MV 10th Anniversary Party “1001 Arabian Nights” @ Byblos, 19/11/16
What do you do when a cute 9 year old says she wants to attend the MV party again? You cast her as a genie and fabricate a story about Scheherazade, King Shahryar, 1044 virgins and 1001 nights and call the little show “The King and I” (the non-musical and non-sense version). This was the opening act for the MV 10th anniversary party. I am not sure if the audience enjoyed the skit but the performers did – we had a great laugh. Cast: Genie – Red; Scheherazade – Effa; King Shahryar – Mariana; Narrator – Cze Yan.
We celebrated the graduation of Batches 25, 26 and 27 next. As you all know, only very intelligent people can be Museum Volunteers and 27 such special people made it this year. Apologies… we do not have a group photo of the graduates. Please see Facebook for more photos.

It is hard to believe that MV is 10 years old. To review the 10 year history of MV, we engaged a “famous” chat show host. A very suave Jean Marie Metzger hosted the J. Marie Tonight Show with special guests Karen Loh (President), Zahara (a relic from Batch 1); Junko (to represent our largest sub-group, the Japanese); Danie (to represent our largest Western group, the French).
13 MVs started joget lessons on 1 September and after 2 tough months of practise, 6 MVs (Karen; Mariana; Zaharah; Fumiko; Marutani;
Serena) transformed into Lex’s Ladies to perform the jolly joget at the MV party. The lively dance drew many to join them on the dance floor and got everybody warmed up for the next hot act – a belly dancer! The party ended as soon as the belly dancer left! Why?
Focus French Regards Croisés: “The Birth of Kuala Lumpur”, 17/11/16 By Danie Picot
On November 17, Danie took the Discovery room and impersonated Ah Cheong to tell the story of “The Birth of Kuala Lumpur”. Ah Cheong was one of the 87 Chinese miners who arrived at the muddy confluence in 1857; and was one of the 18 who survived malaria and the harsh and difficult life in the mines of Ampang, Petaling and Pudu. Ah Cheong witnessed the making of a town from a small village made of planks and thatched roof. He was there when Yap Ah Loy arrived and developed
the village. Ah Cheong avoided smoking opium, tried not to gamble too much and did not like to drink. He preferred to keep his money to visit the girls in the brothels. These girls were Chinese from Guangdong province; sold by their parents who were too poor to feed them till their marriage to another family.

Ah Cheong saw the long nosed, red faced orang putih arrive and settle on the right side of the Klang River. He was there when they built beautiful buildings for the colonial administration. And in his old age he enjoyed a stroll in High Street to visit his friends in the brand new shophouses, built to prevent fire and flood from the great Klang River, mother of the town. 60 persons enjoyed the story of “The Birth of Kuala Lumpur”.
Focus French Regards Croisés: “Malay Proverbs”, 8/12/16 By Danie Picot On December 8th, Colette Hassan gave her audience a tour of Malay Proverbs. Malay has its roots deep from the past amongst its rural folk and its sayings, Proverbs, au tours are li Kedah with earth, rice, water, sun, and everyday life. 25 persons from the French community enjoyed learning about the different names of rice: Padiham; Berkshire; nasi; Bunbury. And about the different expressions with mata: matahari; mata air; mata mata; mata gelap; silap mata; cahaya mata. Colette has a great sense of humour - she knows well how to translate a few Malay proverbs and sayings to quite the equivalent French expression. Thus she gave the audience a good understanding of Malay culture.
Coffee Morning, 8/12/16 The next MV training programme is scheduled to start on 14 February and will run to 20 June 2017. Only a Tuesday class will be conducted. There will be no Saturday class. 34 interested people attended the coffee morning on 8/12/16 and 23 people have paid up.
The next coffee morning will be held on Saturday 21 January 2017, 10am. Please do tell your friends who may be interested.

iM4U Awards – Volunteer Malaysia Awards – A Prime Minister’s Award, 9/12/16
Museum Volunteers were
nominated for iM4U's
Volunteer Malaysia Awards
2016 (under the Public Sector
category)! 1Malaysia for
Youth, usually stylised as
1M4U or iM4U, is an
initiative of the Malaysian
government to encourage
volunteering among
Malaysian youth. It was
initiated by Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in 2012. iM4U also offers funds to youth volunteer organisations. The
award categories are:
1. Best Volunteer Initiative Awards for: Public Service Sector, Private Sector, NGO/NPO/Collective, DRe1M Fund, Media Organisations, Personality, School & People’s Choice
2. Lifetime Achievement Award 3. Superelawan of the Year 4. Best Social Media Campaign for a Volunteer Initiative 5. Best Humanitarian Song
I am afraid I am not able to find the list the winners. The only thing I am sure of is MV did not win!
The Award ceremony and banquet was
held at the Sunway Resort Hotel. It was
a star-studded parade of “famous”
emcees and entertainers – I almost felt
like I was attending the Oscars! There
were 125 tables; an eleven piece band;
red carpet; spinning spotlights; flying
camera. The grand finale of the night
was the Prime Minister giving out the
Gold awards personally. Although MV
did not win, we rubbed shoulders with
those who did!
