Received from IMB, Tues., March 15
Disaster assessment team arrives in Tokyo
A two member Southern Baptist disaster relief assessment team arrived in Tokyo March 12. Thousands of survivors
are coping with near freezing temperatures for hundreds of miles along Japan’s northeastern coast. IMB missionaries
have been assisting their neighbors and communities in cleaning up after the quake. The assessment team will explore
links with Japanese Baptists, the Japanese government and the communities. Once the assessment has been completed
and a blueprint guide of relief efforts made, Baptist Global Response and the IMB expect to move into a broad relief
initiative in partnership with churches of the Japan Baptist Convention. Working through those congregations, who
have deep ties in the local communities, will ensure the effectiveness of relief efforts. It also guarantees donations
will be used efficiently, since a portion of gifts will not have to be diverted to cover overhead expenses. The IMB
(International Mission Board) has established a relief fund for the Japan earthquake. For further information call
your associational mission center at 731-285-2727.
Mt. Vernon Baptist Church will be participating in the Shoes 4 Souls Minis-
try and are sponsoring a shoe drive. They are collecting slightly worn shoes or
new shoes throughout the month of March and April. A collection box has
been set up at Dyer Baptist Association. A mission representative from Mt.
Vernon can help you set up a box in your church also. Please contact Mona
Ozment at 676-3985 if you would like to participate by sitting up a donation
box at your church or drop off your shoes at the association office.
