From the Rector:Antiphonal Organ, Chancel Beams, and Scout Lodge

The window frame for the Gage Ascension window is in place. The installment of this frame is the culmination of two years of work, dating back to Bruce Williams’ (chair of Building & Grounds) discovery that the old frame was disintegrating. Our architect, Carter Hord, developed a plan, which was the building of a new frame made of tubular steel and bolstered by cutting edge technology. Cheryl Stegbauer, our parishioner, made a very generous gift in order to pay for all of the work. With the frame in place and the stained glass in the process of being reinstalled, we have taken care of our largest stained glass window and the one window that was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. I cannot wait for the return of all the colors in this mysterious window.

Once the window is complete, the new antiphonal organ will be installed (see image to the left). Designed and built by Nichols & Simpson in Little Rock, Arkansas, this instrument will be beautiful to the eye and add a remarkable new dimension to our existing organ. The new organ has a console as well, which means that we can have dueling organists. The new organ can also be played from the existing console. Wesley Emerson, our organist and choirmaster, has waited a long time for this dream to become a reality. Grace-St. Luke’s is profoundly grateful for the vision and love of George and Betty Johnson, whose gift has made possible all of this work.

The Church Proper Committee, chaired by Sidney Hickey, oversaw the renovation. That committee includes Jimpsie Ayers, Antoinette Cheney, Frank Langford, Rob Norcross, Hallie Peyton, Anna Robbins, and myself. They have asked me to introduce their last project, which will occur in the fall. There are two arches in the chancel that are decorative (not structural), and that were added at the time that the chancel was expanded. The Church Proper Committee has enthusiastically approved the architect’s addition of molding to these two arches so that the eye has something to follow. These arches are based upon the existing proscenium arch, which is the arch at the entrance to the chancel (or choir). These moldings (see image to the left) will be built over the summer and installed in the fall. They are beautiful, historically appropriate, and consistent with the architecture of GSL. We are so grateful that two gifts from parishioners have paid for all of this work.

Last but not least, I am happy to announce that GSL School, the Scouts, and the Church have reached an agreement that will lead to the renovation of the Doan house in order to create a “Scout lodge” in the summer of 2017. The Doan house is the existing property to the right of Miss Lee’s that is owned by the School. Currently, all Scouting groups occupy a large space in the middle school, so this move accomplishes a number of things, including giving the School space to grow and giving all Scouting groups a premiere lodge in order to host a growing, diverse group of children. Dan Conaway ([email protected]), our parishioner who had the original vision for this project, will chair the Scouts' construction committee. One of the architectural renderings is to the left. I want to give thanks to God for Cynthia Saatkamp (our senior warden) and Patrick Burnett (our chancellor), who have guided this project on behalf of the Church. We are also very grateful that this renovation is made possible by a major gift from GSL School.

Rob Norcross (a member of the vestry and an architect) is the liaison for all of these projects. Thanks be to God for all of these visions, gifts, and fine people. –The Reverend Richard Lawson

For the July article that I normally do, please ask Amy to write something, say, a piece introducing herself to the parish. If she prefers, you could do a Q & A with her. For August, please ask Andy MacBeth to write an article.

The Gifts of Imperfectionby Brené Brown

A Three-Week Book StudyHosted by the Addiction and Recovery

Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee

July 13, 20, & 27, 6:30-7:30 pm

Recovery is not a destination, but a journey that continues through both the good days and the bad and each day we face

a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We make a daily choice to continue to move forward even when it may seem too difficult in the moment. In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown will engage our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate courage, compassion, and connection. For more information, contact commission co-chairs: Lucy Owens (272-7425, [email protected]) or Shannon Tucker (281-0785, [email protected]). Gallery Organ Installation Update

“Loud organs, his glory forth tell in deep tone…”Hymn 432, Laudate Dominum, verse 3

The gallery organ installation has begun! The chambers, or ‘boxes’, are shrouded temporarily for protection during the installation of the Ascension window. A section of the larger wooden pipes had to be installed before the casework was constructed, but the remainder of the organ is locked in the chapel until it travels to the gallery in a few weeks. Lucy has posted pictures (www.facebook.com/gracestlukes and www.flickr.com/gracestlukes) and included some here.

Pastoral Care CornerPastoral Care for New Parents

“Babies are such a nice way to start people.” – Don Herold

We in Pastoral Care could not agree more. If you are expecting a baby (or grandbaby) in the near future, please let us know. We want to make sure that new parents, whether through birth or adoption or foster care, feel the love and support of our parish community.

We do this in several ways:

• Meals delivered to your door. For each of the first four Wednesdays that you are home with your new baby, a member of our Pastoral Care Team will deliver a meal to you. Even if grandparents are staying with you to help, this will give them a much needed break and a chance to visit. Just let us know how many to prepare for and any special food preferences, and we will do the rest.

• A Thanksgiving for the Birth or Adoption of a Child. The birth or adoption of a child is a cause for great celebration. We can arrange for a member of our Pastoral Care Team to visit you in the hospital or at your home to pray through this short service of thanksgiving with you.

• The Prayers of the People. So that the entire parish can participate in praying for your family, we will let the parish know about the birth of your baby by reading his/her name during the Prayers on Sundays.

Please contact Amanda McGriff at 272-7425 office, 484-8735 cell, or [email protected] to let us know about your happy news.

Pastoral Care Requests: To submit a pastoral care request, please complete the Pastoral Care Requests form on the GSL website under the Member Central Tab (www.gracestlukes.org/member-central/pastoral-care-requests). Requests sub-mitted through this online form will be emailed directly to the appropriate lay staff and/or clergy. Alternately, you may call the church office or email Amanda McGriff, Director of Pastoral Care, at [email protected].

Thank You: Thank you to the family of Dr. James McClure for donating the beautiful flower arrangements from his funeral to Pastoral Care for delivery to those in need in the parish. Your generosity and thoughtfulness are truly appreciated.

Troop 34 Eagle Project UnderwayMembers of Grace-St. Luke's Church, my name is Conner Rasberry and I have attended this church and grown up in it all my life. I am currently a Junior at Christian Brothers High School and I am a Life Scout in Troop 34 trying to move on to Eagle. To advance, I must complete an Eagle Scout service project. I am doing my project at St. Columba Episcopal Conference Center and it is at no expense to the beneficiary. I plan to build an outdoor sanctuary that will have seating for up to fifty people, a fire ring, and a ten foot tall cross. They will be able to use this area for religious services as well as camp activities. My total project is estimated around $1000.

Please consider helping me become an Eagle Scout of Troop 34. If you can donate to my project it would be greatly appreciated no matter what the contribution. Please make checks out to Troop 34 with the indicated purpose of Conner Rasberry's Eagle project. You can mail this to Tracy Adkisson, our troop treasurer at 1234 Central Ave., Memphis, TN 38104. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Conner Rasberry ([email protected])

Many thanks to Father Richard, Rev. Broderick, Mary Margaret Winn, and all the staff at GSL Church for the invaluable help and support during our special year-end Honors Chapel and Graduation ceremonies. We love showing GSL church to our guests, and the services were beautiful as always!

We will also have a number of faculty transitions for the coming school year, which we will publish here next month.

On the admissions front, there are still spaces available in selected grade levels for the 2016-17 school year. We always appreciate your help in spreading the word about the great program here at GSL. You may know of families who are relocating to Memphis this summer; we’d love to show them the school! Outreach Ministry

MORE THAN A MEAL: A Ministry of Hospitality & Dignity

For fifteen years, More Than A Meal (MTAM) has been the primary outreach program for Grace-St. Luke’s. A ministry of hospitality and dignity each Sunday afternoon, the program provides a hot, sit-down meal, music, prayers and conversations for over 400 guests each month. Most of our guests are Midtown poor, elderly, families, and some homeless. Cooking teams from 5 churches and serving teams from 10 churches and 7 schools provided 11,000 plates of food last year with smiles and prayers. It is a joyful way to serve the Lord in the Gospel imperative to feed the hungry.

During the recent church renovations, MTAM “picnicked” in the Saint’s gym, and our guest numbers greatly declined. Returning to Trezevant Hall we have celebrated a return to above normal attendance. Although deeply saddened by the recent death of Dr. June Mann Averyt, the MTAM family also celebrates her instrumental leadership in training teams and volunteers to be helpful and comfortable with the homeless and marginalized during the founding years. We will miss her big laugh and smile.

As summer approaches, our youth community service volunteers have completed their hours, and many regular serving families are on vacation. GSL parishioners are encouraged to volunteer during summer months.

To volunteer, contact Team Captain: 1st Sunday–Happy Jones ([email protected]), 2nd Sunday–Debbie Sweeney ([email protected]), 3rd Sunday–Ruthie Lentz ([email protected]), 4th Sunday–Edith Heller ([email protected]), and 5th Sunday–Murray McKay ([email protected]).

Additionally, special summer needs are: suntan lotion, lip balm, deodorant, soap, and razors. These items can be dropped off at the church office or when you come to volunteer on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00. Looking forward to seeing you!

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

We received a large amount of canned goods from Calvary Episcopal Church. This was a Pentecost project organized by Christine Todd, Community Ministries, at Calvary. As always, we can count on the help of GSL students and this time Ms. Brooke Shannon, Director of After School Care and Enrichment, brought a group of students who helped separate and box all the canned goods – THANK YOU! We are grateful to have this collaboration with Calvary and we pray we can continue to help each other. I understand that Rector Chris Girata collected a large amount of the canned goods that we received. We appreciate your effort!

April Statistics: Number of families served: 41 households, which included 67 adults, 58 children, and 12 seniors.Volunteer hours: 18 hours, which included 8 hours distributing food, 3.5 hours in Food Bank pick-ups and shelving, 2 hours shopping and shelving, 4.5 hours cleaning and re-stocking (not including the hours spent by volunteer packers).

Mark your calendar! The last Sunday of the month—June 26—is FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY! We are asking that you bring dried milk, tooth paste, peanut butter, cereal, and hygiene products.

Welcome to our new volunteer: Lynn Alberson. Volunteers are always needed! To volunteer, contact Happy Jones at [email protected] or 276-2136.
