Meet the Members 2

Dorothy Proctor

Dorothy has been a member of Dundee Bridge Club for almost 25 years. She took up the game after her husband died, first going to classes, some of them taught by Gavin MacDonald, and afterwards playing in what was then the Probationers Section on a Tuesday evening, often with David McLeod, and also enjoying social bridge on Saturdays. Moving from the Probationers into the “main club”, she played regularly with the late Colin Halley on Wednesday afternoons, and attended Tournament Directors’ courses at local and district level, acting as TD, also on Wednesday afternoons, for many years. She has not been in the best of health in recent months, and has given up her TD role, but hopes to return to playing again on Wednesdays in the near future.

Dorothy is also a keen participant in several U3A activities, particularly the Ukulele Group. A piano player since her youth, she now prefers the ukule-le, and performs in an ensemble of up to two dozen other pensioners at gigs around the Dundee area, including a recent sell-out concert at The Space, and a televised performance on the Frigate Unicorn. She proudly claims a reper-toire of 150 tunes. She has studied and taught floral art at night school, and is an accom-plished embroiderer, all of which keeps her very busy, but she still finds time to continue learning German and to produce some delicious home baking. A Dundonian all her life, she has twin sons who both live nearby, and a nine year old grandson. We look forward to seeing her again soon on Wednes-day afternoons.

Graham Bullock *******

Bridge, however, is only a small part of her life. She was a talented tennis player and a qualified coach who spent many years working for Dundee City Council teaching the game to generations of children, including several sons and daughters of DBC mem-bers. She also coached for 10 years at our near neighbours in Shaftesbury Road, the West End Ten-nis Club, and is still an enthusiastic follower of the game and a regular spectator at Wimbledon. After retiring from active tennis, she took up bowls at Broughty Bowling Club, and in the winter she plays a very competitive game of dominoes. Perhaps surprisingly, her other spectator sporting interest is American Football which she first discov-ered on a visit to the States some years ago.

In Response to Bruce McIntyre’s Time Saving Advice

I completely agree with all Bruce’s comments re slow play but I would like to add some cautionary observations. Generally, do not let the quest for speed blind you to correct proprieties. A few illustrations of what I mean by this advice:-

1. During the auction, you must use the Stop card to indicate when you are making a jump bid and should remove the Stop card only after an interval of approximately 5 seconds. Your left hand opponent should not make a call until the Stop card has been removed.

2. When you are declarer and have led from your own hand, do not ask for dummy’s card (even if there are no alternatives) until your left hand opponent has made his play. If you do so, your right hand opponent is permitted to play before his partner, which could be very useful to your opponents.

3. When you are defender on declarer’s right, when a card has been led towards dummy and your partner has played his card, do not anticipate what card is going to be played from dummy and have your card de-tached from your hand before you see what dummy plays. This could give declarer useful information about your remaining cards, suit distri-bution etc.

4. After play of each hand, you should agree the number of tricks made before returning your cards to the board.

A very good principle to strive to achieve appears in Law 73D.1 which reads as follows:-

“It is desirable, though not always required, for players to maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner. However, players should be particular-ly careful when variations may work to the benefit of their side. Otherwise, unintentionally to vary the tempo or manner in which a call or play is made is not in itself an infraction. Inferences from such variations may appropriately be drawn only by an opponent, and at his own risk.”

Jim Cunningham

Thanks to Jim for that advice. Several people have commented on their own ideas about slow play. One member felt too much time was wast-ed reading all the other scores on the bridgemate. The suggestion is to wait and go over the scores at home as all are available on the web. Like Jim, this member had a positive reaction suggesting a solution not just critising fellow members’ play. - Ed

A Session at The Club - Hand 4

On the eighth hand, Novice found himself in 7S which South doubled. North led a spade. Novice could see the following:

West East ♠ KJT54 ♠ AQ9 ♥ AKJT9 ♥ Q2 ♦ J2 ♦ AQ75 ♣ 3 ♣ AQ52

Novice drew trumps in three rounds, then played DA intending to give up a diamond trick and make the rest. He then remembered that he was not in 6S, but that his partner had put him in 7S. He now decided that he had better run off all his high cards and see what happened. On the third last card declarer led H9 from H9,DJ and C3. Dummy discarded DQ from DQ and C.AQ. South was hopelessly squeezed, unable to keep DK and C.KX. Whatever he discarded, Novice made the contract. “I didn’t think that Novice had ever heard of a Vienna coup,” said the ex-pert, “far less be able to execute one.”

Board Notes

At the board meeting held on 19th April the following matters were discussed: It was felt that the Board Notes could be published in the Slam as any

confidential maters were not reported. The Defibrillator has been purchased and we are waiting for dates from

Heartstart for training (see P1 for dates) Bar training books had been purchased and anyone wishing to help the

club by providing bar service in Neil’s absence was welcome to speak to Susan.

TD training is being organised (see P11 for more information) The new dealing machine had been purchased but was not in service. It

was agreed that the office needed sorting as there was a lot of wasted space in the current arrangement and a proper tidy up was needed. Alice will organise a working party from the Board over the summer.

First Aid training was to be offered by SBU in order that clubs can meet the SBU requirements that a first aider is available at all SBU events. This is being done on a district by district basis so the Board await further information. We already have 3 first aiders trained at the club’s expense.

St Andrews BC have organised an interclub team event on Tuesday 2nd May. DBC received an invitation for two teams. The board decided to have criteria for this event as it was hoped to be an annual event. It was agreed that the first team would be a Vice-President’s team and if offered a second, it would either be a team organised by someone who had worked hard for the club, or thrown open to the first team to put their name on the noticeboard.

An application had been received from new member Bob Steele and this was approved.

The bar will be staffed by Board members for the Sumptuous Spread be-fore and after play. It was decided that there was no need for the bar to be open during the meal as free drinks were being served.

The Board agreed to a request from CD Education group to allow use of the premises for a proposed holiday workshop for school pupils in the Oc-tober holidays at the rate of £25 per morning

How Would You Rule?

Last month’s answers: Not really difficult, but it asks for a clear explanation from the TD.

a) The lead of the ♠10 cannot deprive the declarer of the right to ac-cept the LOOT. Accept with two options and knowing that the ♠10 has to be played. Not accept with three possibilities. There is a nice and important distinction between demanding a spade lead from West and not demanding a lead penalty. In the latter case the ♠7 has to stay on the table as a penalty card. And West has to play his card. Read carefully L50D1b. b) Now the ♠7 is a minor penalty card and doesn’t change the treat-ment of the major one in West. But please explain to East that he has to play the 7 unless he plays an honour. c) The rectification is as in a) but the TD should give West a discipli-nary penalty for acting as TD himself.

This month’s problem Answers on P13 Playing teams. East is declarer in 3NT. South wins trick 4 and leads the ♠J in trick 5.

a) East calls the TD and shows him the same ♠J in dummy. South will tell declarer that he has counted his hand and had 13 cards during the bidding. It appears that South’s ♠J is an extra card that belongs to the South hand of the board they just have played (South will help the TD to establish this fact).

b) South calls the TD and tells him that he just discovered to have 14 cards. The TD finds out that dummy has 12 cards and the ♠J in South’s hand belongs to dummy (West).

c) The same as in b), but now the TD finds out that the ♠3 in South’ hand belongs to dummy’s hand.

Christine Walker

(the answers to How Would You Rule will now be published in the same month as the questions -Ed)

West is in 3NT and the opponents take the first four spade tricks. North now leads a heart and declarer believes that his only hope is to make 4 hearts, 4 clubs and DA. But North has C.JTxx and the con-tract goes one off. Could you have done better?

My Hand of the Month

Or was that disaster of the month?

The Central District league started this month. Playing in League 2 and sitting East I am faced with this wonderful hand!

S QJT762 H 8752 D 843 C -----

The auction goes: P..P.. 2NT to me, easy Pass. My LHO now says 2C, Stayman, and my partner doubles for a lead, when RHO passes. his is the sort of problem that we play this game for. Had I mentioned that we were both vul-nerable, just to add that extra level of risk? Anyone sensible would pass again, but as most of you know that is not my style and I was expecting LHO to bid. So I bid 3S and yes LHO does bid - she doubles, all Pass. After the lead of the QC I manage to to scramble 4 tricks, 1400 down. Relying on my team to bid and make 6NT, which would make1440. At the end we score up, did they make 6NT? They have made 1700, after defending 5DX. Clearly our opponents got carried away as well. Their auction went as follows: Pass, 1S, 2NT,(5/5 in minors), Double. Now the opposing East with horrid problems, is forced to bid 3D, South says 3H, 5D, Double, all Pass. This time East manages 6 tricks for the loss of 1700. The moral of this story is that the great thing about team bridge is that your team mates are always there to bail you out. Full hand here: North ♠ A9 ♥ AT ♦ AKJ9 ♣ KJ985 West East ♠ - ♠ QJT762 ♥ 96 ♥ 8752 ♦ T7652 ♦ 843 ♣ AQT765 ♣ - South ♠ K8543 ♥ KQJ43 ♦ Q ♣ 42

(The 6S was against my partner & me. I was East but did not double in case they escaped into 6NT. 300 to us & our partners made the 6NT so match won on that hand alone - Ed)

So what should N/S do with the hand? According to Deep Finesse, even with 31 points, 6NT is the only makeable contract, but it is neither easy to bid nor easy to play, you have to get the clubs right. 4 spades only makes if played from the north hand and someone actually played it in 6 spades!

Tournament Director Training Seminar

Fancy the idea of helping run a tournament? Wanting to know what hap-pens when the TD is a called to your table? Interested in knowing the rules? Done some directing but have no official qualification? Then this seminar could be for you. Duncan Cursitor, one of the friendliest SBU TDs, is coming to DBC on Saturday 27th May to run a basic course on tournament directing. He will follow a set syllabus and have an end of course assessment covering such things as pairs & team movements, the common laws required by a Club Director includ-ing lead out of turn, revoke, penalty card(s), insufficient bid and bid out of turn. The Board are organising this course to encourage members to become TDs but wants to reassure those wishing to take part that they will not then be thrown straight into running a tournament. Even if you just want to do the course for your own information to help you understand the game better, please come along. This is the first training course in this area for a number of years and the Board are opening it up to all the other clubs in the district on a first come first served basis, so sign up as soon as possible. There will be forms available in the club and on the website. Any Board member will give you more information should you want it. Cost is only £15 for the day which includes a snack lunch and refreshments. The day starts at 10.30 and should finish around 5pm. Another day is being planned to cover how to set up and use the comput-er at DBC for collating and posting results along with a refresher course for more experienced TDs hoping to cover the new rules about to come out. Like many hobbies, Bridge keeps changing and the Board is committed to providing training and back-up to our hard working TDs. Hopefully these initiative will be well sup-ported as without TDs all our many sessions could not run.

Coming Up At DBC

Stanley Trophy

This is the Club’s mixed pairs event. There are 4 rounds and pairs must play in at least three to qualify, but all are welcome. Three rounds to go in April so still time to get involved.

Summer Pairs

Enter this event as an individual and be allocated a partner. The idea of this event is to mix experience with novice/improver to enrich everyone’s playing experience. The experienced have a chance to go back to basics without all those cunning conventions they’ve learned and the novice/improver hopes to learn a thing or two! It is always interesting to play with different partners of whatever standard and it also allows you to meet members who play on different nights from you, thus increasing the social aspect of belonging to a club. Give it a go!

******* Monday & Thursday Learning Sessions

These sessions, run by tutors & helpers, will continue throughout the sum-mer. Monday’s session is at 1.45 pm for a 2 pm start and Thursday is at 7pm for a 7.15 start. While aimed at people from the classes they also provide a learn-ing opportunity for those just out of classes. Run as competitions, they allow par-ticipants the chance to get used to play in a club and to use bridgemates. Deal sheets are available as well as chat about the hands afterwards. Results and deals are also available on the website . The Slam will publish names of win-ners. Any member wishing to help out can get in touch with Tricia Hewitt (Monday) or Helen Taylor (Thursday) This month’s results:
