The Manly Arts Festival, MYC Creative Exhibition It’s official – we are an arty lot! As part of the 2004 Manly Arts Festival, our exhibition co- ordinator Ian Dennewald and his committee are busy organising an exhibition to showcase the creative works of over 25 of our members. This exciting event will run through Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of September. A handcrafted strip cedar kayak, a painted surfboard, a wooden Ned Kelly and paintings from the outback are just some of the works that will be on display. If you would like to be a part of this special event and have artworks other than paintings - its not too late to get involved; just call Judy Richardson on 9938 2271 or email her on [email protected]. President’s Report The wharf deck repairs have finally been completed. The entire wharf has new beams and decking timbers. Thanks to those members who gave up their Saturdays to help with the repair work. It is another job well done by our national champion volunteers. Colin Cameron deserves a special mention. Not only did he work on weekends with the team but he also worked many days during the week on his own. This was a great effort given the heavy beams that we used. We used approximately 30 tonnes of hardwood timber including 2 kilometres of deck planks. The wharf still needs some more repairs. The piles in the centre of the deck require concrete encasement and some external piles need replacement but that work is not critical (yet). It has been a fantastic year for the Club. Our membership has increased significantly, our revenue is up by more than 43%, hall hire revenue more than doubled and our consumption of Tyrrell’s wine increased by more than 50%. JOURNAL OF MANLY YACHT CLUB P.O. Box 22 Manly NSW 1655 Tel: 02 9977 4949 Fax: 02 9977 3573 Email: [email protected] www.myc.org.au We now have a new web address www.myc.org.au The change from .com to .org brought the Club $10,000 plus GST in additional revenue. If you have not visited our web site recently, try the new web address and take a look. Ken Terrens and Nick Jenkins have done a fantastic job bringing our web site up to date. The last Board meeting marked the end of an era. It was Bruce Davis’ last board meeting as Commodore and just to demon- strate that you can teach an old sea dog new tricks, Bruce completed his last Commodore’s report in less than 10 minutes. At some meetings, these reports went on for hours. The Board was so impressed with this effort that we asked Bruce to stay on as Commodore for a few more years. Bruce declined the request because we have a new Commodore eagerly waiting to take over the reins (or should that be the sheets?). Bruce has been the driving force behind the sailing management of the Club for about 16 years and without his leadership, the Club would not be successfully running the number and quality of sailing events that we currently run. We all wish Bruce and Pam fair sailing during their upcoming cruise north. The big beautiful picture! NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2004 - 2005 Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of Manly Yacht Club and election of Office Bearers for 2004 - 2005 will be held at the Clubhouse on Saturday 26th June 2004. All positions on the Board of Directors are open for nominations. The Club is required to have a Board consisting of the office bearers and up to twelve other directors. The Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore and at least five other board members must be boat owners. Only financial members may vote at the Annual General Meeting. Persons who are not members are invited to attend the meeting. AGENDA Notice convening the meeting Apologies Confirmation of the minutes of the last AGM held 28/06/2003 Receive and consider the Annual Report Hold elections if necessary and announce Board of Directors for 2004 - 2005 Appoint auditors for 2004 - 2005 Other business 5.5 World Championships For those of you that have raced on Sundays over the past 12 years, you would be familiar with the lovely yacht "Pam". She is an International 5.5 Metre Class yacht; the original keel boat class for the Olympic games. Later they were dropped from the games for the less expensive Soling class. The 5’s (as they’re known) were popular in Australia in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Unfortunately with the cost of transportation, the Australian fleet has dwindled while the European fleets are still doing well. This type of yacht is called a development class. As long as you stay within the guidelines or formula, the designer can explore many facets of construction and design. This results in some honky looking boats that are state of the art, very imaginative and very expensive. Needless to say, the 5’s are a rich man’s class (unless you find one sunk in Sydney harbour, then all you’ll need is a smaller fortune and a very understanding partner). The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is hosting the December/January regatta this summer that consists of the: AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS SCANDINAVIAN GOLD CUP KING KRAAG CUP Culminating with the Word Championships early January 2005. We are expecting boats from all over Europe as well as the Bahamas. This visitor fleet could be as high as 15 or 20 boats. As for the Aussie contingent, we just held a regatta with 10 boats, with another 5 joining our ranks in the next few months. Legends such as Gordon Ingate, Carl Halverson and Frank Tolhurst will be gracing us with their presence. As for "Pam", the last thing we thought when we dragged her off the mud in middle harbour, was the chance to compete in the Worlds. She has done it once before and won back in the 60’s. Now she is a lot older, crankier, a bit out-gunned by the young bucks but we believe a lot wiser and still a pleasure to sail. As with any major event, your boat is never ready so we have been working on the old dinosaur every chance we’ve had. We’ve even purchased a new set of rags. In the long run, it will come down to the nut on the end of the tiller and how good the crew is… as it should be. So if you are out on the harbour around Xmas and you spot a fleet of really pretty yachts, come over and give us ‘oy’. By the way, if you are interested in joining our little fleet our association has some lovely old 5’s for sale and dying to race. CABARITA CUPSaturday 8th May was a fine day for the inaugural Cabarita Cup.

A clear sky and a fair breeze from the SE.

The course instructions had been carefully sealed in plastic containersawaiting the eager competitors. The start line was the stern of "Jabiru" atanchor off reef beach. At each yachts allotted start time, they sailed pastonly to find their race instructions hurled into the sea. A bad "man-overboard"manoeuvre would have cost them a penalty, but the good news is …. Allyachts passed with flying colours.

It was then off down the harbour, looking for those clues to answer the37 questions.

Upon reaching Cabarita Marina (up the Parramatta River for those whocouldn’t attend), each yacht took a berth, then proceeded to "Jabiru" to hand intheir answers and start the pre-dinner drinks. The place-getters were based onthe number of correct answers. They were:

1st Place Granualle 32 correct 5 wrong2nd Place Hap Hazard 31 correct 6 wrong3rd Place Slip Stream 29 correct 8 wrong

We won’t discuss the worst result for the day!

Drinks were then followed by a hearty roast dinner, then more drinks! Thismade the bacon and toast breakfast even more appealing the next morning, before a leisurely sail back to Manly. Slipstream, Granualle and Hap-Hazardmade the most of the inclement weather on the Sunday morning as an excuseto carry on eating and drinking until late in the afternoon. A thoroughlyenjoyable weekend! We look forward to an even bigger fleet participating in next years Cabrita Cup.

Manly JuniorsWinter has seen only a few of our most keen andhardened sailors out enjoying the sunny winter weather onoffer recently. Fiona and Angus C were our most recentsailors out enjoying a relaxed Sunday morning sail.

SailabilityA stocktake of Sailability Lifejackets has revealed that some have gone astray. If you are harbouringan escaped lifejacket, with the words Sailability, or Donated by The Shervington or Parkes Families,

would you please return them? If you leave them on the lid of our Lifejacket Bin, which is at the Sailability end of thestore room, we would all be very grateful.

Last Wednesday, 2.6.04, several of our sailors and volunteers took part in the Multiple Scelerosis Regatta on theharbour, hosted by The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The winning boat was Norske, skippered by the President ofSailability Australia, Bruce Dixon. Runner up was Braveheart, skippered by Bill Meiklejohn. Coming in third was anelderly wooden boat, The Margaret Rintoul, skippered by Bruce Gould. The Margaret Rintoul was built in 1948, wonthe Sydney to Hobart in 1950, and has had 16 Sydney to Hobart races. Our sailors and volunteers were spread overa number of boats, and we all had a fantastic race.

The Presentation Day, programmed for June 19th has been cancelled, owing to unforeseen circumstances. Insteadof this day, we are planning a Training and Orientation Day for August 28th, 2004. This will be the start of our season, and we will be getting to know our volunteers, and getting in some practice in rigging, using the hoist, pontoonprotocols, etc. If you are planning to be a Sailability Volunteer in the coming season, this would be an important andfun function to attend. Please call Eli on 9976.2747, or Evelyn on 9976.2134 for more information .

Presentation NightThis annual event - the equivalent of the Logie Awards for Manly Yacht Club and

eagerly anticipated by everyone - went off with a bang on May 22nd. The evening was asuccessful test for Margaret's new kitchen and fridges, which performed admirably.Despite the fact that some of the prize winners had chosen the French Riviera overManly Cove, the evening was a great success. Bill Gale, a lively speaker with lots toshare, entertained members with some fabulous slides. At 80plus years, Bill has sailedfor over 56 years with Sydney Amateurs on his yacht Ranger. He enthralled audiencewith stories of boating royalty, sail innovations and fashions on the high seas. Bill iscurrently seeking applications for an all female crew.

The evening had its sad note. It was the last presentation night presided over by ourbeloved commodore, Bruce Davis. After 15 years in the role, Bruce has decided on acareer as a TV presenter, imparting his considerable Tax and Computer knowledge to thenation. Keith Woodward, el Presidente Extraordinaire, made a special presentation toBruce to thank him and his Commodorable Pam for their tireless efforts. Another specialaward went to Colin Cameron, Honorary MYC Deckie in honour of his energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the construction of our new wharf. Colin was awarded atrophy made from the old deck's hardwood and polished up by Blue Robinson. Thisyear's Citizenship award went deservedly to Margaret Lucas, in recognition for herorganisational precision and reliability in the MYC Shop. That beer you look forward toafter sailing is all Margaret's doing!

Sailability and the Manly juniors received awards after a successful season and for thefirst time the centreboard division was awarded prizes. Sailability’s prize for Championswent to Elizabeth Atkin & Monique Simpson. Most Improved sailor Stephen Davis.Michael Troy won his first trophy since Little Athletics Under 8, coming third in thecentreboard division, after Jules Lawson 2nd and Blue Robinson, the big One.

There were many winners amongst the senior division. The build up to the Clubchampionship announcement was electric. Michael Troy, our very own media celebritykept the audience on its toes. Fittingly, this years’ Club Championship was won by Bruceand Pam Davis on their new boat Pensive. Second division's equivalent the Flotto Laurowas awarded to Zena. Congratulations to all the winners.

The final prize of the night was the 5 cartons (60 bottles) of Tyrrell's wine and for thesecond time in three years, the winner is (drum roll please) Bill Spence! Your shout Billfor the rest of the year.

Thank you all for coming, see you next year.... ANN WEBBER

PS Enquires about Brian-The-Bar-Man, that suave Sicilian who performed so admirably, can be directed to the club. Get him while he’s still cheap.

Thanks to Ann and John Webber, Brian-The-Bar-Man, the organisers of

Tyrrell’sAfter many years of sustained sponsorship Tyrrell's Wines will

again be approached for the Twilight series sponsorship for thecoming 04/05 series. The association has been enormouslysuccessful with Tyrrell's selling more wine in the last year thanever through their outlet Brookvale Cellars in Mitchell Road,Brookvale.

Nearly 40 yachts competed in the series last season and at thePresentation Night on the 22nd May when the winner wasdrawn from the barrel for the 5 cases of Tyrrell's wines therewere many mutterings around those gathered that really itbelonged to me and me and me.

Dentist and Manly's most eligible bachelor Bill Spence couldn'tbelieve his ears when his name was drawn as the winner. Wordhas it that a huge party is being planned in Seaview Street,Balgowlah [Dr Bill's home] to celebrate!

Thanks Bill, for being a good sport, we'll all be there - and thanksTyrrell's for being a great sponsor. GENE SCOTT

"Stainless R Us" Winter Series - Race 1

It was fun while it lasted. The first raceof the "Stainless R Us" Winter Seriessaw the early starters head off in a lightbreeze which carried them down theharbour and away from the rest of thefleet still drifting on the start line. Thiswasn’t to last, the third leg of the division2 course saw Taken for Granted take 25minutes to get from Manly West to ManlyEast (even for us that was slow). Thedecision to shorten course was madeand as you would predict the wind cameup, if only briefly. First across the line indivision 1 was Cuckoos Nest, First Light, and Cape Fear. In division 2, ChocolateEclare, Blue Rhino, and Yevanna tookout the honors.

This winter we have a centerboard fleetjoining us with 8 starters and 3 finishersBlue Robinson lead across the line,Jules Lawson second, and Michael Troyin the flagship of the Penguin Sail fleet,Kantoffelpuffer third.

Back at the Club toasted sandwicheswere eaten, the beer and wine flowedand prizes were awarded, including themystery finishers prize for a finishingyacht not in the places, and a mysterydraw prize for a crew member. Theseprizes will be given out again next racebut you have to be there to collect them.

Just a reminder to all non finishers that you MUST contact the club on 9977 9494 and report your withdrawalfrom the race! We will see you on June 20th for thenext race. IAN DENNEWALD
