Dear Friends, This fall, we discussed the Israeli elections (plural!) and their consequences for shaping the Jewish state. While a few members of our congregation are Israeli citizens who had the right to vote in those elections, for most of us our relationship to Israel is a little more removed. Some of us have friends and family who live there and have visited many times. Others feel a connection but have never been there. Some of us followed the elections closely and have strong opinions about the policies. Lots of us have lots of questions. All of us, I believe, care about Israel’s future. But other than the few of us who are citizens of Israel, none of us could vote to have an impact on that future. But every five years, we can. The World Zionist Congress is the “parliament of the Jewish people.” Every five years, Jews from all around

the world elect representatives who meet in Jerusalem to allocate close to $1 Billion in funding, and determine the leadership and policies for Israel’s National Institutions: the World Zionist Organization (WZO), the Jewish Agency for

Israel (JAFI), Jewish National Fund-Keren Kayemet LeIsrael (JNF) and Keren Hayesod. The 2020 WZC is the 38th gathering, ever since Theodor Herzl first convened his Zionist Congress in 1897. Our Reform movement together with the Recon-structionist Jewish movement is represented on the ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America) slate, whose platform emphasizes religious pluralism, combatting discrimination, security, and a two-state solution. You can see more information about ARZA and the Reform platform below. You may remember these elections from 2015, when I was proud that Beth David had a strong voter turnout. Due to congregations like ours that voted in

large numbers, our Reform movement had the largest block in the 2015 WZC - 45 out of 145 seats. We used that strength to push back against the overwhelming Orthodox dominance of religious life in Israel, securing $20 million of financial support to our Reform movement in Israel over 5 years, supporting appointees who help implement Reform values such as Equality, Pluralism, and commitment to a Two-State Solution, and joining forces with Israeli political parties to influence Israeli society in matters of conversion, marriage and divorce, religious pluralism, gender rights, and combatting racism. This year, I hope you will join me in voting in the World Zionist Congress election. All of the information is available on our website at https://bdavid.org/event/the-world-zionist-congress-elections/, or please reach out to me, or to our congregational election captain, Burt Langer ([email protected]) for more information or for help voting. Rabbi Beth Kalisch [email protected]

From Louis Bricklin - President’s Message Dear Friends: I wanted to start this month by offering my congratulations both to our Education Director, Rabbi Kevin Bernstein, and to Beth David itself. That’s because I’m really pleased to report that the Congregation’s Board of Trustees has authorized and we have completed a new contract with Rabbi Bernstein under the terms of which he will continue as Beth David’s Education Director at least through the 2022 – 2023 school year. We are delighted. Under his leadership, we believe that the school will continue with the gains of the past several years including revitalization of the Confir-mation process, a burgeoning Madrichim Corps and revisions to the religious school curriculum. I would also be remiss if I did not point out (and thank Rabbi Bernstein for) his willingness to assist us on the bimah and in many other ways as well when Rabbi Kalisch or Cantor Goodlev are otherwise occupied. Rabbi Bernstein happens to be a baseball fan, and it’s clear to me he knows what it means to be a team player. We are glad to have him. While I’m extending thanks, let me add a couple more. First, we had a

remarkable response to our request for yearend gifts to Beth David. Obviously, many of you agree with me that synagogues in general and Beth David in particular have a significant role to play as the world around us changes. At last count, you had contributed well over $30,000 to our yearend appeal. I believe I have

written to each of you who contributed to extend my thanks, but if I goofed and missed you then please accept this note instead (and also let me know so I can at least buy you a cup of coffee and apologize in person). In addition, as I have reported previously, our Small Groups initiative is up and running and from all accounts with great initial success. Jennifer Rose and Susan Cohen-Dickler continue to devote enormous amounts of their time to researching best practices, discussing them with Rabbi Kalisch and bringing them to our group leaders. Thanks to our group leaders themselves, including Helene Bludman, Jim Castello, Don Friedman, Ben Goodman, Susan Katz Hoffman (and pinch hitter Mitch Gerstein) and Michael Yecies. In March, we’ll add Sandy Portnoy to that list. Their dedication to this project has been remarkable. And

thanks to all of you as well who decided to dip your toe into the Small Groups water and give it a try. We think we’re on to something here. More groups to come! By the time you read this we’ll be about halfway through the winter, the days will be getting a little longer and the sun a little stronger. It’s a pretty good metaphor for the good things happening at Beth David. I hope you’ll choose to join with us and enjoy our sunshine! L’Shalom Louis [email protected] p.s. One opportunity to join with us is at the annual spring fundraiser. This year it’s a murder mystery with professional actors, together with cocktails and a catered dinner in the Social Hall. We’re also bringing back the auction and raffle that proved so popular last year. Vicky Weinstein is our chair. I know she and her committee are putting together a wonderful evening. It’s Saturday evening, May 2. Please put it on your calendar now.

The Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for the Board of Trustees and for Officers for the 2019-2020 year. Trustee and Officer positions are subject to election at the Congregational Meeting in June as directed by our bylaws.

Any member of the congregation may suggest to the Nominating Committee other members (or themselves) who are willing to serve in any of these positions. Please contact Ray Reed with nominations, interest, or questions; [email protected]

WITH ALL OF OUR HEART...WITH ALL OF OUR SOUL...AND WITH ALL OF OUR MIND:

Join Rabbi Greg Litcofsky as we discover the spiritual and intellec-tual depths of Jewish prayer. The siddur contains the collective memory along with the hopes and dreams of the Jewish people throughout the ages. In this three-part class we will journey through the siddur together, see its rich history and transformation over time, and discover how the siddur can be a guidebook for mindful Jewish living and help us to pray with all of our heart, all of our soul, and all of our mind

Wednesdays, February 19 & 26, March 4 /7:00-8:30pm

Rabbi Greg Litcofsky is the National Director of Recruitment and Strategic Partnerships for Alexander Muss High School, an academic study program in Israel. Rabbi Litcofsky is an experienced educator, teaching hundreds of stu-dents throughout his career serving congregations in Massachusetts and New Jersey. He has a Masters in Jewish studies and Bible and Ancient Semitic languages.

Around Beth David - Parents Night Out

SATURDAY, APRIL 25TH · 7:00PM

Beth David Parents are invited to join us for a family style chef's tasting menu featuring the food from Abe Fisher on Saturday, April 25 at 7:00pm. There’s no School on Sunday, April 26 so you won't have to worry about waking up early the next morning (theoretically). Now is your chance to hang out with other Beth David parents in a casual, fun dining experience.

Now the fine print:

The cost is $93/person and does NOT include alcohol or bever-ages. But it does include tax and tip. This is NOT a donation to Beth David and just covers the dinner. Your spot is reserved when you pay Jill Bronner (either with a check, through PayPal or through Venmo). Money paid is not refundable unless we sell out and there is still interest OR you find someone to buy your spot from you.

Questions or to reserve your spot contact Jill Bronner [email protected], or 973-727-1468.
