PBS HAWAII PRESENTSDream Big: Nanakuli At The Fringe
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 | 9:00 PM
Often it’s someone sharing that one of our television programs made a light go on in their head or their heart, enriching their perspective. Or it’s an individual’s handwritten “good job!” note on a check to renew annual support; a return email saying, “thanks to the weekly e-newsletter, I caught a great show I would otherwise have missed;” or a HIKI N -OŌteacher writing, “I appreciate all of the mentoring and the fact that I don’t have to pay or fundraise to participate in this program.”
Since the people of Hawaii voluntarily support this educational media organization with their pocketbook, it’s hardly necessary to say thanks in addition. No wonder I often feel like writing thank-you notes for thank-you notes!
We certainly don’t take for granted any of the support we receive. And frankly, we’re grateful for constructive criticism as well, because we always want to strive to do better.
This year, there are literally millions of extra reasons for thanksgiving at PBS Hawaii. On August 30, we received the single largest contribution we’ve ever received from a charitable foundation – $5 million.

PBS Hawaii’s mission is to inspire, inform and entertain by providing high-quality programming and valuable services for our diverse island community.
Major support of the station comes from the people and businesses of Hawaii.
-A hui hou,
The money comes in the form of a grant to help us meet a huge new challenge. As we’ve reported to you, we’re losing our lease on the grounds of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, as the UH plans to use the space
to house its academic programs. So we have an urgent need for a new broadcast home. The site, at the corner of Nimitz Highway and Sand Island Access Road, has already been purchased debt-free. (At this time, we’re renting the property to a local company, American Electric.)
The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, founded by a Kauai-born lifelong learner who made a fortune in real-estate, pledged $5 million toward building our new home. Capital grants of this size are rare, and the gift shot us past the midway point of our $30 million goal. Our Board of Directors, led by Robbie Alm, began the campaign with a 100% pledge of personal financial support.
Trustee Kenneth Okamoto took the lead on The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation’s grant to PBS Hawaii. He said PBS Hawaii is making an “indelible difference” for students in the HIKI N -OŌstatewide student news network, and that the foundation wants to see public television “survive and thrive for the sake of future generations of Islanders.”
We say a special thank-you to Ken Okamoto and the foundation principals: Chairman John K. “Jack” Tsui, Vice-Chair and Secretary Raymond Tam, Treasurer Peter P.J. Ng and Catherine H.Q. Ching, with President R. Stevens Gilley. Mahalo nui loa to all believers in the value of our mission, teaming education and media. Wishing you and yours a lovely holiday…

Big dreams are often followed by heartfelt gratitude. Such is the case with the story behind the latest PBS HAWAII PRESENTS documentary, Dream Big: Nanakuli At The Fringe, which premieres Thursday, November 10 at 9:00 p.m. In the fall of 2010, PBS Hawaii cameraman Glenn Yamamoto and independent producer-director Roy Kimura were filming a station image promo with Nanakuli High and Intermediate School’s HIKI N -O teacher Robin Kitsu and his students. During the course of the shoot, Glenn and Roy found out that Robin is also the director of NPAC (Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center) and that the company had been invited to perform at the world’s largest arts festival — the prestigious Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, by many standard measurements, is ranked as the worst school in the State’s public school system, yet the students who participate in NPAC tend to excel both academically and in personal development. The story had the makings of a classic PBS-style documentary: a school suffering from a poor public and self image travels 7,000 miles to present itself on the world stage. Glenn and Roy told me that PBS Hawaii had to follow NPAC to Scotland and tell their story in a documentary.
But it was not a foregone conclusion that NPAC was going to go to Scotland. Faced with the formidable task of raising an enormous amount of money to pay for the trip, it looked as though their dream would not come true. But the community rallied behind NPAC and, eventually, the money was raised. NPAC went to the Fringe and PBS Hawaii found the means to send Glenn and Roy to document the amazing journey. And well they did, as you’ll see in the documentary what transpired on that very emotional, life-changing trip. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Robin Kitsu would like to express his gratitude to all those who supported NPAC in their time of need: “The cast, crew, and staff of the Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center are very thankful to the hundreds of people, businesses, and organizations from across the state, the mainland, and even the United Kingdom for their support that allowed us to travel to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Personally, I would also like to thank them for validating to the students the many lessons I have taught about having dreams and that with hard work, passion, commitment, and support from others, anything is possible. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the students who, 15 months ago, thought this could never happen. Now, these

students carry with them not only memories, but also the ability to teach others about lessons learned from their interactions with people from around the world and their visits to the many historical sites in London and Scotland. Thank you again.” The experience of covering NPAC on this trip was also a life-changing event for the documentary crew, and Roy Kimura has much to say about that: “As a television director, I am thankful for the many opportunities presented by my career. I have heard extraordinary stories and seen wonderful sights that
I never would have experienced outside of television production. What I am most thankful for, though, are the people who allow me to visit their lives. This August, I was privileged to accompany the students and alumni of Nanakuli High and Intermediate Performing Arts Center as they journeyed to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform in The Fringe Festival. I approached this story as a job, looking to document the contrast presented when the ‘worst school in Hawaii’ was invited to perform on the world’s largest performing arts stage. What I came away with was the friendship of 19 new people — friends who embraced me and Glenn, welcoming us into their family. This group of young men and women, along with director Robin Kitsu, represented Nanakuli, Hawaii, and the United States proudly in London and Scotland. They taught me about love, respect, care and the true meaning of the word, ‘family.’ For this, I am truly grateful.” Finally, I would like to thank all of PBS Hawaii’s individual donors, corporate underwriters, and grant funders. Without their support, we would not be able to produce the kind of programming that shares must-see stories like Dream Big: Nanakuli At The Fringe. Being able to present stories which are unique to Hawaii for the people of Hawaii is my dream job, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity.

Congratulations also to Mid-Pacific Institute, whose performing arts program was also invited to the 2011 Festival Fringe. Mid-Pac, which, like Nanakuli, is a HIKI N -O school, took their talent and aloha all the way to Edinburgh, Scotland and made Hawaii doubly proud of our keiki o ka ‘aina.

“Family around the table is a must. I have to have my two girls there since they are out of the house now. The food has local influences, of course, with things from many different places and cultures: Portuguese sausage in the stuffing; kim chee on the side as well as ko choo jang sauce for the turkey. Finally I look closely at the local newspaper to see if I need to be getting up early the next day for any sales!” Brandt Farias Executive Vice President, First Hawaiian Bank
“We celebrate Thanksgiving by having a large breakfast, watching football on TV, napping and lounging by the pool. The big feast occurs around 6 PM, when we eat all the standard foods, turkey, prime rib and also include Asian dishes. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. As I get older I appreciate the blessings I have been given: health, a happy family and the good fortune to be at the right place at the right time!”

PBS Hawaii has received $10,000 from Big Island’s KTA Super Stores to support the participation of Hawaii Island schools in HIKI N -O: The Nation’s First Statewide Student News Network.
Barry also reminded us of the number one rule in fundraising – people give to people.
Barry made this generous gift in honor of his grandparents, company co-founders Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi. In 1916, Koichi & Taniyo established their business to provide family and friends with convenient access to grocery items. Before they opened an actual store, Koichi took orders and delivered merchandise to Hilo families on bicycle. Today, KTA Super Stores is recognized as a local fixture on the Big Island.
Mahalo, Barry! By continuing your family’s tradition of giving, Hawaii Island students “can do!”

“Since our six stores are located on the Big Island, it is really a no-brainer for us to want to support a program that helps Big Island kids,” said KTA Super Stores President and CEO Barry Taniguchi. “HIKI N -OŌ is a particularly good project because it offers the students a broader perspective that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get,” he added.
“Since 1916, their business philosophy was to ‘humbly serve the people of our community.’ I am just building on the philanthropic spirit of my grandparents.”
“Another reason I wanted to contribute to HIKI N -OŌis that Leslie Wilcox asked me personally. When some-one as talented and respected in the community as Leslie asks for support, it’s easy to say yes.”

“HIKI N -O offers Kamehameha Schools Maui a great opportunity for us to show what Maui is really about — the unique quirks and customs of the local culture that the majority of the state knows nothing about. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the work that our media program produces. Having my students be a part of and experi-ence a top-notch program like HIKI N -OŌwill give credibility and worth to what I teach. From pre- to post-pro-duction, I want them to experience the real world challenges of putting together a high quality news story for HIKI N -O and to understand the risks and rewards that come with being a part of PBS Hawaii’s state-wide student news network.”

Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) is a group of women educators committed to promoting excellence in educational activities and altruistic proj-ects. Members of its Hawaii Chapter have been long-time support-ers of PBS Hawaii, working behind-the-scenes twice a month to help keep the state’s only public television station running at its best.
At the first annual HIKI N -OŌconference in September, Hawaii ADK was stationed at the East-West Center Imin Conference facilities all day, ensuring student participants were at their scheduled breakout sessions at the right place and time. In March, they served as guides during the aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee. Besides volunteering, Hawaii ADK finds other ways to help PBS Hawaii. At last month’s annual Founder’s Day event, they presented our station with a check for $700.
Hawaii ADK member Anne Hedani chooses to support PBS Hawaii because it “gives me a wholesome, broad-based way to view the world…something of value that I want to be able to share with my grandchildren for a long, long time.”
PBS Hawaii would like to recognize and thank Hawaii Alpha Delta Kappa as well as all of our dedicated volunteers. We are grateful for their social conscience, goodwill and generosity.

AMERICA IN PRIMETIME presents some of the most compelling shows on television today, as well as those of the past, by focusing on key character archetypes that have remained a staple of primetime through the genera-tions, capturing both the continuity of the character and the evolution. In Man of the House, learn how the central male character has evolved from king of the castle in early sitcoms to a more intricate, conflicted figure in modern shows.

MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARYThe Song of LunchSunday, November 13 | 8 PMWhat could possibly go wrong when two ex-lovers meet for lunch at theirfavorite haunt from years before? A lot. Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility)and Alan Rickman (Harry Potter) take that risk in this funny, bittersweet drama, adapted from Christopher Reid’s captivating narrative poem. Over glasses of Chianti and grappa, the complexities of their relationship emerge. There is so much to talk about, and talk they do, for a surprising, provocative and sometimes agitating lunch-hour, amid the food and bustle of a trendy Soho restaurant called Zanzotti’s, which is less rollicking than they remember from the old days.
9:00 NOVA The Fabric of the Cosmos: The Illusion of Time Brian Greene takes us on the ultimate time traveling adventure, hurtling 50 years into the future before stepping into a wormhole to travel back to the past. NAZI HUNT: ELUSIVE JUSTICETuesday, November 15 | 9 PMIn the aftermath of the Second World War, the Allies declared the Nazi party a criminal organization and pledged to prosecute and punish all those who took part in genocide and crimes against human-ity. During the Nuremberg Trials, approximately 1,000 Nazi officials were convicted of crimes against humanity but hundreds of thousands of suspected war criminals evaded prosecution by returning to the societies they’d helped destroy, concealing their war records, assuming false identities, fleeing Europe or by serving the Allies as spies and scientists. Filmed in eight countries over the course of three years, ELUSIVE JUSTICE profiles the men and women who took matters into their own hands and succeeded in tracking down Nazi fugitives when official institutions failed. Narrated by acclaimed actress Candice Bergen, the film includes interviews with suspected war criminals, their families and defenders, professional and amateur investigators, as well as survivors and politicians.
Left:Tuviah Friedman was a Nazi hunter and director of the Institute for the Documentation of Nazi War Crimes in Haifa, Israel. Friedman was born in Radom, Poland in 1922. During World War II he was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp near Radom, from which he escaped in 1944. Right: Nazi war criminal Kurt Lishka, photographed in Cologne, Germany, in 1971.
