O Come Let Us Adore Him

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Body & Blood of Christ. Some may ask, “didn’t we already do that on Holy Thursday?” That is certainly true, but it is equally true that we celebrate this Mystery of Faith each and every time that we gather to offer the Mass. The plain fact is that since the Eucharist is both the summit and source of Christian life, we can always profit from reflecting more deeply on its meaning in our day to day lives. The Holy Eucharist was instituted by Christ as: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us. This definition reminds us that the Greek word eucharist which means to give thanks is a verb as well as a noun. But we probably more often use it as the noun we use when referring to the bread and wine consecrated by the priest during the Mass. This is likely due to the fact that for a very long time our understanding of Catholic worship was so focused on the miracle of changing bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, that we seldom reflected on Mass as a sacred celebration that priests and people offer together to give thanks and praise to God. Jesus gave his whole self (body & blood, soul & divinity) to us for a purpose that goes beyond just offering him reverence and adoration at the consecration. Christ did not institute the Eucharist simply to glorify the role of those who would come to be known as bishops and priests. He commanded his disciples to take and eat, take and drink so that the effects of his coming death and resurrection would benefit all his followers as often as they proclaimed his death until he comes again. In short, Jesus Christ becomes truly present in the sacrament of his body & blood, so that he can become as truly present in the lives of those who take and eat, take and drink. Remember that God so loved the world that he sent his only beloved son so that people could enjoy the fullness of life. We partake of his true body and blood so that Christ can love, forgive, heal, and encourage others in and through us. May we grow in our awareness of the real presence of Christ in those who receive him in Holy Communion.

JOURNEY OF FAITH

and

ALPHA We use the term Journey of Faith at St. Andrew’s to describe the process that leads inquirers to the sacraments of initiation. But who of us is not also on a faith journey that invites us to the kind of close relationship with Christ and his church that makes it possible for us to be more intentional disciples? It is for this reason that those who are already Catholic are invited to the JOF process for the purpose of growing in the faith and in accompanying those who are on their way to becoming Catholics through sacramental initiation. We encourage parishioners to let people know about JOF as a form of spreading the Good News of our Catholic faith. ALPHA is an exciting and vastly successful course that provides a wonderful introduction to the Journey of Faith process while serving as a means that benefits all who are open to pursuing a closer relationship with Christ and the Church. As if those two purposes were not enough, ALPHA has also proven able to engage doubters, agnostics, and even those who don’t presently believe in God. Our next ALPHA course will begin on Wednesday, August 30th, in the Joyce Center. This will also mark the first session of our 2017-2018 Journey of Faith. Please help us spread the word to parishioners and to those you may know as not presently affiliated with any community of faith.

Make Summer Safe for Kids

Master water safety Water-related activities

are popular for getting physical activity and have many health benefits. Here are some tips to stay safe while having fun.

• Learn how to prevent recreational water illnesses and help protect yourself and your kids.

• Help kids get H2O Smartz about water safety.

Drowning is responsible for more deaths among

children ages 1-4 than any other cause except birth

defects. Two to three children die every day as a result

of drowning.

• Always supervise children when in or around water. A responsible adult should constantly watch young children.

• Teach kids to swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning.
