Summer Sounds, cont’d.

The Wednesday, July 13 program will feature Roland Guerin and his band. A Southern University alum, Guerin has studied and played many different styles of music. Inspired by Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, Guerin offers an entirely new and singular take, one that integrates American folk melodies, blues, zydeco, African rhythms, rock, jazz soloing and orchestral arrangements. At the heart of his music are stories, told through multiple layers of simple compositions that come together to create a complex yet lucid sound.

New Orleans pianist Tom Worrell makes his Summer Sounds debut appearance on July 20. Worrell worked with Solomon Burke’s band for years and is a devotee of the music of James Booker and Professor Longhair whose music, he says, is, “…a template for New Orleans piano style that informed Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Bill Payne & others; as an eccentric pivot point inclusive of clave, junker piano, blues, boogie

woogie, fractured stride, rumba, funk, Bach, Rock, R&B & nursery rhymes; as a composer of such eccentric music that was inspired by survival, joy, and humor that it remains relevant today.”

The 2016 season will conclude on July 27 with a return performance by Chris Thomas King. King, who was last at Summer Sounds in 2012, is a Baton Rouge native and the son of the famed Tabby Thomas. King has enjoyed a well-traveled career through the US

and Europe as well as a blues journey from traditional through a bold hip-hop influence found in his album, Antebellum Postcards, which displays his broad range incorporating folk, blues and a hint of Nashville along with energetic rock sensibilities. King’s performance in the Coen brother’s film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? was the only piece recorded live during filming, and was part of the Grammy award-winning soundtrack.

Individual tickets are $10. Season ticket packages are available at $30 for all four concerts. Friends of Summer Sounds sponsorship is $75 and includes two (2) season ticket packages. Patrons of Summer Sounds will receive four (4) season ticket packages for $150. Sponsorship helps support the program continuation and will be individually acknowledged in the concert programs. Reservations and donations can be made online at www.stjamesbr.org, or from the church office: 225-387-5141.

For your consideration …

and more for

Millennials at st. James

Are you between the ages of 25-35, or do you know someone that age who’s looking to get involved at St. James? Your fellow Millennials are here and you aren’t alone!

We want to know who you are so we can keep you in the loop and those people who would like to be involved in our efforts. If you’re interested and want to be included, please email Alyce Howe!

In the Episcopal Church, we believe in an idea described as “the priesthood of all believers.” It is a belief that all people who believe in Jesus Christ are called to minister, not only to each other, but to all the people we meet and live with.

And, by ministering we don’t mean preaching but caring for and nurturing others, showing God’s love not just through words, but also through actions.

The Episcopal Church also believes in education.

About thirty years ago, people at the Episcopal Seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee decided to develop a curriculum that would provide a basic theological education to lay Christians. Thus, Education for Ministry was born.

Members of a group meet each week to discuss reading materials that provide a basic education in the history of Christianity and contemporary theological issues. It is a four-year program, but students commit to only one year at a time.

The first year is devoted to reading and understanding the Old Testament; the second focuses on the New Testament; the third on the history of the Christian Church; and the fourth on contemporary theological issues.

The discussions are led by mentors who act more as moderators to keep the discussions on topic, rather than as teachers.

Mother Mary Ann Garrett and Dr. Ann Holmes will serve as mentors for an EfM group during the 2016-2017 year.

It will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please contact Mother Mary Ann, [email protected], or 225-387-5141 (direct number, 225-421-3540) or Ann Holmes, [email protected].

More information is also available at efm.sewanee.edu/.

Openings are available on 9 and 11 o’clock usher teams! For more information, contact Kyle Landrem at [email protected].

the Bad Girls are currently reading Room by emma donoghue, in preparation for the June gathering on Monday, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. at laMadeleine’s on Jefferson highway.

In a change from the original selection for July (due to its limited availability), the July book is a Man called ove by fredrik Backman. the group will meet on Mon-day, July 18 to discuss.

r.s.v.p. to Monica Murphy to let her know you’re coming; email [email protected] or text 225-335-3572.

Family Movie Night: Wednesday, June 22Reminiscent of the days when families would pile into the station wagon for an evening at the drive-in, we’ll gather in Bishops Hall for dinner, popcorn, concessions, cartoons, and a family-friendly movie!

We’ll have another car contest, too!

On Wednesday, June 22, the Bishops Hall drive-in opens at 6:00 p.m.! Reservations required; $10 per “car” (family) will help defray expenses. Click here to register and/or pay online or contact Mary Boutwell for reservations, or more information: 225-387-5141.

Vestry Notes

In an informal gathering prior to the May   9 vestry meeting, Senior Warden Gerry Sulzer asked that each member of the Vestry share thoughts on calling Fr. Joe Reynolds as Interim Rector.

After the meeting was called to order, Josh Pesses presented the Treasurer’s re-port. He noted that contributions for the year to date are 14% below budgeted lev-els, and 21% below 2015 levels, and the financial situation will probably look worse before it gets better. Fr. Holland commented that highs and lows always happen when a rector leaves a parish, and that it is up to the Vestry to help the par-ish come to terms with giving.

A motion from the Finance Committee as submitted by the Property Committee for repiping the chilled water line at the east chiller to factory specifications was deferred until further engineering re-ports are received.

Michael Ferachi, President of Episco-pal School Board presented the Capital Campaign the School is undertaking. In-cluded in the campaign will be the chapel renovation, an innovative learning center, and athletic improvements, and asked for a pledge of $5000.00 from St. James, to be spread over several years. The request will be submitted to the Finance Committee for further consideration.

Andy McCall reported that there are con-cerns that there is some drifting away

from the Strategic Plan, and there is a need to remind the parish of the plan. Another person will be added to the com-mittee to help with communications with the parish, and a person will be added to assist in measuring our success.

Josh Pesses reported that there are 288 signed contracts for 2016-17. Brent Gra-ham has reported that the school is doing well financially.

Gerry Sulzer reported that he had sent a letter to the Executive Board of the Diocese of Louisiana regarding the 2016 assessment, and another letter to the Diocese regarding the 2017 assessment, requesting a reduction in both. These reductions would be more in line with previous assessments; he presented data regarding the current financial position of St. James.

The vestry voted to call Fr. Joe Reynolds to be the Interim Rector at St. James. He will start July 1, 2016.

Fr. Holland reported that Rod Kennedy, ordained a Deacon at St. James in March, had been found to have withheld some personal information that should have been disclosed to Bishop Thompson prior to his ordination, and BishopThompson found it necessary to depose him.

Fr. Holland shared he was grateful for the time he has spent at St. James and proud of what the school has accomplished. He

is confident that the time is right for the next person to be with us. He stated that when he leaves, he leaves completely and will not be drawn into any issues.

At the April 14-15 vestry retreat, Canon John Kellogg was the facilitator for the Friday session and led discussions and exercises about, “How St. James is Viewed By....,” including newcomers, neighbor-hood, diocese, young families, and long-term members. The future picture of St. James was also discussed.

On Saturday, Boo Thomas made a pre-sentation about the physical campus and handed out proposed site plans. A final report will be made on August 24. The aim of CPEX is not to change programs or services, just to make it all more effi-cient physically and financially.

Josh Pesses presented budget informa-tion. He said that the budget has been formed piecemeal for a number of years and believes there should be a better way to do it. He stated that the budget as pre-sented is a deficit budget. One of three options of the presented budget was ap-proved. Senior Warden Gerry Sulzer said the budget could be amended in future meetings as necessary if additional pledg-es or financing becomes available, and put forward that our Interim Rector can play a role in changing how the budget is put together, as well as peer review with other churches.
