Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Do you believe in miracles? This was the question posed by the famous sports broadcaster Al Michaels in the final seconds
of the game known to us as the ‘Miracle on Ice.’ In this game, the underdog United States Hockey Team managed to knock off the four-time defending gold medalists U.S.S.R. 4-3 in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Going into the game, everyone basically expected the Soviet Union to win and then get their fifth gold medal in five years. That didn’t happen, a miracle took place and the United States won.
This miracle is to this day one of the greatest sports miracles in history, and it is often referenced throughout the sports world. Isn’t it interesting that miracles are so often at the front and center of what we do? This Miracle on Ice is of course a good sports example but there are many more that we so often take for granted, like the against all odds creation of the universe, the sun and moon rising and setting each day, the complex workings of the human body, and you yourself are, in fact, a miracle. There is certainly no reason that you have to be here, yet you are.
Some people dismiss miracles as prescientific confusion, but those people just don’t understand the common human experience. Miracles are wonders of a certain kind that God gives to us freely to take us out of ourselves and He puts us into the realm of the divine, He puts us into His world.
That brings me to this wonderful Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, better known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Since miracles are so often the center of our ordinary lives, it makes sense that miracles would be the center of our spiritual lives as well. Certainly the miracle of Christ rising from the dead is the doctrine we cling to as Catholic Christians, but Jesus didn’t just stop there. He gave us the miracle of Himself, every day present in all Tabernacles throughout the world. The God of the Universe condescends Himself to simple bread and wine for us to eat and drink, so that we can become like Him and share in His divine life.
You may say, the Eucharist doesn’t make sense; all that I can say is, it’s not supposed to. Just as the United States beating the Soviet Union in 1980 didn’t make sense, and the creation of the universe doesn’t make sense, and you yourself don’t make sense, the Eucharist ‘doesn’t make sense.’ But that’s okay, that’s why they’re miracles.
After Al Michaels asked the audience if they believed in miracles, he immediately answered with a loud “YES!” Let’s go to the altar today with that same answer to that same question. May the Good Shepherd continue to guide you,
Nick Clinton

INTRODUCTION TO READINGS: The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
FIRST READING: EXODUS 24:3-8 - Today’s passage from the book of Exodus describes the covenant between God and the Israelite people. A covenant is a solemn agreement made between two parties and was usually sealed in blood. In ancient times, blood was considered the source of life. To sprinkle two people with the same blood bonded them as closely as if they were blood relatives.
SECOND READING: HEBREWS 9:11-15 - On Yom Kippur, the high priest sacrificed a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal of the covenant made at Mount Sinai, and prayed that God would forgive the sins they had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for today’s reading from the letter to the Hebrews.
THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Faith has many important facets that are effective in our lives. Prayer and worship connect us to the God who created us and
who daily gives us purpose and provides for us. Times of community and fellowship unite us with our family in faith to realize that we are not alone on our journey of love with God. Outreach and charity put our faith into action so that we can be the hands and heart of Jesus in the world and provide for the needs of others. Yet, at the heart of our faith, its essential foundation, is the gift of God himself to his people, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the memorial of God’s great act of love for us, the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. The Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ made truly present so that we might be nourished to do the work of God in the world. The Eucharist is the source of our life as people of faith and that to which we return all that we have received in thanksgiving to God. Inspired by this Feast of Corpus Christi and as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may our love for the Eucharist increase so that our faith may remain strong in the midst of change. relationship with Christ through a life of joyful prayer.
Available on the kiosk in the Narthex.
We conduct the prayerful recitation of the DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET each Friday morning before Mass at 9:00 am in the Church. All are welcome to join our prayer.
On April 21/22, the Cub Scouts of Pack

by those less fortunate. The scouting organizations of St.
Catherine’s would like to thank all of those who donated to
this worthy cause. The collection was a big success!

MUSIC NOTES: With today being the celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ, I
thought it would be a good idea to reflect on why we sing a Communion Hymn. We
sing at Communion because what we are doing is a communal action, not a private
one. Although we are individuals, we move in procession to the Eucharistic table as
one body to be fed by the Body and Blood of Christ. We sing to express our common
Baptism, and the unity of our hearts and minds. We also sing to accompany the
communion procession. Like all processions at Mass, there is to be some type of
music, for example, the Opening and Closing Procession, and the procession of the
Book of the Gospels. As we come forward to receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist,
sing out your joy and gratitude for the greatest of all gifts.
I would like to thank the Adult Choir and the Handbell Choirs for their dedicated
ministry over the past year. Both choirs will be on a well deserved holiday until
September. —God Bless, Jim Skalos, Music Minister
DISCIPLESHIP CORNER: Most regular Mass attendees know that the Second
Person of the Trinity, God the Son, comes at the moment of consecration to be both
physically and spiritually present in the consecrated elements. (If you didn’t know that,
look forward to next week’s Discipleship Corner!) However, fewer people are aware
that the Third Person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit, is also a key part of the Mass.
Right before consecration, the priest offers a prayer of Epiclesis, urging the Father to
send down the Spirit so that the Son would be made present. The wording can vary,
but in each case the Holy Spirit is asked to “sanctify” or “make holy” the gifts of bread
and wine.
This might seem unnecessarily complicated: We ask the Father to have the Spirit
make ready a place for the Son? Yet, it is remarkably true to scripture as well. In the
Gospel of Luke, we learn from the Angel Gabriel that it is by the power of the Holy
Spirit that Mary will miraculously conceive Jesus. (We acknowledge this truth every
time we recite the Creed.) The Holy Spirit was a crucial and necessary part of Jesus
becoming incarnate 2000+ years ago. And He remains crucial in Jesus becoming
physically present to us now. And just as the Holy Spirit makes the gifts to be
consecrated holy, He also lives in us to make us holy. It is through the ministry of the
Holy Spirit that we can be made ready to receive Jesus in the Eucharist; like Mary, we
are called to make ourselves into a temple for the Lord.
Challenge: How can we better invite the Holy Spirit to prepare us to receive Jesus at
Mass? Offer a prayer to the Holy Spirit asking Him to make you more attentive to
God’s will for your life.
—Will Reaves, Director of Evangelization and Intentional Discipleship

designed to serve families with loved ones struggling with addiction. This group is a

healing are made possible. David Gentile, a psychologist who has worked with this
family crisis and addiction issues for several years, as well as personal experience,
facilitates this much needed group. The ministry meets every Thursday evening from
