Kids and clubs continue to Get in the Game in 2014More Queensland children and their families will be able to get active this year as

round three of the Queensland Government’s flagship Get in the Game initiative opens next month with $21 million in funding from this year’s budget.

The next rounds of funding begin this month, with Get Going and Get Playing opening on 1 July and Get Started on 15 July.

So far almost 54,000 Get Started vouchers of up to $150 have been issued state-wide to help children with club registrations and 26 per cent of the vouchers were issued to children who had not played club sport before. Additionally, almost $7 million has been distributed to clubs for equipment and training under the Get Going program and more than $14 million paid for infrastructure projects under the Get Playing program.

I’ve been thinking recently about prejudice and how it happens. You see, there is just blatant racism or prejudice for no sane reason whatsoever, and then there are prejudices that are based on a past experience that was negative.

Tattoos used to be, and I say ‘used to be’ because it seems every man and his dog has a tattoo these days, the mark of people typically thought of as ‘dangerous’ or ‘tough’. If you’ve had a nasty encounter with someone who is covered in tattoos, chances are you’ll be wary of all people who are heavily tattooed and give them a wide berth. We are incredibly good at ‘tarring all feathers with the same brush’.

What I’m trying to say is that sometimes, our prejudices can seem reasonable and in fact, are often understandable. But does that make them right?

Here’s an example. Recently I spoke at a local club (you know who you are!) about the work of Destiny Rescue. One of the products for sale to help Destiny Rescue fund the work they do, is coffee beans. Many of the clubs and groups I speak to have members at the ‘wise’ end of life, and I have found that most people in this bracket don’t have coffee machines. So even though I have coffee listed as a product on my powerpoint presentation, I don’t usually mention it.

Well, at this particular club I was asked about it and my response (unfortunately!) was that I didn’t talk about it because not many people in ‘this age group’ have at-home coffee machines.

Oops! Seems that about a third of the group I was speaking to, do in fact have coffee machines at home!

Didn’t I feel embarrassed. I had made an assumption - you might even say I was prejudiced! - based on my past experience, that was incorrect.

So if we take that example and apply it to the rest of life, we can perhaps see where some of it is coming from. If a child is bitten by a dog, usually there will be some sort of fear and trepidation around dogs when the child is an adult. And it’s right and wrong at the same time. Yes, dogs can bite, as the child experienced, but it doesn’t mean that all dogs will bite.

And it’s the same with people. Some people are mean, angry and aggressive - and sometimes those people have a different skin colour to us, have tattoos and shaved heads, might not be well educated, or dress well - but that doesn’t mean that all people who have different skin colour, tattoos, shaved heads, minimal education or less money to spend on clothes will be mean, angry and aggressive.

So regardless of our prejudices, we may be able to see the reason behind it, but it’s never okay to stay that way.

Each individual is just that - an individual. Shouldn’t we start treating them individually?

As veterinarians, one of the more difficult tasks we have to perform is euthanasia for a terminally ill, or severely injured pet. This is a very difficult decision for pet owners and always needs to be considered on animal welfare grounds ie what is best for my pet to relieve their pain and suffering?

The issue of grief is interesting. We tend not to handle it well in our society and the Australian culture, and sometimes owners feel silly or dismissive about the grief they feel for their pets passing. However, when we bond with a dog or cat, they become part of the family and we need to understand that there is a grief process to go through before we can move on.

Some of the stages of grief include: shock; anger; guilt; denial; depression; acceptance/replacement.

The stages can take different times for different people. If the death or decision is sudden, then it can take time for the event to register. The anger you or the family feel is normal and needs to be acknowledged and it is important not to react or be defensive.

The “if only” feeling of being responsible for your pets death is common and is also very difficult to come to terms with.

The denial phase can be because you just do not want to believe it has happened and sometimes bargaining is used to cope.

Our pets fill our lives with unconditional love and their loss can create a hole where the light and joy of living can be hard to find but there are a few things you can do to lift the depressive feelings.

You can create a little memorial for your pet, perhaps where you kept the food and bowls and by adding toys there and a little note recording important dates and some pictures can help the grieving process.

Today, there are cremation services that can return the ashes of your loved pet which gives substance to the memory.

Then we move on to acceptance and you can look back on all the wonderful memories you have shared with your pet and then replacement is a option. Often well meaning friends may push you into this phase but you have to be ready and the timing is important.

Remember our pet’s life span is much shorter than ours. Large breeds can live for 10 years or less, and smaller breeds have a life expectancy of 15 years on average.

The grief suffered through the loss of a pet is the same as for any close companion so give yourself time to work through it.

Sometimes a decision about euthanasia is due to trauma or an accident or life threatening illness that needs a lot of specialised and expensive veterinary care.

It is always an option to consider pet insurance and there are pet insurance companies that you can look at to see if insuring your pet is an option for you and your family. Different companies have different levels of insurance against accidents, illness and trauma. It may just give you peace of mind.

Peaks to Points Festival celebrates our environment

Oxley Creek Common at Rocklea will be transformed into the site of a major environmental extravaganza on Saturday 19 July, with the official launch of the 2014 Peaks to Points Festival, which runs until 3 August.

T h e Pe a k s t o Po i n t s Fe s t i v a l involves more than 25 environment and community groups on Brisbane’s south side running 40 environmentally themed events over two weeks. The Festival program includes bush walks, community open days, photography workshops, bus tours, poetry in the park, tree planting events and history walks.

A highlight on the program is the family day on Sunday 20 July, a day-long celebration of all things environmental, with free entry and a host of activities

Squat, children’s games, boating on Oxley Creek, orienteering around the Common, a Family Bike Swap (buy, sell or donate your bike), hands-on environmental workshops, trackless train rides, guided bike rides to Pelican Lagoon (BYO bike), information displays and a range of food and drinks.

The day will run from 10am to 4pm at Oxley Creek Common, Sherwood Road, Rocklea. Entry and activities are free.

The Peaks to Points Festival is supported by the Brisbane City Council, the City of Ipswich, Redland City Council, Logan City Council, bmag, 612 ABC Local Radio, Healthy Waterways, Queensland Urban Utilites and Brisbane Market Place.

Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre provides a range of services and programs aimed at increasing connections, capacity and resilience which in turn builds community.

One of these programs, Emergency Relief, aims to assist people going through difficult times by accessing non-perishable food, vouchers and some assistance with bills. Due to an increase in demand since July last year, 335 people have received assistance.

To manage this increase, the centre has been looking for ways to build-up the food supplies which are currently supplemented by Government funding and generous donations from the local Uniting Church, Anglican Church and Brumby’s Hot Bread Kitchen which continues to donate bread on a weekly basis.

The Centre needs community support and donations from local residents. A donation box has been placed inside the front of Sherwood Woolworths store, making it easy to purchase one or two extra items to place in the box when doing your weekly grocery shop.

This initiative is a collaborative partnership between the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre and Sherwood Woolworths. Thanks also go to the members of Oxley Men’s Shed who donated materials and built the box.

The centre’s emergency relief geographical catchment is: Chelmer, Corinda, Darra, Graceville, Jamboree Heights, Jindalee, Middle Park, Mt Ommaney, Oxley, Riverhills, Rocklea, Seventeen Miles Rocks, Sherwood, Sinnamon Park, Sumner, Tennyson and Westlake.

Community partnership assists locals

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship.

At our last meeting, our speaker was Howard Briggs who gave us an insight into the current controversies involving the agricultural and the mining industries versus the public interest in Queensland.

This month Mariko Post, the visitor services officer at the UQ Art Museum will tell us about the current exhibition: “Remembering Brian and Marjorie Johnstone’s Galleries”. This will appeal greatly to our audience as will the opportunity to then visit the exhibition.

In June, many of us enjoyed a BBQ Breakfast at Oxley Creek Common to commemorate Queensland Day. It was a pleasant function with nice company, good food and perfect morning weather. The half dozen intrepid souls who did the walk to the Secret Forest before the breakfast arrived back flushed by the exercise and feeling virtuous for having been earlier risers than the rest of the members.

We are all looking forward to a guided walk in the City Botanic Gardens in July followed by lunch at a nearby café with much convivial conversation.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. Graceville Community Garden Update by John Fitz-Walter

A group of scouts from the Sherwood Scouts Group, under the careful guidance of their scout leaders, recently attended the Graceville Community Garden. Their gardening activity was part of their community participation award. Damp newspapers were laid over weeds and grass and then covered with a thick layer of chip mulch; the layers of damp newspaper hindering the further regrowth of the weeds and grass.

Thank you to these many helpers, we hope that the morning tea provided afterwards was able to rejuvenate you after this hard work.

The Graceville Newsagency provided newspapers and we thank them for this valuable gardening resource. A big thank you also goes to the Fundies Wholefood Market in Corinda for their weekly supply of organic green waste. This vegetable matter goes to feed our compost worms to make them grow into superworms! That way they can do the hard work of creating rich fertile castings for use around the gardens. We also congratulate Fundies for celebrating their first year of trading in Corinda and for their community involvement.

Graceville Community Garden members each year ‘step out’ into new surrounds and this year they are venturing to Mt Tamborine where they will visit the local community gardens and then listen to a talk by Bev Buckley at her farm. Bev is the author of the book ‘Transition Farms’.

Don’t forget the PEAKS TO POINTS FESTIVAL, Sunday 20 July at the Oxley Creek Common, located near Oxley Creek off Sherwood Road. Amongst the many activities at this festival, the Graceville Community Garden will have a stall. Please mark off this day and be part of this fun and informative event.

The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Look for the ‘Community Garden’ sign on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue to assist with directions. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome.

Hello ReadersSport plays such an important role in encouraging students to develop healthy lifestyles through involvement in individual and team sports. From Prep to Year Three students St John’s students undertake a perceptual motor program prior to commencing the formal sporting program in Year Four. Our core physical education program from Year Four to Year 12 provides opportunities for students to acquire important physical and team skills so necessary beyond school.

Participation in school sporting teams and individual pursuits builds self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and both team and leadership skills. When combined with the physical fitness derived from regular exercise these positive benefits can lead to strong academic achievement. Sport plays a vital role in the development of confident young leaders for the future.

St John’s Anglican College is a member of The Associated Schools (TAS) and Junior TAS inter-school sporting competitions, giving students the opportunity to compete in a variety of team sports in Saturday fixtures. Swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals encourage healthy inter-school competition, team work and good sportsmanship among like-minded schools.

The senior campus facilities include a new fully equipped gymnasium, multi-purpose courts and a double oval, and the adjacent swimming and fitness center is used for a variety of activities. The lake is nearby and is used for kayaking and other water activities.

The St John’s community would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Hannah Joye (2013 St John’s Old Collegian) on her selection for the Commonwealth Games, Track and Field Team. Hannah is one of only three Australian high jumpers selected to compete in the Games in Glasgow in July. She has been a strong participant in the St John’s Anglican College sporting program throughout her schooling, always with a positive attitude and an encouraging word for her peers. She has inspired many students to pursue track and field sports through her outstanding high jump ability and her capacity for diligent training and physical fitness.

In her TAS Competition Sports and as a State and National level representative level, Hannah showed dedication and tenacity. As a St John’s graduate she is a delightful young person who is well equipped to be a leader in her field and to capably represent her country in

the international sporting arena.

There has been plenty of work at the shed this month as we were fortunate enough to receive a load of sleepers for our shed activities. These were presented to the shed by MLA Tarnya Smith.

The sleepers have been used to make garden edges, flooring and as the base for our sound proof fence. This fence is being installed to meet with our building code requirements and will be completed in the very near future.

Our monthly trip this month was to the RAAF museum at Amberley and was rated a great success by all those who attended. It was then followed by lunch held at the Walloon Saloon.

On Tuesday 22 July at 10.00am, our community garden will be officially opened. This event will be held in conjunction with the “peaks to point” week celebrations.

The shed numbers are steadily increasing with participants coming from all areas of the community. All males are welcome with the shed being open for working activities every Monday and Thursday and Tuesday being kept as our social and guest speaker day. If you are doing nothing on these days and want to meet and socialise then come along to California Road, Oxley at 9.00am and you will certainly be given a warm welcome.

World Environment Day provided the perfect opportunity for Brigidine College Indooroopilly to action its strong, complementary principles of “Strength and Gentleness”.

Brigidine College Principal, Mr Cahill turned over the reins to Kat Kerr who was the winner of the ‘Principal for a Day’ draw. Kat, like the other ‘potential pupil Principals’ was assisting Mr Cahill to raise funds for the homeless of Brisbane through the St Vincent de Paul CEO Sleepout on 19 June.

“I believe the CEO Sleepout is a really worthy cause,” Kat said. “At Brigidine, it’s part of our 85 year long tradition to be involved in activities which focus on the most vulnerable in our community. I wanted to support Mr Cahill and selfishly, it gave me a chance to be College Principal!”

Kat joined the Brigidine College Leadership Team meeting and offered suggestions regarding the College’s new Facebook page, as well as advice on development plans for the Library, Staff Room and the new ‘green space.’ The highlight of Kat’s day was getting to launch the College’s World Environment Day.

“I am a big supporter of environmental issues. It is our planet and we need to look after it,” Kat told the Brigidine community. “This College event reminds us that we all have a part to play – no matter who we are.”

Brigidine Environment Day was a wonderful community event where students and staff developed interactive and engaging stalls to address key environmental issues including sustainable fashion items, ecotourism, wearable art and eco-spirituality projects.

“Brigidine College has a long tradition of being involved in social justice,” Mr Cahill said. “We celebrate our 85th anniversary this year. Raising awareness about important issues and taking practical steps to alleviate the plight of the most vulnerable will continue to be a core Brigidine value.”

Sherwood Probus is celebrating 14 years of friendship with a birthday lunch in mid July, catered by the chef at Magpies AFL Club which is our regular meeting venue. A tasty two course meal is planned. We do not usually have a speaker at this annual lunch but a member’s adventurous daughter, who has restored a classic sailing yacht and runs tours down the Antarctic Peninsular, is keen to show us some wonderful photos of the wildlife there.

Some members and friends will be attending the 50’s and Over Seminar which is being hosted by Centenary Crime Prevention Unit and Councillor Milton Dick in mid July. This is an initiative of the Qld Police Service in response to surveyed needs within the community. Some of the topics to be covered in the seminar are: personal and home security; fraud; emergency preparedness and information on securing personal affairs. It is an all day event with morning tea and lunch provided.

In late June, the dinner group enjoyed a night at a local restaurant. Much conviviality and laughter ensured a great time with friends. The lunch group still meets at a local golf club for their lunches on the second Wednesday of the month.

The theatre group is looking forward to “Wicked” which returns to Brisbane early next year.Late July the Probus Association of Queensland is hosting a Fellowship Day at Samford Showgrounds. This is a golden opportunity for our members to enjoy mixing with members from other clubs. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Country’.

This friendly caring club continues to attract new members, some of whom have nominated for the committee this year.

Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. The chance purchase in London of a water colour painting has helped ‘wind back the clock’ on the history of one of Brisbane’s favourite parklands.

The painting, estimated to be about 145 years old, provides a panoramic view of the riverside farmland, opposite Fig Tree Pocket, overlooking the future site of Sherwood Arboretum, established in 1925.

The painting was sent home by a local farm-hand to his mother in far away Britain with a letter explaining the pioneering Francis sugar cane farm of 1869 where he worked.

The unknown farm-hand described the sugarcane, lucerne and banana crops and the mountain backdrop of One Tree Hill (Mount Coot-tha) shown in the landscape painting to his mother.

A life-long interest in art led local resident Chris Rushworth (pictured) to the on-line discovery of the painting last year at a South London auction house.

“It’s a lucky find because the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) is also searching for historic material for a website later this year on the 89-year-old Arboretum,” Chris said.

Further on-line research by Chris revealed that the river boat, shown in the painting, was most likely the paddle steamer SS Kate, which made a Sunday-school excursion to the Francis farm in November 1869.

Angela Francis, the wife of pioneering settler, Arthur Morley Francis, is believed to be the painter.The sugarcane enterprise didn’t create many other happy memories for the Francis family, which was forced into

insolvency by crop failures in 1870. You may not have an historic painting at home to match the surprising find of Chris, however, FOSA would definitely

Friends of Sherwood arboretum- Brisbane’s living treasure -

The St John’s Oxley Community Men’s Shed members are from all walks of life and ages who in their retirement seek the fellowship of men of like mind in a relaxed atmosphere where they can share their comradeship and life stories.

Many who have health problems are not there for work activity but simply to live out their lives sharing quality time with others. Some are refugees or disabled and the shed offers them a chance to have a sense of purpose in their lives and to settle into a new way of life. A number of widowers living alone enjoy the social interaction and this plays an important role in their wellbeing. There are at least four Vietnam veterans in the group who engage with other members.

The effort of members has made the shed a place with a real purpose in the life of the community. Members have built, furnished and equipped the shed and set up a community garden and in doing so it has given them a sense of ownership.

To convey thanks for the sponsorship, interest and public expressions of support, shed members invite residents to the opening of the Community Garden at a morning tea and BBQ at the shed 18 California Road, Oxley on Tuesday 22 July, 10am.

This will be held in conjunction with an open day as part of the Peaks to Points Week.
