FOREWORD

Millions of people hit the road each year, to get away from their old surroundings, to see and learn how people live, and meet new and old friends.

Modern travel has given millions of people an opportunity to see the wonders of the world. Thousands and thousands of dollars are spent each year on various modes of transportation. Money spent in this manner brings added revenue to tradesmen throughout the country.

The White traveler has had no difficulty in getting accommodations, but with the Negro it has been different. He, before the advent of a Negro travel guide, had to depend on word of mouth, and many times accommodations were not available.

Now things are different. The Negro traveler can depend on the "GREEN BOOK" for all the information he wants, and has a wide selection to choose from. Hence this guide has made traveling more popular, without encountering embarrassing situations.

We appreciate letters from the public telling us about places that are not listed in the "GREEN BOOK." We also welcome your comments and opinions. We are now and shall always continue to be interested in your welfare. Your cooperation will enable us to reach the summit of our goal and further our efforts in giving "ASSURED PROTECTION FOR THE NEGRO TRAVELER." • Denotes The Negro Travelers' Green Book recommended Hotel, Motels, Tourist

The publishers make every effort to assure the accuracy of the "Green Book" editorial information, and to maintain the high character of its advertising pages. We cannot however, accept responsibility for inaccuracies in editorial or advertising matter. Where rates are quoted, they are subjject to change.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS By Novera C. Dashiell

An anniversary is like a birthday. Both happy occasions tinged with expectant hopes and dreams. After twenty years in circulation there are many things to wax sentimental about in retrospect. The conception, the first stumbling steps, difficulties in adolescence, then the ripening years of maturity; when at long last the realization of fulfilment. On this the threshold of its twentieth year, the editor pledges anew to make each issue of your Green Book better than the one before. Retrospection may be for historians but since anniversaries are celebrated with a certain amount of modest pride, allow me to present to you the story of your travel guide and the man behind the book—the Green Book that is.

Our leaders and educators look forward to the day when as a racial group, we will enjoy the rights and privileges guaranteed us, but as of now withheld in certain areas of these United States. With this in mind, the idea was conceived by Victor H. Green, publisher-owner of the unique Negro Motorist Green Book about 1932. The idea crystallized when, not only himself but several friends and acquaintances complained of the difficulties encountered; oftentimes painful embarrassments suffered which ruined a vacation or business trip.

Subsequently in 1936, along with a friend, George I. Smith, the dream became a reality. The first editions were published. After two years however, Mr. Smith left the organization. William H. Green, brother of the publisher, joined the staff in 1938 and remained as editor until his death in 1945.

The first issues in 1936 of the Green Book were published locally. The demand was so great that by the following year it became a national institution. Endorsed and in use by the United States Travel Bureau, Idlewild Chamber of Commerce of Michigan; in use by the American Automobile Association and its hundreds of affiliated clubs throughout the country, Travel Bureaus, Bus Lines and other organizations. One of their greatest enthusiasts has been James A. Jackson, Special Representative of the Esso Standard Oil Co., who has used these guides, has helped it to prosper and has personally directed an all out campaign to enlighten the traveler about the numerous fine Negro business places throughout the country, at the same time while attending to his duties . . . all interested in better service to the traveling public.

A supplementary directory of summer resorts was also issued as the Green Book Vacation Guide. The Green Book which had by now become indispensable to the Negro traveller grew quickly in circulation, due to the growth of the motoring public. Summer and winter resorts which previously depended on the word-of-mouth advertising soon found it highly profitable to have a Green Book listing.

"" In 1947 the Green Book, originally known as The Negro Motorist

Green Book, A Classified Motorist and Tourist Guide, included listings covering the United States and Alaska. In 1949 it expanded its listings to Bermuda, Mexico and Canada. In 1952 it became known as The Negro Travelers Green Book. Today with listings in South America and the West Indies and future plans for European and West African circulation, it has truly become an international travel guide.

In 1947 another valuable service was extended to Green Book readers. This was the Vacation Reservation Service which enabled the public to book in advance reservations to any hotel or resort listed.

Victor H. Green, a native New Yorker, is a man of tremendous drive and energy. Retired in 1952 after 39 years of service as a letter-carrier from the Post Office Department. He is married to the former Alma Duke of Richmond, Virginia. Tall well-built, always impeccably groomed, with an easy affable manner. The Grover Whelan of our group as many visitors to his West 135th Street, New York office will verify.

The integrity with which he has always dealt with subsscribers and advertisers in the past are evident today in view of competition. Certain advertisers who cater directly to the traveling public, had at one time allowed their account to lapse. The demand for the Green Book was so persistent, that they in turn had to yield to the demands to provide the requested copies.

He regrets the shortsightedness of most of our business men to see the urgent need and value of advertising. "If Negro-owned business is good" he says, "it can be better with advertising." His philosophy is that we can create our OWN "name brands." We should) have the patience to build. Build for ourselves and the future of our children. The Green Book is the symbol of one man's patience. Today, twenty years later, it is an established business.

He deplores the apparent lack of interest among our young people in the lucrative field of advertising. The need of trained personnel is acute. He urges more youngsters to take advantage of the opportunities offered. This in turn will create greater achievements in our business ventures.

As the editor, he experiences great satisfaction and encouragement in receiving thousands of letters each year in appreciation of the Green Book. Numerous visitors come into his office to offer congratulations and to leave their orders for the following year.

In the earlier years he personally travelled across the United States to check the accuracy and conditions of places listed. Now, due to the press of business, he can no longer make as many trips but must rely on agents in the field. Incidentally, there is still a great need for new agents.

In looking ahead . . . a trip to the moon? Who knows? It may not be so improbable as it sounds. A New York scientist is already offering

for sale pieces of real estate on the moon. When travel of this kind becomes available, you can be sure your Green Book will have the recommended listings! Until then, for 1956 several things are being planned for1 your pleasure. A vacation contest, the big prize two weeks at a well known resort and other valuable prizes. A Spring and Fall edition to accommodate your vacation needs.

A Travel Bureau is maintained at the Green Book offices, 200 West 135th St., New York, N. Y. Come in or send all requests for information to Victor H. Green and Co.

"Our thanks to you for your generous support, from our first publication in 1936," says Mr. Green, "in making this effort of mine successful. Through this guide a number of white business places have come to value and desire your patronage. Without your support we could not have remained in business and no doubt would have failed as others did.

"We trust, in the future, your faith will be justified as in the past; and in so doing,, you wll tell others of your satisfaction."

" . . . TWO WEEKS WITH PAY" These are the days of itching feet and lifting of the heart. Of course,

, if you are among the luckier ones, whose lease on the seven-league boots may extend to three, four or even six weeks. In any event, we would like to offer some suggestions which may help you in planning your vacation this summer.

No matter where your destination, you will need a good basic wardrobe. Not necessarily expensive but cool, easy to pack and suitable for the type of vacation planned. Basic rule should be dark cool cottons, sheers and lightweight rayons for city wear. Pastels, gay colored prints and seersuckers for the country. The fact that these materials are quick-drying makes it easier to be always neatly groomed on the hottest day. Don't forget children's clothes need just about as much careful planning. Sunsuits for the kids should be limited to country and beach wear only.

As a tip to motorists, before you pack your bags, it is advisable to check with your car insurance agencies if you are planning trips outside the U. S., to see if coverage can be arranged.

By way of conditioning motorists for safe driving, a set of rules were laid down in a recent nation-wide campaign by the President's Committee For Traffic Safety. We should all try to follow these rules throughout the year. Particularly on a vacation.

The do's and don'ts on driving which the committee emphasized include:

Obey all traffic regulations. Be sportsmanlike with fellow-drivers. Start earlier, progress slower and keep speed reasonable. Don't drink and drive. Danger increases with darkness; cut speed at dusk to keep

within brake range of headlights. Stay in traffic lanes, do not pass without ample room and never

do so o,n hills or curves. Keep ample stopping space between your car and the car ahead. Be watchful at intersections; be sure to signal your intentions

to turn or stop. Check brakes, windshield wipers, tires and steering mechanism

before you start on that trip.

Certain states prohibit the throwing of cans, trash, garbage, refuse or rubbish of any kind along public roads or highways. Violations are misdemeanors and punishable by fine or imprisonment or both. While we are on the subject of traffic regulations for your safety, let's not forget that wherever we may visit we must behave in a way to show we've been nicely bred and was taught good manners. So don't leave these valuable commodities home. Take them with you and display them at all times. As travellers we are good-will ambassadors of our race among those who perhaps are unfamiliar with us.

For those who may wish to travel outside the continental United States, the Passport Office of the State Dept. has announced the new location of its offices. In moving to these new quarters they have reduced the time required in processing passports and credentials. The new address is: 1717 H St., N.W., Washington, D.C.

This Spring, Fall and Winter, the airlines, railroads and steamship companies are offering the tourists excellent values in "package tours." Trans World Airlines has its new "Discount Fare Plan" applicable to either first-class air travel or low-fare Sky Tourist service. This plan may also be used by groups as well as individuals.

Forty-three railroads have issued a new "Credit Card" good from coast-to-coast. This card permits credit on all member railroads for rail and Pullman tickets and for meals and refreshments on trains. Check with your travel agent or write Rail Travel Credit Agency, Room 436, Union Station, Chicago 6, 111., for further information.

For those with the seven-league boots, such as teachers, students or just the "bunch from the office"; American President Lines has added two new round-the-world freighters with excellent passenger accommodations for a global trip. The "packaged tour" plan is also available for this type of travel. Another type of "packaged tour" on the luxury lines is 10-day to three Islands: Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Kingston, Jamaica; and Havana, Cuba. Over-all price minimum $275.00. Another 14-day plan to the West Indies with visits to St. Thomas, Antigua, Martinique, Venezuela, Trinidad, Grenada and Ciudad Trujillo. Over-all price minimum $350.00.

In South America or the West Indies, of course you will have the use of automobiles in the cities or nearby outlying areas. But if you are the type who prefer to live excitingly, you'll probably wish to see what's on top of some of those beautiful mountains. The slopes of them are quite steep and other modes of transportation must be used. You will then become acquainted with the innocent-faced, sleepy-eyed donkeys or burros. These little animals are thick-skinned and self-opinionated. Thick-skinned to the abuse you may find yourself indulging in and self-opinionated in deciding when "you don't move me." However, after a few hours over a difficult trail you will grow to respect and appreciate their sure-footedness and good judgment.

Visitors to New Mexico will find little if any racial friction there. The majority of the scores of motels across the State accepts guests

on the basis of "cash rather than color." Hotels, restaurants and theater owners assert they welcome and value the Negro customers' patronage highly.

If you have seen and enjoyed the musical comedy "Plain and Fancy" you should visit Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. Here you will find the colorful people known as Pennsylvania Dutch. These "plain" people, some in the archaic but decidedly picturesque and captivating dress of the Mennonites, Amish and River Brethren. The serenity in the faces of these people shows that they truly are aware they are their brothers' keepers.

Each summer the city of New York invites the visitor and gives the plush carpet treatment. The keys to the city are offered from June through to September. The movies and the theaters offer the best in entertainment, the department stores shopping bargains; the open air concerts in the parks and Stadium, dancing On-the-Mall, all the fun and excitement especially planned to please the visitor. These eleven weeks oi' all-out vacation pleasure is packaged and known as the New York Summer Festival. Ail this end Brooklyn tool The Dodgers yet| The days of our beloved Bums may be limited over there, but in the meantime you can see the World Series Championship flag waving proudly over Ebbets Field,

Equipped with nothing more than a subway token and the price of a ferry ride, you can visit the Statue of Liberty National Monument, Bedloe's Island. Then there is Greenwich Village, just as quaint and arty in spite of the spanking new apartment buildings. Chinatown with its curio shops and oriental glamor. Times Square and Broadway, entertainment mecca of bright lights and raffish air. Fifth Avenue with its elegant stores and sleek, beautifully clad women. The horse drawn carriages in Central Park. The awesome architecture of the concrete palaces of the rich along upper Fifth Avenue. This Avenue that has withstood the clang and blare of countless parades. Pulsating, throbbing 125th Street, looking now for all the world like downtown Fifth Avenue. Dignified 135th St. where you will find the home of your Green Book, and its editor, Mr. Green to welcome you. Further up is the Polo Grounds AND Willie Mays. If you insist, there is also the Yankee Stadium, Elston Howard of course. Beyond that, in the Bronx, is the world famous grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, where thousands make their pilgrimage each year.

So instead of seeing Naples and die, see New York and live.

NATIONWIDE HOTEL ASSOCIATION The Nationwide Hotel Association's bulletin is titled "Hospitality"

and that is just what this great Negro hotel association means; plus "Service." They are organized to better serve the public—the millions of people who travel the year round for business and vacations.

The bulletin was received at our office before we went to press and we want to quote to you excerpts of an address by Mr. Dykes Brookins, national president, at a reception held at the new Dunbar Hotel, Washington, D.C. entitled, "The Challenge to the Negro Hotel Owners." "Today we are making rapid strides in the field of interracial relations. In almost every section of the country color barriers are being broken down. Segregation created the need for the Negro businessman as we know him. Negroes in the past went into business to meet the needs of our people because other businessmen did not want our business. From the beginning we planned only to serve the Negro public; we had a monopoly. As a result the Negro Businessman is not prepared to enter the market serving all people. The N H A is aware of this problem and believes that the salvation of the Negro business man and particularly in the hotel industry lies in raising standards. I am convinced the Negro traveler would just as soon stop among his own if he could get—not comparable, but fair accommodations.

Negro hotels are meeting this problem each year, the month of March is set aside as Clean Up-Paint Up Month and every member is expected to take part and make a contribution to the success of this month-long campaign. Every hotel owner is expected to make some improvement in his place.

"Some will modernize the lobby—others will install a new heating system or improve the plumbing. Some will replace old worn furniture— others will install new modern lighting fixtures. Some will put in air-conditioning—others will add private baths or install wall to wall carpeting. All are expected to go through their hotels from top to bottom with a list of items on a special form sent out from the main office, thoroughly inspect and put in first class working order.

"The month of April is set aside as Public Inspection Month, when the general public is invited to come and see the improvements that have been made.

"Yes the program of the N H A is an ambitious one," Brookins stated, but one designed with the interest of the traveling public in mind. "We want you to have confidence in us, in our program, in our abilit" to see this thing through. A confidence tempered with understanding and patience; knowing that these problems which cannot be solved overnight, are, nevertheless being given the very best attention that organization and trained minds can give them.

"We want you to patronize those establishments who are members of the NHA, because in spite of all the problems and handicaps, standards are being raised, services are being improved, buildings are being modernized and well equipped motels are being built throughout the country where they are needed.

"When you are traveling, stop at a hotel, motel or guest house that displays the NHA emblem—they are "Your friendly hosts from Coast to Coast." aq
