THE MAYOR'S WELCOME I AM SURE it i ~ a great delight to me to have the

It is many years since "Sydney By The Sea" has become irresistible to thousands of Canadian and American tourists who come, and go, each successive year finding new and unexpected beauties amidst the glens, valle)'s, hidden nooks and numerous lakes, which surround the city only waiting to be enjoyed to the full by the entranced visitor, whether he is on his first Visit or in the midst of his regular annual pilgrim­age a mongst scenes a nd friends which he has learned to know a nd love.

The first setller made his appearance in what is now Sydney in May, 1784 and later 3,OOQ - 'niled Empjr~ Lo;alists \\'ere attracted from the revolting Col­oniesto theSouth. Cape Breton Island is noted for the beauty of its scenery and for its fishing. Mr. Ramsay MacDon­ald, on retur:lling from his visit to Canada last autumn, said he liked Cape Breton best of all the places he yisited."

Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarro. was born in 1722. Having selcclL--d the army as his profession he entered the 6OtI~ Regiment. In 1756, when occupying the position of lieutenant, he was sent to America. At the second .iege of Louisburg he so distinguished himself by his ulo.:n,-:ry and ~ngineeTill~.~kijj lliaL General \ruUe ~Jkcially mentIOned hun to the h.mg, as a result of which honor he was ordered to accompany that General as engineer on the famous expedition against Quebec. When Wolf. rereived his death wound upon lhe heights of Abraham DesBarres was just reporting to him an order he had executed. He continued to sen'c in Canada for the two succeeding years, and in 1761 went to NOTa Scotia to prepare plans and estimates for fortifying the harbour of Halifax.
