Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was in the PBS Hawaii studio on January 26, taping a Long Story Short with PBS Hawaii president and CEO Leslie Wilcox. Later in the day, HIKI NŌ students from Maui High School covered the Burmese Parliament member's speech and Q.A. session at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Pillars of Peace, Hawaii Community Foundation and Rotary International were instrumental in sponsoring her visit.
Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro stopped by on January 28 to tape his own Long Story Short conversation with Leslie. The segment will air March 12, the same night as the premiere of Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings.

I’m turning three-dot columnist to share with you a few happenings around PBS Hawaii lately:
Nobel Peace Prize winner and Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi stepped out of a long black car in the PBS Hawaii parking lot, accompanied by federal and diplomatic security officers as well as Honolulu police...She looked both regal and fragile...Reserved at first, she warmed to conversation in a taping of Long Story Short, to be aired
in May...On hand were members of the Pillars of Peace/Hawaii Community Foundation initiative and Rotary International which helped bring her to Hawaii...A technical rehearsal was held in our TV studio for the 2013 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee, and once again, judges decided to remove com-mon Hawaiian and Japanese words from the spelling list...Spelling bees would go on for hours in Hawaii if the words sushi, kona, hibachi, ramen, haiku, banzai, kabuki, etc. were included...The father-and-son hosts of Leahey & Leahey waited in vain for their scheduled guest, who was a no-show...Didn’t faze Jim and Kanoa at all…They went before the cameras, just the two of them, and easily filled the half-hour with lively and interesting observations...Steve Komori has retired as PBS Hawaii’s longtime Chief Engineer, but he hasn’t stopped working…He’s in demand as an independent audio technician…Thank you, Steve, for your many contributions to public television...Stepping into the role is John Nakahira, a 24-year veteran at the station who calmly and ably runs our seven-day-a-week Master Control broadcast operations and also troubleshoots office computers...The respected John S. and James L. Knight Foundation singled out PBS Hawaii’s HIKI N -OŌ statewide student news network as one of four successful community information projects in the country to go from idea to impact…Read the Knight report on our website: PBSHawaii.org/hikino…Sue and Jim Bendon of Sprecklesville, Maui, gra-ciously invited friends from different walks of life to their home to share good ideas for Maui community coverage...Like the other guests, my colleague Ben Nishimoto and I admitted being distracted by the gorgeous ocean view from the Bendons’ living room...I always look forward to Dan Boylan arriving at the TV station in Manoa to host our live weekly live public-affairs program, Insights on PBS Hawaii…I can tell he’s in the house by the laughter of Admin staff down the hallway as he jokes with them...There’s a little kitchen at PBS Hawaii where, invariably, a staffer or a visitor has left treats to share…Most recently, there were li hing mui malasadas in a trademark pink Leonard’s box…I love li hing mui on other foods, like pineapple and mango – but I’ll take my malasadas the old-fashioned way, with sugar!...

“If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it.”
The wisdom of this adage is reflected in the honors recently won by members of our PBS Hawaii Board of Directors.
Our Board members care about the community and their professions, and their good works have been noted.
Here's a snapshot of recent awards:
• Robbie Alm, recipient of a University of Hawaii at Manoa Distinguished Alumni Award• Darren Kimura, Hawaii Venture Capital Association “Deal of the Year” Award Winner• David Watumull, Legacy Entrepreneur honoree, Hawaii Venture Capital Association• Carolyn Berry Wilson, inducted into Chaminade University’s Wall of Fame, and selected as one of the Women of Distinction of the Girls Scouts of Hawaii • Guy Fujimura, Outstanding Public School graduate, Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation
And Board member Gayle Harimoto, who often sees and helps fill needs at various nonprofits – including this one – was chosen PBS Hawaii's “VIP,” or Volunteer in Philanthropy, at Hawaii's National Philanthropy Day luncheon.

Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings
You may have seen Jake Shimabukuro live, on YouTube,
or in local car insurance commercials. This month, get
an even closer look at the internationally renowned
ukulele virtuoso from Hawaii.
The documentary will be featured as part of a live broadcast hosted by PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox.
“I’m thrilled that PBS Hawaii is going to be showing Life on Four Strings first,” Jake told the public television station. “I was born and raised in Hawaii and [I’m] just very proud of where I come from. I feel great about my family, friends and all the people here in Hawaii…that they’ll have the first opportunity to see this.”
Directed by renowned filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura, Life on Four Strings follows Jake on a nine-month tour throughout the U.S. and Japan. The documentary was filmed at concert halls, elementary schools, senior care centers and in Sendai, the small town in Japan that was ravaged by the March 2011 tsunami. Home video footage, family photos and interviews with family and friends also document Jake’s rise to international fame.
Jake began playing the ukulele at age four, when his mother gave him the instrument. He initially gained local recognition in the late 90s as part of the music trio Pure Heart. Then in 2006, a
YouTube video of Jake performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” blasted his solo career into overdrive. His video became one of YouTube’s first viral hits, now at over 11 million views.
Outside of the Islands, the ukulele has long been viewed as a gimmick. Jake’s increased popularity may have helped change this perception. With each performance, Jake demonstrates that the ukulele is not just suited for vaudeville and traditional Hawaiian music; he picks and strums jazz, rock, folk and classical music, all on only four strings.
“I never saw the limitations as something that would hold me back,” Jake says in the film.Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings was produced by the Center for Asian American Media in collaboration with Pacific Islanders in Communications and funding support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings premieres on PBS Hawaii on Tuesday,
March 12 at 8:00 pm, two months before its PBS nationwide debut in May.

Q. Why are my questions not read on the air during an Insights program?
A. Host Dan Boylan and the producers of Insights on PBS Hawaii very much want to include as many viewer questions on the air as possible. However, the program is live and by its nature live television is unpre- dictable. Discussions may run long or veer off topic. Duplicate questions may be re- ceived. As moderator, Dan constantly gauges the dynamics among the guests, balancing their discussion with as many viewer ques- tions as time allows. Dan strives to keep the conversation on course, without favor- ing one side or another or veering too far off topic. Insights on PBS Hawaii is about com- munity engagement, and we apologize if your question isn’t asked during the show. We hope you’ll continue to watch the great conversation and civil discourse this live program offers.
Q. Why does PBS Hawaii air a program at a different time from another PBS station?
A. Some of the programs that PBS Hawaii broadcasts come with requirements that they be aired on a certain day and within a certain time frame. These shows are often anchor programs of the PBS schedule – NOVA, Frontline, Washington Week, etc. Other programs may have no fixed schedule requirements, but do have a limited rights window during which PBS Hawaii can air the shows. The station’s programmer takes into account these and other factors as he builds the TV schedule, grouping pro- grams together in ways that serve as many segments of our audience as possible. Though most PBS stations use similar criteria, each one responds in different ways to the inter- ests of its community, and so no two stations come up with identical schedules.
Q. Will you be repeating Seisen! The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire 1905-1945?
A. We appreciate hearing from our viewers and we value their feedback when making future programming decisions. We received numerous requests to encore this two-part series, including several from viewers who had missed Part 1 a week earlier. The pro- gram will be encored on Saturday, April 6 beginning at 9:00 pm, this time with Part 2 airing directly after Part 1 on the same night.
Q. How much money do you get from the federal government?
A. One-seventh of PBS Hawaii’s operating budget comes from federal funds, through the private nonprofit Corporation for Public Broadcasting. That amounts to $1.2 million. Most of our funding comes from individual supporters like you, from businesses that sponsor local and national programs and from restricted grants that support specific initiatives such as HIKI N -O.

BUSINESS AND FOUNDATION SUPPORT
For the past several years, we have been proud to call the Hawaii Credit Union League (HCUL) our partner in the sponsorship of Biz Kid$, a weekly program airing on Saturdays at noon that educates children and teenagers about financial responsibility through thoughtful decision making processes. “Among HCUL’s programmatic initiatives is financial education – which is why we feel so strongly about Biz Kid$,” said Dennis K. Tanimoto, HCUL’s President and CEO. “The concept of Biz Kid$ was created by the Washington Credit Union League and is supported financially by credit unions across the nation. We’re thrilled to pitch in on a local level. “Hawaii has embraced substantive, local programs such as Long Story Short, Insights on PBS Hawaii, HIKI N
-O, and Leahey & Leahey,” Tanimoto
continued. “And the high definition filming and transmission of these programs is really icing on the cake.” Established in 1937, the Hawaii Credit Union League is a nonprofit trade association representing all 76 credit unions located throughout the state of Hawaii, as well as 2 affiliates in Guam and 1 in Yap, Micronesia. Mahalo nui loa to Hawaii Credit Union League for its business support. If you or your business would like to become a PBS Hawaii community partner, contact Tatsu Sasaki at [email protected] or call (808) 973-1990.
HCUL President and CEO Dennis Tanimoto, along with HCUL Member Relations Manager Kathy Morris, present PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox with $10,000 to support the local broadcast of Biz Kid$.
