    "penance"A C C E N T U A T E T H E P O S I T I V ELent is a season foff penance, and, for som e reason oro ther , everyone seem s to connect the wo rdwith a list of "don't" o f "I won't." I won't go tom ovies du ring Le nt. I wo n't e at candy o r drink coke s.I wo n ' t ta lk in c lass or w ri t e | l e t t ers w hen I shou ld betaking notes . These ,small,}but difficult , penances tareindeed com m endable . I f they are offered to Gdd in thecorrect spirit , they will be ^rewarded richly by Him .Howe ver , the e m phasis i s on the word "not."We ar eaccentuating the negative side of Lent. |I The re is a positive side to this holy season, too . Itdoes not necessi ta t e a long jjlist of "I wo n'ts." On thecontrary, a short list of "I wills" would be justljas effective, if not m ore so . In the first place, a short listcould m ore e asily be carried o u t; a few things done toperfec tion are m uch m ore m er i tor iou s than m any things

only half accom plished. 1 As for the i t em s on the l i s titself, why couldn't we planjto do our everyday tasksm ore thorou ghly, doing them wi th perfec tion for thelove of God? Why not a t tend Mass and Com m unionevery day, pay closer attention to the Massfwhenfthere,do o u r hom ework mo r e tho r o ugh ly , o r k e ep o u r ro omin a neater and cleaner condition than we have been?Ther e a re so m any m o r e "Ijjwills" that can help purgeou r sou ls for that grea t Easter m orning. However ,w e m u s t re m e m b e r to-?keep the list short , yet effective. There are som e things thatare..,harderA o r .some.to.dothan o thers. We must? choose those that are the hardest , those that we wi l l sure ly carry through, those jthatwill m ore e fficiently help to lighten C hrist's burden onCalvary. In othe r wo rds, we should accentuate the positive side of Le nt. It is m o rel difficult tojobserve thanto avoid; but, because of ] th is , i t is the superior way,and Christ will reward it accordingly.
