Letter from the Minister, December 2017 Dear Friends,
As I write in November we are all getting ready for Advent – strangely, this is preparing for the preparation. Advent is a
period when we deliberately take time to stop and think about what it means for God to come into our lives through the arrival of Jesus Christ. In church we think about what that
meant 2000 years ago when Jesus was born, what that means now as we know Jesus with us through the work of the Holy Spirit, and what that means for the future, when one day God
will come to complete the kingdom and fulfil all the promises.
For the season of Advent to have its true effect in our hearts and our lives we have to get ready to make space for this
prayer time, and then follow through on it, and keep the discipline! During Advent last year, I was shown a book by a friend which has a poem for each day of Advent accompanied
by a prayerful and scriptural reflection, and then in January I happened to see a copy in a second hand book shop. Now, Advent is approaching, and the preparations having been
made, it’s down to me to make the final step ... and get it off the shelf and actually read it.
What are you doing for Advent – A calendar? A Bible passage? A prayer time? A candle? We are gathering with Churches
Together in Gipton and Oakwood for an evening on Thursday 30 November and three Tuesday lunches to help each other with Advent – perhaps you could join us – see inside for
details.
The most exciting thing is the way that all this thinking about praying and reading the Bible can teach us how the Holy Spirit
is always at work in us preparing the way; just as it was for the birth of Jesus – the Holy Spirit gets everything ready – not just the preparation of Mary and Joseph, but even through the
whole history of God’s people, paving the way for the arrival of God’s Son. In small ways, as we follow Jesus, this happens in our lives too. Over Christmas and New Year, every time you
see someone and bring Christmas greetings about the good
5
news of Jesus, the Spirit has been at work already – in the life of the person you are talking to, helping them be ready to hear
the good news, and in your prayers and your heart making you into the right person at the right time to bring help and hope.
Preparing for the seasons of the church year is about being
open to the Spirit’s work. I pray that this Advent, Christmas and New Year you may realise just what God has been preparing you for, and that you have opportunity to bring good
news to a friend or neighbour.
Yours in Christ, George

2017
I am currently organising the Nativity which is to be
part of the morning service on 17 December.
This year it will be quite a bit different and I need to compile a list of about 24 adults who would play a part
in the Nativity.
We will continue our practices with the children on
Saturday 2 December 14.00 to 16.00 Sunday 3 December (during Junior Church time),
Saturday 9 December 12.00 to 14.00 and
Saturday 16 December 14.00 to 16.00
Adults will be welcome to come to any of these practices to get a feel for what will be involved.
I anticipate that there will only be a need to have one
practice with the adults which we can arrange a convenient date for during early December, before the dress rehearsal with the children on 16 December.
Could you let me know ASAP if you are willing and available to be part of this ambitious venture so that I can complete writing the play?
Many thanks, Anne Kirkland

The venue is set and the time has been arranged for
our housegroup to meet on Wednesday 6 December at 19.45.
If there is enough interest we will also meet on Wednesday 20 December

CHURCH PARADE TOY SERVICE
Sunday 10 December at 10.15
As usual, we will be collecting books and toys, old (in good
condition) and new please. Your gifts will be taken to Lavender Walk, East Leeds Contact Centre where the staff aim to provide a safe and friendly environment for Looked After
Children to see their birth family.
They have two rooms for families to use, both have access to a kitchen and one has access to the garden.
Families are offered the opportunity to do baking and different
art activities. They also have a variety of books, toys and games.
A prayer of thanks
O loving Lord, you give us the gift of joy: we thank you for the joy we receive and the joy we can give to others.
This Advent and Christmas time, may our thankfulness overflow and may these gifts
we offer bring joy to children in need;
and may those who care for them discover deep peace and calm
where there was once fear and apprehension.
This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen

As last year, I’ve organised for us to go and sing carols in Elmwood Nursing Home on Tuesday 12 December at 14:30.
Park Avenue and Sabourn Court Nursing Homes have asked if we could go and sing there too.
Park Avenue is a dementia home so we’d only sing about four carols there and then go onto Sabourn Court which is situated
on the brow of the hill on Oakwood Lane, opposite Springwood Road and whose residents are like those residing at Elmwood.
I have said that I will go and sing in all three places but it would be good if others could join me. I expect we’ll be at
Elmwood until 15.00, then onto Park Avenue, finishing around 15.15 and then onto Sabourn Court. We should be finishing around 16.15.
Everyone appreciated our singing last year as it brings the joy of Christmas into the lives of the residents and staff of the
above residential homes.
Opera North Sing ON
There will be further opportunities throughout 2018 to get involved in a variety of creative arts activities for adults.
Please keep an eye on both the Opera North and our very own Oakwood Church websites for details.

Our December Big Blue Bin donations will go to
(Positive Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers)
based at St Aidan's, Roundhay Road
FOOD APPEAL
PAFRAS is working with refugees and asylum seekers to reduce the effects of destitution and poverty, improve physical health and mental wellbeing, support access to
mainstream services and raise awareness amongst local communities.
Without donations PAFRAS does not have the resources to
meet increasing demand. All donations go to providing services for the vulnerable people they serve, whether that
is in the form of a meal, food parcel or toiletry pack; a small hardship payment or a bus ticket so that they can attend a meeting with their solicitor or submit new evidence in
support of their claim to the Home Office.
PAFRAS particularly needs donations of food and toiletries such as tins of fish, meat, vegetables, beans
and fruit, dry food: sugar, tea, rice, pasta, cereal, coffee. They also need: long-life milk, fruit juices,
biscuits, nuts, dried fruit chocolate bars and chocolate biscuits, toiletries such as shampoo and shower gel, soap, mouthwash, sanitary towels,
toothpaste, tooth brushes, razors, shaving foam/gel, deodorant, toilet rolls.
Thank you.
If you would like to find out more about PAFRAS please visit their website at www.pafras.org.uk

Strong Roots, New Growth
Thanks to everyone who has responded to our stewardship campaign; it’s great to have the return slips coming back.
Please keep them coming, there is no deadline! Members of the Stewardship group are collating all the responses and names will be passed onto the appropriate teams. If you have
made an offer of help that has not been followed up, please speak to one of the stewards, wardens or clergy.
Please pray to for the appointment of the Church Administrator. The interviews will be happening at the beginning of December.
We are fortunate to be in an area where the glories of creation
can easily be seen; from the trees in the church yard to the birds in Roundhay Park. Care for the environment is a part of our discipleship. The Diocese of Leeds has some good
resources for environmental issues and is offering to email regular information to a named person in the congregation. On receiving the information, the person would share it within
the wider congregation as appropriate, perhaps by sending information to The Broadcast or ensuring a poster goes up on the noticeboard at the back of church.
Is there someone who has an interest in environmental affairs,
is computer literate and would be happy to undertake this small role? Please talk to Kathryn or Leanora.

Carol Singing around Oakwood 18.00 - Monday 18 December
Every year we go carol singing around Oakwood on one
evening in the week leading towards Christmas.
This year we will be handing out mince pies to wish everyone a happy Christmas. We have been inspired by this idea at the Methodist circuit’s ‘Share Jesus’ day conference in October - a
small simple way of our church sharing love and blessing with our neighbours.
Please could you help? We need people to ...
1) Buy some packaged mince pies and bring them to church -
either to the Nativity Service on Sunday 17 December, or just before we go out singing. We will need at least 200 mince pies.
2) Meet at church at 18.00 on Monday 18 December. Wrap up in clothing to suit the weather! We walk the streets singing and knocking on doors until about 19.30 and then gather
back at church for soup.
3) Whether you can come or not, please pray for those of us
going singing. This is one of the main points in the year when we intentionally aim to make personal contact with people in our neighbourhood.
Please talk to us if you want to know more.
Thank you! George Bailey and Lynda Pickersgill

Come and Celebrate Christingle with us
on Saturday 24 December at 16.00
It's the glitter and glue season and we will be cleaning
the tables in the hall on Thursday 28 December at 09.30.
It only takes a couple of hours but any amount of time you can offer will be helpful.

Silent Prayer Group
How do you feel about silence? It has been described as “The Gateway to God”. Many of us both seek silence yet are fearful of it. And yet we have a sneaking feeling that the impact of
noise in and on our lives is not good; that somehow we need more silence. Finding the time to be silent can be challenging in itself. A small group of people have committed to praying in
silence with each other regularly. There is a short introduction, a time of silence, time to come out of silence perhaps using music and then refreshments and conversation.
The group is open to any who wish to explore silence.
Mondays - 22 January and 26 February both at 14.00
For further details and venue please contact Kathryn, Mary 0113 2650100 or Astrid 0113 2735865.

Oakwood
Responding to the needs of people with memory loss and
those who care for them is one of the identified priorities of the Church Council. Our January book picks up this theme
exploring two questions “Who am I when I’ve forgotten who I am?” and "What does it mean to love God and be loved by God when I have forgotten who God is?”.
Come along if you’re interested in these questions.
Tuesday 23 January at 19.30 "Dementia: Living in the Memories of God"
by John Swinton, led by Dr Helen Reid.
Tuesday 20 February at 19.30 "Who Chose the Gospels?" Probing the Great Gospel
Conspiracy by Charles E Hill, led by Revd Steve Allen
Copies of both books will be available at the back of
church. Other books that have been discussed are also there for you to borrow.
USED STAMPS RAISE
THOUSANDS!
We have been involved and supported Hearing Dogs for the
Deaf for many years by saving used stamps which help to raise money for their work.
Just cut round stamps (make sure you leave a border), then bring them to Church, put them in the plastic wallet on the charity noticeboard
or the noticeboard in the back porch. I will collect them and then send them to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Every stamp helps and they add up to
so much.
Enjoy recycling your stamps, knowing the impact you are making by helping to train a hearing dog which will change a deaf person’s life.
Thank you - Martin Shipley

The stage is going up in our hall this week, the costumes are being retrieved from the loft and you can hear teachers saying "sit still sheep and stop bothering Angel Gabriel!" Yes, it's that
time of year again and the children are excitedly practising songs and learning lines for our Christmas performances.
Our Foundation Stage children will be telling the Christmas story through well known nursery rhymes; Key Stage 1 is
performing "Jesus' Christmas party" where we hear the story from the innkeeper's point of view and Key Stage 2 pupils are
putting on "Straw and Order" which is set in a courtroom in Bethlehem.
We are also looking forward to our Christmas carol service on the morning of 14 December and to joining the church
congregation for your evening carol service on the same day.
Amongst all the excitement at school we are remembering and celebrating God's gift to the world all those years ago. In Year 5 we have been writing poems entitled "God is ..." and I would
like to share this one with you.
God is my protector to keep me safe. God is my guide to light my way.
God is my anchor to keep me steady. God is my rock to keep me strong. God is my carer to keep me calm.
God is my peace to keep me from destruction. God is my saviour at the end of the day.
Blessings and peace at Christmas from all of us at Roundhay St John's
and wishing you a happy and healthy 2018.

SAVE the DATE!
Saturday 28 April 2018
A day out for the whole church – all ages are welcome.
The day will be planned to include everyone, with
some time to spend altogether, and some time when we can each choose what to do.
Altogether as a large group we will share in worship, eat together, and enjoy an interactive session to
explore our life with God and to learn from each other.
We will have also have a time to choose which will
include activities suitable for different people and to cater for varying things people hope to get from the
day, including:
• Quiet space for prayer and reflection
• Fun and Games • Exploring the local area
A small team is working on identifying the right location and planning the day. Look out for details in
the February Broadcast and across church life
For now, please keep the date free, and sign up as
soon as the arrangements are in place.

A Czech Christmas (2016)
I lived and taught in Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic (they
separated while I was there) for a year, 1992/1993, after the
downfall of Communism.
My father was Czech and I met over 70 members of my huge family
during that year. I have returned many times to visit family and
friends but, until now, I had never been there at Christmas.
I couldn't find anyone to go with me so, in spite of dire predictions
that I wouldn't be able to cope (I have MS) I decided to go alone.
My neighbour took me to the airport and my cousin promised to meet
me at Prague airport. There were two Czech people on the plane
going out who I knew and everything went very smoothly. There
was snow and fog on the motorway to Moravia - about a three-hour
drive, but we arrived safely and, although no more snow fell, the
temperature for the next seven days never got above nought, so that
the snow didn't melt until Boxing Day and we had a white Christmas.
I was staying in a village near the Austrian border, where Christmas
is much more traditional and less commercial than here in England or
in other parts of the Czech Republic. I can honestly say that it was
the most stress-free and spiritual Christmas that I have ever had. I
didn't go in a shop all week and barely spent any money - a good
thing, since after Brexit the exchange rate is much worse for us. I
hardly saw any Christmas cards, the tree was brought in and
decorated on Christmas Eve or the day before and the Renaissance
town of Mikulov looked like a setting for a fairy tale with the floodlit
chateau and beautifully decorated tree in the almost empty square.
I didn't have to cook Christmas dinner for the first time in years. The
traditional Czech meal of fried carp and potato salad was eaten on
Christmas Eve after we had attended a church service at a car home,
where my cousin's partner works (similar to the two care homes I
play for in Leeds).
I met many friends and family, including friends in Brno and two
granddaughters of two cousins, who played clarinet and classical
guitar with great finesse and expression.
Of course, there was much exchanging and opening of presents
and a lot of excited children and homemade wine and slivovic.
The two highlights came at the end of my stay. On Christmas day
evening we went to a concert in the cathedral in Brno, where a folk
mass was sung by the choir I used to sing with, Brno Philharmonic,
together with the cathedral orchestra.
24
The conductor was Petr Kolár, the Cathedral organist who, in 1993
conducted us in Rheims, whilst still a student, after the sudden death
of our chorus master. After the mass had finished we all sang carols
with the orchestra. We had been singing carols everywhere we went,
much to my delight. When I was teaching in Brno, almost no-one
under 40 new any carols. Such church music was banned during the
Communist period. I had found myself teaching Czech carols to
Czech pupils.
The next day I was told there would be a 'Living Bethlehem' outdoors
at Ivan, the village where my father was born. This turned out to be
a play in which some of the villagers took part or sang in a small
choir, with the rest of the villages standing in reverent silence five or
six deep around a small square. After the holy family were settled in
the stable, a procession of villages brought gifts for the Christ child.
These included a doll from children in national dress, honey with the
donors dressed in bee-keeping gear, a mirror for the child to play
with, a (stuffed) bird, potatoes, onions (well I suppose Mary and
Joseph needed to eat), a chef with a 'gateau', a live sheep and goat
and a fish in a bowl. This in fact was also alive, as was proved when
the kids started poking it at the end to find out!
But, then the climax!!! The three kings arrived with two live camels,
one ridden by a king, the other smaller one led by a servant. They
were Bactrian (two humps) and beautifully groomed and not at all
smelly or bad-tempered like the one I rode in Jerusalem. The bigger
camel knelt down for the king to dismount.
And, after it was over, there were free camel rides for the children
and free refreshments for the adults.
Oh - and baby Jesus was live too!

Our January Big Blue Bin donations will go to
in Harehills
The charity particularly needs donations of food such as tins of
meat, tomatoes, beans, sugar, tea, rice, pasta, cereals and coffee, long life milk, fruit juices and biscuits so that they can continue to help to reduce the effects of destitution and
poverty and improve physical health and mental health wellbeing of people living in and around Harehills Lane. Also needed are toilet rolls and kitchen rolls. Please help by
bobbing any of the above items in the bin in January.
Also, the cafe is low on free meal tickets for clients. Could you
sponsor one or more (£4.00 each)? If so, please call in at the Café, contact Deacon Sheila on 0113 3450268 or at
[email protected] for further details.
Many thanks.
HELP - Harehills English Language Project at St Aidan's, Roundhay Road
Harehills English Language Project, a registered charity is a
voluntary organisation whose aims are to teach English to immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees and others for whom English is important in their daily lives. We run classes for
complete beginners and more advanced students (pre-entry and entry levels 1-3).
We need extra volunteer help in fundraising, teaching and admin support. If you are interested please contact Revd Diana Zanker [email protected] for an Information Pack, if
possible by 16 December, so that we can make appointments early in the New Year.
Children are provided for in a creche, certificates are presented each year in July and we also go out on educational and leisure trips where the people who are learning English can practice
their skills and see more of the country.

A team of eight people from Oakwood Church and St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church have come together to tell and act out
Bible stories at Roundhay St John’s primary school. We do this as Churches Together in Gipton and Oakwood using the Lion Storyteller Bible as part of the ‘Open the Book’ initiative.
We had our first visit in October when, with the help of some
impressive props (many made by the team) and children from the school, we had great fun telling and performing the creation story from Genesis ‘In the beginning’.
Our props included representations of the sky, the sea, the
sun, stars and the moon, butterflies, birds, flowers, fish, a monkey and a tortoise!
The school seemed as delighted to have us as we were to be there. A couple of our volunteer storytellers have also had
very positive feedback from children who are neighbours.
We are very much looking forward to our next visit and, in due course, assembling a team to visit Wykebeck School in Gipton.
If you would like to know more or to help in any way please have a word with Revd Sonia Kasibante.

All women in sympathy with our aims are welcome at any MWiB event:
28
• bringing women together to know Christ and to make him
known
• encouraging, equipping and enabling women to serve God in the church, the community and the world
• connecting women in Britain with women worldwide
The keynote speaker and leader for the weekend will be
Rachel Lampard MBE Vice-President of the Methodist Conference 2016–2017
Speaking to the Conference gathered in London, Rachel Lampard said: "We live in a world where we need 'oceans of justice', where in the UK more than 1 in 4 children live in
poverty, and two million people die each year because of a lack of safe water or sanitation.’
Rachel is Team Leader of the Joint Public Issues Team and has worked for the Methodist Church as Secretary for
Parliamentary and Political Affairs since 2000 with responsibility for the Church’s engagement with political issues in a range of areas.
There will also be a variety of workshops; time to make or
renew friendships; time to relax together or find quiet space; time to share in conversation and to visit the Market Place.
If you require a crèche or children’s programme, please contact the registrar by 31 January 2018 so that this can be arranged. Reduced rates are available for children.
There is a variety of single and shared accommodation, all with
en-suite facilities.

House Groups
Early Methodist gatherings were called 'societies'.
John Wesley encouraged different kinds of small group to develop, so that both leaders and members
of the societies could receive support and challenge in their faith.
These groups, called 'classes', met regularly, and the
idea was to be accountable to each other about how each person was living the Christian life. So people had to be very open and willing to be changed by the
experience.
In the twentieth century it became less common for classes to meet in this way but recently many
Methodists have been trying to reclaim the tradition.
The supportive small group has been found to be one of the most powerful ways for people to feel that they belong, and to learn, grow and expand their
opportunities for Christian conversation about the things that matter.
