June 22, 2014 Dear Friends,

Today as a Church universal and as a local community of faith we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy

Body and Blood of Christ, commonly referred to in its Latin title, Corpus Christi. Although we gather to celebrate the Eucharist each Sunday and every day we never want to take for granted the great depths of the mystery we celebrate - that we receive the body and blood, soul and divinity of our Lord at each Eucharist.

Our Eucharistic sacrifice gathers us together and is the “source and summit of the Christian life.” (Catholic Catechism) Through the body and blood of Christ we become one in communion; we share a common sacrifice, a common thanksgiving, a common meal, a common savior, and we encounter forgiveness, one salvation, and one gift of eternal love. For all that we receive we should never take this great gift for granted.

True devotion to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is so evident in our parish by your faithful participation at mass, the frequent visitors we have in our Adoration Chapel, our beautiful Forty Hours devotion and our Corpus Christi procession this weekend. Please join us for our Eucharistic procession at the end of the 12 Noon Mass this weekend. “Our faith in God who took flesh in order to become our companion along the way needs to be everywhere proclaimed, especially in our streets and homes, as an expression of our grateful love and an inexhaustible source of blessings.” (St. John Paul II, 2005) Join us as we process to Villa Saint Martha, St. Martha Manor and to the front of the Education Center.

Once again we join the U.S. Catholic Bishops and the Archdiocese in the Fortnight for Freedom taking place this year from June 21-July 4. The Fortnight is vital to establishing and maintaining a new movement for religious freedom, in response to the growing range of religious freedom issues, in so many areas of law, such as the HHS mandate, the sanctity of marriage, immigration, adoption, and disaster relief, both here and abroad. Pray for the protection of conscience rights and religious freedom that all people of good will work together against the increasing threats to these fundamental rights.

THANK YOU! A very big thank you and word of gratitude goes out to our Festival Committee and all who made our 2014 Community Festival such a success. Our new and larger parking lot helped us with better traffic and each year our festival gets bigger and better. Many people come together and work long and hard to ensure that all of our visitors and parishioners have a good old time. Our Community Festival is quickly becoming the start of a summer tradition.

May the power and the grace of our Eucharistic Lord guide us all into a stronger Eucharistic community, where the Lord is the source and summit for all that we say and do and may the Lord unite us as one parish family in love and His protection.

Welcome

Matthew

Biedrzycki My name is Mr. Matthew Biedrzycki and I am a seminarian studying to be a priest in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I am entering my fifth year of seminary, 3rd year of theological studies, and I am an

Acolyte. Serving as an Acolyte is the step prior to – God-willing – being ordained a deacon (and in my case two steps away from being ordained a priest)! I am a graduate of Northeast Catholic High School (class of 2006) and Temple University (class of 2010). My home parish is St. Martha Parish, Philadelphia. Running, cooking (well, learning to cook) and reading are a few of my hobbies and Gal 2:20 is one of my favorite Bible verses. I am thrilled to be serving at St. Joseph Parish this summer and look forward to meeting you all. Pray for me, I am praying for you!

Letter from

Archbishop Chaput Peter’s Pence Collection

June 28 & 29

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Our participation in the Peter’s Pence Collection gives us an opportunity be a witness of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. Gifts to this annual collection help the Holy Father support victims of war, natural disasters, and others most in need of assistance. On Easter Sunday 2013, Pope Francis encouraged each person to be a witness of charity. He said, “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy…and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation, and make justice and peace flourish.” Pope Francis has continued to remind us through his actions that we must serve our brothers and sisters in order to be true disciples of Christ. This special appeal gives us the opportunity to be pilgrims of charity around the world. This year the Peter’s Pence Collection will be taken at all Masses on the weekend of June 28 and June 29, 2014.

Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,

+Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.

Archbishop of Philadelphia

Fortnight for Freedom in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

Now through July 4, 2014

Prayer for Religious Liberty Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1).

We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice and the common good.

Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties.

By your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

We ask this through the intercessions of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Legion of Mary This group of men and women demonstrates and deepens their devotion to our Blessed Mother through prayer and service. Active members meet weekly for prayer and discussion of the work of the past week. They routinely visit hospitals and nursing homes, say the rosary with groups of homebound parishioners, and stand ready to assist the pastor when needed. Auxiliary members support the work of active members by praying the rosary and legion prayers daily. Contact Mimma Patrono at 610-384-7933 for more information.

The Loaves and Fishes

Project With the Loaves and Fishes Project, giving is as easy as 1-2-3:

• Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-perishable item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass.

• Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet on your right as you come into church.

• Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team will deliver the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown.

Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, or once a year. As a church family, we can make a much appreciated contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week.

If you would like to be part of the Loaves and Fishes team, picking up food and delivering it to the Lord’s Pantry, please contact Nancy Farrington at [email protected] or 610-620-3619.

Among the compelling Eucharistic themes proclaimed in today’s readings is the notion of “participation” as found in Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Good stewards are part of a Eucharistic family: loving, welcoming, serving. An important part of living as a steward comes about in the many ways we can participate in the life of the Church. No matter how much time we have to give, no matter what our skills or interests, no matter what our level of commitment, there is a way to participate as a good steward to enrich our lives and the lives of others to build up the Body of Christ.

Volunteer with Project

Linus Involves knitting or crocheting blankets/quilts for critically ill children and distributing them to hospitals in our area. Want to help? Donate a blanket to your local Project Linus. Blankets must be new, handmade and washable. Call Shirley Miller at 610-269-4702. Please do not bring the blankets to the parish office or church.

AID FOR FRIENDS During summer, we start to get low on meals in the Aid for Friends freezer. Don’t forget that meals are needed every day for our local homebound neighbors. Pan packets are available in the St. Katherine Drexel room in the church or next to the freezer in the Holy Family center. Call Debby O’Keefe @ 610-269-8032 for more information.

Saint Joseph Moms Group!

Our group meets every Tuesday morning in the Parish Meeting Center behind the school from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The kids play and the moms chat. We also meet once a month at a member's home for an "Moms Night In." The group provides not only socialization for the kids and moms, but an opportunity for faith sharing. It is a great way to find your place in our large Saint Joseph community and to build lifelong friendships with other Catholic moms. If you would like information, please contact Anne Metz at [email protected].

www.ydisciple.org What is discipleship?

Discipleship is mentoring someone in

the Christian life. While Jesus could

have reached the masses in His

earthly ministry, He chose to devote

the majority of His time to 12 men. He knew He needed

to personally care for and form a small group of men

who would be strong enough to do the same for others.

In the end, this approach would multiply disciples and

reach the masses. In other words, Jesus' plan to reach the

world was through the multiplication of disciples which

is why He asked us to “go therefore and make disciples

of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19).

YDisciple provides an ideal environment for high school

teenagers to come to know and love their faith.

Discipleship is not a program – it is an apprenticeship in

the Christian life. Small group meeting times are flexible

to meet the needs of our busy lives. YDisciple is

designed to:

• Connect teens with caring, trained faith-filled adults

who can mentor them.

• Address the need of teenagers to form relationships

with responsible adults beyond their own family as

part of the process of becoming their own person.

• Draw teens out of the culture into an environment

where they can be known and cared for in the

community of the Church.

• Catechize in a small-group setting where testimony,

discussion, and faith sharing can take place.

• Support parents with resources to grow in their own

faith and share their faith with their teenagers.

• Provide quality content so adult leaders can

effectively introduce and explore topics of the faith.

Stay tuned for more information about YDisciple and

how you can be involved.

Have you heard about Marriage Encounter

Weekend?

These weekends focus on communication be-tween husbands and wives. They provide a

conducive environment for couples to spend time together, away from the distractions and tensions of everyday life, while encouraging them to focus on each other and their relationship.

It is not a retreat, marriage clinic, group sensitivity, or a substi-tute for counseling. It is a unique approach aimed at revitaliz-ing Marriage – a time for you and your spouse to be alone to-gether, to rediscover each other and together focus on your relationship for an entire weekend. Every marriage deserves that kind of attention! The next Marriage Encounter Weekend is July 18–20 at St. Mary of Providence Center in Elverson.

For more information, including sign-up, please visit wwme-philly.org. Parish contacts: Kim and Jim Musick: [email protected] as well as Phyllis and Rich Fasano: [email protected].
