Monogram Residential Trust, Inc.(“Monogram”) announced today that ithas completed the acquisition of land

five miles east of the Pacific Ocean in HuntingtonBeach, CA, for the development of a new multi-family community.“We look forward to designing and building this

high-quality apartment community in an areawhere it has traditionally been very difficult tobuild apartments”Equity capital for the construction of the devel-

opment, currently known as Edinger at Hunting-ton Beach, will be provided by Monogram and byMonogram Residential Master Partnership I LP,which is a joint venture between Monogram andPGGM Private Real Estate Fund, a real estate in-vestment vehicle for Dutch pension funds. KNRHuntington Beach will serve as the developer anda joint venture partner in the development.The development project is located at the major

intersection of Edinger Avenue and GothardStreet at 7280 Edinger Avenue. When the projectis completed in late 2017, it will offer 510 luxuryapartment homes. Approximately half of the units

will be one-bedroom, one-bath apartments. Otherfloor plans will offer two or three bedrooms andtwo baths. Unit sizes will range from 601 to 1,542square feet.“We are excited to be working with KNR Hunt-

News Flash From CaliforniaThe Coast Guard intercepted a boatload of

people off the coast of California today.This placed the Coast Guard in an awk-

boat was not heading to, but away from theUSA, towards El Salvador. Another surprisefinding was the boat was loaded with Ameri-

can citizens, who were all sen-iors of pensionable age.

Thehighlights include a call to familiesto “turn off the TV when they sitdown to eat because, even thoughtelevision isuseful for keep-ing up with thenews, having iton during meal-time doesn't letyou communi-cate with eachother”, accord-ing to a CatholicNews Servicetranslation ofthe interview.And Francis

said people will also be much hap-pier when they stop trying too hardto bring others round to their way ofthinking – including on religion. Hesaid the church grows “by attraction,not proselytising”, and added thatthe best way to get through to any-one was with “dialogue, startingwith his or her own identity”.The number one piece of advice

5. Sundays should be holidays.Workers should have Sundays offbecause “Sunday is for family,” hesaid.

6.. Find innovative ways to cre-ate dignified jobs for young people.“We need to be creative with youngpeople. If they have no opportunitiesthey will get into drugs” and bemore vulnerable to suicide, he said.

7. Respect and take care of na-ture. Environmental degradation “isone of the biggest challenges wehave,” he said. “I think a questionthat we're not asking ourselves is:'Isn't humanity committing suicidewith this indiscriminate and tyranni-cal use of nature?'”

8. Stop being negative. “Needingto talk badly about others indicateslow self-esteem. That means, 'I feelso low that instead of picking myselfup I have to cut others down,'” thePope said. “Letting go of negativethings quickly is healthy.”

9. Don't proselytise; respect oth-ers' beliefs. “We can inspire othersthrough witness so that one growstogether in communicating. But theworst thing of all is religious prose-lytism, which paralyses: 'I am talk-ing with you in order to persuadeyou,' No. Each person dialogues,starting with his and her own iden-tity. The church grows by attraction,not proselytising,” the Pope said.

the HungryOn July 16th, anyone who donated 5

cans of food to the food bank at theOC Fair received a free admission

and ride. Second Harvest Food Bank hopedthey would get more than 63,000 pounds offood this year, compared to 60,000 collectedlast year.The food bank, which helps serve more

than 200,000 individuals each month be-tween Los Alamitos and San Clemente, is thelink between food suppliers and over 340distribution agencies. All the food collectedgoes to the bank's warehouse at 8014 MarineWay in Irvine, where volunteers check thedonations, which then become part of a su-permarket for the agencies, who make selec-tions for their clients' needs. "We've collected enough food for more

than 275 million meals and distributed it topartners, including church pantries, seniorcenters, rehab centers, homes for abusedchildren, shelters and emergency assistance

organizations over the last 30 years," saidGavin Couvrey-Jacobs, food drive coordina-tor. "About 42% of our labor is supplied byvolunteers." Helping collect food at the Fairwere 20 enthusiastic employees fromPhiladelphia Insurance in Mission Viejo."I donate canned food whenever I can,"

said Katrina Woolsey of Santa Ana, as shedropped off several bags full of canned food."There are so many people who go hungry

in OC that I'm trying to make a difference."The mother of four thanked the food bankhelpers for all they do.Gavin said more than 400,000 people in

OC are at risk of hunger every month--morethan half children and seniors. "We partnerwith local grocers, restaurants, caterers andhotels to collect prepared and perishablefood, then distribute it the same day to agen-cies that feed people directly," he said.Deborah Henderson, food bank marketing

assistant, said there are more than 36 sitesaround the county "where we providehealthy after-school meals and summermeals, plus nutrition education to 1,800 chil-dren daily."Twice a month, they distribute groceries to

more than 3,500 low and fixed- income sen-ior households at 37 sites. "We pack FeedingHope Boxes full of nutritious, shelf-stablefood for nearly 3,000 disadvantaged familiesevery month," she said.

Henderson said people can help by hostinga food drive at a school, office or neighbor-hood, volunteer (sort and label food, serve asan ambassador in the community, donatefunds--each dollar can provide enough foodfor 3 meals) plus more. Why DUI Checkpoints:The Huntington Beach Police Department conducted a Sobriety/Dri-

vers License Checkpoint on Saturday, August 16 at Beach Blvd. andSlater Avenue from 7:30 p.m. to 2:20

a.m.. Checkpoints are placed in locationsthat have the greatest opportunity forachieving drunk and drugged driv-ing deterrence and provide thegreatest safety for officers andthe public. Over the past 12months, there have been 35alcohol related collisionson Beach Blvd. These re-sulted in 14 injuries to thevehicles’ occupants andone fatality. There havealso been 241 citationsissued to drivers onBeach Boulevard forbeing unlicensed and 66citations for driving on asuspended/revoked license.

Sobriety/Drivers Licensecheckpoints help lower DUI re-lated deaths and injuries. A majorcomponent of these checkpoints inthe deterrent effect it has on those whomight drive drunk and/or drug impaired,unlicensed, or with a suspended/revoked license.

Checkpoints help to bring more awareness to motorists and encourageeveryone to use sober designated drivers. According to the National High-way Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided

the most effective documented results of any DUI enforcement strate-gies.

Here are some of our statistics from Saturday’scheckpoint: 3520 Vehicles through the checkpoint 1129 Vehicles screened and given pamphlet with

information on DUI 6 Standardized Field Sobriety Tests administered 4 DUI-Alcohol impaired drivers arrested 1 Public Intoxication Arrest 14 Drivers cited for operating a vehicle while

unlicensed 1 Vehicle impounded 12 Citations issued for various code violations

The Huntington Beach Police Department will conductanother Sobriety/Drivers License checkpoint on Septem-ber 20 in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and

injuries upon our streets and highways.Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Huntington

Beach Police Department by a grant from the California Officeof Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-

Attention Fountain ValleyWater Users, Residents,and Business Owners. In

response to the state’s ongoingdrought, the State Water Boardhas issued regulations calling formandatory water restrictions. TheCity of Fountain Valley has beenstrongly committed to promotingits water conservation pro-grams and has imple-mented mandatoryconservation meas-ures along the way.As a result, all of thestate’s proposed re-strictions are alreadymandatory in Foun-tain Valley. FountainValley is ramping upits enforcement effortsthrough education andwill reserve fines of up to$500 per incident for ex-treme cases and repeat of-fenders. The following is a summary of

the State’s mandatory restrictions

which are also permanent restric-tions under the Fountain ValleyMunicipal Code:1) Irrigation runoff onto

non-irrigated areas such assidewalks is prohibited2) Washing of vehicles

without a shutoff noz-zle is prohibited3) Washing down

driveways and

sidewalks is prohibited4) Water fountains or decorative

water features are prohibited unlessa recirculating system is used5) Mandatory restrictions on out-

door irrigation (The City prohibitswatering between 7:00 a.m. and7:00 p.m. and watering duration tono more than 15 minutes per sta-tion per day.)

Mo’ne Davis, the13-year old pitcher for the Taney Dragons LittleLeague team in Philadelphia, qualifies as sports’latest superstar. In the past two weeks, Davis has appeared on live

TV pitching in the LL World Series inWilliamsport, PA, graced the cover of Sports Illus-trated, made the roundsof the morning talkshows and the eveningnews, and watched herautograph value soarinto the hundreds-of-dollars per item.Whether all that expo-sure is healthy for a 13-year-old is debatable.What isn’t debatable

is how capitalizing onthe youthful exuberanceand innocence of kidshas made the folks atLittle League, Inc. ex-tremely wealthy. Evenbefore Davis burst ontothe scene, the non-profit organization was doing itsbest NCAA impersonation. For 2012, Little LeagueInc. reported revenue of almost $25 million and assetsof more than $85 million according to a report in

USA Today. And those who run the non-profit or-ganization were among the biggest beneficiaries ofall that black ink. CEO Steve Keener earned a salary of $430,000 in

2012, nearly double what he took home five yearsearlier. The 100-person full-time staff collectivelymade almost $7.5 million in salary, with half-a-dozensenior staffers earning between $100,000 and$250,000 each. Great work if you can get it, and notthat difficult to do when ESPN is shelling out $76

million over eightyears to televisethe two-week an-nual tournament.Keener tried to

defend the wealthamassed by his or-ganization whenresponding to aninquiry from USAToday Sport aboutwhere the moneywent. He said themajority of the or-ganization's costsare related to themaintenance ofthe group’s na-

tional headquarters in Williamsport, five regionalcenters — in Connecticut, Georgia, Texas, Californiaand Indiana — a full-time facility in Poland and of-fices in Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Little League, Inc.’s financial health might not raiseany eyebrows until you consider that most of its goodfortune is attributable to its volunteers, 1,250,000 ofthem in 7,500 communities according to Keener.Sound familiar? But at least the NCAA offers a freeeducation, half-hearted though it may be in some in-stances, to its version of free labor. Mo’ne isn’t quite the financial juggernaut that Little

League, Inc. is, but she could challenge Keener’s in-come level if she was so inclined. Brandon Steiner,owner of the nation’s premier sports memorabiliacompany Steiner Sports, estimated that Mo’ne couldeasily make $100,000 on an autograph deal. Productendorsements could up that figure substantially.Davis has her sights set on a basketball scholarship

to UConn and unfortunately, any merchandise orproduct endorsement deal could jeopardize her col-legiate eligibility. Neither Keener nor Little League,Inc. has similar concerns. They can continue amass-ing obscene amounts of money on the backs of theMo’ne Davises with impunity.

The Antarctic continent, roughly thesize of the United States and Mexicocombined, is composed of rock coveredby glaciers some 16,000 feet thick. Theglaciers form from fallen snow com-pacting into successive layers of ice,and they eventually move downhill to-ward the coasts and “calve” into theocean as icebergs and eventually meltout into the sea. Antarctica and Green-land combined hold about 99 percent ofthe globe’s freshwater ice.According to the National Snow &

Ice Data Center, the result of the entireAntarctic continent melting out com-pletely would be sea level rise of about200 feet around the world, which couldin turn lead to untold devastation. Whileno one can be sure how hot things willget as a result of global warming, mostclimate models don’t forecast condi-tions hot enough to cause the wholesalemelt-out of Antarctica.In fact, the British Antarctic Survey

(BAS) reports that the East AntarcticIce Sheet, which constitutes about two-thirds of the world’s southernmost andiciest continent, is remaining relativelystable, with some slight melting that isbalanced out by new winter snows. Because East Antarcticarests on rock that is higher than sea level, it is unlikely to col-lapse. In fact, East Antarctica’s ice cover may thicken movingforward due to predicted increases in snowfall amounts overthe coming decades.But on the west side of Antarctica, ice across an area

roughly the size of Texas called the Amundsen Sea Embay-ment (ASE) is already thinning rapidly in large part as a resultof surrounding waters warming up due to changing oceancirculation patterns. Many scientists believe that these oceanchanges are happening as a result of human-induced globalwarming as well as thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer.“This is an area that has always caused glaciologists con-

cern, because here the bedrock beneath the ice is a long waybelow sea-level and the ice is only kept in place because it isthick enough to rest on the bed,” reports BAS. “Thinning ofthe ice around the coast could lead to glacier acceleration andfurther thinning of the ice sheet. Essentially, the ice sheet maybe unstable, and the recent pattern of thinning could be a pre-

cursor to wholesale loss of the ASE ice sheet.”Meanwhile, researchers from NASA and UC Irvine

studying the ASE ice sheet report a “continuous and rapidretreat” of glaciers there and think that there is “no [major]obstacle that would prevent the glaciers from further re-treat.” They worry that within a millennium and perhapsas soon as two centuries, the ASE could melt out entirely—

leading to between four and 10 feet of sea level risearound the world—if moderate warming models proveto be correct.Of course, we can all play a role in preventing such

scenarios by reducing our carbon footprints. Take fewerairplane trips. Buy organic food. Walk, bike or take pub-lic transit to work. If you must drive, get a hybrid or elec-tric car. Wear a sweater instead of turning up the heat.And urge legislators to push new laws that limit green-house gas emissions by industry, utilities and other bigpolluters. It may be now or never.

nays have soared in popularity among imbibingAmericans. The preference of just one in four in1992, its now the alcoholic beverage of choice for 35percent of us, according to a 2013 Gallup poll. At thesame time, beer has taken a tumble, from the favorite of

nearly half ofus to just 36percent.“Wine is

an adventurein a glass –some th ingother cultureshave recog-nized for cen-turies,” saysHoward Kle-infeld, author

(as Howard K.) of “Dial M for Merlot,” www.DialM-forMerlot.com, a fun novel about a lovelorn nerd whoseworld snaps to life with his first wine tasting.“For a long time in this country, we viewed wine as an

elitist beverage. Just to be eligible to uncork a bottle re-quired a scary level of sophistication. I have great respectfor connoisseurs and the sommeliers, but if you’ve everattended a wine tasting, you quickly see wine is actuallythe great equalizer.”For those who’ve never visited a vineyard or sipped a

Gewurztraminer, Kleinfeld offers these tips to free upyour palate -- and your psyche -- for a full-bodied expe-rience.

1. What’s the best wine?You’ll find all kinds of lists purporting to distill the top

10 or top 100 best wines of the thousands upon thousandsof new releases each year. They are a wonderful resourcefor information and a great starting point, but there is no

substitute for personal exploration. “The best wine is always whatever’s in your glass at

the moment,” Kleinfeld says, “unless whatever’s in yourglass makes you grimace, in which case …”

2. Don’t drink it if it doesn’t make you happy.Life really is too short to not make the most of every

moment – and every sensual experience. “I learned that in 2007 when I was diagnosed with

throat cancer at, what I felt was, a very young age,” Kle-infeld says. “I got through surgery, chemotherapy and ra-diation with the love and support of my family andfriends, but I lost my sense of taste for a few years.”Cancer-free and with all of his senses intact, Kleinfeld

says he has resolved to enjoy every sip of life.“Don’t waste your time on wine you don’t enjoy. Save

it for cooking,” he says. “Drink something that puts asmile on your face. And remember – there are all kindsof smiles.”

3. Go ahead and shell out $50 or $100 on a wine youjust have to taste again.A lot of us think California and Napa Valley when we

think domestic wines, and while The Golden State is theNo. 1 producer in the country (followed by Washington,Oregon and New York), every state now has wineries.That means that wherever you are, there’s a wine tastingroom within driving distance. “If you go to a wine tasting and you sample something

you absolutely love, something you know you want totaste again – maybe with a steak, which they don’t usu-ally have at wine-tasting rooms, go ahead and buy it,”Kleinfeld advises. “Forget that it costs three or four times what you

(might) usually spend fora bottle of wine. Splurge.See tip No. 2.”

4. Forget the red withmeat, white with fish andchicken rule – unless itworks for you.The idea of pairing

red wines with red meatshas to do with the bolder flavor of both. Fish and chickentend to have milder flavors, as do many white wines.“But there are so many exceptions to those ‘rules’ you

may as well just toss ‘em,” Kleinfeld says. “They don’ttake into account the range of flavors of meat, fish andchicken, especially when you consider all the differentways they can be prepared. And if you’re not a fan ofRiesling, for instance, you won’t like it no matter whatyou pair it with.” Be an adventurer, he advises. Open a few different va-

rieties of wine when you sit down to eat and explore dif-ferent pairings.“The entrees and wines you best enjoy together are the

perfect pairings for you.”

The next time someone at your office lets out a "silent but deadly" emission,maybe you should thank them. A new study at the University of Exeter sug-gests that exposure to hydrogen sulfide - a.k.a. what your body produces as

bacteria breaks down food, causing gas - could prevent mitochondria damage. Yep,the implication is what you're thinking: People are taking the research to mean that

smelling farts could prevent disease and even cancer. The study, published in the Medicinal Chemistry Communications journal,found that hydrogen sulfide gas in rotten eggs and flatulence could be a key

factor in treating diseases. "Although hydrogen sulfide gas is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally producedin the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant

implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases," Dr. MarkWood, a professor at the University of Exeter, said in a statement. While hydrogen sulfide gas is harmful in large doses, the study suggests

that "a whiff here and there has the power to reduce risks of cancer, strokes,heart attacks, arthritis, and dementia by preserving mitochondria," Time reports.

Dr. Matt Whiteman, a University of Exeter professor who worked on the study, saidin a statement that researchers are even replicating the natural gas in a new compound,AP39, to reap its health benefits.Perhaps beans and Brussel Sprout futures might make a good investment?

Driverless Cars -Less Organ Donors?

AOL Staff says there mightbe..."Unintended consequencesabound when it comes to

emerging technology, and self-dri-ving cars are no exception. Numer-ous ethical and legal dilemmasassociated with autonomous vehi-cles are currently being exploredand have been well documented,but it seems there is one drawbackthat has been missing from theconversation: where are we goingto get our extra organs?It sounds like a dark question,

but consider this: car accidents kill3,287 people every day in the U.S.,and self-driving cars should drasticallyreduce that number. Google's au-

tonomous car, for example, has traveledmore than 700,000 miles on Californiaroadways with only one accident, and

that one involved a human being behindthe wheel at the time. Fatal auto acci-

dents supply the majority of donor or-gans, but 18 people a day still die wait-ing for a transplant, according to the

Department of Health andHuman Services. So whatwill happen when there areeven less body parts to goaround?The high-tech problem

could have a high-tech solu-tion. Bre Pettis, founder ofthe 3-D printing companyMakerbot, told Fortune that3-D printable organs willhave to follow in the self-driving car revolution's

wake."We have this huge problem that we

sort of don't talk about, that people dieall the time from car accidents. It's kindof insane," Pettis told Fortune. "But themost interesting thing is, if we can re-duce accidents and deaths, then we ac-tually have a whole other problem onour hands of, 'Where do we get organs?'I don't think we'll actually be printingorgans until we solve the self-drivingcar issue. The next problem will beorgan replacement."Pettis says the hardware is capable of

rolling out human hearts, livers or anyother organ needed. But, creating thechemical substances capable of comingtogether to create such organs is still amajor mountain scientists continue towork on conquering."

Seawater IntrusionLiving on the coast in Southern California, we are well

aware of the many benefits of saline sea water. Wecan swim in it to keep fit and it acts as a natural

cleanser of minor cuts.However, seawater is never good when it mixeswith our drinking water.

Seawater intrusion occurs when ocean waterseeps into the earthand finds its ways intothe deep, freshgroundwater supply inour aquifers. If weallow it to contami-

nate our drinking water supplies, the consequenceswould be disastrous.Why does this happen? Freshwater aquifers found

near the coast normally have some seawater, which isdenser than freshwater. Saltwater exerts a higher pres-sure and “pushes” freshwater. Try to picture twocolumns of water, one fresh and one salty. The pressureat the bottom of the saltwater column will be greaterdue to its high mineral content, which makes it denser.We have found over the many years that if we fill thefreshwater column higher than the seawater column,we can balance them and hold back the seawater.If sea levels rise, such as during storm activity or due

to our changing climate, this can pose a breaching prob-lem. But the biggest culprit that causes seawater intru-sion is pumping groundwater faster than it isreplenished and the fluid pressure changes. There’s usually no problem when it rains and the

aquifers are naturally refilled with freshwater. Guess what happens during adrought? We pump a lot of groundwater and don’t replace or recharge it at thesame rate. This delicate balance can be disrupted and saltwater can easily find itsway in.We have been dealing with this problem in California since the 1920s when

fresh well water was used for growing communities. During the 1950s the LosAngeles County Flood Control District (LACFCD) first introduced freshwater

injection wells to counteract the saltwatercontamination problem.During the mid 1960s, the Orange County

Water District (OCWD; the District) began a pilotproject in Long Beach and Seal Beach with theLACFCD to stop seawater intrusion from the Pacific Ocean to wells as far asfive miles inland. They injected expensive imported water to form a hydraulic

barrier. Farther south inFountain Valley,OCWD injected treatedwastewater to create thebarrier. After carefullyanalyzing it, the Cali-fornia State Board ofPublic Health approveda full-scale project toallow the use of treatedwastewater for this pur-pose. OCWD’s WaterFactory 21 (WF 21)and a series of 23 injec-tion wells became oper-ational in 1976.Fast forward to the

1990s. As groundwateruse more than tripled,the size of the seawaterbarrier needed to ex-pand. This was the gen-esis of the GroundwaterReplenishment System

(GWRS), to obtain new high-quality water to expand the seawater intrusion bar-rier and to replenish the groundwater basin. The GWRS, which went on-line inJanuary 2008, more than doubled the capacity of the old barrier.

Utilizing a basic economic principle of Supply and Demand, Condoand Townhome associations can increase property values simplyby obtaining FHA approval.

The FHA, or Federal Housing Administration, offers specific mortgagefinancing products known for requiring the lowest down payment options.This makes FHA financing especially popular for many types of househunters, most especially first time buyers.The challenge in California is that property values are high compared

to most of the rest of the country. The most difficult part of a purchasefor most buyers is coming up with thedown payment. Once again, this tendsto be especially true with first timehome buyers.Additionally, first time home buy-

ers tend to look at the lower end ofthe price spectrum. In California es-pecially, this can limit them to look-ing primarily at condos andtownhomes. The problem is thatvery few condo associations are ap-proved for FHA financing.In order to obtain an FHA loan on

a condominium or townhome, theentire Home Owners’ Association(HOA) needs to have gone througha process to apply with and get ap-proved by the FHA. Although theprocess is not very expensive,very few HOAs have obtainedFHA approval. In Orange County,fewer than one third of condocomplexes are FHA approved.For someone looking to pur-

chase a condo using FHA financ-ing, two thirds of the availableproperties on the market are al-ready eliminated as potential op-portunities simply due to thisfinancing restriction. This is not just bad news for the buyer, it’s alsobad news for the existing homeowners within condo complexes.

Here’s where the law of supply and demandcomes in. There is decreased demand for prop-erties that are not FHA approved and increaseddemand for those that are. Increased demandpushes prices up and decreased demand pushes them down. This is a basictenet of economics.Securing FHA approval brings in a much larger pool of potential buyers.

Yes, first time homebuyers and others with less down payment are largelybenefitted by FHA financing. But the FHA is also more forgiving on credit

transgressions than are other financing programs. Individuals withprior short sales, foreclosures or bankruptcies are especially commonnow after the housing downturn of a few years ago. These individualswill find they can obtain mortgage financing from the FHA yearsearlier than they could through other financing means. Any property owner would be appreciative of a program that could

increase their property’s value. In the case of a Condo or TownhomeAssociation, securing FHA Approval increases the values of everyhomeowner within the association. Increased demand for one unitraises its value and sales price. Increased sales prices of one unit inthe development increases the values of all the others. As more andmore units sell, the effect continues to compound and property val-ues continue to rise.For a condo or townhome association, obtaining FHA approval

should be a no-brainer. Homeowners should contact their boardand property management company to request the associationapply for FHA approval.

"The first day of school can be a nervewrecking experience for your son, daughter,or grandchild. Deciding how to help preparethem for a whole new slew of classes, teach-ers, and students is no easy task. In additionto getting the back best to school deals, helpavoid first day of school jitters with these 15tips:

1. Visit theschool in ad-vance withyour child orgrandchild tomake sureboth you andthem knowwhat to expecton the firstday.

2. Keep anorganized list of back to school supplies soeveryone is prepared for the first day. Buywhat you can in advance, and shop aroundfor the best deals.

3. Keep your child's mind active and readyfor the new year by assigning them occa-sional summer reading and practice lessons.

4. Meet the teacher in advance-- it's goodfor both you and your child to know who

will be in charge of the class before the newyear actually begins.

5. Make sure your little one is in bed at adecent time the night before. Start them inan early to bed, early to rise routine the weekleading up to the first day.

6. Make sureyou have theschool sched-ule and calen-dar of events.It would beembarrassingto be the onlyone to missparent-teachernight!

7. Plan outyour kid's

breakfast for the first day of school. Makesure it's healthy and filling so they don't runout of steam before lunch.

8. Go one step further and pre-pack theirlunch for the first day (unless they're buyingat the cafeteria, of course).

9. Avoid early morning stress beforeschool. Lay out your child's outfit the nightbeforehand. The same goes for making sure

the backpack is organized in advance too!

10. If you're driving your kid to schoolmake sure you know the best route. Youwouldn't want to be one parent showing uplate on the first day!

11. Check out all of the clubs and activi-ties the school has to offer! Start talking withyour child early on about their interests forthe year and plan on them attending.

12. Fill out any and all paperwork neces-sary for the school year. This could includeanything from immunization papers, to othermedical forms, to emergency contact forms.

13. Prepare for the homework routine. Be-fore the first day, choose a nice study areawith your child so that they'll know wherehomework will be happening on a dailybasis. Make sure it's well lit and clean toavoid distractions.

14. Make a list of goals with your child tolay out what they want to accomplish overthe next year. This will help them be focusedand organized.

15. Last but not least, help your child bepositive! Let them know there's nothing tobe worried about on their first day.
