The Ini/a/ve The goal of LCI is to provide a theme and focus to extend the highly successful CubeSat model and past Lunar missions into and beyond cislunar space, crea;ng opportuni;es to develop open source standards and broad based training that will transform CubeSats and the cislunar environment from novel curiosi;es to trusted standards and an infrastructure base for mission development for explora;on throughout the solar system.

The LunarCubes Ini/a/ve (LCI)
Three Technical Focus Areas : Standards and Guidelines Open Source Hardware
Promote guidelines and the eventual crea;on of open standards for larger form factors, interoperability, and interconnec;vity.
Open Source SoUware
Promote guidelines and the eventual crea;on of open standards for both design and flight soTware systems.
Collabora/ve Mission Development and Management
Promote guidelines and open standards to facilitate interoperability and resource sharing, on the Earth and in space, for LunarCube colonies and swarms.

Three Lunar Workshops The goal of The Lunar Workshops is to create collabora;ve, interac;ve venues, online and off, for the explora;on of the substan;al opportuni;es in cislunar space unfolding in the coming years and decades. The events will cover topics as divers and important as space commercializa;on, to novel quantum mechanical processes that my exist in the lunar polar terrains, to the technologies that may allow us to discover life throughout the solar system and the universe.
The Lunar Workshops
Three Lunar Workshops 1. Interna/onal Workshop on LunarCubes ( LCW ) 2. Interna/onal Workshop on Lunar Superconductor Applica/ons ( LSA ) 3. Scien/fic Opportuni/es in Cislunar Space ( SOCS )

The Lunar Workshops Three Lunar Workshops Interna/onal Workshop on LunarCubes ( LCW )
LCW 1 & 2 will be held in Palo Alto CA, Nov 13 – 15, 2013 and Oct 9 – 11, 2014. These workshops will provide an interac;ve environment to explore the business, science and technology of LunarCubes.
Interna/onal Workshop on Lunar Superconductor Applica/ons ( LSA )
LSA 4 will be April 10 – 12, 2014 Cocoa Beach, FL. LSA explores Lunar science and technology below 100 Kelvin.
Scien/fic Opportuni/es in Cislunar Space ( SOCS )
These one day updates will promote awareness and interest in the planetary science community about using cislunar space to test theories and develop hardware for planetary missions in deep space.

Three Development Areas : Architecture, LunarCubes and Excitement 1. Explora/on Architecture : Orbital, Surface, Roving 2. 3 Groups of 3 LunarCubes : Engineering, Historical, Data 3. Compe//ons and Kickstarters
Flexure Engineering – Russell Cox-‐ iCubesat II -‐ 5/28/2013
The LunarCubes 1.0 Project Flexure Engineering will endeavor to have 9 rapid prototype LunarCubes built and flown on one or more of the first Google X Prize flights in 2015. We call this a barn raising because even though we will do much of the organizing and some of the technical work, these first LunarCubes will be build by a community of paid and unpaid volunteers who wish to be a part of history and see that the renaissance of space explora;on begins now.

The LunarCubes 1.0 : 9 Cubes to the Moon Three Development Areas : Architecture, LunarCubes and Excitement Explora/on Architecture : Orbital, Surface, Roving
If successful, LunarCubes 1.0 will demonstrate a complete Lunar Explora;on Architecture u;lizing a commercial lander and rover to release LunarCubes in orbit, on the surface and with the rover.
3 Goups of 3 LunarCubes : Engineering, Historical, Data
Three Engineering Cubes : orbital, surface, rover. Three History Cubes : Apollo\Soyuz, Space Heroes ( Real & Imagined ), Future History. Three Data Cubes : two exis;ng Cubes and a Human Explora;on (HED) Cube.
Compe//ons and Kickstarters
We will use games, compe;;ons, and Kickstarters to raise awareness and funds for the LCI and some of the LunarCubes development costs.

The Interna/onal Geophysical Year 2017 -‐ 2018 From July 1957 to December 1958 : in order to beier understand the Earth’s environment from the surface to deep space, The Interna;onal Geophysical Year (IGY) was carried out by the Interna;onal Council of Scien;fic Unions. This event saw the discovery of the Van Allen Belts and the launch of Sputnik 1. To honor the 60th anniversary and to promote excitement in and understanding of space research we are proposing an Interna;onal Lunar Geophysical Year from July 2017 to December 2018.

Three Focus Areas : Missions, Science and Communi;es Cislunar Missions ( in Space 2017 – 2018 )
Promote awareness in and u;liza;on of the many lunar missions that are planned to be opera;ng during this ;me frame.
Cislunar Science ( Lunar, Terrestrial and Planetary Analogs )
Promote a holis;c understanding of the Earth’s geosphere out to cislunar space and to promote and develop cislunar space and a scien;fic model and technology test bed for planetary explora;on.
Global Communi/es : Science, Poli;cal, and Public
Promote a vibrant global community dedicated to the study and explora;on of the solar system for the benefit of all mankind.
