Closed Room: NS (PAKISTAN) – Jahangir Ahmed – Mansoor Arslan EW (INDIA)–Keyzad Anklesaria – Rajeshwar Tewari

The match started with both teams bidding 4S on board 1 making with an overtrick.

It was one of those boards where it is 20 HCPs against opponents19 HCPs and who ever bids get penalised. The Pakistan EW pair was in a bad 2D in open room. If West opens 1NT, East after stayman and getting 2D response would have bid 2H with weak hand or would have transferred to spades. 2S would have played better than 2D, which went 2 down. In the closed room, their partners competed to 3C with NS cards, which went 4 down giving India a gift of 11 IMPs on the board, without them doing anything great on their own.

Board 3, Dlr: South, Vul: EW

Both the tables were in 4H. In closed room, Rajeshwar Tewari got the lead of spade Jack and after winning with queen, took out the trumps in 3 rounds and played D8 and let it run. When the diamond King won, defenders could take their 2 club winners and contract was made.

In open room the contract went one down as diamond to the queen was played. That was another 12 IMPs to India.

Board 4 was a flat board both sides playing in a part game in spade.

EW of both the rooms reached the contract of 4S with near similar bidding. In the open room, South led his singleton club and partner won with Ace and gave ruff to south. South played back the DK, pinning the DQ. Declarer won with Ace and after winning tried to ruff a diamond in dummy. This got over ruffed by North, who gave another club ruff to his partner. South returned another diamond and declarer fearing a ruff by North ruffed with Ace of spade and played back a spade but did not finesse the queen going 2 down in the contract.

In the closed room, South also led his singleton club but North after winning with Ace did not give ruff to partner and instead led back his singleton diamond. Declarer won with Ace and ruffed a diamond, which got over-ruffed by North. Now North gave a club ruff and like in open room, the diamond return was ruffed with Ace, and DJ was discarded on the heart Ace. Declarer now took the spade finesse to score his contract and gain 11 IMPs on the board.

The next three boards fetched few IMPs for Pakistan but they again gave away 6 IMPs on board 9.

In the open room, after a competitive bidding, EW purchased the contract in 3C. South led the HK, declarer discarding a spade from dummy. He now led a diamond and when south played low, he put the D9, which was unexpectedly won by North’s Jack. Heart was continued and the HT brought down the queen, declarer ruffing in dummy and playing another diamond. South won with the King and knowing that diamonds are going to get established, played the S10, which declarer ran to his queen. Declarer was now able to discard his spade loser on HJ and the contract was made with an overtrick.

In the closed room, helped by the pre-emptive 3H by North, East (Keyzad) was more aggressive with 3NT call. He received the HK lead and he discarded D6 from dummy and after winning with Ace, played back a spade, winning with SA after south gave S10. Now declarer played another spade towards his spade 8, South winning with SK. Not wanting to give a free heart trick (East can have 4 hearts, as North’s 3H does not guarenty 5 cards), South now shifted to D3 and declarer did well to put up the queen, which brough down the DJ from North. Declarer was in better control now and played back D8, South winning with King. Now South shifted to low heart and declarer won the trick and with 4 tricks in pocket, won the 4 club trick along with SQ to score his contract and gain 10 IMPs to India.

After an interesting bidding sequence at both the tables, the Pakistan EW in open room did not allow the Indian NS to play in 5C, which scores as only one heart & diamond will be lost. They sacrificed in 5H, which was duly doubled and went 2 down for 500 to NS.

In the closed room, the Pakistan NS did well to be in 4NT. Knowing that South is holding 2 checks in heart, West did well to lead the Spade Ten, but that was also not enough as declarer has to only find the DK to score 7 clubs, 2 diamonds & Ace of heart for his 10 tricks. That was a well earned 4 IMPs for Pakistan.

On board 15, the Pakistani East – West were in 1 NT making 8 tricks for +120, whereas the Indian EW overbid to 3NT going 1 down for a 5 IMP gain to Pakistan.

West led the 4th best H3 and South ducked the HQ. The continuation HK was also allowed a trick and the 3rd heart brought the Ace out. Declarer now shifted to a diamond, West discarding S8 (discouraging) and East won with the DA and played back the club for West to take 2 more hearts and 3 club tricks. The contract went 2 down for 300 to Pakistan.

In the closed room, North opted to pass out and East opened with 1D, his partner responding a heart. North nowcame into action with a double and East showed his 3-carder heart support with Re-double. South bid his best suit and after some more competition, the final contract became 3H by West.

After receiving aa club lead, playing double dummy, you can discard 2 spades on club. Play a spade. Let us say North wins with King and plays a heart back, South can won with Ace and return another heart East winning with queen and now can ruff a diamond in dummy and a spade in hand to score 5 trumps, 3 clubs and a diamond to make 9 tricks. But went one down with another line of play giving 9 IMPs to Pakistan. INDIA won the match by 50-29.

The Bangladesh pair in EW position bid the hand well to reach the slam.

The question now was to play it well. South led a low diamond and declarer won in dummy wi, discarding a heart from hand. A low trump was pulled, North winning with the Ace and returning another diamond, declarer ruffing with Spade 10. When he correctly took the trump finesse in dummy he had no problem in scoring the contract.

Other table was only in 4H, making 11 tricks for a 11 IMPs gain to Bangladesh.

In open room, after 1C-1H-1NT sequence, 2C seems to be check-back but what was 3C is not clear. But 4H was a reasonable contract. East led the D5 and West won with Ace and returned SJ declarer winning with SK and played a low heart. East tried his best by playing low but when queen was played from dummy and won the trick, it was all over. Declarer played the trump Ace and then started playing the diamonds. West could only get his 2 hearts besides the DA.

In the closed room, the bidding seemed to be going the open room way till West interrupted with 2C. But when North bid 2D and over 2H bid 3D, may be partner considered him to have 4 hearts and 5 diamonds. System permitting, North could have bid 3D showing 5-5 or could have raised partner’s 2H to 4H. In fact partner made things easy for him by bidding 4D, asking him to choose 4H or even 5D. Passing 4D was surely not a good bid. That was a loss of 7 IMPs to Bangladesh. On the next board Bangladesh again lost another 7 IMPs when they played the hand in both the rooms and both the contracts went down.

Closed Room:

West North East South Pass 1D 4H 4S Pass 4NT Pass 5H Pass 6S All Pass Both the rooms reached the slam but in different black colour suits. In open room, East showed his club fit by bidding 3H (opponent suit) and they could play in a 5-4 club fit.

In closed room, North made life difficult for EW by barging in with 4H. Now over 4S, 4NT was taken as “for spades” and the club suit vanished from the scene.

In open room, the lead of D6 would have defeated the contract as South takes the DA and the diamond return can be ruffed by the C10, East unable to over-ruff. But the lead was HK and declarer won with the Ace, played a club to the Ace and pulled a small diamond to his King. South won the trick with Ace and played back DJ. Declarer won with the DQ and when North could not ruff it, the location of CQ was automatically found and contract made.

In other room, with spade not breaking and declarer not going for club finesse, the contract went 2 down and that was a massive 17 IMPs swing for Bangladesh.

It was a difficult hand to bid. East could have simply passed 2NT (21-22) but with both majors it was difficult to pass. As it turned out in closed room they overshot to 3NT, which went 2 down.

In open room, the lead was D7 to DQ and Ace. Declarer played the CK, South winning with Ace and playing the DQ and a heart back. Declarer hopped up with Ace and discarded one heart from dummy on club jack and another on DJ.

Declarer now played the D10 and when North ruffed, the last heart from dummy was discarded. North could play the HK, which was ruffed in dummy. A trump to the Ace and back made sure that the contract is made. That was another 8 IMPs to Bangladesh.

OPEN ROOM: West North East South 1C 4S All Pass The lead was DK and declarer won in dummy with the Ace and played back a small club, East won with the Ace and after cashing HK, played back the diamond. West won the Jack and continued with HQ, which got ruffed and now declarer played 2 rounds of spade and ruffed his losing club in dummy to score the contract.

CLOSED ROOM: West North East South 1C 1S DBL 2S 3C 4S 5C Pass Pass 5S DBL All Pass South made his own life miserable by giving bidding scope to opponents. It would have been difficult for West to come into picture, if South directly jumps to 4S. Though 5C goes one down, but South could not resist bidding 5S, which was duly doubled for -1 and 11 important IMPs to Kuwait.

Bangladesh won the match by 50-25.

DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUES IN BRIDGE PLAYING Examples Compiled and presented by Mazhar Jafri

EXAMPLE 2: Counting declarer’s tricks to find a clear-cut defense

Bidding details 2NT is 12-14 hcps, balanced With 5

Partner leads the two clubs (4th best) and the eight is played from the dummy. Let us prepare a defense plan, taking account of the suit distribution

Normally one leads the spade jack (from KJ10 or AJ10 or J10). South captures it with the queen (Partner plays the spade six) and exits with a diamond. A simple defensive plan is: SOLUTION In this case, the plan to defend this contract boils down to counting declarer’s tricks: Three spades, five clubs (we know from the bidding that South has at least a doubleton in clubs) and a diamond if one fails to rise with the ace; just enough to make his contract.

So, one has to bet on the only chance one has – finding partner with the ace and queen of hearts. It would, however, be a mistake to lead the standard ten from his sequence, since partner may rise with the ace and play a spade. The correct card to play is the king of hearts.

In this deal, right defense consists of counting declarer’s tricks as well as anticipating any possible dilemmas our partner might have.
