I editor‘s letter

As you will have spotted, this month‘s cover guests are their majesties, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, who were welcome visitors to the Canary Islands in July.In Tenerife officially to open the Fundación Canaría Cristino de Vera in La Laguna, the King and Queen are also due to join other royals and heads of government at the Observatory in La Palma for the inaugura-tion of the new giant telescope. This is their second visit in just three years, the previous one being in 2006 to launch Santa Cruz’s tram service, and last year the heir to the throne, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, were also in Tenerife for the reopening of the Teatro Leal. Seen very much as part of the new generation of modern royal families in Europe, the Spanish royal family are regular visitors to the islands, for both business and relaxation purposes. The key role played by King Juan Carlos in the reestablishment of democracy in Spain after the death of the dictator Franco in 1975 is a source of great pride to many Spaniards, and while the family do adhere to the numerous norms their status may dictate, they, both the King and Queen as well as their three children, and their families, are seen as very open to change and new ideas. Elsewhere on Tenerife music and the environment hit the headlines, with the Eólica International Renewable Energies festival keeping them recycling and rocking into the wee hours, while Jarabé de Palo, Carlos Baute and Marta Sanchez also entertained thousands of fans in various locations. With August upon us it really is time to wind down. Traditionally the holiday month for Spain, let’s hope that we see a healthy increase in visitors to the Island from the peninsula as well as elsewhere, and the beginning of an upturn in the economy, something we all would welcome.

Mamma Mia! is already a block bu-sting film and the musical, currently touring Spain, is selling out fast.

Based on the magical music of Abba, Mamma Mia! is set in a Greek island paradise and revolves around the fairytale of a family and their friendship

by writer Catherine Johnson. On the eve of her wedding, Donna‘s daughter Sophie attempts to discover the identity of her father. Three men from her mother’s past meet on the island which they all visited 20 years before. The musical will be coming to the Audi-torio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz with at

least ten performances between Decem-ber 28 and January 4. Five trailers will transport the scenery, sound, lighting and other equipment which will be managed by 26 technicians. Even before its premiere, Mamma Mia! beat day to day box office records in Spain, with more than 60,000 tickets being sold in 11 cities within a month. Ticket sales for the Tenerife performances exceeded 1,000 in only one week, em-phasising the continuing popularity of Abba’s music on the island. To see this number one worldwide musical with its sparkling costumes and fabulous songs, book your ticket early. Prices range from 30 to 50 euros and are available from the Auditorium box office, by calling 902 317327, or from www.auditoriodetenerife.com.

The Virgin of La Candelaria is the Patron of the Canary Islands, and at these fiestas held in her honour, thousands of people from all over Tenerife congregate to take part in the religious acts and festivities. Many of them also participate in the traditional pilgrimage, walking from distant parts of the island to reach the town for the romería on 14th August and the fiesta on the 15th. Among the many acts repeated year after year is the reconstruction by local people of the apparition of the statue of the Black Virgin to the Guanches – the ancient aborigine inhabitants of Tenerife.

fiesta de los corazonesTEjina, la laguna, auguST 24

This is one of the most original fiestas in Tenerife, known as Corazones de Tejina (Hearts of Tejina), and is celebrated in honour of San Bartolomé. This curious name comes from the tradition of creating sets of three enormous hearts mounted on beech tree branches which are each 12 metres high and adorned with fruit, flowers and other forms of decoration. In this part of Tenerife, a healthy competitive spirit exists between the inhabitants of various suburbs who vie to create the most beautiful hearts. This fiesta is also famous for its finale, the burning of the mop, which is really a rag doll, signalling the end of the fiesta.

This grease causes the appearance of blackheads, dilated pores and oily skin.Too much secretion also causes a larger hydroly-pidic film and the stratum corneum gets thicker, which slows down the process of natural desca-ling.The collagen content is higher in male skin and it is also denser in the dermis, which means that male skin is thicker and seems to take longer to age.During puberty, men get facial hair and shaving becomes one of the most important parts of male care, affecting the skin and causing irritation, dryness, folliculitis, etc.Mesoestetic men has selected the most effective active principles and the most innovative pharma-ceutical technology to optimise results, thanks to:more effectiveness: with immediate and visible effects thanks to the high concentration of active principlesmore safety: non-irritating ingredients, suitable for all skin types, even very sensitive skinmore comfortable: light and non-greasy texture, giving a fresh sensation and enabling a pleasant and fast application. Feng Shui and the five Qisby roger Keller

To feel comfortable we need balanced sur-roundings. Therefore the essence of Feng Shui is to harmonise the energy around us. But what is energy? Sometimes energy is described as a magical floating thing that can be positive and negative. in reality it is more down to earth and words like Qi, Chi and Prana for example describe natural forms of energy which can be found every-where.

Feng Shui and EnergyIn the western world it is very common to har-monise houses with Feng Shui. But very often the term ’energy‘ is used to sell useless products like spirals, crystals etc. to influence the energy flow in a positive way. If we put all the esoteric explanations aside, we can get to the real meaning of energy or Qi, as the Chinese would call it. There are five forms of Qi, that we use in our daily life: light – light, dark, natural or artificial Fire – warm, coldair – clear, pollutedWater – clean, dirtyand the energy of ourselves – the human energy living in a house.

The five forms of QiIn Chinese tradition we are influenced by the flow of these five Qis. In western countries we call them five elements which is a rather confus-ing translation. For the Chinese everything between heaven and earth is connected to Yin and Yang and the five elements. This energy cycle is in a constant movement. As long as all elements are more or less in harmony, the cycle is

balanced. If one element gets too strong or too weak the whole cycle becomes out of balance, causing chaos. Every element has its own form of energy. Let‘s have a look at the five elements and their energy forms in a house.

The Wood Qi Light is represented by the wood Qi in a house. We like to have a balanced light for our activities. Depending on the use of a room we need more

or less light energy. During the night when we are sleeping, we don‘t need any light. Therefore a bedroom with nice views and direct sunlight is quite useless. It would be much better to use the light Qi in the living room, kitchen and areas with activity. Your working space (writing desk) should have natural light and be close to a window - this is essential for relaxed working. Artificial light will give you a headache after a while and make you nervous.

I lifestyle

The Fire QiWarmth is essential for us. A house with a weak fire energy makes us feel cold. If the fire is too strong it is also uncomfortable. Hence, it is very important where you place the rooms in a house. If the living areas are facing south we will get the warmth (and the light) we need to be more

active. Bedrooms should be facing northern directions, because we sleep better when the temperature is lower.

The Metal QiAir is represented by the metal Qi. A house with-out fresh air gets humid and sticky. Oxygen is the

most important element for our body. With-out fresh air we become tired and we cannot concentrate. The house will attract all kinds of creatures which love a humid environment and mould will be a big problem. Modern houses – especially in northern Europe – are very well sealed to keep the warmth inside. The downside is, that used-up air cannot be replaced as it should be. Long walks during winter time are important to freshen up the metal Qi in our bodies.

The Water QiThis one is very easy to understand. In mod-ern houses we don‘t have to think about our daily water supply any more. Just open a tap, use it and the dirty stuff goes down the drain. In older times it was much more difficult to get water into a house. The waste water had to get out of the house without being seen. Therefore an old Feng Shui rule still tells us to close the toilet seat before flushing. But don‘t worry if you don‘t do it – your money won‘t flush away as some Feng Shui books tell you.

The Earth-QiIt is our duty to keep a house lived in because the inhabitants represent the earth energy of a property. We have to clean it up, paint the walls once in a while and so on. An empty house doesn‘t have any earth Qi and eventu-ally it will rot. We have to be able to walk through a house and put everything in its proper place. An unorganised house has a weak earth Qi and therefore needs more hu-man energy.

Peroni nastro azzurro, the number one italian premium beer company, announced their new creative campaign with a night of pure italian style which took the form of a tribute to the master work of the 60s by Federico Fellini – la Dolce vita.

Introduced by model Martina Klein, numerous members of the Las Palmas cultural, social and business society enjoyed the event which took place at the Gabinete Literario. Martina de-scribed the night as elegant and classy and commented, “Peroni Nastro Azzurro is the Italian style of La Dolce Vita – in a bottle!”Eduardo Martell, who is responsible for the brand in the Canari-es, from Compañía Cervecera de Canarias said that, “... La Dolce Vita by Peroni Nastro Azzurro is a great step forward in people’s perception of makes of beers and the traditional method of marketing this drink. We hope that we can share this new cam-paign with consumers all over the Canaries”.

20 sculptures of orcas which were created on behalf of the loro Parque Foundation are to be exhibited at the Tenerife Espacio de las artes (TEa) in Santa Cruz during September.

Recognised and respected Canarian artists, Ildefonso Aguilar, Elena Lecuona, Anibal del Rosario and Juan Antonio Zárate, with Pepe Dámaso, Carmen Cólogan, Iker Muro, Luis Kerch and Gonzálo González, have created 13 of the 20 sculptures. In this initiative aimed at awareness and protection of whales in general, these artists have guided and spon-sored six social groups from all the Canary Islands who have created seven more giant orca sculptures which will later be exhibited in other locations around the islands. All profits from this colourful project will go towards whale conservation programmes under the Macaronesia Initiative.

The Forgotten Roadby andrea Montgomery

Twisting its way above Tenerife’s east coast is the road that was once the lifeline between north and south. But when the motorway was constructed in the 1970s the route was all but abandoned. We call it The Forgotten road.

This landscape is characterised by deep barrancos (ravines) which split the terrain and historically made travel a time consuming and hazardous af-fair. It wasn’t until the 1930s when the construc-tion of a series of bridges joined together multiple sections of highway, that an effective route from the south of the island to the north opened up. For the first time, the hamlets of the medianías (middle ground dwellers) could enjoy

the benefits of postal and bus services and had a connection to the capital; a lifeline.Today the easily navigable TF28 is an ideal way to get to know Tenerife’s rural roads, snaking its way over those emblematic bridges, empty of traffic and filled with surprises. The route begins above Los Cristianos and takes you high above the coast to the Mirador de Centinela where, from its landscaped terraces in the company of lizards, you can gaze over the volcanic cones, pumice-lined terraces and tourist centres of the south coast. The Forgotten Road traces a timeline from those developments to a different pace and face of Tenerife.Dotted with towns which bustle with activity in the mornings and then doze away the after-

noons, hidden treasures lurk behind facades. San Miguel’s prettiest profile is tucked well away from view while in Granadilla pastel coloured houses lining cobbled streets seem to think they’re on the French Riviera.Beyond the bigger settlements the landscape do-minates; patterned in rows of vines and potatoes and riddled with small natural caves which act as storage rooms for produce. Other road users all but peter out as more bridges are crossed and you arrive at the surreal setting of Arico Nuevo; Tenerife’s secret Portmeirion.

Entirely hidden from view of the road lies a cloistered hamlet of white houses with crooked roofs and faded red Arabic roof tiles. Ornate brass knockers hang on doors that remain closed to deserted alleyways where the only movement comes from the rustle of flamboyant bougain-villea spilling over white walls and the yawning stretch of a cat on a roof. Amidst the uniform glare of white and green the occasional terracot-ta walls of a Casa Rural (rural accommodation) draw the attention like a scream in a library. As the road winds towards Fasnia the abandoned

hamlet of Icor appears on the horizon like a ghost, its 17th century houses constructed from local stone so that their walls blend with the surroundings to the point of obscurity. The odyssey of tunnels and bridges turns to Tolkienesque peaks skirting the Güímar Valley as you approach its enigmatic pyramids and town. At the stylish little harbour of El Puertito, the prospect of a refreshing swim and some tasty sardines awaits you at the end of your journey along the iconic Forgotten Road.Glimpses into The Forgotten Road; one of a series of road trips in Real Tenerife Island Drives, by Jack and Andrea Montgomery.

nestled in the charming hills above los Silos in Tierra del Trigo is a wonderful rural hotel, Finca la hacienda.

It’s a beautifully restored old farmhouse and no expense was spared in the lovingly detailed renovation and conversion of the century old buildings, with heart-stopping views up the mountains and across the sea, into nine separate apartments from one to three bedrooms.Fruit trees droop over ancient walls, old fodder troughs become seats, wheels metamorphosise

into chair backs and two exquisitely kept old threshing floors are destined as dance floors for in-house parties. It’s the ideal place for a rela-xing break and is already very much in demand for family and business celebrations.Choose to cook for yourself in the well equipped kitchen in your apartment, eat at the hotel’s restaurant, book the huge hotel barbecue for an outdoor feast or choose one of the hamlet’s two extraordinarily cheap restaurants, both within easy walking distance.

La Romántica

la romántica has been one of the top choices for diners in Callao Salvaje for many years now, and continues to attract a clientele that is both residential and visitor based.

The restaurant offers an extensive menu, Me-diterranean in tone, but with definite Northern European touches, catering for the British, Ger-man, French, Danish and Scandinavian customers who are frequent visitors. With the kitchen open from early afternoon (to midnight), many local residents choose La Romántica as their prefer-red lunchtime or mid afternoon location, with

an ample terrace in the shade and an excellent selection of smaller dishes to choose from, not to mention ice-cold beer on tap, served in iced glasses, or a chilled white wine to sip through a lazy lunch.Open since 1997, the restaurant prides itself on its attention to service and detail, and since José Antonio took over last year, that commitment has been maintained, and with René in the kitchen and Ivan on the floor, your every gourmet wish can be met. Attention to detail is high, the wai-ters are ever present but discreet, between them they can take you through the menu in Spanish, English, French, German, Swedish and Danish, and are delighted to welcome families (high chairs available) as well as parties with special needs. The restaurant is large enough to cater for romantic dinners for two as well as celebrations of most kinds!Recent changes in the kitchen personnel have seen some new dishes introduced, with standard favourites remaining, and of course the flam-béed crêpes, prepared in front of your eyes, are still very much on the menu. Meat dishes are superbly prepared with a range of home made sauces – the lamb chops are highly recommended (mint sauce always to hand), and fresh fish is also generally on offer, though can also be ordered a day in advance.

There are many tempting meat, poultry, fish and seafood dishes and three pasta dishes to choose from, all served with fresh vegetables. Amongst the items on the menu are various dishes ‘La Romántica’ which all differ slightly from the standard version. Ask your wai-ter to tell you about them – for example Hake La Romántica is served with a bearnaise sauce and topped with caviar. La Romántica also stock an excellent selection of wines, and the waiters are more than happy to suggest a particular tipple for your chosen meal. Desserts are particularly worthy of note here, with presentation a priority, whatever your age, so its always worth leaving a little bit of room for a ‘postre’. Why don’t you build your own house in Tenerife?by John bokobsa, soviten gestion s.l.

In general when we speak about buying a house we are thinking of purchasing a completed pro-perty. Thoughts or dreams of building your own house seem to be a little scary. Why?I can give you some answers. The first one is the problem of purchasing in a country that is not your own, with the consequent language dif-ferences. The second refers to trust, and the ty-pical question, “How can I build a house without knowing anyone on this island, and how can I be sure, even if I find the right person, that I will end up with the house that I am dreaming of?” It is true that it’s easier to buy a completed house, to pay for it and to spend your holidays there. But it is also true that you can save a lot of money by building your own house. Those

who decide to build their own home save around 33 per cent and most importantly, they get the house of their dreams. Let me give you some advice and some ideas to help you to make your dreams come true.First of all let me give you examples of the different options that you have right now on the island. If we take two projects in Golf Costa Adeje, the first one is a good quality new three bedroom, two bathroom, semi-detached house

The projects at Golf Costa Adeje have wonderful views over the golf

course to the sea

Page 41: The Magazine 43

the magazine 41

(150 square metres) with private pool and sea views on a 450 square metre plot, priced at 950,000 euros. The second project is a plot of 2,500 square metres on which you could build a house of 328 square metres with sea view and priced at 600,000 euros. The next step is to build your dream house, which will cost you a maxi-mum of 400,000 euros. Now you are going to tell me that it will cost you more to build your own house than to purchase the completed one! But let’s compare the two finished properties. The first one cost you 950,000 euros, for a house

of 150 square metres on a plot of 450 square metres. The future value of this house will increase by five to ten per cent. The second one cost you 1,000.000 euros but for that you have a plot of more than 2,000 square metres and a house more than double the size of the first one. In terms of the future value of this house, this is where we will find the difference, because once this house is finished the value will increase by 50 per cent or more.So after this explanation we all agree that to build your own house is a very attractive idea, but we are still afraid of the potential problems

that may arise if we decide to realise our dream. But try not to be negative, if you speak to estate agents who have been established on the island for a long time, they will know all the reputable architects and builders that you will need to build your house and they will supervise the work for you, leaving you with the minimum of stress. The most important thing is to start your project well, with very clear ideas about what you want. For that, if you follow my advice, you need to spend some time with the architect, and ask him to draw up plans for the house and change them again and again until you arrive at what you

really want. After that the architect will make sure that the builder finishes the house to your requirements. You will have to pay the architect to supervise the construction, and you will have to pay the builder month by month for the work that he has done. If you pay monthly, you will never have the problem of paying for something that you don’t have or which isn’t done. You need to know also that there are many dif-ferent, and smaller, plots available on the island which will be far less expensive. So have your dreams, make them come true, and good luck!!!

open Wide!

With a folding sliding doorWhy block half of your available opening? Why not take full advantage of the space you have?Open your horizons and bring the outside in. imagine having all your friends at your home for that barbecue party on a summer’s evening. Everyone is squeezing in and out of that sliding door you have. how many of them, after a few drinks, are going to walk straight into the glass? Ouch!! how many will trip up over the threshold with a glass of red wine in hand?

Don’t be shut in! Don’t be closed off!Allow the traffic to flow and keep the party flowing problem free. Give yourself that extra space that you need with a folding sliding door. Don’t separate your inside from the outside. A folding sliding door can accommodate all tastes, applications and building requirements. There are hundreds of colours to choose from, whether your choice is timber, aluminium, or aluminium and timber clad. There are over 100 opening styles, including inward opening, outward opening, folding to the left, folding to the right, and even folding both ways.

There are threshold details to suit all applications. Some people prefer a step on the inside and out-side, some prefer a step on the outside only. But many prefer a flush threshold that blends the inside floor with the outside floor, especially those with children, elderly or someone in a wheelchair.Folding sliding doors have been added to build-ings for approximately 30 years now. Many people see them as big, clumsy, heavy doors which fall off their hinges, leak water and wind, are easy to break into and are mainly used as room dividers.

A folding sliding door can complement any

building

Gone are the days of French doors with a glass panel on either side. Gone are the days of the sliding door, which, when you think about it, is just a door with a large window at the side.In recent years, technology has changed within the folding sliding door industry. Now they have security tested locking, high resistance to water penetration and air infiltration. The hinges and rollers have sealed bearing movement to allow even the heaviest of doors to be operated eas-ily and effortlessly. A folding sliding door can now complement any building and can be used for endless applications. A folding sliding door

can be a solution to many situations without removing or destroying the look or the character of the building. A folding sliding door now has the ability to blend into the natural environment around it.There are so many situations in which a folding sliding door can be a solution to improving your living space and the environment around you.For instance, if you live in an apartment with a balcony, by incorporating a folding sliding door between you and the balcony you can create a feeling of more space. Or by installing a folding sliding door to the top of the balcony rail, you

can create more living space during the winter months. How about using a folding sliding door as a window to generate a more open feeling in any room in your home?Folding sliding doors can increase the valued time that you have with your family, even when they are in the garden and you are in the home. Break down those barriers by creating a wider opening with a folding sliding door and bring the outside, inside. Create wider openings with folding sliding doors.

the expert‘s lesson

Golf Pro Tip of the Monthhow to hole more putts from inside ten feet

Every golfer fears the so-called yips. This is when an uncontrolled twitchy putting stroke makes the golfer miss putts from a very short range. So why is nobody yipping from 20 feet? The answer is that there is no interfer-ence from the brain because the player is in the ‘playing mode’ and is not thinking about the technical aspects of the putting

stroke which happens when the brain is in the ‘learning mode’. When we practice on the putting green, it is fine to switch into ‘learning mode’ as we are working on our stroke, but when we go out there to play we should switch into ‘playing mode’. This may sound difficult, but we do it every time we have a good day on the green.Having a good pre-putting routine will put the player in the right emotional state of mind, or in other words, into ‘playing mode’.

golf IThe main object is to clear our brains of any ‘rub-bish’ which could affect our chances of making a silky putting stroke. This is only possible if we stay in the present while making the putting stroke. How do we do this? Try this method:When you have already assessed any possible brak-ing influences on the line-up of your putt, address the ball as you normally would and take your aim.

Look at the front of the ball, this is the side of the ball closest to the hole, as most of the better play-ers on tour always do. This enhances the action of putting with progressive acceleration which is the key to a good stroke and hitting at the right speed.

As you start your backswing, listen to yourself saying the word, “rock” (the term for the shoulders taking the putter head back).

As you are about to hit the ball with your down-swing, say to yourself, “n roll”. It works! The idea is to avoid any interference from your brain as you make the stroke. We are emptying the brain of any rubbish which might affect your stroke with fatal consequences. This is how to stay in the present while putting and avoid thinking of the outcome because that is what will bring the yips into the game. Remember, on the greens, “Rock ‘n Roll”.

Swing into the future with TaylorMadeTaylorMade r9 DriverTaylorMade has announced the launch of its revolutionary new driver, the TaylorMade R9. By giving players the ability to manually change the face angle as well as the cen-tre of gravity, the TaylorMade R9 represents a new dawn in golf club adjustability.A specially engineered wrench allows players to change the face angle, lie and loft into one of eight different positions. Importantly when the face angle closes the loft incre-ases to ensure optimum carry. As the face angle opens, the loft decreases to deliver a controlled, penetrating ball flight. There are also three weight ports in the head (positioned in the heel, centre and toe) and it comes with one 16-gramme and two one-gramme weights. Players can use the same wrench to change the position of the weights promoting different flight shapes.By combining the adjustability of the face with movable weight technology, the Taylor-Made R9 has 24 different options so that every player should find a set-up that feels comfortable at address and delivers a consistent shape and trajectory.

TaylorMade r9 Fairway and rescueThe TaylorMade R9 fairway wood can be adjusted to eight different clubhead positions – but be aware that if you change the face angle to a more closed position, then the loft will decrease and vice versa. But by adjusting the club to your specific require-ments, you will be better equipped to produce straight, high-flying shots with your armoury of fairways. As for the TaylorMade Rescue TP Hybrids, TaylorMade have long been producing some quality products in this category and the latest Rescue, which also comes in a TP version, is more compact than some of the other models available. The decrease in size means there is a smaller percentage of the sole area which comes into contact with the turf, and this helps the club to glide through the rough more easily.
