VISION

WE ARE A COMMUNITY

COMPELLED BY THE LOVE

OF CHRIST TO MAKE A

DIFFERENCE IN A WORLD

IN NEED.

Have you ever thought about where the word mentor originated?

Here is the Merriam Webster version:

“We acquired "mentor" from the literature of ancient Greece. In

Homer's epic The Odyssey, Odysseus was away from home fighting

and journeying for 20 years. During that time, Telemachus, the son

he left as a babe in arms, grew up under the supervision of Mentor,

an old and trusted friend. When the goddess Athena decided it was

time to complete the education of young Telemachus, she visited

him disguised as Mentor and they set out together to learn about

his father. Today, we use the word mentor for anyone who is a posi-

tive, guiding influence in another (usually younger) person's life.”

Strawbridge Mentors making a difference…

Mission Opportunity Over 30 at-risk ninth graders are receiving sup-port through Mission Milby's Mission Opportuni-ty program which began in August, 2016. Mis-sion Opportunity is a collaborative program with Milby High School which motivates students to stay in school, grow and eventually gradate. Each student receives services such as case management, leadership training, tutoring, mentor support, and more. Under the leadership of Ms. Maria Aguilar, the program has quickly become a success. Mission Milby is grateful to the Texas Methodist Foundation, the Permanent Endowment Fund of the Moody Memorial United Methodist Church, the Heartspring Foundation and the Strawbridge United Methodist Church for the recent major grants/gifts that will help sustain this important program over the next twelve months. We continue to seek new mentors and tutors for these students. If you are interested, you may sign up here, or contact Ms. Aguilar at [email protected] or by phone at 713.454.6417.

Dear friends:

The parishioners at Strawbridge UMC in Kingwood

were welcoming and delighted to have the opportunity

to purchase the art! We sold 208 paintings. We

took in cash and checks totaling $720.

If you can, please send a note of gratitude to the pastor

and to Trish King, the staff person who very actively

helped with this sale. Both Trish and her husband were

present all morning to help set up, help sell, and help

disassemble. Trish identified herself as a seminary

colleague of Rudy's, and was excited to help out!

Thank you!

Joe
