The Monthly Herald

November 2014 FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The leaves are changing color and most of them are on the ground now. Fall is a beautiful time of the year, a

wonderful time to give thanks to God for all His goodness toward us. Fall is also the time of the harvest: God’s

gracious hand providing a living for those who work the ground and food for the peoples of our nation and world.

God provides for all our needs of body and soul “only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit

or worthiness in me.” Therefore, as Luther once wrote, it is our duty to thank and praise Him, serve and obey Him.

One of God’s earthly blessings is government. Where does “government” come from? Paul states in Romans 13:

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has

established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” And our Lord Jesus told Pilate: “You would

have no power over Me if it were not given to you from above.” (John 19:11) Therefore, the governing authorities

are to be respected as God’s servants, even if they don’t realize their authority comes from Him.

Luther taught that there are “two kingdoms” of God. The “right hand” is His kingdom of grace, the Holy Christian

Church, with Jesus as king, reigning at the “right hand of the Father.” The “left hand” kingdom is His kingdom of

earthly power and authority. Many different kings, presidents, governors and the like have been entrusted with this

authority. Some use it for good; some use it for bad. All of them will answer to the King of kings on the last day

(Psalm 2).

We are blessed to live in a country where we can take part in electing our leaders. We should exercise that privilege

every time we have the opportunity. We are blessed to live in a country that protects our freedom of

speech and freedom of religion. However, there are some leaders who are starting to attack these

freedoms. Freedom of religion is being redefined as “Freedom from religion.” Separation of Church

and State, originally devised as a protection of the church from state laws that would infringe on the

freedom of religion, is being redefined as protecting the state from the influence of religion. This was not the

thinking of our founding fathers. So we should seek to elect those leaders who will abide by the constitution and

protect our God-given rights. Yet, whether we have good or bad leaders, we should pray for all our leaders,

according to the will of God. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

May God bless our nation, our leaders, and our lives. Above all, may God bless us with thankful hearts for all His

good gifts, His gift of government, His gift of all creation, and, most especially His gift of salvation in Jesus Christ, King

of kings and Lord of lords. Let us be thankful for our God and His gifts not only at a time of national thanksgiving, but

every day.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Bender

November 1, and we’re on our way! Anticipation, excitement, a little apprehension. Lessons are ready. Suitcases are stuffed with hundreds of pounds of donated school supplies, vitamins, and medicines. Personal items have been condensed into small carry-ons.

We also carry with us the love and support of our home base--our St. Paul’s brothers and sisters in Christ. We can’t thank you enough for your donations of money and supplies, as well as your participation in our fundraising dinners, PickNSave BBQs, and sales of Guatemalan items.

Now we ask for your continued prayers. Pray that God would grant us safe travel and good health, and pray that he would open the hearts and minds of our Guatemalan friends

to hear and accept the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Come and join your friends in Christ to watch and discuss the movie: God’s Not Dead.

Houseboat Retreat

It is not too late to sign up for the retreat next summer. All it takes is a registration form and $95 deposit made payable to St. Paul’s Youth. An

additional $200 will be due before next July. We are seeking to fund raise the rest of the funds for the trip. If you have signed up but haven’t paid your $95 deposit yet, please do so in the near future.

The following is for senior and junior youth and

their parents:

Parents of College Students We need your help! In early December the St. Paul’s Senior Youth will be putting together care packages to send off to our college youth who call St. Paul’s home. Yet, we need their addresses to send them a gift pack and word of encouragement. So, if you have a college student, please call the church office and give us their address so we can bless them with care in December. 6

Thank you to our Radio Broadcasters, Janet Johnson, Bob Strysick, Craig King, Chris Kadis and to Roger Gottschalk

and his assistant Steve Rolefson, for the many hours spent (usually late Saturday nights), editing, recording &

transporting the tape to the radio station. Steve spends early Sunday mornings delivering the tape to the radio station

& handling the controls during our broadcast. By having Steve handle the controls they offer us a better rate for our

broadcast. Blessings to you all and to our Radio Ministry here at St. Paul's.
