Here are a few wise tips on staying cool and hydrated

Stay in air-conditioned buildings (like the LSC) as much as possible. Besides we love seeing you!

Do not rely on a fan as your main cooling source when it’s really hot outside.

Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink.

If your doctor limits the amount of fluids you drink or has you on water pills, consult how much you should drink in hot weather.

Limit the use of your stove or oven to keep from making your home hotter. Wear loose, lightweight, light colored clothing. If you engage in strenuous activity know your limitations and get plenty of rest. Check on a friend or neighbor and if you’d like, ask any LSC staff member to do

the same for you. Check the local news for health and safety updates and stay informed. “Safety at any age is wise; safety and wisdom at our age is expected.” Keep Moving – Sean

Activities and Education

Carolyn’s Corner Book Club

The Book Club is currently reading and will meet and discuss The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot on August 3 and 17 at 10 a.m. in the conference room on the second floor. The book club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month and is open to all. The September reading, being announced here, will be Brooklyn by Colm Toibin and will be discussed on September 7 and 21. Colm Tóibín's sixth novel, Brooklyn, is set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, when one young woman crosses the ocean to make a new life for herself. Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War II. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America – to live and work in a Brooklyn neighborhood "just like Ireland" – she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love with Tony, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future.

America the Beautiful

If you want to take advantage of the $10

Lifetime Senior National Park Pass, you need to do

it by August 28, 2017. Beginning August 29, the price will go up to $80 for

a lifetime senior pass. You must be 62 years old

to purchase one. You can purchase a pass

at any National Park.

National Senior Citizens Day Tuesday, August 21

This day was created as a day to support, honor and show

appreciation to our seniors and to recognize your achievements. Your valuable contributions to our communities

create better places to live.

Five Ways to Respond to Panhandling

If you are ever approached by someone asking for money on the street or in the parking lot please follow

these tips!

Do not give cash – if you really want to help someone in need you can keep small gift cards for food or gas. Treat the person with respect – you don’t know the

person’s situation so please speak to them in a friendly and respectful manner.

Donate to organizations – if you really want to help the homeless, please donate to organizations such as the United Way’s LEXGIVE instead of giving directly to panhandlers.

Encourage the person to get help – know some basic information about local organizations that can help and provide the person with this

information. Take precautions – Always speak with a panhandler in areas where other people can see you. Don’t give out ANY personal information.

Nutrition site Stay cool and hydrated this month as August is typically very hot and humid!!! Did you ‘dig a little deeper’ into discovering more about yourself like I encouraged you to do last month? If so, what did you find? Are you motivated to learn more, get more involved, share more with others? I hope so. You can do those things right here. There are so many opportunities at the Lexington Senior Center for each of you. Every time I peruse the monthly newsletter, I am in awe of everything available to our participants. I encourage everyone to add something new and different to your repertoire this month. Try an activity you have wanted to do, but just have not done yet. If you only come once or twice a week, come on a different day and meet other people. If you have not signed up with me for nutrition services (daily lunch), please call me to set an appointment. Each meal provides one-third of your daily nutritional requirement. While the meals are not free, any donation amount is accepted and appreciated. I enjoy seeing you all each day and value what you share in your time, thoughts and ideas. Blessings!!! Emily
