stribling, and Chris Sulley were instrumental in receiving this award. I also want to thank Brian Lay and Vicki Cox-Jones who were the Board officers in charge of our HPDE program. Brian and Vicki had the foresight and strength to encourage and support the actions of “Team Dan.”

Can it get any better? We’ll find out in June. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our events!

JUNE IS FULL OF BEAUTY!If you lived here in Colorado for a

few years and have experienced a few Spring days, you know what I am talking about. There is nothing prettier than snowcapped mountains with blue skies, green grass and flowers blooming. This also makes a great backdrop for pictures of your car, taking pictures of other people’s cars, and being outside attending car shows.

Once again, I have decided to enter the Concours d’Elegance to have my car be seen by all guests and to have it judged by the club. I also will be at the RMR-PCA booth. Hopefully I will see many of you at the show! It is always a great show with many different cars to see. As in the past, I know Porsche owners come out in force!

I want to remind members to watch for the emails and to watch the calendar

on our website for the latest info on our events all year long. Not only do we have events in Denver, but we have tours that go well into the mountains and the Western Slope. Additionally, we have two socials in Fort Collins this summer.

I would really like to find someone in areas of Colorado that are not so close to Denver that would like to work with me to set up a social event or two each year in your area. I would really like to have someone from the Grand Junction or surrounding area volunteer. If you live in Grand Junction or surrounding area and would like to maybe volunteer, please send me an email! We can discuss any questions you may have. I know there are members who have asked for this! Let’s work together to get a social gathering together!

Name badge anyone? If you are a new member and haven’t sent me an email to get your name badge, please do so! I just need to know how you want your name to show and if you want pin back or magnetic back. It is just that easy!

Drive Happy!

BIDS FOR KIDS 2019 — AN EVENING IN THE PINES WHAT: 42nd Annual Denver Round Table : Bids for Kids WHEN: Saturday, August 17, 2019 WHERE: “Haven in the Pines”, Castle Pines, CO EVENT CHAIR: Steve Wright at [email protected]

It’s that time again. The 42nd Annual Denver Round Ta-ble Bids for Kids fundraiser is fast approaching. This year’s event promises to be a truly unique experience.

First, we have moved the event forward from our nor-mal September/October timeframe.

Save the date, because it’s all happening on Saturday, August 17th, 2019.

This year, we are at a fabulous new locale. It is a pri-vate 20,000 square foot estate located in Castle Pines. “Haven in the Pines” was developed to offer a unique space for worthwhile charities. Only a few select groups have received an invitation to hold their event here, and

Bids for Kids is one of those groups! As an added bonus, this year’s event will be emceed by Denver 7 Chief Meteorologist, Mike Nelson.

Our event benefits two special organizations: The Chil-dren’s Colorado Adaptive Recreation for Childhood Health (ARCH) program and Ridgeview Academy.

ARCH provides recreational resources and programs for children, teens and young adults with physical dis-abilities. By focusing on individual abilities, this pro-gram helps kids develop skills that lead to a lifetime of healthy leisure and awareness.

Started in 1967 to help individuals with amputations get involved in downhill skiing, ARCH was one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. The first group of ARCH skiers included young patients from Children’s Colorado and veterans from the Vietnam War being treated at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Today, there are programs all over the world based on their current model.

Ridge View Academy has cared for, counseled and educated over 7000 court-adjudicated and at-need young men, helping them to make positive, lasting change in their lives. Funds raised support scholar-ships and small grants needed to restart their lives on a better path.

RMR has been a loyal sponsor of the Denver Round Table Bids for Kids event for many years. The Rocky Mountain Region Jaguar Club is also co-sponsor of this year’s event. There will be a number of “interest-ing” cars on display as well.

If you would like additional information, to register, or to donate, please go to www.denverroundtable.net and follow the Bids for Kids link.

Hope to see you there!

TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

Look high and long through the windshield and around the corner.

Any questions?

This sounds simple, but it’s a driving fundamental that’s a challenge for some, and that’s why I want to emphasize it.

On the track, high and long vision promotes safe and smooth driving, and smooth is fast!

On the road, this applies as much or even more (well, not smooth is fast), and this edition of Track Talk should be required reading for your entire family!

Why? Think about the benefits.

• Benefit #1 - Safety : Just like on the track, by looking far down the road you’ll become much more aware of vehicles off to the side, slowed or stopped traffic, hazardous road conditions, or an object in your lane.

• Benefit #2 - A Smoother Ride : That’s right, just like on the track. The ride for everyone will be much more enjoyable, you’ll get better gas mileage by not hitting the gas as often and as aggressively - you’ll probably coast more, and you’ll be easier on the brakes; all of this promotes a smoother ride and less wear on your vehicle. Also, you will more quickly notice the fastest moving lane when dealing with slowed, stalled, or merging traffic.

• Benefit #3 - No Speeding Tickets! : By looking long, you’ll see the speed traps well in advance. BTW, I am NOT promoting speeding!

• Benefit #4 - In the Long Run, Cheaper Insurance : Better driving leads to fewer accidents and tickets.

• Benefit #5 - Your Family May Actually Enjoy Riding with You! : Enough said on this one! ☺

Here are some quick reminders…

• Similar to skiing the bumps, look at least 3 to 5 cars ahead of you. Look through the windows of the car in front of you to see ahead. While doing this, you constantly have to be aware of the vehicle in front of you, and keep a safe distance.

• When planning to take a turn, look around the corner just like we do on the track.

• Having “active eyes” also falls into this discussion. Awareness of your surroundings, mirrors, speedometer, and other gauges are so important.

In the last three issues I’ve covered critical driving principles to better prepare you for this track season – Braking and Corner Entry, Car Balance, and now Vision. Good luck with your journey perfecting them!

DRIVING TIP OF THE MONTHHere’s another Dan equation:

A good street driver ≠ a good track driver.

A good track driver = a better street driver.

Come out to an Autocross or High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) and see for yourself!

Several dozen northern Colorado and southern Wyoming members of Rocky Mountain Region gathered on Saturday morning, May 11th, for breakfast at the First Watch Restaurant in Fort Collins. The gathering and subsequent tour were organized by Thomas Matza and Erik Torkilson.

King Clemons stopped by to chat about his 800,000-mile 356A, but Frank Barrett had the oldest car on the event, a ‘65 912.

After stuffing ourselves we toured north to the historic site of Ted’s Place north of Laporte. From there we drove upstream along the St. Vrain River, south over the mightily curvaceous County Road 127 through Stove Prairie, then down Rist Canyon, around Horsetooth Reservoir, and through Masonville, ending up at The Dam Store on the Big Thompson River.

It was a great success!

TRACK PERSONALITIES

TOM AND MARISA RADOW-THE NEXT GENERATIONby Lynda Love

RMR’s Autocross School is an annual event intended to introduce RMR members to the thrills of high-performance driving on an autocross course. The school was held at Front Range Airport in Watkins on April 27th and 28th. For RMR member and PCA instructor Tom Radow, this year’s Autocross School was important for a different reason: It represented the first time his 16-year old daughter Marisa could participate in a PCA-sanctioned motorsport event.

It’s important to self-admitted “car guy” Tom that his daughter Marisa follow in his footsteps. But how to do that? Tom decided a manual transmission and sweat equity would be part of the answer. Tom wrote, “When Jill and I were deciding what kind of car for Marisa’s first car, the first thing we agreed on was a manual with two doors. I found a well-maintained 2000 BMW 323Ci on cars.com. Marisa changed the brakes and rotors, the cooling system, idlers, and belt. She did most of the work with me advising. It was hot and the job sucked!”

In addition to having Marisa able to work her way around a car, Tom also wanted to make sure she could drive it. He wrote, “I did a lot of things in the ‘68 Firebird Convertible I bought with a blown motor when I was 14 that I wouldn’t try today. I was fortunate. Some friends weren’t. I don’t want my daughter to be one of those statistics, so Jill and I put her through MasterDrive. After Marisa took Street Survival in October, she whispered that she thinks it made her a better driver. I’m hoping she likes autocross (and DE when she turns 18).”

For months in advance, Tom knew he and Marisa would attend the Autocross school. The day arrived and Marisa was excited and nervous. The morning of the two-day event taught car control via three exercises: a slalom, a skid pad and a triangle. Marisa worked with instructors Vicki Cox-Jones and Lisa Bryan during the morning exercises. “I think she was a little nervous at first, that is natural. She did all the exercises very well.” Vicki wrote. “She listened to instruction and took directions better than many.” Marisa’s favorite exercise was the slalom.

An informal untimed autocross followed in the afternoon. Instructor Brian Love said that Marisa was eager to learn but experienced some frustration when she hit the cones. During Beer Thirty that afternoon, other school participants tried to increase her confidence by regaling her with stories

of epic wipeouts where many cones went f lying (this author included!). In response, Marisa seemed somewhat overwhelmed, but also determined. She told me she wanted her own helmet.

The next morning, Tom and Marisa were back for the real (timed) autocross. It seemed like everyone there wanted to take Marisa under their wing. Vicki Cox-Jones wrote, “I talked with her a little on Sunday before the AX started. I said the key is to be able to look ahead to your next gate, look over your shoulder if you have to.”

Brian Love worked with Marisa during the morning autocross runs. He noticed an increase in her confidence, which increased her enthusiasm. Vicki Cox-Jones noticed too: “It was so much fun watching her get so excited when her times got better and better. She would run over and look then run back and tell me how many seconds she lost from the previous run.”

During the afternoon runs, SCCA member (and frequent RMR autocross participant) Aaron Botnick worked with Marisa. Aaron wrote, “My first lap in the car with her, I just helped navigate so I could see where she needed some help and she wound up setting her fastest run of the day, which obviously made her ecstatic! Before each run, I’d ask her what she was going to work on that time around…only looking for one thing, as trying to change too many things can lead to confusion. She had much better control of the car through the final slalom on the last run.”

After the school, Tom wrote about his daughter Marisa, “I know Marisa went into the event feeling very nervous being the only kid. While I wasn’t surprised by how nice everyone was to Marisa at the autocross, I am grateful, and I know she is too. The beauty of autocross is I am competing with myself. Marisa on the other hand is competitive. She has been a competitive figure skater since she was four. She can’t wait to beat me at my hobby.” He also said, “I read that kids today don’t care about cars.” But everyone who mentored Marisa at the autocross school hopes that’s wrong-- they hope that a member of the next generation will become hooked on motorsports. Tom Radow agreed. He wrote, “I think just about everyone reading this article who participates in a performance driving event became a smarter driver on the street because of what they learned from the club.”

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

I grew up in various eastern seaboard states, spent most of my working years in the Midwest, and am now “retired” to the Mountain West. With each move, you are faced with lots of new terminology both regional and local. Zone 9 PCA covers both sides of the Rocky Mountain range from the Bonneville Salt Flats to the West and the Colorado Plains to the East. From North to South, our regions span from the Idaho to the Mexico border. The spine down the middle of much of the zone is the Rocky Mountains. Coloradoans along the east edge of the Rockies say they live on the “front range.” But here in Salt Lake City we say that we live along the “Wasatch front”- the west side of the local Wasatch Range. Oddly, those living on the east side, deeper into the Rockies, refer to their loca-tion as the “Wasatch back.” This month’s “In The Zone” is all about the Wasatch front, my local turf, and home to the only region in the zone to be completely located west of the Rockies.

Spats of winter weather have continued to tease the arrival of spring here in Utah. Our first off-road tour of 2019 was changed to a paved road tour due to roads not yet open due to conditions. I guess the good news is that lots more participants joined the tour with their low clearance Porsches. Called the “Pony Express Tour,” members of IRP-

CA made stops at various points along the original Pony Express route. The tour fin-ished up at the Bonneville Brewery just south of the famous lake - in a town called “Tooele.” Remember, I mentioned the lo-cal terminology. Well Tooele is found just west of the Oquirrh Mountains. Yeah…just try to pronounce either one these. Here’s a tutorial. Tooele = too-ill’-ah. Oquirrh = Oak’-er! Welcome to the Wasatch Front!

We got lucky on May 3 and 4 with our first track days at Utah Motorsports Cam-pus. PERFECT weather! We were delight-ed to welcome drivers from Idaho, Mon-tana, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, and even as far as Mexico City! We had lots of new first-time PCA members, several of which are hooked and heading down the slippery slope. If you are reading this and you are from east or south of the Rockies, we really want you guys to come have some fun at UMC (formerly known as Miller Motor-sports Park). It’s a fantastic facility with four track configurations, ranging from 2.1 to over 4 miles; great facilities with grand-stands and rental day garages. If you’ve not come this direction for a track event, please consider joining us in the future. Our cal-endar can be found at www.irpca.org.

I’ve learned in traveling throughout the zone that we have stellar Porsche dealerships wherever I go. The Intermountain Region is

no different. We get fantastic support from both dealers in the region - Porsche of Lehi and Porsche Salt Lake City. So while I’m focused on my “home” region this month, I want to call your attention to the current issue of Panorama (#746). There’s a special 3-page article on Larry Moulton and Randy Yates. Larry and Randy are Porsche Mas-ter Technicians who collectively share 88 years of employment at Porsche Salt Lake City. Larry, at 74 years of age and with 53 years with the dealer, was recently awarded the “Technician Tenure Award” at a spe-cial ceremony. The award was presented personally by Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. A special IRPCA Cars and Coffee is being organized here in early June to allow club members to also recognize Larry for his tenure and accomplishments. I expect that many of our longtime PCA members will have some fun stories to tell about their in-teractions over the years. Congratulations to Larry and Randy for their tenure work-ing on Porsche cars and also to Porsche Salt Lake City for being THAT kind of employ-er!

Up next month - “South of the Rockies”- a focus on the lower third of the zone.

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

Have you watched “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” on Netflix? I gotta tell you, I really enjoyed the series.

For what it’s worth, I go way back with Formula 1. I’m old enough to remember Henry N. Manney III’s idiosyncratic race reports in Road & Track. They came months after the actual races. No matter. They were full of insights and witticisms, transporting a budding car nut to iconic lands, tracks and people. How did an American get a job like that? Years later, when I spent a year in Switzerland, I came to realize what actually happens. Someone you know asks you. Ultimately, it’s that simple.

Then there were the telecasts of the Monaco GP on Wide World of Sports. The only race televised in the US for years. It too was delayed. But the wait was worth it. Commentary by the Wee Scot. I can still picture the scene of Lorenzo Bandini’s crash, just down from the tunnel. I was watching with my father. We started yelling at the screen … where are the “pompiers?”

Then came live telecasts. The amazing reality of being able to watch it all, in real time, from the comfort of one’s TV room. My most memorable moment? Yes, it’s so sad. Senna. Imola. Yelling at the screen, again, for the helicopter that had landed on the track to lift off and take him to care. Do you remember? The chopper just sat there, seemingly forever. And you knew, you just knew, the outcome. And now we can just DVR the race, practice, each round of qualifying … and watch whenever we want.

What’s missing? My take is anything, and I mean anything, that’s really revealing from behind the scenes. You know there are all sorts of machinations going on. Political. Mechanical. The pressure. The crises. How much gets on the air? Just about zippo. Despite the fact that the Euro-based telecasts these days feature some of the most knowledgeable people around.

I mean, Damon Hill? Martin Brundle? Johnny Herbert? I understand Sky Sports has now also signed Jenson Button. They’ve all been there. But, what do we get? I’ll tell you what we get. Interviews that channel the memory of the one, the only, Chris Economaki. Remember him? His signature question: “What’s it like out there?”

Please.

To my mind, a lot changed with the documentary “Senna.” For once, we got a glimpse into the legend, the personality; his relationship with Ron Dennis and McLaren; what actually goes on at a drivers meeting; his life off the track. The film made him come alive … posthumously.

And now comes “Drive to Survive.” Which, finally, peels back the curtain on the traveling circus in ways we’ve just never seen before. Because the film is all about the “everyone else” teams, the midfield runners and back-markers, the best of the rest.

My understanding is that Fer rar i decided not to participate. So Mercedes didn’t participate, either. That’s too bad. But it sent the filmmakers to teams that never really get their due. It’s hard to run midfield, with little chance of a win, much less of a podium finish. And, in this film, it shows. It really shows.

There’s Daniel Ricciardo. He’s asked, if he had Lewis Hamilton’s car, would he beat Louis. He smiles that big grin and says yes. There’s Ricciardo’s mother, watching her son race in Australia. She’s shown fidgeting, biting her nails. Then the race ends, and you can clearly see her exhale.

There’s Carlos Sainz, Jr. He’s shown dining with his father, a living legend in Spain from his rallying days. Trying to gain his father’s, and the world’s, respect.

There’s Claire Williams. She’s shown trying to wrestle with her father’s legacy

… and her team’s … and keep from falling into financial ruin.

There’s Lance Stroll. Obviously under the thumb of his billionaire father. Trying to justify his seat by dint of his own performance.

There’s Esteban Ocon. Trying to hang on to his own seat, against the bigtime funding for Sergio Perez that’s coming from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.

There’s Cyril Abiteboul, Managing Director of Renault Sport F1. At one moment, he says, “If you don’t perform, you’re fired.” He shrugs, and moves on.

There’s Guenther Steiner, Team Principal for Haas F1. Who says he convinced Gene Haas to go F1 racing. He’s shown, maybe too many times, trying to motivate his team. And he’s shown on the phone with Haas, giving him the bad news about how both cars dropped out of a race, because of the same pit stop errors on both cars.

There’s Ch r ist ian Hor ner, Team Principal for Red Bull. He talks about how they won four world championships, but that’s all in the past; now they need to win races, challenge the big teams.

You get the idea. There’s more, a lot more.

I understand that Ferrari may actually participate in this year’s documentary series. And, if so, Mercedes may as well. But, then again, based on Ferrari’s tumult to date, I have my doubts.

No matter. Sure, there are plenty of scenes of crashes. With the visuals slowed down, so you can watch the carbon fiber shreds scatter like buckshot. But the footage, overall, is another level up from what you see on Sundays. And so are the stories. They’re real. They really do pull back the curtain. In ways we’ve never seen before. Ever. Go see for yourself.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
