IWhat are you Googling at?

sn’t GOOGLE an amazing thing? Now we don’t even have to think aboutwhat our New Year’s resolutions will be. We can type in “top ten resolu-tions” in our computer’s search engine and instantly be connected to the

wisdom and resolve of millions of people around the globe -- just like you --who hope to make the new year an opportunity to improve their lives. My particular GOOGLE search brought up the following results:

1) Spend More Time with Family & Friends, 2) Fit in Fitness,3) Tame the Bulge, 4) Quit Smoking, 5) Enjoy Life More,

6) Quit Drinking, 7) Get Out of Debt, 8) Learn Something New9) Help Others, 10) Get Organized

Most of the choices are not surprises. Considering that more than half ofAmericans are overweight, and that we are becoming more and more aware ofthe importance of exercise. Of course, the New year is always the time todedicate to quitting smoking or drinking or gambling or just about any other vicethat needs a yearly reminder of it’s negative effect on our lives. What I found myself mostly intrigued by with this list is just how much of theresolutions can be addressed with a simple tap of a clogging shoe. Looks likewe have a great marketing plan for clogging right here in folks most wished forlife changes. Clogging is one of the few dance activities that families can become involvedin together. Much of the dancing does not need a partner and all music stylesare used. Clogging can be as aerobic as you make it and you don’t need anyspecial equipment, infomercial kits or endorsements to learn it. Sounds like afun activity to add to a plan to tame the bulge. Most every clogging group I know doesn’t not allow smoking, drinking ordrug use, and most clogging events are about as family-oriented as you can get. I’m not sure how clogging can help you get out of debt except to say thatclogging is by far the least expensive dance activity I know of. Our classesand workshops are a fraction of the cost of other dance forms and our work-shops and competitions are very reasonable when compared within the dancecommunity. Spending three hours a week at clogging classes is bound to keepyou out of the department store, QVC or the local lottery dealer. Helping others? Well, sure! You know the people around you would lovea helping hand or a set of feet to watch. Who knows... you just might learnsomething new for yourself! So get yourself organized and make some new flyers for your club andclasses so you can take advantage of all this resolve and enjoy life more!Happy Clogging, Jeff Driggs

Suncoast JamboreeBy Dee Gallina, DirectorSuncoast Jamboree

The SunCoast Jamboree celebrated its 26th anniversaryat the Hilton Hotel in Dayton Beach, Florida August 25 -27, 2005. Thursday night was the trail in dance for boththe cloggers and line dancers. There are those that get inas much dance as they can!!!! I received many good reviews on our instructors. Theyare the cream of the crop and enjoy being a part of theJamboree. Clogging instructors Dieter Brown (NC),Scotty Bilz (GA), Ronnie Doggett (AL), Jeff Driggs(WV), Naomi Fleetwood-Pyle (IN) were our NationalInstructors and Jamie & Becky Conn (FL), SandySmallwood (FL) along with introducing Debbie Claxton(FL) and Greg Dionne (FL) were our Florida instructors.Tracy Foxworth (FL) — as usual — did a terrific job withthe kids as “Tracy’s Troupe” in the Saturday eveningprogram. Tracy also does our “ HIP HOP.” She sure canmove! Tracy’s talents have added a lot of flare to theJamboree over the last 6 years. The line dance instructors, also the cream of the crop, were Stella Cabecca (FL), Bill McGee (FL), MarilynMcNeal (FL), Junior Willis (TN) and Arline Winerman(FL). Debbie Sweet (IN) as usual was there tocoordinate the hall and steps in to help with whateverneeds doing. Her number one job seems to be to keepme laughing. I am so thankful for the many great volunteers that manthe tables during the Jamboree. (Cont. on page 12)

Thanks to the Cloghoppers of Lady Lakes,Betty Willis of Daytona, Naomi’s daughterKelly, Harold from Minnesota, Jan Mathis andDebbie Sweet for all of your help! I have received many emails, phone calls andface to face compliments regarding theJamboree and I thank all of you for the supportthe Jamboree. On Friday night Jeff Driggs and NaomiFleetwood-Pyle hosted the hall.As usual, theydid a terrific job. Much fun was had by thoseattending. Anne Lanier and Matt Koziuk did asmooth and clog routine. Saturday evening the program went off without a hitch. Tracy Foxworth opened theprogram with the pledge of allegiance andbelted out the National Anthem like I had neverheard it before. It left me with goose bumps. She is a very talented person!!!! I sent exhibition forms to all of last year’sexhibition teams and anyone that wants toexhibition is certainly welcome. These are theteams that responded and were extremelygood. Kaley Conn performed her hip hoproutine and she really does an excellent job ofperforming. She is multi-talented. Next wasCritter Cloggers, Orlando Cloggers, CalicoCoyote Cloggers, Wizzbang Cloggers and thelast exhibition was Clogging Connection andemcee Dieter Brown let it be known that theydid a great job at the Junior Olympics. A verynice surprise exhibition was done by line danceinstructor Bill McGee and his group. The groupdanced on stilts! Lince dance instructor JuniorWillis did a great combination of both line danceand clogging for his exhibition. Then the linedance attendees got up and did a number theyall knew and it was so nice to see theirparticipation. Our plaque winners this year were:Youngest Clogger: Gabby Tolento - CalicoCoyote Cloggers age 5, Oldest Clogger: LoriSheldon - Sheldon’s Village Stompers age 75,Largest Exhibition Group: Clogging Connection,Individual Clogger Traveling Longest Distance:Tennille Clemens & Samantha Steinmetz 1528miles from Bar Harbor, Maine

Exhibition Group Traveling Longest Distance: Clogging Connection Saturday night Dieter Brown and Scotty Bilz emceed the fun dancehall and many appreciated doing Parrott’s Hoedown taught by GregDionne and Chocolate by Sandy Smallwood and demonstrator AnitaMcClure. Long-time Suncoast Jamboree supporters Tracy and EvonJohnson came for a visit and many were very pleased to see themthere. Tracy did our logo this year. He and Evon are still in thebackground giving a hand with the Jamboree when they can. Iappreciate their input and help. To close, I have to say that after being in the closet for two hourswith hurricane Charlie I know some of the issues that are facing thehurricane victims from 2005. The risks involved in producing aworkshop are minuscule and therefore I feel very blessed to havehad the opportunity to continue with the workshop.

Stompers and StompettesCloggers In the 90’s a gentleman named “Russ Hansen”, alongwith his wife Opal, moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa fromArizona. Russ had been a square dancer caller for over 50years and a clog dancer for a number of yearswhile living in Arizona. Soon Russ started teaching clogging in Mt.Pleasant. He put together a group of cloggersnamed “The Henry County Cloggers”. In1999, Patricia Johnston moved to Burlington, lowa from Nevada. She heard of Russ & hisclogging dance group. Patricia immediatelylooked them up and became one of the teammembers. Around the age of 80 Russ decided hewanted to retire from dancing, so he askedPatricia if she would be interested in takingover the his team of clog dancers. KnowingPatricia had been an instructor inNevada for 10 years, Russ felt he wasleaving his team in good hands.Confident that Patricia was someonewho would not only keep the teamgoing but would build the small teamof dancers by promoting clogging inand around the Mt. Pleasant area,Russ & Opal returned to the Phoenixarea where they are enjoying theirgolden years with family and friends. The name “Stompers & StompettesCloggers” came about in 1988 whenPatricia opened her first cloggingdance studio in Nevada. Attendingas many workshops as possible andteaching several workshops herself,Patricia soon realized how manyactive cloggers and teams of dancerswere in and around the U.S. Many people have never seen orheard of clogging, so Patricia made ita goal to educate as many as possibleon the subject of clogging and to buildthe team up to 100 cloggers. So farthe teams has grown to 30 plusdancers, mostly performers and a fewnon-performers.

Cloggers Take Thunder to Ireland

Ireland?! You want to take the whole group to Ire-land?!? That’s pretty much how the idea was received when itwas proposed in the spring on 2004. Everyone thought itwould be wonderful. Few thought it was possible. Afterlittle more than a year of fundraising, the trip became areality. Out of our 60+ dancers, not everyone could go.Schedules and commitments prevented some from travel-ing. But every performer who wanted to earn their waywas given the opportunity to do so. We were determinednot to let money be the reason one of our dancers missedthis trip of a lifetime. Aside from the usual car washes, bake sales and raffles,Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers (BRTC) held a tricky tradeBBQ dinner, sold wristbands and T-shirts, applied forgrants and wrote hundreds of letters to friends and familyasking for donations. After a year of scrimping, saving andbegging, we jokingly dubbed “fundraising” as the “F-word” and banned its use in our presenceJ But all the fundraising was a fading memory when wegathered on a hot August day to start our journey. Even afive-hour delay at the airport couldn’t dim the spirits ofthese travelers. We pulled out our playing cards and made

friends out of strangers as we played games to pass thetime. We had been warned repeatedly that Ireland would bewet. We took our rain gear, but rarely had to use it!

Cloggers Take Thunder to Ireland(Continued from page 16)

Out of 10 days on the Emerald Isle, we only had two halfdays of sprinkles! The Irish accused us of bringing them adrought! We savored each glorious day that peaked in thehigh 60s while those at home were suffering through asummer heat wave… Our travel focus was on the southwest portion of Ireland– Killarney and Killorglin. We stayed in thatch-roofedcottages and visited castles, gardens, and the DinglePeninsula. We rode in jaunting carts (horse-drawncarriages), boats, and taxis. Some of us even managed totake tours on horseback! We attended a performance of“To Dance on the Moon” (a River Dance-style produc-tion) and the CD launch concert for an Irish group –Benny O’Carroll. Everywhere we went we met friendlypeople who were thrilled to share their culture and hospi-tality with us. Through research and advance planning, BRTC wasable to co-host a dance workshop with a local Irish dancegroup. They taught us Irish dancing, and we taught themclogging. It was quite comical at times, but built a bridge

across the cultures. We found we shared a love for danceand a lot of laughter! Surely the Irish must have thought the AmericanPaparazzi had landed. Our group of 29 travelers tookwell over 6000 pictures! We were able to perform three times during our stay inIreland. Our pre-planned exhibitions were for the Irishdance group and the Puck Fair — the oldest fair in all ofIreland. We were thrilled to perform for the Puck Fairand found many international travelers in the audience, including several from the U.S.! Our surprise performancewas at the Ireland National Event Center, where we werepleased to be the opening act for an Irish concert. Ouraudiences were gracious and interactive – and everintrigued by what we (as Americans) had done to theirdance form. BRTC would like to thank the many cloggers whohelped to make our trip a reality. Your support meant theworld to us – literally! We’d also like to encourage you todream big for your clogging group. This trip to Ireland hasbeen a bonding experience that we will treasure for yearsto come. It helped us get to know each other better andbrought us closer as a group.
