Think We Before MePlease give to the

    United Way of Saginaw County

    P.u.n.k.d.By Bishop Ronald E. Chipp

    Okay, judging

from the title I knowsome of you may be

    thinking what in the

    world is Bishop Chipp

    doing? You may even

    be thinking, Whoa!

    is this preacher

    cussing? Please be

assured I am not cussing! In fact, I was raised

thinking if you ever said the wordbutt you

cursed. If I ever stepped out-of line as a

child and said someone got their butt kicked

in front of my parents, you can bet my own

butt well, uh lets just say my own butt

suffered! Even to this day when I read my

bible (King James Version), I have a hard

time saying out loud the word ass even

though it is used in reference to a donkey.

Now that we have that settled lets move on.

I was just sitting here in my homewatching the T.V. guide channel to see

if there was anything I wanted to watch

when I noticed that the T.V. guide channel

itself was playing a reality type show called

Punkd. I want to say up front that I

am not judging this show as good or bad!

In fact, I have watched it before and have

found it to be somewhat humorous at times

and sometimes stressful! I know its purpose

is just to entertain. But as I sit here today,my spirit is flooded with spiritual insight in

regards to this reality show. So please allow

me to make spiritual application here.

The dictionary defines the word punk

as: 1. a slang word for a rough violent

person who engages in destructive actions.

    2. An inexperienced youth (ex. - he is just

a young punk!). 3. To be weak in spirit or

    health/strength. To be punkd means

    someonetookadvantageofyou,oftenby

deception, and left you looking like a fool!

Again, I know the reality show that sparked

this blog posting is only intended as light-

hearted fun and entertainment. But please

know that there is a devil in this world who

wants to make this statement about your lifeyoubeenPunkd! I want you to know the

devil is not trying to punk you just for fun or

entertainment. He is trying to destroy your life

    and destiny through deception!

The title of this posting is P.u.n.k.d. It

is an acronym for People undermined not

knowing its the devil. Thats right; the devil

wants to punk you! He wants to set you up for

failure and defeat. Satan (the devil) wants to

undermine your life. He wants to undermine

your destiny in God. To undermine means: 1.

to lessen or deplete the energy or strength of. 2.

to damage, destroy, or defeat by sabotage. That

word sabotage is important. It means there is

a deliberate and underhanded effort to defeat

or do harm to an endeavor. The bible says the

devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking

whom he may devour. Some people dont even

believe there is a devil. If they do believe thedevil exists, they dont realize (or sometimes

forget) that the devil has strategies and tactics

to defeat, damage, and destroy their lives. That

is why the bible also tells us to notbeignorant

of his (the devils) devices; otherwise the devil

will have and take advantage of us.

Keep in mind I am only using the reality

show Punkd to make spiritual application.

But like the reality show the devil will set

you up! He will orchestrate situations andcircumstances to embarrass you and destroy

your testimony. He will bring about some

stress in your life which is intended to bring

out a certain response from you. That is, reveal

some character flaw in you. The devil loves

to get people to take a certain (un-biblical)

stand on an issue and then pull the rug out

from under them! Like the reality show, the

devil will also use strangers, friends and even

relatives through his evil influence to punk

you! I know the devil is a defeated foe. Our

Lord and Savior Jesus has already defeated

him for us! This is why he uses deception to

punk us! My intention is not to magnify the

    devil.Myintentionisthatwewouldnotbe

ignorant of the devils schemes giving himan advantage to punk us!

Often, while we are busy blaming others,

blowing up like a toad-frog with anger and

making excuses, it has been the devil working

all along! Listen folks, the devil will punk

you in your marriage, money, business

and in any area he can. He will have you

thinking people who love you hate you and

people who hate you love you. He will make

it appear as though people who are for youare against you and people who are against

you are for you! He will use your own pride,

selfishness and desires against you! He will

even use your own gifts and talents against

you because of some un-confessed or un-

recognized character flaw in your life.

So whats the answer to the devils desire

to punk you? First, we must make sure

we are in right relationship with God throughfaith in His Son Jesus Christ. Then we must

make sure we are in proper fellowship with

God! That is, truly walking with God on a

daily basis. In other words, we are not in a

back-slidden state! Next, we must constantly

hear, read and study the word of God (The

Bible) so we will not be ignorant of the

devils schemes. Finally, we must be sober

    (straightforward in character; characterized

by self-control; reasonable; rational),vigilant in prayer and resist the temptations

    of the devil.

In short, Im encouraging you to be fore-

warned of the devils schemes, be wise from

the word of God, and have a discerning spirit

and attitude in life. Please note it is not my

intention to make you paranoid and start

seeing demons behind every bush! Once

My husband, Henry G. Marsh, was an avid and devoted

believer in Saginaw Habitat for Humanity. He gave monetarily,

his time, his mental capacities in helping solve problems,

and his friendship because he truly believed in the concept of

helping those who were willing to help themselves to attain

affordable housing. It not only helps the family put down

roots but also gives the children of the family an example and

a stability that they might not have had before. We should all

thank God for Habitat for Humanity and do all we can to support their efforts as they

continue this much needed and essential work. Money---whether pennies or dollars-

--and people willing to give of their time and talents arewhat will keep this organization viable in our community,

building new housing or refurbishing older homes so that

affordable housing stays affordable. God Bless Habitat

for Humanity in all its endeavors.

    Editorials

The Image of SaginawBy Pastor Charles H. Coleman, D.C.E.For The Michigan Banner

    There is a great

    deal of discussion

    and consideration

    regarding the direction

    that the City of

    Saginaw must take

    over the next several

years as we continueto rebuild our

    community. Rebuilding our community

is not an overnight process as it did not

take just a few years for our community

to reach the level of problems that we

are dealing with right now. Much of the

discussion should be based on how, we, as

citizens and residents of this community,

approach and care for our community.Several years ago a nickname was

adopted for our community that many

of us really dislike. This nickname is

SAGNASTY. This is one of the worst

tags that could be put on a community. This

nickname suggests that this is a community

that is not worth living in. It suggests that

it is a dirty community. It suggests that

the residents of the community are vulgar,

dirty, and backward. It is not a name thatcan be worn with pride. People who hear

    this nickname are convinced, without

visiting the community, or meeting the

people here, that it is not a good place to

live, work and raise a family.

This is not true. Saginaw is a good place

to live, work and raise a family. And it is

getting even better. While we may not get

back to the days when there were 40,000

General Motors type jobs in the area, we areseeing job growth in multiple sectors. While

we may never see a population of 100,000

again, the population drop has slowed, and

is slowly turning around. There are people

moving back into the City, and there are

companies looking at our community to

develop jobs and opportunities here. We can

help in this growth by making sure that the

image of our community is good. When we have to change the rules for

opportunities such as Friday Night Live so

that there is an age restriction that is not good

for our image. When we spend more money

on police protection than we do any sector

of the budget that suggest that our priorities

are misplaced. When the lead stories in

the news are always negatives, this is not

positive for our image. All of us have to be

involved in changing the image. Parents, the young people that are out causing the

problems are our children. We cannot lame

program organizers for working to insure

that their programs are successful. If we

want our children to participate, then, we

have to go with them to the programs and

    keep them under control.

We cannot blame the media for

    publishing the negative stories, but

we can ask them to also talk about the positives that are happening in our

community. Where were the stories about

the successful Gospel Fest? Where are the

positive stories about the summer youth

program at the Houghton Jones Resource

Center this summer? Where are the

positive stories about all of the Vacation

Bible Schools going on in the community?

Where are the positive stories about thedevelopment of New Life Ministries and

    their community recreation area? Know

that positive stories dont sell ads, but

they do move the image of a community.

We should have a contest looking for

a positive nickname for Saginaw. I am

asking all of us to stop using the nickname

Sagnasty, and come up with something

that better shows what a great community

    we live in.

Dying Father Inspires SVSU Student to Great SuccessChandler Benjamin

    is the kind of student

all professors dream ofgetting, in the words

    of Alan Freed, Clifford

    H. Spicer Chair

    in Engineering at

    Saginaw Valley State

    University. Freeds

    dream student is the

product of a dying fathers dream for his son.

I visited my father in the hospital a week

before he passed, Benjamin recalled. He

told me, Son, you need to get up and go

back to school and do something with your

life. Right after that conversation, I got in

my car, drove to SVSU and applied for the

    physics program.

In the three years that followed, Benjamin

compiled an impressive record of achievement.

He served as president of SVSUs physics club.He has been inducted into the physics honor

society Sigma Pi Sigma. While a student, he

even served on a search committee to select

    new physics faculty.

A resident of Saginaw, Benjamin, 35, had

completed an associates degree at Washtenaw

Community College in Ann Arbor. For several

years, he worked in various entry-level jobs.

    Benjamin had reservations about returning

to school, but they quickly disappeared upon

    arriving at SVSU.

The commitment to the students is

extraordinary, Benjamin said. All of my

professors were willing to bend over backwards

    so that I succeeded.

    After graduating from SVSU Monday,

Aug. 15, Benjamin will take his talents to

the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics.

He is familiar with his destination, having

completed an internship last summer at the

    schools Synchrotron Radiation Center.

Freed, who worked for more than 20

years at NASAs John H. Glenn Research

Center, is confident Benjamin will stand out,

even among some of the brightest minds in

    physics.

He definitely has the raw talent to excel

in this chosen endeavor, Freed said, but

that is just a small piece of what it takes to

succeed in this discipline. It is his sincere

dedication and personal drive that will

    separate him from his peers.

    P.u.n.k.d.continued from page 2

again, this is not about magnifying the devil.

    Ifanyone isa punk itsthedevil! But

even punks can do a lot of damage if we

dont exercise our authority over them. The

bible teaches that the spirit we know now

as the devil was kicked out of heaven, fell

to earth, began to wreak havoc on Gods

people and was ultimately behind the evil

influences that motivated people to crucifyour Lord and Savior Jesus. But the bible also

tells us that God knew the devils plan and

used it to bring salvation to the world. In

fact, the bible says that if the princes of this

world (spiritual and otherwise) had known

the wisdom and plan of salvation God had

for humanity, they would not have crucified

the Lord of Glory! If this was written just

after Jesus was crucified, one might say

    devilyoujustgotPunkd!

Now is the Time!Dont wait until it is too late in the year to

look for an academic scholarship. Now is the

perfect time for any student, any age to begin

searching for college support. While money

may be available at your school of choice (ask

first in the financial aid department), there are

thousands of other options from corporate and

private sources. Use these tips to be ready to

apply for a scholarship at any time.

Tip 1 write a personal statement thatexplains why you need support. It should talk

about your goals, dreams, how the money will

change the trajectory of your life. Make it

compelling and heartfelt. If you are a student

in school, have a teacher or professor read it

and edit it to make it better. Keep it in a saved

file ready for when you find a source.

Tip 2 ask up to 5 unrelated people for

references. Get all of their contact information(email, address, phone, cell, etc). This is a time

consuming process that often holds up many

    applications, so start early!

Tip 3 get your familys financial

    information together. Youll need annual

income data, monthly expenses, and tax

returns at a minimum. Make copies and keep

them in a file for quick access.

Tip 4 clean up your social networking

sites. If you have negative comments, friends

to put up iffy photos or videos, or anything

that would cast you in a negative light, getrid of it. Make sure that you block anyone

    who could sabotage your efforts.

Tip 5 get help finding as many

scholarship sources as possible. Visit www.

This article isnt really about sports. Its

    about bigotry.

In baseball, the Detroit Tigers are battling

the Cleveland Indians for a championship.

Even if you do not care a lick about baseball,

check out the Cleveland Indians logo. Its

    a bug-eyed, buck-toothed chieftain painted

bright red with a savage grin and a combative

    head feather.

Randall Robinson, a scholar and activist

who published The Debt a decade ago,

included a chapter on racist team logos and

nicknames. He was watching a televised

ballgame. A star player at the time named

David Justice came to bat for Cleveland.

Justices jersey and helmet were resplendentwith the teams farcical wild Indian mascot.

Im looking at Justice, Robinson writes

with powerful irony. If the face on the logo

was black or brown (instead of red), it would

incite urban riots, so patent is its insult.

    Native Americans apparently are fair

game for this sort of unguarded bias because

so few of them survived the genocide of the

    18th and 19th centuries.

Consider the nickname for Washingtons pro football team. I wont include this

    nickname because The Michigan Banner

does not publish racial slurs, and this is the

R-word for persons of Native American

Cleveland Indians Logo Reflects Racism In Team Mascots And NicknamesBy Mike Thompson

    For The Michigan Banner

    heritage.

    Chippewas or Hurons or Seminoles,

are legitimate nicknames because they honor

peoples who occupied America long before

the Pilgrims. In contrast, the R-word is a

slur on skin color. There is no tribe or ethnic

group named for the R-word. Still, we hear

    sportscasters proclaim such ignorant inanities

as, The (R-words) massacred the (Dallas)

    Cowboys.

Racism may not be intended, but the effect

    is the same.

Randall Robinson finds cause to become

cynical and sarcastic. He imagines sports

nickname slurs against groups other than

Native Americans. He portrays a scenarioin which the Washington Blackskins, with a

logo portraying a caricatured Aunt Jemima,

prepare for a big game against the Chicago

Mafia, whose helmets display an image of

Al Capone. He asks how this would be worse

than the R-words mass circulation. Great

    question.

Fan behavior can be just as bad as team

logos or nicknames. Supporters of the Atlanta

Braves in major league baseball, the KansasCity Chiefs in pro football, and the Florida

State Seminoles in college sports, perform

mock tomahawk chops while filling the air

    with a war chant - OH, oh-OH-oh-oh ..... OH,

oh-oh-oh-oh. And theres some moron at

Cleveland Indians games who sits in the top

row and bangs a war drum to help get the

    spectators fired up.

Ive been asked, in effect: Well, Mister

Sensitive Caucasian, if youre so geeked

about these nicknames and mascots andlogos, then why dont you object to Notre

    Millions of

    Americans receive

    disability benefits

    from Social Security

    and there could be

    good news for many

    of those who want

    to work. A free and

voluntary programcalled Ticket to Work gives individuals

    who receive Supplemental Security Income

(SSI) or Social Security disability benefits

    access to meaningful employment while

    maintaining control over benefit choices.

Ed Bairos, a farmer and mechanic, went

back to the work he loved with the help of

the Ticket program. He began receiving

    Social Security disability benefits after

suffering from severe arthritis, complicated by a knee injury that would require 20

surgeries. He was concerned about losing

the cash payments and health care he needed

to survive and worried that employers might

    not want to hire him.

Then Bairos learned about the Ticket to

Work program when he received a notice

in the mail from Social Security. The notice

was a ticket that Bairos could use with

an employment network of his choosing.

    Employment networks are organizations

that offer specialized services such as career

    counseling, job search assistance, vocational

    rehabilitation and training. Bairos decided

to use his ticket with an employment

network and returned to work. He continued

to receive health care and cash benefits

because of work incentives, which are

special considerations that make it easier forbeneficiaries to explore whether going back

to work is right for them.

    Pleased with Bairos industry knowledge

and skills as a farm manager, his employer

gave him a promotion and a raise. Now he

is self-sufficient, working for another division

    within the company.

Bairos earns more money than he would

have by relying solely on disability benefits.

By using his Ticket, Bairos medical reviews

were put on hold and he is eligible to receive

    Medicare coverage

    for up to eight and

    a half years afterdiscontinuing his

    disability payments.

    Returning to

    work has made

    me whole again,

    especially being

    able to work in the

    area that I love. My

    self-esteem was

at its lowest whenI wasnt working

    and on disability.

    Returning to work

    not only improved

    my self-worth but

    also my financial

    wealth. The Ticket to

    Work program and

    the ability to keep

    my Medicare was the

    reason I was able to

    return to work, he

    said.

    If you receive

    Social Security or

    SSI benefits due

    to disability, are

    between 18 and 64

years old and want towork, getting started

    is easy.

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Eleanor Josaitis, Co-founder of Focus: HOPE, who devoted the last 43 years of her life to

making a difference in this community. She was such a remarkable woman, said CEO William F. Jones, Jr. Her loss is immeasurable, but

we are firmly committed and well positioned to make her work continue.

Focus: HOPE Co-founder Eleanor Josaitis, whose passion for justice gave hope and opportunities to countless thousands for well over

four decades, passed away August 9, 2011.

Josaitis died 14 years after the passing of Father William T. Cunningham with whom she founded Focus: HOPE in the wake of the 1967Detroit riots. At her side were her husband of 55 years, Donald; her five children, and other family and friends.

The housewife turned civil rights activist dedicated the last 43 years of her life to intelligent and practical action to overcome racism,

poverty and injustice as proclaimed in the Focus: HOPE mission statement. She became a national advocate for a food program designed to

meet the nutrition needs for children and seniors; a proponent of job training programs that gave women and minorities access to the financial

mainstream, and a passionate Detroiter who strove to revitalize the city and its neighborhoods.

Theres no greater way to eliminate racism and poverty than to see that people have education, skills, jobs and opportunities in life, she

    frequently said.

Josaitis is widely regarded as a leader who fought with courage and tenacity for causes close to her heart. She experienced the jubilation

of winning Congressional approval of a national food program that has assisted hundreds of thousands of low income families; the loneliness

of a lengthy, and eventually victorious, federal discrimination lawsuit against a local employer; and the satisfaction of providing job trainingand support services that have put more than 11,000 talented men and women into successful, good-paying careers. Eleanors passion and

vision will live on and be an inspiration as the work of Focus: HOPE continues.

    Mary Washington

    has a youthful energy

    and during our

    interview with her

    we also recognized

    the personality of a

    champion. Born in

    Opelousas, Louisiana,

    she would often as a

    young girl work in the

    cotton fields alongside her grandmother.

The faith of her grandmother would help

her to endure and to continue throughout

life no matter what the circumstances were.

She also credits her mother and father with

her community activist spirit. I remembermy mom and dad helping the neighborhood

when there was a need, she said. After

marrying she moved to Saginaw, eventually

becoming the mother of 6 children, five

    daughters and one son.

Continuing in the path of community

involvement, she saw a need in the

neighborhood when GM was laying off workers,

and begun to work with the unemployed and

    formerly incarcerated community members to

form programs and activities so they would not

return to their previous life. Also, she formed a

group, Baraka Actors for community activities

    for the youth.

Ms. Washington has been a member of

    numerous organizations, including American

Promise, NAACP and 1000 Leaders Initiative.

She has also been an 8 -year trustee of the

Library Board of Public Libraries in Saginaw.

At the urging of Ruben Daniels, Ms. Washington

applied for the position of a community affairs

specialist, and attained the position at the office

of U.S. Senator Carl Levin.I believe the most important factor in

society today is the youth, The youth need to

be inspired and helped by supplying the tools

needed to aid in their education, she says. As

founder of GYASC, Global Youth Awareness

Star Club, she believes a great work can be

done. The organization begun to function a

few months ago, but it has been in the creative

process for over a year. GYASC will help the

youth if they have a lack of resources, offer

free tutoring and items needed for school.

What is special about this group is that the

youth are the leaders, and is responsible for

planning the events and different topics that

are important to our teens today.

On August 27, at Union Park, Global

Youth Awareness Star Club will host a health

and education resources festival. The focus

will be on the many health issues that affect

the communities of today, such as, AIDS/HIV,

obesity, and cancer. Also, available will be

    information on business management, career

planning, writing, public speaking, and muchmore. Guest speakers will be there, including

nine year old, Angel Mykel Edwards, who

will be talking about the goodness of God.

    Ms. Washington believes that education,

making a difference, and thinking out of the

box will make a difference, and are the keys

    to a successful community.

    When I think about

    the game of basketball,

    I think about hanging

    with friends and

    playing a game, or

    two. I think the game

    of basketball is more

    than just balling,

    it is also leadership

and teamwork. Playing the game requires

great discipline because you must have exact

timing and be a good shooter so practice makes

perfect. Basketball is also an excellent way to

stay in shape throughout your young years,

and into adulthood, which is seen by our NBA

players. Another plus of course is the salary

    and travel around the world.

I guess you can tell I love the game and

have had dreams of a career in basketball, but

who hasnt had those dreams that play and

love the game. I have been playing for years

and I have never gotten bored with the game

because it is new each time. The game is

fun and I guess people think I should be a

natural, because I am 66. So when you

think of a sport that will give you great teamplay, will get you into shape, and is great fun.

    Think basketball!

Nowback to that dream, it is 2013,

    America Needs aComprehensive

Plan for the FutureBy Chet Allen

    In my opinion,

    every endeavor works

    best with a plan. What

    is Americas plan for

    energy, educating our

    youth, job creation,

    clean water waste

    disposal, and a

    sustainable safety-

net for our seniors? These are just a few

areas that need our immediate attention.

The music group Tower of Power told us

back in the 70s, There is only so much

oil in the ground. The possible energy

alternatives are known, and some are

in use, such as solar, wind, and nuclear.

However, this piece-meal approach willnot get the job done.

There has been a lot of recent talk

and discussion about the fact that

    American oil companies are government-

subsidized. They are, and have been since

the early 20th century. This policy was

initiated during the time it became clear

the automobile was here to stay and a

fueling network needed to be established

nationwide (along with roads and bridges). The Federal Government took

on the role of subsidizer to this private

    industry, presumably in the National

Interest, and in the process created an

    environment in which multiple industries

    would grow; including oil, automobile,

    steel, agriculture, construction, textile,

and shipping to name a few, leading to

the Gilded Age and a second Industrial

    Revolution.

Last yearBig Oil, as an industry, made

more in profit than any other industry

in world history. Two things are now

clear. Big Oilno longer needs subsidies,

and, since there is only so much oil in the

ground, it is time, as a national plan toinvest our monetary resources in the energy

of the future. Another thing is clear as well,

    special interestgroups have gained so

much influence over government it will be

extremely difficult for this Nation to move

as one.Chet Allen is an accomplished musician

and plays often in the Great Lake Bay

    Region.

Project 26 USA Making a DifferenceBy James Falls

    The Michigan Banner

    Flint- Its been three

    years since the former

    Flint and Saginaw

    resident Rickey

    Hampton Sr., had a

    vision of bringing the

    best basketball players

    from both cities to

    compete in an all-star

game. With the help of the InternationalAcademy of Flint, the vision is still a reality.

On July 30, Hampton, founder and

president of Project 26 USA, hosted his third

annual Saginaw vs. Flint all-star game at the

International of Flint. The game was to honor

students who have excelled in the classroom

and on the basketball court. Project 26 USA

is a program that encourages young students

    to stay in school.

The girls game lost its excitement when

a lack of communication happened amongst

the coaches and the players and only four

players from Saginaw arrived. Some couldnt

get rides out there (Flint) and the other were

late by the time we took off from our meeting

spot, said celebrity coach Flynn Hall. The

game would have been more thrilling if we

would have had more girls play. Showing no

remorse, the Flint girls took advantage and

cruised past Saginaw, 84-54, despite that the

    game was only 4-on-4.

Kathy Thomas from Flint Hamady was thegame MVP with 21 points. She will take her

talents to Highland Community College in

Highland, Kansas. Thomas enjoyed the game,

but really wanted to take on all of Saginaws

best. The game would have been much more

fun if all of the Saginaw girls would have

    shown up.

The Saginaw boys had a different outcome.

Down by 23 points early in the second half,

Coach Randy Rogers from Valley Lutheran

called a time-out in order for his team to

regroup. During the timeout, coach told us to

keep our heads and to play our game, said

Derrick Washington of Buena Vista. After the

timeout, the Saginaw all-stars drained eight

    3-pointers to take a one-point lead, which

eventually secured a 113-99 win against the

    Flint all-stars.

    Washington and Steven Juengel of

Bullock Creek were the co-MVP of the

    game.

Juengel, who was the leading scorer with28 points, made a statement to the people in

the gymnasium. I just played my game,

    Juengel said. Everybody underestimated

me because my school is small and nobody

usually knows about it. Washington has

signed with Delta College and Juengel is

looking to walk-on at Grand Valley State

    University.

Hampton was satisfied with the outcome

for the third consecutive year. Each year the

event just keeps getting better and better,

Hampton said. According to Hampton, a

student drops of out school every 26 seconds,

reasoning for the contribution to the name of

the foundation. That saddens me that we

have so many young people dropping out of

school, Hampton said. We really have to

fix that in any way that we can.
