Few museums can boast being able to tell its stories on the very site where it all happened. Britannia Mine Museum’s underground experience is authentic. its buildings are authentic. and the iconic Mill building is architecturally unique.

For tour groups to place Britannia on their schedules, and for families to jump in the car with the kids to make the trek from Vancouver to Britannia, the Museum has to appeal to a multi-generational audience with about two hours of educational entertainment.

The underground experience is the principle attraction. and while there are many interesting things to see and do on site, the Museum needs the critical mass of another major attraction.

The commanding presence of the Mill building makes it the natural location for the second attraction. a unique, immersive, three part Mill experience has been designed by VisTa (www.vista-arts.com) and their long time collaborators, a talented group of artists, designers and engineers. Britannia is confident this new Mill experience will create the needed critical mass for a destination attraction.

in the events Plaza we see the colourful marquee for The Mill experience. every few minutes the entire building rum-bles hinting at the dynamic experience inside. We move up the ramp and as we approach the door, we are greeted by a Britannia host who welcomes us and tells us that our experience will begin in a few minutes.

We enter the room and as our eyes adjust to the subdued lighting, we see a room with several mill equipment artifacts and a graphics treatment on the walls. in front is a large screen and to the right a set of doors. On the screen is a series of interesting “did You know?” graphics. and while we wait for the doors to open, again we hear the curi-ous rumble of the Mill beyond the walls.

The Mill experience entry

Meet the JonesesOur attention is drawn to the large screen by a musical theme and the title, Meet the Joneses. The title fades and we see Lucas Jones, a nine year old student, focusing the camera lens for his video conference call to Miss Peterson’s grade 3 classroom.

Lucas is about to present a unique science project that he has created. Miss Peterson and her students feel like they are behind us in the room and we are immersed in their conver-sation. Lucas is standing on the front lawn of his family home with his Mom, dad and grumpy teenaged sister emma who is completely absorbed in texting and ignores everything around her. all their material goods are neatly placed throughout the lawn in front of their attractive suburban house.

PART 1: Meet the Joneses Minerals & Metals—essential to our everyday Life

in front of Lucas is a pile of cue cards that he plans to work through in a presentation identifying all the various minerals and metals that are essential for the material goods that are a part of our everyday life. With each card, Miss Peterson’s class shouts out the name of the mineral or metal.

Lucas begins with the family’s hybrid electric suV. as he finishes one stack of cue cards, the car to his dad’s horror, disappears in a puff of smoke leaving only the tires, some plastic and an oil slick.

and what other items are made from metals? The scene now moves at a fast-forward speed. as Lucas identifies items and metals, just as quickly each vanishes in a puff of smoke.

Two burly movers in orange cover-alls and tool belts, enter the house and quickly, in fast-forward mode, remove all the metal and mineral based items, right down to the copper plumbing, ceramic toilet, and finally the nails and screws holding up the wooden house.

The house collapses in a dusty heap of wood and asphalt shingles. The parents are horrified!

Miss Peterson asks about the rare earth minerals that are only found in electronics such as emma’s cell phone. now emma notices what has been happening and realizes that her smart phone is the next target.

she tells Lucas to sTOP as only a big sister can. she grabs the remote, steps toward the camera, our screen, presses rapid reverse and returns the family and their possessions back to normal.

dad gratefully embraces his car. emma turns to Lucas and tells him never to do that again. she turns back to us and switches off the camera with the remote. The screen goes to black with the concluding message:

as the house lights fade up, our Britannia host opens the double doors to the right of the screen and invites us to continue into in the next theater.

as we enter the next theater, immediately we notice the colourful robot MaX making himself busy. he acknowledges us and asks that we come in and find a space for the show. he tells us that we are waiting for Brad. But Brad is a human and therefore not as punctual as robots.

already we note a comic tension between our two host characters. MaX clearly thinks that the world would be better if robots ran it. Brad is our enthusiastic 20-something Britannia Guide with an infectious personality. The two of them banter and spar throughout the presentation.

On the screen in front of us is the final frame of the Meet the Joneses film: Minerals & Metals – Essential to our Everyday Life

Brad rushes in a bit out of breath, and appears on the vertical screen to the right. he tells us not to worry; no Joneses were hurt in the filming of that story.

But, he explains, the story of the Joneses does bring up an interesting dilemma for all of us in this modern world, where do we get all these minerals to make the essential metal things in our modern life?

he tells us that mining today is quite different from Britannia’s day just a hundred years ago and shows us a wil-derness area that used to be a mine. it can take many years to get to this but that’s how it’s done today in Canada.

Once those minerals are turned into metals, they can be recycled, endlessly! a lot of the copper from Britannia is still being recycled and used today.

zinc saves children: Canadian miners and uniCeF provide zinc supplements to children in developing countries, saving tens of thousands.

Metals make energy clean: all green energy technologies rely on iron, aluminum, copper and zinc.

germs hate copper: new copper alloys kill germs and superbugs in hospitals and food services.


and as our modern world creates new technologies to solve our global challenges, minerals are being used in new and innovative ways.

On the center screen we see a dozen people in a coffee shop quietly texting each other when they could just as easily be in conversation.

One of the texters stands and approaches the camera. it’s emma Jones. she gestures to Brad with a silent “i’m watching you.”

Brad summarizes: Modern technolo-gies need metals that come from modern mining.

and that brings us back to Britannia. The most modern mill in the world... in its day was Britannia’s Mill #3. it provided essential and strategic copper and zinc for about 70 years. so lets go back in time and see what this engineering marvel was like about 100 years ago.

MaX raises the center screen and opens the giant sliding door to reveal the inside of Mill #3. Our Britannia host invites us to enter.

coal builds communities: steelmaking coal remains a vital building-block for the development of modern infrastructure.

potash feeds the world: Canada’s potash mines provide natural, organic fertilizer to feed growing global populations.

Titanium enhances life: from artificial joints to aerospace and sport, titanium enhances our quality of life.

as we enter the Mill, the walk-outmusic fades behind us. We are struckby the cathedral-like grandeur of thismagnificent space. as our Britanniahost guides us to the seating area wecan hear the water drops splashing.a wind gust rattles the metal panelsand we hear the wings flapping of apigeon that has made the rafters ofthis abandoned building its home.The space speaks to us of a massiveenterprise that took place here about100 years ago.

PART 3: Britannia’s Mill #3: The Most Modern Mill in the World… in its day!


a breathtaking you-are-there, multi-media experience brings Britannia’s Mill #3 aLiVe.

emerging from the floor is a screen and Brad appears again. his mood is more reverent now. We see shadows of work-ers projected on the rock walls. he tells us stories of the people who worked here. sometimes you can feel the spirits here he tells us.

• The mysterious burning down of Mill #2 during a labour dispute.

• The remarkable construction of Mill #3 in only 18 months.

• How technology changed and Britannia changed with it so the place was almost constantly under construction.

• When it opened 40 workers processed 2500 tons per day; at its peak it was processing 7000 tons a day with just four people.

• Communication was difficult through the noise and constant dust so they used a mix of bells, whistles, pipe banging and flashlight codes.

• And there’s the story of how the 5000 pound skip with a one ton load broke loose crashed through the wall behind the audience, shot across the yard and through the door of the welding shop.

But we are all wondering what it looks like up there beyond those endless stairs and rails. When the building was shut down, all the machinery was sold off. Brad tells us, through the magic of technology he can re-create what it might have looked like almost 100 years ago. a large 14 foot screen lowers and provides us with a security camera look at each level. starting at the top with the electric train arriving and dumping the ore all the way down to the concen-trate leaving the building at level 8, Brad describes the process and provides an historical re-creation on the screen. each floor and area is lit as Brad’s description moves through each step in the entire process.

as we move from the trestle with the arriving train down through each step in the process, we see each floor as it is today, and then dissolve to an animated re-creation as it might have appeared about 100 years ago.

But what was it like to actually be there when the Mill was fully operational in 1924? Well, lets fire up the entire Mill Brad exclaims!

as he does this, each step in the process becomes accumulative. The dust builds, the sounds get louder and more varied, we see activity on all levels and we feel the visceral hum and rumble of Mill #3 fully alive. an assortment of special physical effects, 40 channels of discrete amplified sound, dynamic lighting effects and original visual re-creations on the large screen provide an unfor-gettable you-are-there experience.

• The electric train emerges from the tunnel and alerts the Mill to its presence with a bell.

• 20 cars rumble along the steel trestle with metal wheels.

• Each car dumps its load crashing into three steel ore bins

• Rocks tumble onto squeaking and rolling conveyer belts to the giant jaw crushers where the rocks are broken in a primary crush.

• Two large rocks get stuck in one of the steel bins and have to be loosened to fall onto the conveyer belts.

• We hear two whistle blasts followed by two dynamite blasts that shake the space, and we hear the shattered glass rattle across the metal roof, then we hear a single all clear whistle.

• Dust begins to fill the space at the top and creep down the skip shaft.

• Conveyor belts transport crushed rock from bins to a series of ball mills each set

producing finer crushed rock until it is a flour consistency.

• The dust gets denser and continues to creep down the skip tracks.

• Flotation tanks bubble and froth with compressed air being pumped into the process.

• Finally the slurry moves to the three thickening tanks on level 8.

• Concentrate is thickened, dried and shipped to smelters.

everything stops suddenly and we are returned to the look and feel of the abandoned Mill just as it was when we entered.

Then Brad tells us, in 1974, the mine closed and the Mill shut down. Britannia’s pioneering contributions to the mining industry and to Canada’s history are significant and preserved here at the Britannia Mine Museum.

Brad bids us goodbye and we move on to other exciting and informative experiences during our day here at Britannia Mine Museum.

What was it like to actually be there when the Mill was fully operational in 1924? Well, lets fire up the entire Mill Brad exclaims!

Part of the Concept Phase was prepa-ration and calculation of the cost for the creation of the Mill experience and events Plaza. a budget was developed with the input of all participating mem-bers of the Concept Phase Team. as the scope of work developed and the stake-holders requests were incorporated, the immersive experience was dramatically enhanced from the very preliminary concept outlined in the BMM road Map. The budget needed to be prepared in a way to explain and reflect those enhancements. as such, the budget has been broken down into sections to assist in this understanding.

The design and budget allows for optionality depending on funding levels. $2.5 million is the minimum required to achieve the Mill experience only with funding of $4.4 million achieving development of all three shows along with upgrading of the events Plaza entrance area.

The budget is made up of the best estimates from the corresponding specialists (architects, engineers, production team, etc.)

The Concept Phase Budget totals are to be set as maximums and any changes that may be required would be managed within those maximums under the approval of senior Project Team and the Project Oversight Committee.

The goal is to maximize the opening of the Mill experience by coordinating its opening to a premium audience time. FortheMuseummid-March2016isoptimal as the weather becomes better, the school break will increase attend-ance with the opening marketing push that would roll into the summer high season.
