Are You Empty? Then

Fill It Up!

I recently heard a young man say, “Empty!” That’s our culture, too

many empty lives.

According to many mental health professionals, we’ve become a culture

of empty selves. One went on to explain:

American culture has shaped a self that experiences a

significant absence of community, tradition, and shared

meaning. It experiences these social absences as a chronic,

undifferentiated emotional hunger…the empty self seeks the

experience of being continually filled up by consumer goods,

calories, experiences, politicians, romantic partners, and

empathetic therapists in an attempt to combat the growing

alienation and fragmentation of its era. One of the wealthiest

nations on earth is also one of the emptiest.

Today, we see people cope with this inner emptiness in a myriad of

ways, from chronic consumerism, drug and alcohol addictions and

sexual immorality, and don’t forget the (entertainment capitol of the

Northwest) casinos!

Am I sounding too cynical? Along with the above abuse and destruction

that comes to persons, families and our communities through various

addictions, it’s the inner spiritual harm that is so insidious and is the

real reason people turn to addictions in the first place. It’s our painful,

empty selves in a culture that doesn’t have good answers for those who

are in pain. All addictions are poor substitute saviors that are an

inadequate replacement for the real thing. Addiction behaviors only

anesthetize people for a few fleeting moments or hours but cannot

satisfy empty, hurting souls. They only compound the brokenness and

multiply the destruction of self-centered godless living.

Those who are addicted find themselves as both the antagonists and

victims in God’s story - people who are desperately seeking salvation, a

rescue that is found only in knowing, following and obeying Jesus

Christ.

When the self-righteous Pharisee questioned Jesus about the wrong company that he was keeping,

Jesus made it clear what his mission was all about. “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the

sick. I have come not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:7

Our culture is desperately sick, looking for any type of substitute savior. These false gods of wealth,

consumerism and pleasure can’t give peace or liberty to the captives or restore spiritual sight to the

blind. The Apostle Paul said, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under

heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” It is Jesus who rescues, redeems, transforms

and gives empty lives a real peace and fullness. This good news gets better as we are saved from our

old desperate lives of sin and failure, yes, empty living, to a new life of peace and freedom that is full

of grace, love, and Holy Spirit power.

This life is marked by self-control and love for God, self, and others in new community called the

church. This is the emphasis of the New Testament.

Who controls your life? God needs to have first place and his word is a great guide. The Holy Spirit is

available to help you each day. So take it easy this summer and keep your life filled with God’s

presence. Keep your spiritual tasks full of the word and the person of the Holy Spirit. If you need

help, come and see me! See you Sunday, Bible in hand, family and friends with you.

Operation Christmas Child

1) Pre-printed GO shoeboxes will be available for your personal use in October. Please consider packing a shoebox or two and bring joy to kids in need around the world. It’s a good idea to buy school supplies ahead of time for them during Back-to-School sales in July and August. Packed boxes are due in early November.

2) This year, we already have 100 partially packed shoeboxes which need the following if you

want to bring in donations to finish off the boxes: school supplies and hygiene items. The best deals are at Wal-Mart for 17 cents notebooks, 25 cents crayons, 50 cents colored pencils and markers, 97 cents pencils, and 10-pk washcloths; at Walgreens weekly deals for pens and erasers; at Dollar Tree for 3-pk soap and 6-pk plastic cups. Bring your donations in any time and give them to Phuong Phan-McManamna. Thanks!!

We're coming to the U.S. and we want to see you! After 1 year in France and 2 years in Congo, we are coming to the United States for our first U.S. Assignment. We arrive in Seattle on June 25. We want to see you, to share about our work and to hear about you and what's happening in your life. Though our summer is mostly booked we will have lots of time in Fall and Winter to travel and speak.

We will get them on the calendar soon!

What happened in Cambodia?

We saw about 20 people saved, 12 people physically healed and shared the gospel with these people and so many more! I had never known much of the history of Cambodia, but we learned a lot about that and saw the effects of the genocide where almost a whole generation was lost. God showed us that the hope for this country is in the children. 80% of the population is in their 30’s or younger. The church are filled with children! Our base in Montana is partnering with Battambang to “Reach the Nation in One Generation.” Different ways we served the people in Cambodia was through prayer, teaching English, working in the preschool, sharing at a drug rehab center and serving the local ministries that we were partnering with. Even with the short notice of leaving for Cambodia, Ben & I are so glad we went and our team accepted us really quickly. God’s grace was with us the whole time.

It was hard to say goodbye to these kids and there were a lot of tears but we loved spending time teaching them English and playing games with them for a week. We got to visit one of the seven wonders of the world! While we were here, one student prayed for a ladies knees and she was healed! God moves even at ancient temples.

This Summer - The Biondi’s have been training since getting back from Cambodia for the school we staff during the summer - Endurance Discipleship Training School. Our students come this week! Please be praying for them as they lean more of who God is and what it means to be His disciple. Also be praying for Ben and I as this is a quick turn over. School of Biblical Studies - This is officially happening! We got accepted while we were in Cambodia and we are so excited! It starts in September and we be students for 9 months. Ben & I have been dreaming of this for years and we are full of anticipation. We don’t know how much it will cost for us as staff, but we will send that out when we know. Ben & I have saved around $400 for it so far. We would so appreciate it if you could pray and ask God if he would like you to donate towards this. We can’t do it on our own, but we know God will provide. He always has!
