Get Your Bite On! ByAndrewScott... Trying to write about fishing the doldrums of August is as hard as actually fishing them. Dead calm seas and warm water don’t make for the best conditions. There’s plenty of Bonita and Barracuda around. Anywhere from 50 to 150 feet. Some scat-tered Dolphin in the 250 ft range. Even the Sailfish that were once plentiful seem to have left for colder

water. Now with said, I did hear of a boat that nailed Dolphin including 4 gaffers, a King and a Sail in 60ft. What do I know?I did have the chance to talk with my old friend Capt. Rufus Wakeman of Hot Tuna Charters, River Palm Fish Camp and multi world record holder on the current river fishing. “The dock fishing for snook has been hot”. “Some 10lb fish have been landed and some bigger fish we never had a chance with hit on artificials”. DOA TerrorEyz, have been the primary choice though bucktails such as the Red-tail hawk is always a good choice. Tarpon have been located at the Crossroads and the Roosevelt Bridge. Anywhere north of the Jensen Beach Causeway you’ll find Sea Trout. I wrote about this last month and it still stands. Live shrimp in 4 to 5 ft of water. Get in the grass. Commercially, the netters have be making good catches of Sheepshead, Goats, Moons (Lookdowns) and Pompano. The bright spot in August for me and my ilk was the migration of Blue Crabs. It takes a certain breed that will go to all the trouble for these ill-tempered but delicious crustaceans. Fishing for them is cheap and easy, it’s the preparation and consuming that is the challenge. A simple pyramid trap and some chicken necks or fish heads is all you need. Well, that and a bucket with some tongs are necessary, especially the tongs. Large catches were made on the catwalks of the Roosevelt Bridge. Lobster season is off to a fast start. Good catches at both the Stuart and Ft. Pierce inlets have been made. Really, anywhere you find rocks, you’ll find bugs. Reports out of Peck’s Lake haven’t been so good. Catches are small and the current wisdom is that the Goliath Groupers, a protected species have been feeding heavily on them. This month is the 5th Annual Michael Shields Inshore Open hosted by the River Palm Cottages, Fish Camp and Island Party Rentals. Proceeds benefit the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Martin County. The event is set for September 23 & 24. The Captain’s Reception is Friday, Sept.23, 2011 at 7:00pm. The tournament begins immediately after. Teams of 4 or less will target Snook, Tarpon, Redfish & Trout. Anglers and their families are invited to the award ceremony and BBQ on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 3:00pm. For more information, angler registration and non angler tickets go to www.fishforth-ekids.org. September begins a transitional period for our area. Temperatures and winds will begin to change that will help improve the fishing. Bluefish will get thicker in the surf and Flounder should be moving more in the river. Off-shore will be the big question. With Hurricane Irene bearing down on us as of this writing, things could change considerably. Let’s hope it stays out to sea.Andrew Scott is a local Musician, angler and chef living in Stuart, Florida. All inquires and reports should be sent to [email protected] or

So You Want to Take a Cruise… We just returned from the Caribbean. We recently returned from a six night cruise on the Carnival Freedom. We embarked out of Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, heading for Key West. We walked Duval St. and ended up at Louies for some tropical liquid refreshment and local food stuffs at the very bottom of the USA, on the water. We then returned to the ship for a relaxing day at sea, headed for Grand Cayman, a safe, beautiful island with water, water everywhere. Four of us rented a car for $80 for the day and headed out to Rum Point on the tip of the island. The beach was lined with beach chairs, hammocks and food concessions, a wonderful day of swimming and swinging shaded hammocks. We drove the island and returned to the ship.

Our next stop was Jamaica. We shopped the morning for souvenirs and returned to the quiet ship as most of the passengers were on the island. We enjoyed the island from our balcony and the ship. We have been to Jamaica multiple times and visited all the attractions. It was a good day by the pool and spa with a constant run to the buffet to maintain energy. The sunsets have been spectacular, the food and service excellent and the seas very calm making for a very enjoyable adventure. This was also the first time we traveled with a full moon, very nice to be at sea with the moon reflecting on the waters. The last day was spent at sea, returning to Fort Lauderdale on a Saturday. It was a pleasure knowing that we had Sunday to recover from our relaxing vacation before returning to work. We are going again in July and October, but this time as a VIP with 10 Carnival cruises, allowing us several additional perks. I like having something to look forward to and the cruise meets that criteria. Anticipation is a large part of any cruise.

Come on and book your cruise. Treat yourself and get excited, knowing there is something out there in the future to look forward to. Returning home always brings mixed feelings, we want to play on, knowing we must return to work to be able to pay for the next one. Expedia Cruise Ship Centers offer the best technology, pricing and service available. Check us out, we can get you there.

Going GreenerThe Three “R’s”

for Kids Going Back to School are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Waste Management offers teachers, parents and students tips on recy-cling and reducing waste volume

Pompano Beach, August 17, 2011 – This is the time of year students throughout South Florida begin returning to their schools, which are one of the most potentially productive, yet often-overlooked, sources of recycling and conservation in any community. These late weeks of

summer are an ideal time for teachers, parents and students to start planning “green school” programs built around the concepts of reduc-

ing, reusing and recycling waste.Every year, schools produce millions of tons of waste that can either be recycled or reused, from paper to discarded cafeteria food. How-

ever, The George Lucas Educational Foundation’s Edutopia Web site’s poll reveals that 74 percent of the 118 schools that participated in its

online poll have either limited recycling programs or none at all.

“We encourage all public and private schools to have recycling pro-grams for office paper, classroom paper, aluminum cans and plastic water and sport drink bottles,” said Dawn McCormick, Community

Affairs Manager for Waste Management. “Office and classroom paper recycling can be as easy as equipping every classroom with a recep-tacle for used paper that’s collected separately from other garbage.

Recycling aluminum cans and plastic water and sports drink bottles in the cafeteria requires only a small effort and is already done in thou-

sands of schools across the country. Once the kids get into the spirit it takes on a life of its own.”

Teachers can also prepare environmentally themed classroom projects utilizing the many resources on the Web covering everything from re-cycling to reducing consumption to buying products made of recycled materials. DoSomeThing.org provides a step-by-step plan for starting a school-wide recycling program that describes all of the internal and external issues a recycling committee would have to consider to start recycling. Its related site, earth911.org, gets into fun, innovative con-

servation programs, like how to travel to a prom green style.

Waste Management offers www.ThinkGreen.com/classroom, a K-12 resource in partnership with Discovery Education. Complete with standards-based lesson plans, compelling videos, interactive activities and Think Green® Resources to engage students and extend the learn-ing to the home, www.ThinkGreen.com/classroom is a powerful suite of tools for educators seeking new materials to enliven environmental lessons. Teachers of children grades K-5 will find resources that will help them answer almost any question about the Three Rs of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Parents can help schools achieve their recycling goals by reducing the amount of consumables that children bring to school in their lunch boxes and by buying environmentally friendly school supplies. For

example, kids who bring their own lunch can cut waste by: • Packing lunches in washable, reusable bags instead of disposable

bags and bringing water in refillable bottles. If parents are wor-ried about losing refillable bottles, buy one with a cap that can be clipped to a lunch bag;

“There’s a lot of home-based common sense that can make a big difference in schools’ environmental footprints,” said McCormick.

“Between home and school, we have an opportunity to create a gen-eration that sees conservation and recycling as a routine part of every

day, which is just what it should be.”

Going Greener Back-to-School Clothes and Shoes Kids grow up fast, and that brand new Transformers shirt he just had to have will probably be getting snug by winter vacation. Wouldn’t a vintage tee be a lot cooler for him (and your checkbook)? Since kids often only wear a given garment for a few months before outgrowing it, there are plenty of good-as-new kids’ clothes out there for a fraction of the cost. Thrift stores and yard sales are great spots to start. But the best place for kids’ clothing finds is swaps you set up with your family and friends. When the kids hit an-other growth spurt, there will be more than enough to go around

Books So, the kids are discovering Shakespeare this semester. Why pick up a $30 hardcover of Romeo and Juliet when a gently-used man-uscript will read exactly the same? Many schools have troves of used books in libraries and available for purchase for pennies on the dollar. If you can’t find the titles you want there, libraries, book mobiles and thrift stores have huge bins of gently-used books for 25 cents or less.

Calculators The scientific calculator is often on top of the need-to-buy list for kids entering middle school. But unless your little darling aspires to be a mathematician, she probably won’t touch it after high school comes to a close. So, why drop up to $100 on a new one when there are scores of barely-used finds on the market for a quarter of the price? Some electronics stores sell used scientific calculators, and you can often find them at yard sales and thrift stores, too. You can also purchase used calculators on sites like eBay, but make sure you can return it to the sender if it doesn’t work properly. If you’re buy-ing from a yard sale or store, make sure the calculator is in working condition before you buy it. As many a student has discovered, those buttons are never the same after an apple juice explosion.

Backpacks and Lunch Boxes Sure, it’s cool to have a backpack that can charge your iPod.But if that isn’t in the economic cardsthis year, buying used is a great optionfor a little “green” flair that won’t costa fortune. Backpacks and lunch boxes from yard sales and thrift stores are often good as new. And once you clean them properly, they’re safe and ready for their new owner. Cloth backpacks and lunch bags will be ready for use after a trip through the washing machine. Soak metal or plastic lunch boxes in a mixture of warm water, vinegar and baking soda. Then clean with a nontoxic cleanser to truly banish the “ick” factor.

Items to Buy UsedSports and Athletic Equipment When your child gives a new sport a go, it means many thingsfor the family – grueling practices, exciting games and lots of new equip-ment to factor into your back-to-schoolbudget. Ditch the hefty price tag of brand new equipment, and check out your local sporting goods store for some barely-used finds. While you may be tempted to think that newer is better when it comes to helmets and other protective gear, gently used items that are purchased from a reputable dealer will play just the same. Base-ball bats, hockey sticks and racquets are also perfect reuse gems, and some even play better with a little wear and tear. Clean items with a nontoxic cleanser, and they’re ready for action.

Musical Instruments Buying a brand new instrument for a beginner is always risky business. And considering a classic instrument plays just as well, there’s really no reason not to buy used. Most music stores sell gently-used instruments, and you’ll often discover cool vintage finds for a fraction of the cost of a new instrument. Many instruments will be ready for play after a quick once-over with an eco-friendly instrument cleaner like Brillian-ize Musical Instrument Cleaner and Polish. But if your kid will be putting it up to his lips, you may want to do a deeper clean. Give your brass or woodwinds a soak in warm water, white vinegar and baking soda. This alone will sanitize your in-strument, but you can also use a metal-safe eco-friendly cleaner to be extra cautious. The ingredients in your soak also work wonders on tarnish. Mix the water, vinegar and baking soda into a paste and rub it onto tarnished areas. Rinse, buff and play!

In 2007 Mike finished an eight year stint with the popular variety band Tom Can’t Stop where he shared the stage with Grand Funk Railroad, Eric Burden, The Average White Band, and Three Dog Night just to name a few

This popular health holistic practice has the ability to rejuvenate an over-worked housewife to settle the mind of a big-time exec. Yoga improves the memory in the elderly and can increase stamina. The possibilities are never ending when it comes to this therapeutic level of fitness.

WhatisYoga? There are many different branches of yoga, which involve various breathing techniques, postures, and elements of spirituality. While some types focus more on breathing and positions, other variations zero in on the spiritual side of the process. The term, “yoga,” which means “oneness,” incorporates a variety of historic beliefs and rituals, yet today, the most common forms of this relaxing technique are used to build muscle tone, reduce stress and body tension, as well as clear the mind. Yoga is so popular, it is now offered through workout facilities, private clinics, school gym classes, as well as CDs, videotapes, and DVDs.

Brief HistoryAbout 5,000 years ago, the development of yoga is thought to have origi-nated from an ancient Indian civilization called Harappan, which is situated in the Indus Valley of India [1]. While modern western approaches have embraced the health and wellness aspect of yoga, ancient followers focused more on the attainment of spiritual peace, meditation, becoming one with nature, and achieving a disciplined life.

Over time, yoga has touched many lives, ranging from the wise Gautama Buddha to celebrities, such as Madonna and Sting. Today, the practice of yoga can also be found throughout the entire world, including India, China, and the United States.

DifferentTypesofYogaThe practice of yoga has evolved into a wide-range of styles placing varying emphasis on technique. Even though most of the same physical postures or poses are utilized, the meaning of each one takes on a different form depend-ing on the type of yoga. Below are some of the more popular yoga options, which allow participants to select an approach that better complements their fitness level, goals, and medical status:

* HathaGreat for relaxing after a hard day of work, Hatha yoga uses simple poses to focus on breathing and meditation. This gentle type of yoga is often recom-mended for beginners.

* ViniyogaParticipants suffering from injury or disease often turn to this form of yoga, which is slower and deeply focuses on breathing

techniques. It is a perfect approach for establishing a balance, as well as strengthening and healing the body.* IyengarAssociated with Hatha yoga, this particular approach utilizes a variety of props, such as pillows, blocks, and chairs to increase flexibility. Achieving proper alignment and exercising precision is desired with this type of yoga best described as “mediation in action.” With this style of yoga, each pose is held for longer plots of time than yoga choice [2]. Chronic pain is often treated with this form of yoga.

* AshtangaAlso known as Power Yoga, a variety of advanced poses allow participants to focus on increasing their stamina and strength. Participants often twist, stand, sit, balance, and invert their body during sessions of Ashtanga Yoga. Push-ups and lunges are also included, which takes strength and stamina to another level. Runners and cyclists may enjoy this rigorous form of yoga.

* BikramPerforming this type of yoga within a heated environment of about 95-100 degrees or higher is one of the main features setting this form aside from oth-ers. Bikram yoga is considered a highly intense and physical workout, which involves 26 postures that are performed in a specific order. Although it works wonders on disease and chronic pain, it is suggested that people with previ-ous yoga experience or a high level of fitness attempt this form of yoga.

*KundaliniThis type of yoga pays attention to the healing and purifying processes of the body and mind, utilizing breathing exercises, poses, chanting, and medita-tion. Hand and finger gestures, as well as visualizations are also a part of this yoga form.

* KripaluThis meditation-centered form of yoga begins with meditation and breathing, followed by a warm-up, and then capped off by a series of poses. There are two stages regarding Kripalu yoga. The first deals with poses that are held for a short amount of time, while the second stage requires poses to be held for longer.

*SivanandaThere are five different aspects regarding this form of yoga, including exer-cise, breathing, relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking. There are 12 poses associated with Sivananda yoga, which are accompanied by mantra chanting, and breathing/relaxation techniques.

As with any excerise program, check with your doctor first. Next, select the type of yoga that bests suits you. Be sure to wear suitable clothing and have a good mat. Join a local pilates studio or purchase/rent a yoga training video to learn the techniques.

HappyYoga-ing!

Earthtones defi es description!

While there is certainly a rock and roll atmosphere that pervades throughout the

store, there is also a curious blend of serenity that can‛t be denied.

At fi rst you might feel like you‛ve been thrown back into the sixties, but then you turn a corner and it feels like Polynesia, blink your eyes and suddenly you‛re in a

discotheque. Take a few more steps and you‛re in a secret Garden.

You must experience it!
