Our mission is to support catechists, parents and others in the Church and beyond, as they grow in their

understanding of the religious potential of children.

GREETING FROM THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR

“Remain in me and you will bear much fruit.” What a privilege it is to live these words with the children. How much they have taught us about the joy of remaining! What sweet fruit we find in the contemplation and enjoy-ment of the children with whom we share a com-mon religious experience.

Our Association serves and supports this fruitful vine. Each year we seek to prayerfully discern how our as-sociation can “remain in Him” and fulfill the beautiful mission He has placed in our hands.

This report reflects the work of the National Asso-ciation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for 2015/16. We have seen a tremendous growth and have responded with new publications, new technology, new staff and events, developed a sustainability plan for our future, and opened a new office in Urbandale, Iowa. Much has happened as we seek to meet the needs of our members and all those who have discov-ered the religious potential of the child. Let us continue to remain branches on the True Vine, filled with the life and love of God. We are intimately connected with and in the children and adults who seek to live the religious values of childhood. Let us continue to celebrate the lavish gift of our abundant fruit, our shared work and prayer. As we look back at the year that has passed, let us glorify the Father for His blessings upon us, let us learn from challenges and opportunities. Together, let us remain in Christ as we look to the future with hope and confidence.

FORMATION

The Office of Formation works to support formation leaders, hosting course sites, catechists and other inter-ested persons in “opening the eyes of the adult to the hidden riches of the child.” In 2015, we collaborated with formation leaders and hosting coordinators on 173 formation courses which trained 1938 catechists. In addition, this office coordinated several formation events including the first Spanish bi-lingual Level I Catechist Formation in Scottsdale, AZ — a two summer course in 2015 –16; the Formation Leaders’ Training Course for Level II Formation Leaders with 28 participants; and a new initiative for 18 experienced formation leaders, the Mentors Gathering, to explore ways to guide the mentor relationship with catechists in the Formation Leader Discernment Process. Our annual Servant Song Retreat in 2015 was led by catechist Kathy Finley who guided the 30 participants in an artistic way to more contempla-tively engage in seeing God’s presence in all creation. In 2015, we saw 14 newly recognized formation leaders and several long-time formation leaders retire, Suzanne Haraburd, Pam Moore, and Tricia Dodge.

MEMBERSHIP

Our members give voice to the child’s silent plea: “Help me come to know God by myself.” The mission and vision of CGSUSA is that voice in this country. In 2015, our mem-bership continued its growth to almost 2000 members. Our Membership Committee continues to reach out to prospective members and to invite current members to renew. Our membership lends credence to our witness in the world when we speak as one body: that the child has something to teach us about the encounter with God.

PUBLICATIONS

Our partnership with Liturgy Training Publications (LTP) continued in 2015 with the publishing of Drinking from the Sources: How Scripture and Liturgy Shape Our Christian Life by Sofia Cavalletti and Patricia Coulter. We now offer over 50 publications for catechists, parents, and anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of the spirituality of the child and the important work of CGSUSA. All publications are available for purchase through our website. As a benefit of membership, mem-bers received a complimentary copy of the 2015 Journal of CGSUSA, dedicated to the plenary talks given at the 60th Anniversary of CGS International Celebration held in Phoenix in 2014. As always the Journal also included children’s art, prayers, and their pearls of wisdom woven throughout the Journal.
